The new VW T7 California at the Caravan Salon, Düsseldorf

- We head out to Düsseldorf, to The Caravan Salon to get a first look of the new Volkswagen T7 California concept. It looked great in all the VW press release photos, so we wanted to go see it for real.
I can tell you this, Volkswagen did not disappoint. Based on the T7 multivan, the new California looks like a true evolution of the iconic VW camper van. They say concept but we're told this is 95% of what the finished 2024 California will look like.
Would i buy one? No.. I have too many children, haha. If I was retired or had a colour TV a decade ago, yes i would 100% be getting my name on the waiting list for the VW T7 California.
Haters are going to hate, lovers will love this as the best California camper van Volkswagen have ever made.

Looks awesome.
"The British like to make it awkward" - REALLY? You need to educate yourself matey.
The British were the first nation to formalise highway use (The 1773 General Highways Act) and have never deviated from driving on the left. By contrast, all continental European countries have changed from driving on the left to driving on the right - a change heavily influenced by the petty French, for no better reason than, post-Revolution, the peasants didn't want to driver on the same side of the road as the aristocracy used to.
Yay - Vive La France. 🙄
Thanks for the education, I think 🤔
Amazing tech on display there no doubt but still the ugliest transporter they've ever released IMO but each to their own ill never afford one lol :)
It's a grow but I can see why people are taking a while 😁
The roof height looks too low. You can’t stand up under the tailgate or awnings
I'd say it's the same as a T6.1 Cali. Maybe a tiny bit lower. I'm 6" for reference
can’t wait to see how THQ modify it!! which wheels, tyres, coilover set would you put on this?
I can't wait to get our hands on one :)
Keep on with the T7 products!!We’ll likely be getting a Multivan, hired one for a week from VW for a family trip and it was brilliant. Will need some parts to give it that plus look! 🤟🏻
We will. This have given us drive to re visit all our original developments
Please do. Just got ours and looking for nod parts!!
I love it. Give it a nice orange two tone paint job and it would be beautiful. One thing I have learnt about VW fans is they are highly resistant to change! The T7 and ID Buzz are both brilliant but most dismiss them without even seeing them in the flesh.
No you are talking me language. I totally agree with you
That is the best review I have seen of this van 👍 and at first when I saw the multivan I wasn't keen but it has really grown on me and I am looking forward to seeing the production van and of course the price!! It would look great in a vibrant orange two tone.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope VW do some vibrant colours. Having said that, if they bring back flannel grey, I'm sold 😍
@@THQAutomotive we need vibrant colours on this van is flannel grey the same colour as the new Sven Hedin Ltd Edition I wonder as I love that colour but orange is my favourite colour and these vans need the funk 😍
Decent video and a great insight into what’s coming our way. Thanks for taking the time to go and film it.
@@ade9685 our pleasure. Thanks for watching 😊
Virtually the same van. Just more expensive
Any speculation on Uk pricing ? I think I’d let my 6.1 go for one of these
I've read somewhere around £65k. Don't hold me to that though.
@@THQAutomotive interesting, I’d be in for around 70 with some options, appreciate the response 👍
@@rubinsteinkleer8334 no problem
Try an Alphard. Much better and a tenth of the price
Where is the storage.? Top loading useless fridge. Low roof. Fidly bed. Ugly looking van. Too exensive for what you get.
Ok, it seems most really like it 🤷🏻♂️😊
If only I was a midget.. Think I will stick with the T6.1 for now!
It doesn't seem any smaller inside really, it's longer than a SWB T6.1 🤷🏻♂️
I use my T6 to travel through France and complain about British roads and the idiots who votes Brexit
haha, yep fair point
🤣🤣Rent free 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
Stay in France then
Great video! Great product! The only thing is the price! Looks premium, is premium, expect it to be well outside my and many others reach. But that’s ok, look forward to seeing what you do with it next year! 💯🤙
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah it's not going to be cheap but I do think it'll be in line with the T6.1 California.
Great review! Please do keep developing new products for the Multivan. Loved the write up in VWT Mag of the one you modified
We will do. We'll now back at it :)
As the next generation of California and the niche buying market VW already have for these I think they've nailed it... Still maintain, the biggest error they made was trying to maintain the T' and transporter branding for this platform. Great review 🤙🏻
Thank you 😊
One thing that never has changed is the back doors . Say with the barndoors. Why not try for a barndoor half tail gate
Interesting idea 🤔
@@THQAutomotive ur be the ones who could do it to
@@jamestastic70 I feel a build coming on 😜
@TransporterHQ happy days ...
Top video, and the best review I’ve watched on the new dream motor. Thanks for posting and I’m looking forward to seeing your mods. 👏👏👍
Thank you for your kind words 🙏
Proper genius thinking with the layout and versatility. External appearance bang average but thats where you put your own personality in... love it ! Great review...
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to comment 😊
Really nice camper. Shame though there’s no Van platform for conversion only the soon to be Ford Transporter
I think the ford VW collaboration might surprise people. Have you seen how different the ranger and Amarok are?
Great video and so nice of Alex to let us have a closer look , that is a lovely van and what an investment.
Great work and great video🤙
Yeah Alex was great. I'm not sure many got so close.
As always a great video one beautiful vehicle 👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks Peter😊
Love the slide in sail awning, is that something you have for the current line up?
We don't but we will 100% look into making something similar
nice video, is there any latest news on the date for replacement for the 6.1 panel van?
Not yet and we're getting mixed messages from various people at VW
Great review, however I love my California T6.1 Coast.
I don't blame you, It's a great vehicle. Thanks for your comment
Is the new transporter going to be a similar looking van but panel version?
No this won't be the new van base.
Great video, California looks good on the inside.
Super impressive and I'm fussy
Noooo! You can't stop developing things for the T7. I'm still waiting, hopping, to get SoLow air on my T7. Been waiting since your first T7 video, so a year or so.
Flush opening windows on the back doors would be nice to. Mind you, opening windows for the back doors is on the factory options list.
Also, rumour has it, that the T7 hybrid will get the new bigger battery pack, that is said to double the e-range.
The bigger battery would be great. It's just not quite enough at the minute. Don't worry, we'll get back on the T7 development now 😊
@@THQAutomotivegreat to hear that you're back working on stuff for the T7.
Riding on air would really make me a happy camper (pun intended)
@@rogersittnikow 😊

