For sure! Let someone else try it. I gave mine to someone, and he looks at it and says "something's loose in the trigger." Sure enough, the bolt in my timney trigger came loose!
Well, all my friends know I have a screw loose - that's first on the list. Balance - yeah, not balanced. And when I hear the sound of snowflakes, I tend to go ballistic. So my coefficient probably is off a bit. Maybe I just need to anchor my bed, but the neighbors haven't complained about the noise, yet.
I regret selling my rifle I built. After studying your sniper 101 series I went from 4 moa to 1/2 at 300 but I only got to shoot beyond that twice and rex made it happen with a rem 700 in 243win. Running a custom load based off watching his vids and met chassis plus swfa 10x ffp. But I got tired of not stretching its legs.... Don't give up guys you'll regret it. 2 years of load data thousands of hand loads... Stupid me. Thank you rex!
And it was a 1994 rem used so like he said stick with your fundamentals of marksmanship. I missed a lot but his info literally gives it all. I hope he uploads it to red dot so I can download the series its amazing
Usually it is me ..... I watched a guy at the range not be able to get his new scope to focus at 100 yards...it was set to 15 yards on the front...I helped him out tried not to embarrass him...but for crying out loud read the instructions that came with the scope....then he didn't understand why every single round was not in the same hole because it was a 6.5 Creed....I could not help him with that....
Ha, I have relative who has been hunting longer than I have. And he is stubborn as hell. He has no cheek weld on his rifle, and I try to explain to him how he would shoot better with a simple sleeve that raises his comb up so he can get a good cheek weld. But nope, he’s fine. Then I tried to explain that the parrelax is more than just focusing the scope, wouldn’t listen. Ugggh. Ornary.
This is an excellent video on all the mechanical problems you can run into. And I have encountered them all. A scope got loose on me. Well, I had used loctite before, then changed scopes. Then the dried glue from before led me to believe I was at proper torque and clamping force, when I was not. And the scope moved. So, bought new rings and quit using the loctite. Much better. Then had loose action screws. And found out that no one knows specifically what torque to use but the general and informal consensus is that, for .308 Win, It should be 45 in-lbs. Close enough. That is tight, without breaking screws or stocks. Bring tools with you to the range or hunting. Ain't no harm checking torque and tightening where necessary. I get all those things worked out. Think it is ammo. That one handles a hot barrel better than another. Until that ammo opens up and I go to some cheaper ammo (Armscor) and it is performing as well as the big names. So, then, I realized that on those last shots, I had settled really nicely. So, all the mechanicals being considered, my skills are what needs the most improvement. That being said, I was still less than 1 MOA at 100 yards with a hot barrel and an average shooter (me.) In other words, the rifle is sub MOA, the shooter is approximately 1 to 2 MOA.
Great tips as usual. In the Sniper 101 series I see that spin drift corrections made easy and ranging enemy fire- crack thump method, are now listed as private.
Sarge 605, I have them all. I keep all useful stuff off of YT and elsewhere, and not just shooting related but many subjects, categorized on a dedicated device. My library is quite extensive now.
Never overlook your scope even if it costs a fortune. My NightForce Nx8 was the culprit. I sent it back to NF 2 times to have them send it back as not defective. I had a precision rifle builder that guarantee sub 1/4MOA with their guns and ammo test it. They confirmed it's jacked up. Had their own dealer test it who agreed. Yet NightForce still wont refund my money or replace it.
An embarrassing story that I'll share. I was prepping for Rex's Designated Marksman course earlier this week. My primary rifle was all set but I always bring 1-2 spares with me. I was shooting ARs in 5.56 and my primary was shooting very good groups, as good as I could expect from the mixed ammo can full of 5 different brands of ammo. Then I broke out my first backup rifle, with a new CMMG 22" bull barrel topped with a Leupold 3.5-10x mil dot scope. I was getting 5" groups at 50 yards! Now I had recently swapped scopes between these two rifles. I wanted to use my Vortex 4-16x on my primary rifle. After I got home I inspected the crown for any damage, ran a tight patch through looking for a bulge in the barrel, inspected the rifling for any obvious damage. Nothing. It all looked, well, new, since it was! I decided to swap out the scope from another rifle that I knew was sighted in and shoots well. As I began removing the "problem" Leupold I found the issue. All 8 screws on the scope rings were finger tight. I guess I shouldn't have mounted two scopes at the same time, since I obviously forgot to torque down the Leupold! After torquing them down my backup AR shoots as well as my primary does. Simple lesson, as Rex said, don't overlook the simple solutions and jump right in to the more complicated, or expensive, solutions.
