Unfortunately, I have to inform you that part 2 is gonna be delayed for a while.
I'm currently dealing with a recent loss in my family and some mental health stuff related to grief. My mom passed away a few months ago, and I'm still trying to figure things out and allowing myself to process everything
So I'll take some time to focus on myself, and when I feel I can tackle another big video again, I'll work on part two
Also please don't worry about me! I'm already seeing a therapist I just need some time to cope and be around my friends and family.

What annoys me the most about Lagoona is how they changed her nationality. I feel like she was originally designed to be Australian and her love for swimming really tied Australian and sea monster together really well (we like our swimming and beaches here). She was my favourite character as a child because she was Aussie and you almost never see Australian characters outside of Australian media. Her accent in the original was awful (it sounds like an American putting it on), but I don’t see why it’s so hard to hire an Australian voice actor. They could have even taken the extra step and made her of aboriginal descent if inclusivity was something they were really worried about. And I agree, seeing an original Latina character with inspiration from monsters and stories from their culture would have been so much better. Surely there’s someone creative enough to come up with a new monster and a unique monster name.
Rant aside, I love your art! You really tied everything together while making it still new really nicely. Good job ❤️
Thank you so much for your comment 💜, and yeah as a Mexican I don't feel happy with the idea that my representation came at the cost of someone elses. And it is also sad that in both cases they could have gone for an aboriginal or indigenous route with her character and at the end they didn't

I wouldn’t mind giving lagoona an actress (from Australia) that wasn’t white (black could really work for her hair) in the live action, but she’s still gotta be blue, if you get what I mean, I mean it’s in her name
And as an Asian person, I feel the same about draculaura. Honestly, the only race swapping that could’ve made sense and I would’ve liked was making abbey south or southeast Asian. She’s supposed to be an exchange student from the Himalayas, but in g1 everything pointed to her being Slavic
Yeah, for real, like I don't want a new Latina character, I freaking want SKELITA! Like, my family who has always held dear with extreme love our Mexican culture gifted her to me in the early days of the doll's debut because even when they didn't like Monster High, they loved her. I still have her, and I love it! I don't want them to swap the race of an already established character, I want Skelita, she's so pretty and so well done and interesting, and even though her backstory was inconsistent with my culture, the effort and the designs were big ones. I don't want a new latino character, I want the one we already have to be reintroduced properly
Honestly, my biggest problem with G3 was the fact that they tried making the outfits more... Mainstream? When MH was known for more alternative fashion? While alt fashion is currently trending on social media? Truly, not the best decision. G3 honestly looked like more monster girl barbies than Monster High. I really love your redesigns!
Though, Draculaura's ended up looking closer to sweet lolita or even "bittersweet" lolita, which is a combination of both gothic and sweet, if I remember correctly. Her outfit also looks more casual, which is understandable since she will have to go to school wearing that.
Yessss! The alternative fashion of monster high dolls were my favorite part! That's why I always begged my mom to get them for me because they didn't look like Barbie dolls. I wish the clothing choices werent so mainstream, or at the very least good lol
I really wish they had the same edgyness to their outfits as they used to, but I can understand why they don't :( although MH got a lot of love especially in recent years, the amount of hate coming from parents at the time they were released was insane, I know so many people personally who just weren't allowed the dolls full stop growing up because of the alternative fashion, so I kinda understand why they changed it to appeal to more people
yeah it does suck. Alternative fashion never gets to spotlight and G3 just sort of pulled that out from under the rug for alt people 😭
i mean i don’t wanna be that person, but at the time that Monster High was released, Alternative fashion was at its peak, that’s how Garret (the creator) had the idea, he just encountered a group of girls at the mall who happened to be shopping at an alternative fashion store. Emo/Scene/Punk and Goth culture and fashion was so popular back then, even Frankie has literally the style that Avril Lavigne had back in those days, including the hairstyle that Avril used in the “Girlfriend” music video.. they are a product of its time. Just search up the release date and remember how things were back then and it makes sense, that’s why Bratz wasn’t a thing anymore, they were dated and monster high was fresh because it was right on time.
@@dokichamoy4965 Exactly!! The fashions they have in the current G3 animation and dolls all reflect the styles that are popular nowadays, combined with their monster features. Although alternative fashion has definitely grown in popularity again in recent years, it’s still not as popular as like high glamour, designer brands and preppy fashion is currently, so it makes complete sense that that’s what doll lines are basing their fashion around
My problem just has to do with how kiddie everything looks compared to the original. it’s really like if gen 4 mlp turned into gen 1, or the teen Titans fiasco. like their designs look like they were made for toddlers, instead of ten year olds.