Yeah it's a strange one the whole 'T' thing. To start with the Multivan was referred to as the T7 Multivan. They then seemed to drop the T7 and it just become the Multivan. They do seem to be referring to this as the T7 California though.
@@THQAutomotive people will come round, just like the Buzz it takes time, the VW scene seems to look backwards to the classics more than forwards to innovation
@@h12st_d63 you hit the nail on the head there.
On the plus side twin sliders good for uk, on the minus if stays as shown very little cupboard space compared to current California, no under seat draw and beds appear to be narrow. Most of the things like interior lighting, sockets, tailgate seats ( rear shower is an option) already on California. Should be a better daily driver, but camper I’m not so sure. Great video as always from Transporter HQ.
Yeah I see your point. Let's see if VW bring any revisions for the finished version. Glad you enjoyed the video.
T7 sucks! It’s not a good vehicle for a camper van. And this California has no sliding table, less storage, narrower beds and so on. Worst California ever.
This summer I have been driving across Europe and haven’t seen a single T7 on the road.
I would like to see T7 sales reports. I am sure it is a failure.
@@sanionara thank you for your comment. I like to hear everyone's opinion. I actually saw loads of multivan's this year when I drove through France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. I guess I'm looking out for them though.
Great video, and I like it - I can understand the criticism by people comparing it with a T6 California, but also think it might open a new market for people who think the current version is too big? Do you think there will be an ID Buzz LWB camper, as that would be a great lineup for this segment?
I don't think will do an ID-Buzz camper. I think the full electric California will come with the T6.1 commercial vehicle replacement
@@THQAutomotive of course! More of a 2 berth Multivan and 4 berth T7/8 (whatever it’ll be called!) would be cool
I'm dying to find out if it will be called a T7.1/T8 etc. If i was a better man, I'd put my money on T7.1 @@AlexP-hl4wn
I’m shocked at how nice it looks
It does look great
Its too small for what will undoubtedly be an eye-watering expensive vehicle!
I think it's actually too large; it's extra length precludes its use as a car replacement.
It's longer that a SWB T5 / T6 but shorter than a LWB. I'd happy use it as a daily and park in regular spaces for sure.
Front end 💩
I like it 🤷🏻♂️
Nice van! Thanks for the vid mate. 👍
No problem, glad you liked it
Very nice
Yeah I think so. Great work VW :)
Do you know the engine choices/power? Like the idea of hybrids for now
If its the same as the current T7 Multivan (which I'm told it will be) The TDI and 1.4 Petrol hybrid are both about 200BHP
@@THQAutomotive great video btw
Thank you Sir :) @@SimonPilling
For 80k where is the toilet?
Not sure I’d want to piss in anything I paid 80k for 😂
Expensive piece of kit.
Yeah kind of, but you see high end converted camper vans for £80K plus nowadays.
Love the design, but I just cant see the benefit in paying huge amounts of money against a more bespoke option that is half the price. Also thinking a 1.4 Hybrid with all that weight will be a shocker...
Our 1.4 hybrid multi van did seem to have plenty of pull. I still think the 2.0 TDI will be the better option though.