Because of number one, I paint the junction to all mating surface with a dab of model paint. If it's loose, the seal breaks. Not gonna lie, that one has bit me more than once...
Awesome video Mr. Rex, as always. REAL QUICK, PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Y'all need to watch THE HOUR HAS COME REX REVIEWS if it hasn't popped up in your news feed. I know this is about shooting and rifle accuracy and I'm definitely not trying to offend anyone, so please don't take it that way. I actually just came back to this video to go through and see if I missed details from the first time I saw it a couple months back. I just felt compelled to share that.
Hey Rex, great talk! I experienced a bit of an embarrassing issue with a poorly mounted cheap scope. I won't name names but I had a $200 Simmons scope get pinched in poorly aligned rings and the side parallax adjustment was rendered useless. Now I'm saving my pennies for a better system. Being budget minded.... I'm leaning towards the Primary Arms HUD DMR system.
If its one thing I've learned over the last 4 years that I have been struggling with my rig, loose scope base, broken parrallax, twice, loose action screw and a clean barrel had em all, is that the answer to the debate about having a regular barrel cleaning regime is that Keeping a barrel clean will hold a barrels precision as long as you keep it clean. If you dont clean it regularly then you will need fouling shots to get decently tight groups. I surmize not as tight as a barrel that has been held to a strict barrel cleaning regime, dont quote me on that though.
Legit and straight to the point. Even politically correct!! It’s us 90% of the times. Your history on UA-cam Rex is excellent. Do you ever get into the Minnesota/Wisconsin/Ohio area Rex?
Thank you for this Rex! You hit a home run with this video! For your viewers, another excellent video covering some additional material is "Sporter Rifle Accuracy Part 1 The Rifle" by GunBlue490 who is an older sage rifle expert--exactly the type of guy Rex says to find and learn from.
Great stuff! I hope to train with you sometime in the future, but thanks for sharing good info with everyone that can't seem to make the time to get to your training.
Your tips, have helped me progressively become a better shooter. Just yesterday sighting in my Tikka 270 wsm for hunting. Made sure the parallax was bang on, no ret wiggle. On a sturdy home made shooting table, with an equally sturdy homemade shooting rig. I shot 3 groups adjusting after each to get it bang on. Consentrating on my fundamentals al 3 groups first two shots through the same hole. The 3rd was always a bit off, probably me getting sloppy, but still grouping at 1/2 moa or a touch over. And this is with factory ammo, and not even high end factory ammo. Damn those Tikkas can shoot. Bone stock, except for I added a titanium recoil lug, instead of that cheap aluminum junk. For 650$ can can’t go wrong with that. But honestly 2 years ago I couldn’t shoot that good. Just practicing my fundamentals, and learning other tidbits just from pros like yourself and others, off of UA-cam sure helps. Which me luck, I got a mulie buck tag in southern Alberta. And have scouted out some beasts. Two 200 plus bucks taken by wild tv hunters in the same area I’m hunting during archery... Hoping I can get another one of them in my crosshairs this year. And be calm enough to be able to make the shot. On the Prairies here, 500 yard shots are closer to the norm than out east. Also checked my Bushnell elite tactical 1st focal plane scope. Believe it or not but I ran a tracking test, and it tracks dead on. I was surprised. Next weekend gonna spend a couple days confirming my dope. Chronographed my velocities. And will be shooting gongs out to 700 yards, (all the room I got). Then I’ll have that dope sitting in my rear scope cap. Cheers for all the help!