He didn’t confirm, he just said she wasn’t ever planned to be lesbian but he wasn’t against the idea, and people took that to be “confirmation”. It’s just a headcannon everyone (including myself) loves. He also doesn’t work at Mattel anymore and the past two generations had her straight and since it’s not “his” anymore, they’re just gonna continue with her being a straight woman until we CHANGE THEIR MINDS, LISTEN TO US MATTEL 😂🙌

I'll be honest, I'm definitely on the spot that does not like the reboot. Not just cause it completely ignores the alt aesthetic that made Monster High into what it is, but just the fact that they went out of their way to wreck so much that was amazing.
Draculaura being part witch and witchcraft being disliked in this continuity is beyond insulting when one of the nicer looking dolls was a pop star witch, Casta Fierce. I like witchcraft, and the idea that monsters would hate it and see it as frowned upon is just...Why?
Not just that, but overall the changes are so stupid. Turning Laguna Latina was stupid when you could easily get one of the other characters from Monster High in to fit that and represent Latin culture, G1 represented every damn culture in the world! I genuinely mean it, they had excellent representation and now they're squandering it with this watered down work...Man, it annoys me.
Your ideas feel much closer to home and really hammer home that Monster High should have kept the alt feel it had. Your art style is excellent too, which adds to it, but the ideas you had really made it feel like genuinely fun stuff. I could even kinda tolerate that they wrecked Laguna's personality to make her into Cleo's goon/bestie cause you did such a good job with it.
I'm still salty that they won't have Draculaura's original accent. It gave her more character and she still spoke in a way that was coherent
Agreed, so many artists I follow were able to modernize and diversify MH without taking away their charm, but the actual Monster High franchise is closer to looking like Barbie with every reboot, and there are so many changes don't make any sense (trying to diversify but turning a lesbian character straight, Lagoona losing her whole aesthetic, basically watering down alt styles, plus the things you commented on)
Lagoona was always the daughter of an ocean nymph as _well_ as a sea monster. They just didn't bring it up very often.
I always likes Deuce with Cleo just because the snake and mummy thing just... made sense. It felt like shorthand. I didnt question their relationship because it just made sense to have the snake guy with the mummy girl, even if Cleo was kind of a brat and he was just kind of an accessory for her.
Nooo, they really loved each other, the nice thing about their relationship is Cleo being kinda evil sometimes with the other characters but loving Deuce.
nah cleo and deuce were a sweet couple, you could tell amidst cleo's materializing personality she still really cared about him.

