The Magnetar is a true powerhouse and was happy to pay €1599 for this beast of a machine.
Not only visually but also audio wise this is a huge upgrade coming from a high end Sony player.
I switched earlier this month and it’s like watching entirely new movies. So much detail and nuance aswell as realistic yet rich colors. It is unmatched.
What I also like is that I can easily insert R1 Blu Rays and DVD’s and they scale up impressively with especially Blu Rays almost reaching 4K visual fidelity.
DVD’s vary but give an impressive upscale without jagged edges or noise.
Hooking up a external HD on the back USB is easy and you can access every single file imaginable quick and easy.
And to finish it off my super audio cd’s and DVD Audio sound amazing.
I have a seperate CD player, amp and speakers yet I am looking for a way to attach this beast to my audio set up as the quality of the audio is hard to describe and has to be heard to be believed.
All in all very happy to have taken the plunge.
Thanks!
I cherish my Oppo 203 (and this player seems almost exactly the same but much more expensive). The Oppo plays any kind of disc I can find (and I own a few SACDs and DVD-Audio's). Mostly used for video like 4K HDR Blu-rays. When new, it was "only" $500US which compared to the UDP800, seems like a bargain. Still works like new, so no need to replace it (yet).
I think the resell of the old oppos are what enables the high price on these new units. If Panasonic adds support for sacd it would be a game changer.
@@JilesMcCoy Panasonic can add SACD capability and a corresponding premium on price, and there would still be people buying such a player.
I have an Oppo 203 I purchased last year used in excellent+ condition physically and functionally (with current firmware). I installed a simple all region kit for blu ray discs. This would have me completely covered for seemingly all practical discs and formats.
After a couple months use the 203's 4k abilities went wonky with weird colorbar flashes, pixel blocks and slow playback. I've tried reset and other attempts to cure with no luck. I also have an Oppo BDP 103 with region free blu ray ability. The 103 works without issue but it was never made for 4k disc playback.
So my dilemma is what to do/get for a uhd 4k disc player(?). I need analog audio outputs, at least in stereo channels. I only use physical media playback as I have no interest in downloads, streaming, internet abilities or such on a player. like Oppo brand's product designs and functions, but would hate to get another Oppo 203 only to have issues with it arise before too long.
Not hoping for any real answers here but any input or further insight might be helpful.
Any worries about the laser not reading triple layer 4k discs? I really want to invest in a panny for the HCX processor but im put off by the lasers wearing out. I'm not sure if the tone mapping is worth the cost but at a 2-3 year lifespan and near firmware obsolescence I've been looking at the magnetar for a substitute.
I don’t know that the pannys are wearing out after 2 years. I’ve had mine since release day and it’s going strong. I am sure there are a number of units that break though.
This is suppose to replace the famous oppo bluray
💯
Hi there, another great review, it would be great to see the Magnetar against a Oppo or Panasonic to see the difference in disc playback
If there is any processing involved the Panasonic destroys the Oppo and Magnetar. It has a much more advanced chipset. Unprocessed video will be the same amongst the 3. Its just passing whats on the disc to the video display. The Magnetar is for folks wanting its audio features and disc reading capabilities.
You mentioned do you spending money on a older Oppo player and then this new one for 2 channel audiophiles plus had the same Acurus Muse player that I’m looking to get for myself for both a Christmas and a Birthday present coming up the 1st week of January but it will be hard to find a place that sells it and a installation to my system which I have the Oppo 205 4k player and I don’t know if it does the 4k UHD which I just remembered in my bedroom system I had played a few on the Oppo 203 4k blu ray player just like an extra one in my main room with the 205 Oppo which by the way besides all of balanced XLR connections, audiophiles would like it has all of the analog connections on the back as well. Now I wouldn’t want this new one which was about the original price of the Oppo 205 player which I’ve seen for sale online asking for around $3,500-$4000 for some in great condition as mine is and the new player doesn’t play 8k or the ability to as it sounds. So are there other players that go beyond the Oppo 4k uhd if it so- I’d save my money for the Acurus Muse that was the preamp to the player you had there.
