Had to start up my kiln and pretty much was consumed with a technique by Lana Wilson on Ceramic Art Daily ceramicartsdail... ,
I've wanted to explore this effect for some time and it's the perfect technique for my new "texture fetish". The challenge is I didn't have colorants to add to slip...or even steel wool (yeah...we go plastic ;), so I adapted somewhat by using my underglazes and a sponge. Needless to say I'll be adding more texture to my pieces ....this is something I both loved doing with (hopefully) the results I like want to see! Kiln opening tomorrow folks!
Hope you enjoy!

Should add pics of finished pieces to the end of the video.
Thanks Susan...it's about ready to shut off and then comes the wait time...the longest part of the process for me. Can't wait to mix Mottled Spice, I bet your pieces turn out wonderful with it...looks lovely in the sample photos!
I can't wait to see the results! I often use my mottled spice (brown) from laguna to highlight impressions but haven't tried watering it down (sure looks easier!). Where did you get your stamp pad from? I really need to get one!
I love the finished product! Thanks for sharing :-)
Hi! Awesome technique. What glaze/stain/mixture are you using?
OH! I think I got the stamp pad from The Big Ceramics Superstore or it was Axner!
Hi Linda! Some I got at yard sales and I do remember buying the bigger set from ebay :) !
Awesome! Can't wait to see what emerges...
where did you get the letter stamps I have been looking everywhere and great technique by the way
Very cool! BTW, I found lots of alphabet stamps on EBAY. Ordered 2 sets! I also ordered some stamps from a couple of shops on ETSY. Very excited to receive them!
Hi! Thanks. My question actually refers to the black... video title reads “underglaze” but your remarks say “black glaze” & you mention the glossiness... did you apply Black Glaze, or Underglaze please?
Louise Michaels Ahh, yes... you are correct..it actually was both! The black was a dipping black gloss "glaze" I had (forgot about that) I'm not sure if the brand because it was given to me mixed when I purchased the kiln) The colors were underglaze, but the treatment is a wash.
Yes I agree would help more to show complete pot!!! Other wise were just putting on black stuff and wiping it off
The description has a link to the final product. :) This video was created in real time, so results took two weeks.
I have a question. I love the idea of this, but I'm confused. Is this done on greenware that is bone dry or a piece that has already been bisque fired. I guess I have to assume it has already been fired. Can you set me straight?
Yes, you are correct! These pieces were already bisque fired. You need the absorption of the bisque for for the wash effect to work when wiping. How this helps! 😁
@@hobbypotter Very helpful! One more question. I know that you put a white glaze on the inside. Did you seal the outside at all? A clear glaze?
I did leave the outside unglazed. 😁
@@hobbypotter And if you don't mind one more question............cuz I'm really interested in this technique!!!............how many coats of the underglazes did you apply before you started lightly touching them with the sponge to dilute them a little?
@@hobbypotter Are you up for one more question? I do love this technique! Did you use more than one coat of the underglazes before you swiped at them with the damp sponge?
Can you explain which kind of colour are you using for those stamped letters ? Is it ordinary stamp ink or ceramic stain/colour? Are those mugs glazed after stamping ?
Thank you !
Great question! I'm using Potters Pad (which is an underglaze ink pad).Mine is from Minnesota Clay Co. It comes in a variety of colors! Give it a go... it's too much fun!!!
Thank you very much for such a fast and precise answer!
How cool Tammy! I just did some glazing of chawans and yunomis where I did peace, love and joy but using Chinese symbols.
thanks a lot. very useful knowledge.👍🙏❤️💓
No fired sample?
Did you use Amaco Velvet Underglaze or Glaze?
Hi Louise! There was underglazes from Duncan EZ Stroke underglazes ( it was 6 years ago so I had to look at the lids to remember lol :) If you look on Google for the numbers on the top of the lids, you'll see which colors I was using. Hope this helps!
Is there a follow up to glazed pieces?..
Hi Karen! Yes, the link in the description box leads to the finished piece. Once a video is published I can't add photos to it. This one was made in "real time"... at the time, so results happened about 2 weeks later :D Thanks for our question!
Always ever see, or show final result!
After that technique, can you glaze it?
Mayra Zayas Yes! If you are using underglazes, a nice clear coat would be wonderful!
hobbypotter before fire it?
Mayra Zayas well that depends. Under glaze will smear when applying the clear if you haven't fired it at low fire first. Clear may also blur fine lines after a firing. You may have to test it first :)
hobbypotter thanks!