I liked it for irl mythology reasons😅😅😅, Cleo is named after Queen Cleopatra who actually was Greek with no Egyptian blood but ruled Egypt as one of the best Pharohs, and she’s dating a Greek monster who heavily associated with Perseus who is the child of the king of the gods. If your looking at the Roman version of the myth then he’s also connected to the goddess of war and the god of the sea, and what is the Nile connected to? The Red Sea. So while I didn’t see any links to the Roman version of the myth thus most likely based on the og myth where the Gorgon sisters were born as monsters and thus no connection to Poseidon and Athena still, he’s connected to kings and in Greek myths, most monsters are the offspring of gods, meaning he’d he similarly veiwed as equal to Cleo as Egyptian royalty were seen an incarnation or descendants of their gods. But I’m a mythology nerd so 😅😅😅
What I think annoys me the most about the reboot is how the aesthetics don’t feel met anymore. I understand that the artstyle can’t be the same and all, but in the life action they managed to loose the “magic barbie” vibe and the animation makes them all way too,, round.
On top of that, their designs feel both cluttered and bland to me. There is the obvious in their clothing, it’s so much simpler. I feel like, especially with 3D models they could’ve used the more extravagant dresses well, maybe given suits or other cool combos for the characters without. It’s a real missed opportunity in my book, ans the faded rainbow they got slapped on just worsens it.
Of course I’m biased, with the previous gens being the ones I grew up with, but I feel like the new designs just pop a lot less. When i look at the designs, even without the standard (as far as that’s possible) it feels mushed.
TLDR; Do they have to look like a boring Pastell wash on ordinary clothes? What happened to being centuries old and individualistic?
their clothes dont even feature anything inspired by their original monsters anymore! Like, how cool was that Spectra used chains and metal balls, or how Frankie's wardrobe used patchwork and decorative seams??? Now they all wear vaguely the same vibe of fashion even though they could have even experimented with something more retro considering how varied everyones age is...
I'm more leaning on the negative side towards the new reboot. I feel like so many of the changes made in the movie were just made to appease Nickelodeon producers.. very specifically the Deuce and Clawdeen romance. It's just very weird that Frankie was made to be NB but they couldn't keep Clawdeen lesbian, like how the entire fandom agrees she is? On the topic of Frankie being NB, I can fully embrace it and love it, but I feel like the reboot could've done that better. Like, have them learn about the concept and bring the fact that they're a Frankenmonster into it (especially since they're meant to be 15 days old here). It's weird that they're fully fleshed out gender-wise but know little to nothing in any other social concept if that makes sense? I think something that wasn't discussed in the video was how Ghoulia wouldn't be non-verbal in the new movie, or at least she'd be speaking English. I don't think this is a change anyone could've expected, and it's just a bit upsetting as a ND person.
I can forgive and accept everything the reboot does if it weren't for. What they did. To HEATH. DO YOU SEE THIS MAN. THAT IS A HOT WHEELS TOY. GOD IT INFURIATES ME TO NO END ;; they did all this for the other designs but with heath... they didn't even do justice for the live action OR animation. he looks like a soggy barnacle that got set on cgi fire
As someone who deeply enjoys Heath as a character it just sort of breaks my heart. Idk if that's too dramatic but they just put absolutely no effort into him design-wise.
Yeah, clawdeen dating a guy and Heath in general are my two least favourite things about gen 3

saw the movie with a leak and they made ghoulia just… completely different. she’s definitely peppier(?) and is nothing close to the ghoulia in the og series which really sucks because now she’s so generic
I love your designs and as a Mexican I totally agree about the Lagoona g3 culture. She doesn't even look like part of Mexican culture and far less from the Rivera Maya, she looks like an European or American influencer. Even the cloths are clothes you would see any American person wearing. Cleo has always looked egiptian in each generation, og Lagoona did look and feel like Australian but g3 Cleo doesn't look Mayan at all. Sorry if I sounded rude but that's my opinion, there are a lot of Mayan designs and characters they could have chosen instead! Lagoona isn't a Mayan name at all tbh. However gorgeous designs, I really love how you made everyone more fashionable and less child like
I completely agree. And also (no offense to mexicans ofc) but why are all characters latinos from Mexico?? its kinda disappointing really. There are so meany countries that are latinos but no, it has to me Mexico. I remember how hyped I was to watch Encanto bc it was finally a movie abt Latino people that was in south American rather than north. And the fact that I didnt know laggona was Autralian (in my country they completely erased her accent) until this point made me really upset and confused to why they would change it, bc if it was for "representation" they did it so poorly, honestly.
Im just really tired of seeing all the characters that are supposed to be representative of America Latina being either extremely stereotypical or just looking american and having their culture forgoten

@@juli5945 yeah its really upseting bc I am latino (brazilian) and i can't recall one single character from an american show in my childhood that is brazilian. And if there was a character, they just looked or acted north american enough for it to be unnoticeable

They’re always just very vaguely Mexican too, it sucks like,,, Mexico is a big ass fucking country, we have a lot of different cultures, it’s so weird to see people treating us as if we have one homogenous culture.... it really shows that they don’t really wanna try :/. It’s always just “uuuuh ok we need a Latino character for our diversity checklist, ummm yah let’s make them Mexican. Where from? Well, they’re from Mexico lol”

Completely agree. Even tho I’m Mexican, I have tons of Latino friends from other countries, Mexico isn’t the only one lol. There’s El Salvador, Cuba, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and so many more.