Rex thx. I a m rocking a m91/30. I just put it in a ati Monte Carlo, glass bedding, rock solid scope mount and a cheap muzzle break. Wouldn't hold zero but before when it was stock I was plucking tennis balls at 100 yds with irons. It was the darn cheap muzzle break smh. So many rounds wasted
Years ago I had a delightfully light Sako hunting rifle in 270. It had a very tight "target" type chamber. Neck turning reduced groups from 4" at 200 yards to first three covered by a dime at 200 yards if there was no wind and you shot fast (the featherweight barrel heated up if you shot slow, and the 4th round was invariably about 4" out at 200 yards whatever you did_)
Thanks for the AWSOME video! It couldn't have been timed better. I've been experiencing some miner accuracy issues lately (1-1.75moa instead of .5 moa) I'm pretty sure I have it traced to not having the toe settled/mated all the way into the rear sandbag and me just being nerves behind the rifle.
Well my friends had a 300 win mag that was shooting 6-in groups and once we tightened up the rear action screw that came loose on the Savage 10 it shot like 2 inch
I remember having one such bad day at the Buffalo gap N.D. match. Ten targets, 10 shots, 9 misses. Oh boy. A five hour ride, motel room, $200 entry fee all waisted money. I did get REX to autograph my gun so it wasn't a complete loss. Lol. I think my issue besides nerves was I ranged targets an wrote dope down in the morning at 50 degrees Fahrenheit an when it was my turn to finally shoot at 1300 It was 90 degrees. All dope was off enough to make me miss at distance targets. I came home an without cleaning or checking anything shot at my regular range an had 1st rd hits from 100 to 750 yds. So it was my mistake not the gun.
Dude hands down to you I was still working up the right dope for temps between what I had data. That's tough. But my love is in someone else's hands now. And my book with my load data and drop charts... .. I regret it
I had a brand new rifle that I could not get to group. Tried all your free checks took it to a gunsmith and it turns out the front action screw was just a tad to long and it wouldn't set in the bed correctly. Ground it down a little and the first group I shot with it was sub 1/2 moa. The little things make a huge difference.
Hey Rex, great video. Lots of great trouble shooting tips. I have a (new) ruger rpr rimfire that shoots 4" groups, tried lots of kinds of ammo, it gets worse than 4" sometimes. Ive checked everything but what is holding the barrel. Thanks again!
Use blue or red thread locker on your threads. Use a torque wrench when you tighten the screws. Tighten the screws to 20 in/lbs. Should stay fine after that.
Speaking of accuracy anomie I put at least 200 rounds down the bore of my Remington 30-06 LR and my accuracy went wild. I was shooting average 1 MOA to half and then all the sudden 2-3 MOA. Come to find out I just needed to clean the bore of my rifle real good and presto! It’s shooting better. I could have been the loose but behind the rifle but it worked.
dirty bore probably explains why my mosin shot better when I was a teen and probably didn't keep the bore clean at all, and now getting back into shooting my mosin and thoroughly cleaned the barrel. could also be muzzle break too.
I had a $200 scope that I took off my DDM4 and threw it on a .338L and it shot like shat. After about 10 flyer rounds I decided to dry fire the 338 and see if my trigger pull was the problem.. Come to find out MY CROSS HAIRS were moving just with dry firing, the 338 blew the scope internals loose... Needless to say I bought a Primary Arms 6-30 w/Athena for my 338 but now I need a new scope for my m4 .....
