For those getting into making rings...don't forget to scuff up the outside of the ring core before gluing it (220 grit sandpaper works well). It'll create a much better glue bond between the blank and the ring core.
Somehow I missed this one, this was exactly what I needed! Thanks for the awesome tutorial on these, you always figure out the most efficient and simple way to do things. Love that adjustable cutter too!
Looking at this for helpfull tips for ring turning. Instantly seeing someone do the one thing ya shouldn't. xD Don't wear gloves while working with a spinning machine part. Even the thin plastic ones can pull ya hand in... when they get caught.
Very impresive. Want to do wood turning rings ,I have done some by hand now I want to do some one a lathe . Had one sold it or gave it away was too big . I want just a small one, What do you recommend? Julien Lamarche.
Note at around 3:30 ish there is a lot of chatter from the cutting tool. When inserting the boring head pay attention to the cutting tool's cutting edge and make sure it's flat and centered on axis. It looks like it's way high on the video which effects the way it cuts and causes noise /chatter. Unlike a wood lathe tool which is forgiving these carbide cutting tools need to be very close to the axis center. Nice well explained video.
As a woodturner I would suggest you turn your parting tool "upside down" - that is the way it should be used - flat side on the rest. You can easily sharpen it by just touching the bottom (not the angled side) with a grinding wheel. Kind regards.
if yiu are careful, you can usually get two thin rings from one blank! i actually frefer to start with a long blank(4 inches or so) then drill, bore, part off then repeat also when using a saw to part off, run the lathe at a slow speed in reverse, much safer!
I really loved this video but 03:20 - 05:00 was a little boring ;) seriously though I now want a boring tool, I've been using different drill bits and scraper to do small insides like this.
you can get them lots of places, (like using scrap pieces of wood, etc. but I have a woodturning store called Turners Warehouse where I sell all kinds of cool blanks. You can check it out at TurnersWarehouse.com Hope that helps! These are super fun to make
Absolutely! You don't need carbide tools. Regular turning tools will work just as well. Personally, I use carbide, but I'm not aware of anything you can make with carbide that you can't make with standard turning tools (HHS), etc. And btw, you can find some pretty inexpensive carbide turning tools on Amazon. I've used them and they work great, and in most cases, just as good Easy Wood Tools. Personally, I don't know a single woodturner who uses Easy Wood Tools unless they've been sent a set for free because they're UA-camrs. Use what you like and what you can afford. You're only limited by your skill (which you can improve) and your imagination. People can make great things with crap tools and crap things with great tools. It all comes down to you.
This is for wood turners. Not someone who wants to make a cheap ring on a whim. If you want that, get a block of wood and a knife and learn to wittle. Otherwise, know the purpose of the video you are commenting on. This guy did a great job and doesn't deserve stupid comments like this.
@@ChadSchimmel amazing! Thanks so much brotha. I’m starting to make rings out of old broken skateboards.. the ones so far don’t have cores and turned out great, checking out this option too tho.. thanks again!!
I want to be a complete asshole. That is the only comment I have. I stabilize my own wood don't use an insert for the ring. And I put one through the washer and dryer because I forgot it in my pocket of my jeans. I don't have all the tools he did which probably cost $500 to $1000. He must have sponsors paying him to show all that expensive tooling he used. It is much easier to turn a ring when you buy a insert that is the correct size before you start. If you can afford all the tools this guy had I guess it is not an art merely machining. Which can be an art depending on what you are making. Sorry being an asshole I will stop there. But the true art is making a wood ring with out the insert and all the expensive tooling.
Beautiful ring! I like to se you now make a $5 wood ring using NO power tools!

InstaBlaster...
very good teacher. Thank you for taking the time to explain the details of "how to" for us UA-cam trained wood turners!
I've watched a lot of videos on ring making and so far I like your technique the best.
That turned out awesome. Thanks for the demo.
What kind of wood?
Very nice.
Thanks! These rings are pretty fun once you get the hang of them
Thanks for starting me on another new hobby and I just got the 15-24 lathe and love it.
What brand/model? Started using the Jet 1221vs as my first lathe and am looking to get a bigger one.