There isn’t an 8k player. The new technology is better 4k upscaling and tone mapping that you see in the Panasonic players.
What about the The Magnetar UDP 900?
I’ve not seen that one before!
Does the Sony UBP-X800m2 with Bluetooth at $250 do the same thing this Blu-ray player does? Just looking for a good quality Blu-ray player that plays all my music and video discs at a reasonable price.
No, its does the main things, but not all of the things. It will be great for Straight HDMI playback of dvd and Blu-ray discs.
Sorry but the UBP-X800m2 is not in the same league as this Magnetar.

No, i own one and it stops at random. I has a cheaply made drive. For every now and then use it will do.
I have a oppo 203 from 2017 in europa holland cost at that time 850 EURO s now 2024 it plays on and on. No fall. But he is old now. You can buy the magnetar 800 in holland 1500 euro now. A lot of money but i think it is the only one to have a new one for 4 k disks.
Do you need the XLR audio outputs? Or something like sacd playback?
hi very expensive $1500 US dollars for a blu ray player that does not have tone mapping. I would rather buy a Panasonic that does.
Thanks for the video as always good job.
Exactly. How is this supposed to save bluray? 😅😅
Thanks for watching!
I would get one of these even at the steep price.
Awesome!
I don't get how an expensive player can be "The Savior of 4k Blue-Ray Disc". There are several more affordable players that do a fine job.
There are, but this is an example
Of an enthusiast player that appeals to the oppophile.
@@JilesMcCoy Are there enough "oppophiles" to save 4K discs?
And none of those players can be made region free from the factory which alone makes the Magnetar better than all of those players
@@ReZel80657 I don't have any argument that the Magnetar is a better player, just don't think it is the savior of 4k discs.
@@ReZel80657 They sell region free Magnetars in the Oppo store. (I live in Europe)
Here's the issue with the Magnetars:
These are basically clones of the Oppo UDP-203 (the Magnetar 900 is more like the Oppo 205 and Pioneer LX800), though the Cambridge Audio CXUHD, which I own alongside a Panasonic UB9000, was really the first actual 203 clone. They're exactly the same, except for the lack of analog outs on the Cambridge.
These Magnetars and Reavons, really the only two Oppo copies left on the market, are seriously overpriced, and I said the same thing about the UB9000 - now, the Panasonic flagship seems like a bargain compared to these MediaTek based players.
All of that being said, the MediaTek based units like the Oppos, the Cambridge, the Reavons and the Magnetars, all have better day to day operational features that the Panasonics do not - from aspect ratio control to automatically stretch 4:3 DVD content and a zoom button on the remotes to blow up non anamorphic DVDs to defeatable auto power turnoff, source direct setting, illuminated LED light on the power buttons and less intimidating menus/video adjustment controls.
Still, there's no denying that the HCX processor in the higher end Panasonics yields better picture quality compared to the MediaTek based players - in some cases, it's significantly different. Blu-ray discs as upscaled by the UB9000, for example, look so much more detailed, color rich and cleaner as compared to when I play them on the CXUHD, and this is because of the Pannys superior multi tap chroma upsampling algorithm.
Thanks for watching!
This is an OPPO in sheep's skin. Why anyone would buy this nonsense does not make sense. Is $3000 worth the difference between the Panasonic 820 and 9000. I have had an OPPO since 2017 and also a Panasonic 820-K.
Better than buying a discontinued Oppo.
Make it a digit cheaper and we can talk about it..
Nice
found my player noisy and music cd's skip with it 🤣do not recommended
Liar
@ODB_ why should I lie 🤔 its that bad I put some sound proofing foam inside
Bummer :-(
@JilesMcCoy Fixed my noisy drive for now , put some lube on disc clamp very cheap plastic molded into case , also put some foam between drive and drive shielding to add pressure 👍 music cds play without skipping now 🤣 so cheap for money