Great Video in the end the greatest up grade to accuracy and precision from a person that rebarrels on his own lathe - is the BARREL and the LOAD- take this from a person that changes factory barrels to customs - ie cut rifled Kreiger- Bartlein- Brux!!! Study the top benchret shooters and builders in the country Southern precision rifles and the Bench rest Godfather Lester Bruno---Example. ACCURACY + PRECISION IS A BULLETS SPINNING PERFECT AND GOING INSIDE THE SAME PREVIOUS BULLET HOLE OVER AND OVER AT 300 YARDS (WITH NO WIND) -- OK INACCURACY + NONPRECISION THE SAME BULLET IS STILL SPINNING --BUT ITS GYRATING, PRECESSION , OR YAWING AND OR NUTATION IN FLIGHT! CREATING A LARGE GROUP PATTERN AND FLYERS, ACTING DIFFERENTLY FROM SHOT TO SHOT AS IT INTERFACES MECHANICALLY AND CHEMICALLY WITH THE INSIDE OF THE BARREL- THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST INVESTIGATE, FIX AND CHANGE! ANOTHER WAY OF EXPLAINING IT, IS YOU WANT A BULLET TO JUST SPIN--NOT SPIN AND CORKSCREW,(PRECESSION) PITCH AND YAW AT THE SAME TIME! (ASIDE FROM BULLETS KEYHOLING AND OR TUMBLING, WHICH IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE THIS LEAVES BULLET HOLES SIDWAYS IN THE TARGET AND CAN INSTANTLY BE RECOGNIZED AS UNSTABLE.) HARRY POPE (lived 1861 -1950) THE MASTER GODFATHER of super accurate barrel making !! In the early 1900’s found from his experiments QUOTE --" EVERY RIFLE BARREL IS A LAW UNTO ITSELF, THE COMBINATION OF COMPONENTS THAT WILL GIVE GILDTED-EDGE ACCURACY IN ONE BARREL MAY PRODUCE ONLY MEDIOCRE GROUPS IN ANOTHER BARREL OF THE SAME CALIBER AND DIMENSIONS, HEAVY BARRELS ARE DEFINITLEY SUPERIOR AS TO ACCURACY AND MAINTAINING OF ZERO, OTHER FACTORS BEING EQUAL THE CORRECT BEDDING OF THE BOLT ACTION IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE AND THE BULLET SHAPE AND UNIFORMITY IS EXTEAMLY IMPORTANT FOR ACCURACY AND A FIVE, SIX OR EIGHT NARROW LANDS AND WIDE GROVES MADE INTO A BARREL, OTHER FACTORS BEING EQUAL, MAKE FOR A MORE ACCURATE BARREL THAN A LESSER NUMBER OF LANDS AND GROVES OF EQUAL WIDTHS" end QUOTE
Great upload I just lived this out. One of my SWFA SS scopes was acting goofy for a few range trips so I finally put on a trusty old VX3 from back in the day and all problems cleared up. Anyone have experience with their customer service?
It took me 2 days to find all the videos and download the 101 series! I assume there were only 101 videos (I assume the pun was intended) as that's all I found.
Could be the barrel heating up causing a thermal expansion. Try adjusting the torque of the barrel nut to spec. Could also be a thermal issue with the scope mount - causing the mount to shift when it heats up. Could also be an over gassing problem which is heating up the firing chamber and causing a thermal shift.
Or maybe, just maybe, if you look carefully you mighty find that someone went and bolted an IOR on top of you rifle. It happens. Had me chasing my tale for weeks.
My problem is at 100@200yrds I shoot submoa at 300 it's crap I can't figure it I do reload myself and have never ran other ammo it's only had about 40 round put through it I thought about breeding it.
russell I keep hearing that the 4-14 from primary arms is excellent for the price. And it doesn’t look to big. I just ordered one last night on ebay from Primary Arms. It was an open box unit for $154.00. Figured I couldn’t go wrong after all the reviews that I watched. Including one from Rex who claims it’s worthy himself.
vernon gambill I’m going to do my best to answer this. The velocity you can achieve is not the most important thing about your ammo. Finding a good, safe and consistent load is what you want. Since you will be “re-zeroing” for each shot, the trajectory will simply be accounted for during your calculations to a firing solution. I hope this helps somewhat? Enjoy that awesome caliber!(:
Hey Rex have you seen the new kid on the block from Australia the Woomera LA 105 or the LA 102 both are available in 6.5 creedmoor and both are tack drivers Lithgow Arms is no real new kid they have been making military arms for over 100 years in Australia
He did a review on the sig, and primary arms and I believe the 3rd was a nightforce. Basically comparing various japanese scopes. Not sure if that's what you're asking about or not.
Don’t forget to check the nut behind the wheel!
For sure! Let someone else try it. I gave mine to someone, and he looks at it and says "something's loose in the trigger." Sure enough, the bolt in my timney trigger came loose!