Chad, I really like the boring bar idea, I am constantly making holes too big when turning boxes and other things. 👍🏻
Great video, thank you very much. Great videography and succinct explanation.
Thank you John
I think I need to try a ring. Great video.
Pretty colors!!!
Excellent demo.
the material cost maybe less than $5
but the skills are priceless
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it

Hmmm now you have me thinking about rings....
Thanks.
You're welcome

I use sizers and comfort cores so that I can get the size that I want for the ring itself. Hope that helps!
Great clear video but 3 or 4 people have asked what wood you used I will add to that, what wood was if that you used ?
It was a stabilized maple Thanks
@@ChadSchimmel thanks Chad
Hello just wondering if you could help me out on what tools I need to
Make rings including the metal blanks.

i could not find the ring mandrell or the ring blanks. the mandrells are mentioned in a kit. i could not find the kit. can you help me out.
I good job (sorry for my english) a need de name for cuter you take for drill in side the ring because is verry cool for macro cutting tanks
I didn't know about the tapered shank boring bar. Thanks; however, I can't peg the wood blank. What is the kind of wood?

Hi, thanks for the great video! What's the size of the wooden block?
I want one..
Well done! What collet system are you using?

thanks for the feedback, glad you liked it overall. And yeah the boring head is a game changer :-)
This is awesome.. i dont have any of those tools. Can i pay you to do it for me. I want to propose to my girl on dec. 2nd 2024
Hi Chad,
Great video. We’re did you buy the boring head?
Thanks

using a parting tool upside down and a pull saw on a running lathe (going in the wrong direction) - top tips 🤣
Hi Chad; Two questions 1. What type of wood is the ring? 2. I never heard of ZONA (sp?). I checked Rockler's & others. Where can I buy it?
Good tutorial, but it's less than $5if you already have the tools. Add those ones too and it's not that cheap😉
If you have the basic tools, you can make it from 0$. You can find beautiful wood pieces in your nearest forest or park.
Is there a way to do it without the boring bar?
So I need to have a collet Chuck to use the mandrel you offer?
Where do you get your blanks?

What kind of wood you are using
You keep saying 'wood' or 'stabilized wood' but you never actually say what wood it is. What is it?
Sorry Chad ,,. Boring bar set $110 ,,. Ring Mandrels $30,,. That puts it right out of my price range,,,. keep safe,,. Regards Alf
What is Zona?
What is the brand of that Collet your are using to hold the ring mandrel??
Richard Sell using a Beall chuck from turnerswarehouse.com
what size is your borring head 2" or 3" ?
Great video!
Where did you get the stabilized wood blank? I can't find it on your web site.
Can I order ring blanks from you?
$5 ring? Most ring blank suppliers want at least $15 for a stainless steel blank. Not to mention the cost of the exotic wood, either.
P McRae well at Turners Warehouse the stainless rings are $3 and the blank came from the $1 bin.
What kind of wood?
The ring may have only been $5.00 but you must have purchased a many hundred of $$$ in tools. 😀

Great job though and beautiful outcome. 👍🏼

Thousands of dollars worth of equipment
Where are you getting cores for less than 5$ alone??

Why are you wet sanding wood?
Make a ring for $5... After buying the lathe
Less than $5? Right....with $1000 worth of tools.
Jason Ford yes I’m assuming you have your lathe and tools. I would not add that in to every project that would not make sense.
My thought exactly.
Where did you buy the boring tool
Here’s the exact url. www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/milling-machine-ring-boring-head-9-piece-set?_pos=1&_sid=20976084a&_ss=r
I got a easyer way u only need a smal grinder macine
cool
$5 my big fat butt! Have you seen the prices on steel ring blanks lately
there not that expensive from usa craft supplies
Learn to solder 999 silver sheet. It's fairly easy and doable. You can make a lot of ring blanks (maybe 16 or so) from a $30 sheet of stirling.

A bit more than $5. Just saying.