I am someone with an extremely high tolerance for reboots. That being said, there are many things that I don’t particularly like about G3. My main gripe is that mh has always been a fashion doll line and the clothes on the characters are just…not it. I feel like some of the very distinct visual style that made mh so popular is no longer there. I wish they kept Lagoona’s curls :( when it comes to Deuce, I feel that he’s such a disaster bc mh hasn’t really pushed the envelope when it comes to mens fashion. I feel that it’s mostly an industry problem as most male dolls kinda feel lackluster. I hope they keep the fact that Deuce loves cooking and I hope they allow him to openly like it unlike in G1 where it was a secret.
I’m Australian and when I saw lagoona pop up I was like: please stay Aussie please stay Aussie please stay Aussie. I honestly feel like they could’ve just made a new character.
I wanna like the new Monster High, but part of me just doesn't feel ready to accept the new ghouls yet. From what I've seen so far from the live action movie trailer, it reminds me a lot of a disney channel made for tv movie, like Zombies or Halloween Town, which I do enjoy as they're not supposed to be taken too seriously. So my feelings are mostly mixed, especially since the movie is set to premiere on my birthday.
I’m still on the fence with Lagonna. It just doesn’t sit right with me as an Australian myself. There wasn’t a lot of recurring Australian characters in American or British media, Lagoona was the first for me. I understand it’s great to have more representation but the way it’s happening with Lagoona feels different. Monster high has a lot of representation but to replace one culture for another doesn’t seem like a good approach. I’m happy for the Latina community though! I just wish at the very lest they could of taken this opportunity to introduce an aboriginal or indigenous background into Lagoona. Sorry for the rant, I do love these redesigns and can’t wait to see more!
Hey there! As a mexican myself and Lagoona always being my favorite ghoul I agree with you. I can understand if they want the ghouls to date someone different to spice things up; people change partners, but nationalities?!? I don't see why they would want to force the latina label on Lagoona (besides absolutely wrecking her design in my opinion) when she was already Australian. As for Mexican representation we already have Skelita Calaveras and she's amazing???? She is based on Mexican Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) she has mexican folkore all over her design, she's perfect. They didn't need to strip Lagoona of her nationality, make her a generic mermaid barbie girl and forget she was ever Australian to try and tell us she's now from the Rivera Maya. That makes absolutely no sense, we already have Skelita Calaveras (México) Batsy Claro (Costa Rica) and Marisol Coxi (Perú) for Latin American representation.

I just wish instead of trying to make new characters under nostalgic names, that they’d really go for a new generation and try and make new ghouls. There’s so much opportunity but instead they’re trying to fix what isn’t broken…
somehow, although i hate what i’m seeing for the movie, this redesign made me feel less angry at the content and understand it a bit more.

frankie could have been such an amazing witch instead of draculara, considering her book smarts but instead they chose a vampire, the person who makes the least amount of sense

For real! They definitely leaned to a more Goth Lolita aesthetic for her instead of an alternative, (potentially) soft goth one.
Just starting with Frankie: Ah, I've mostly been outside Monster High fandom, but Mattel for Monster High and Ever After High made up a lot of my childhood. I didn't know what to make of the reboot, and I still don't, so I'll take as much opinions I can. Most of the opinions so far on the reboot have been leaning bad (at least from what I have seen). So far, this one is coming off as more objective. Apparently, G3 Frankie has better development than G1, so far. I'll comment again when I'm done.
Edit 1: After video. How much do we know of the personalities of the other characters? Lagoona Blue was vastly into the swim team in the original Monster High series. Also, great job. ^-^
Not a lot has been stablished aside the trope they are meant to represent. I know that in the new series for lagoona they are going with a "fish out of water" trope, that was also mention too in the interview with her dubber, but yeah I hope the show expands on their personalities like the original did