I usually find it's the nut behind the bolt that's causing problems.
Kilokilo34 Often an I-D-I-O-T error! Ask me how I know!
It`s been me a couple of times. LOL!!
This dude is smart, empathetic and great at delivering information. You can tell he’s a great guy and a great shot.
this channel is a gold mine. thank you for doing this.
Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to film and edit it and of course for positing it for our benefit. Keep up the good work! -Migs
Always make sure to check the trigger actuator first! Although it could be either the cheapest or most expensive problem to fix.

jacknifedbl What? All the 6.5 creedmoor rounds weren't in the same hole? I thought that was the Good Lords caliber. Lol
Lmao that's epic. I had to help a guy who mounted his optic 90 deg left... It was funny... I was respectful as well.
Ha, I have relative who has been hunting longer than I have. And he is stubborn as hell. He has no cheek weld on his rifle, and I try to explain to him how he would shoot better with a simple sleeve that raises his comb up so he can get a good cheek weld. But nope, he’s fine. great info
I hear that my rifle is actually pretty accurate how do I troubleshoot myself?
Personal. When all else fails, read the instructions...i.e. the Bible.
Shooting. Shoot with a friend who is better than you or get an instructor.
Great tips as usual. In the Sniper 101 series I see that spin drift corrections made easy and ranging enemy fire- crack thump method, are now listed as private.
that is a big problem

I’ve spent a whole lot of time trying to explain this to people. A lot of rifles are capable of 1/4 moa, just not their owners.

Rule one check the knob on the end of it!!
Harmonics are the number one thing that makes a gun accurate or inaccurate.
SOOOO glad I found this channel!!

Thanks for the great tips Rex for trying to avoid "minute of basketball" performance LOL
Yes! My action screws were loose to my frame!

I had to re-tighten the screws to the scope mounts, made a whole lot of difference
Use blue or red thread locker on your threads.
Use a torque wrench when you tighten the screws.
Tighten the screws to 20 in/lbs.
Should stay fine after that.
Thanks Rex, you rule!
Excellent points. But it is very difficult to shoot small groups with factory rolled ammo
Speaking of accuracy anomie I put at least 200 rounds down the bore of my Remington 30-06 LR and my accuracy went wild. I was shooting average 1 MOA to half and then all the sudden 2-3 MOA. My .308 was all over today and im wondering if the barrel being dirty is the culprit
@@mrs.vasquezz maybe so. Clean her out real good and take some steady shots.
@@NaterTaterOutdoors i did and lubed it, i noticed the trigger pull was better with oiling
@@mrs.vasquezz what rifle do you own?
@@NaterTaterOutdoors savage11
dirty bore probably explains why my mosin shot better when I was a teen and probably didn't keep the bore clean at all, and now getting back into shooting my mosin and thoroughly cleaned the barrel. could also be muzzle break too.
I have to watch this again. I spent the whole time waiting for Rambo to make his appearance! 😆
2:32 my word, Rex on AM radio...
Awesome info!!!!
Key word, “L O G I C A L” !
Thnx ;$
In the early 1900’s found from his experiments QUOTE --" EVERY RIFLE BARREL IS A LAW UNTO ITSELF, THE COMBINATION OF COMPONENTS THAT WILL GIVE GILDTED-EDGE ACCURACY IN ONE BARREL MAY PRODUCE ONLY MEDIOCRE GROUPS IN ANOTHER BARREL OF THE SAME CALIBER AND DIMENSIONS, HEAVY BARRELS ARE DEFINITLEY SUPERIOR AS TO ACCURACY AND MAINTAINING OF ZERO, OTHER FACTORS BEING EQUAL THE CORRECT BEDDING OF THE BOLT ACTION IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE AND THE BULLET SHAPE AND UNIFORMITY IS EXTEAMLY IMPORTANT FOR ACCURACY AND A FIVE, SIX OR EIGHT NARROW LANDS AND WIDE GROVES MADE INTO A BARREL, OTHER FACTORS BEING EQUAL, MAKE FOR A MORE ACCURATE BARREL THAN A LESSER NUMBER OF LANDS AND GROVES OF EQUAL WIDTHS" end QUOTE
a factory barrel can vary Mechanicaly and chemicaly 1-5 MOA as a good generliaztion
Have new rifle and tried two different scopes…. It’s all over the place … no consistency… what could be wrong with barrel ?
My problem now is age, I can go to the range but cannot do any hiking to long-range areas, my sons use my scoped rifles now.
Great Video Rex.
Guys Get training. Most guys lack good fundamentals and knowledge of what is really happening.
Great video-more like this in the future!
What’s your thoughts on shooting off a bag/backpack from the prone?
I was getting 1.8 moa with my 10/22 with the action screw loose... the day before I was shooting like 2.5 moa with the screw fine, what the deuce....
GENIUS!!!!! love your videos dude!
Great upload I just lived this out. One of my SWFA SS scopes was acting goofy for a few range trips so I finally put on a trusty old VX3 from back in the day and all problems cleared up. Anyone have experience with their customer service?
What is your favorite action screw torque spec?
Yes, my rifle is having accuracy problems. It says the problems are caused by operator error. I disagree, but what do I know?
Green rolling hills, cotton ball clouds. Where's the rivers of chocolate and trees that give beer?
It took me 2 days to find all the videos and download the 101 series!
I assume there were only 101 videos (I assume the pun was intended) as that's all I found.
I dig the Rex Grid. Is there any chance for an mRad version?
308. 3 rounds center then 2 round about 4 inches up and left, Everytime,
Multiple shooters, including a swat sniper
Ideas?? Armalite ar10

Honestly, most of my accuracy problems are due to me being a dolt behind the gun. However, I did have a loose scope once.
Or maybe, just maybe, if you look carefully you mighty find that someone went and bolted an IOR on top of you rifle. It happens. Had me chasing my tale for weeks.
excellent video brother!!!
Finger placement on trigger can effect inconsistent shots
My problem is at 100@200yrds I shoot submoa at 300 it's crap I can't figure it I do reload myself and have never ran other ammo it's only had about 40 round put through it I thought about breeding it.
Had some poi shifts today. But then I realized that it was zeroed for about 70 degrees and it was 95 today.
Rexy baby youz beautiful, great vid as always man! Simple stuff, but some I hadn't thought of, good shit
I like that rifle, what are the details on it? Thanks.
So you’re saying the shooter may have a screw loose. I’ve seen that out in the field
whats a good scope for a AR10 in 308 looking for 50-650 yard accuracy.
russell I keep hearing that the 4-14 from primary arms is excellent for the price. And it doesn’t look to big. I just ordered one last night on ebay from Primary Arms. It was an open box unit for $154.00. Figured I couldn’t go wrong after all the reviews that I watched. Including one from Rex who claims it’s worthy himself.
@@46dgarrison im sorry i could never buy an optic for a gun under 200$. my scope rings will cost more than that.
@Changing Magazine haha no one gives a fuck about what you think.
You'll be surprised what one cup of coffee can do to your accuracy.
Hey Rex love your videos question I have a 6.5 x55 Kimble rifle can I load it to equal the 6.5 credmore thanks Vern
vernon gambill I’m going to do my best to answer this.
Hey Rex have you seen the new kid on the block from Australia the Woomera LA 105 or the LA 102 both are available in 6.5 creedmoor and both are tack drivers Lithgow Arms is no real new kid they have been making military arms for over 100 years in Australia
minute of basketball haha
Mysterious things happen when a crosshair is broken. Took us 30 rounds to recognize the problem.
When you posting a review on those scopes? Patiently waiting in Texas :)
He did a review on the sig, and primary arms and I believe the 3rd was a nightforce. Basically comparing various japanese scopes. Not sure if that's what you're asking about or not.
scope actually works great, nothing new to report. :)
Klinton O'Donnell I saw the review with NF. Vortex. And primary arms. But not the sig
Saw the US Optics B17 in use. Wondering if there is a review coming on that optic?
What cause some guns to shoot flier on cold bore shot??
My action screws were loose thanks
I've seen guys who they tied barrel to chassis with a thin robe, can't be good?
Some times the target won't stand still. 🏃