Lolita here! Yes, gothic lolita can have pink and I would call Draculaura's design gothic lolita. Also thank you so much for making her outfit a doable coord!
As an answer to your question, Draculaura's outfit could fit both Gothic Lolita and Lolita. Goth subculture is centered around the appreciation and fascination of the macabre. Bubble goth uses plenty of pink along with other pastel colors as a way to "make the creepy beautiful and make the beautiful creepy".
Thank you for explaining why Frankie is so different from what they used to be. Seeing that there was legal stuff going on to not get their butt kicked by WB, it's even more understandable. But I'm sure people still don't know about that fact.
(and then there's me, who didn't notice the color change at all because it's been ages since I've seen these movies and bluish isn't a bad color for a reanimated corpse)
I feel like they could've taken more inspiration from fish for Lagoona's pallet instead of just cute mermaid e-girl. I think if they wanted to revamp her but kept her being Australian they could've gone for more colors of the great barrier reef and the fish who live there. I loved her og design but I think they could've had much more fun. I loved the idea of the teal strands in her hair being from the chlorine in the pools, too. I agree that they could've made a new character or again at least use colors that represent where she's from. I could continue about the other ghouls but I'd be here all day haha I loved you ideas! I think the only changes I'd make would be making a more pronounced pattern on Duce's pants or boots to break it up a bit. There's way less snake skin but I think the boots could get away with having the pattern more as a motif then actual skin like how Clawdeen wore a lot of fuzzy faux fur. And I just love and miss goth Frankie haha the only thing for her would be boots or platform converse but that's my own personal taste. I don't know if that crosses the universal line as platforms are associated with Frankenstein to an extent but I think it'd give her a bit of edge. Even nerds can be edgy! haha
As a Gothic Lolita, Draculauras outfit is adorable and it's 100% okay to have different colors and cutesy accessories, it's something I do myself
i honestly really appreciate that this gen of frankie isn’t entirely flat chested/“androgynous” and they’re still openly nonbinary. it’s rare to see representation of nonbinary people in animation that looks realistic (not to say NO nonbinary people look like that, but it’s unfortunate that that’s the only rep they get yk?)
As an androgynous enby person, I got an ad for the movie and I was really thrown! It's so cool to see a really femme nonbinary character on screen, though it sucks it came at the cost of a retcon.
As a afab openly feme enby person it really made me happy to see a character who, not only is openly non-binary, but still quite feme, with a not flat chest long hair and skirts, cause when all you see in media is strictly androgynous enbies you can very easily start to feel like you don't fit in as non-binary or if you even are, so seeing something like that just felt really nice and validating
One aspect of Draculaura’s G3 design that I really liked was the vampire bangs.
With Lagoona’s whole design and personality changing, I think the reason she still has the same name is because of the marketing stuff mentioned at the beginning of the video. It’s basically like they slapped the name on a completely different character. She is cute though, and I love the redesigns🥰
The only issues I have with this new reboot so far is the fact that G1 and G2 Monster High was popular and well known for its “taboo” clothing at the time. Seeing them in more modernized and “normal” clothing is just a little disappointing because it doesn’t have that same effect. Another thing is that the reboots feel a little more stereotypical. I mean G1 and G2 MH was also pretty stereotypical as well, but I liked how the main ghouls where both a diva stereotype but also have other interests, ex.; Frankie being a diva and enjoying science instead of being one over used nerd stereotype. I also hate how they made Duce and Claudine date, she’s a confirmed lesbian and Cleo was already with Duce! But, I do like how they changed Frankie and Draculaura’s hairs, did add some NB representation. Also, the majority of the reboot’s designs aren’t even bad, they just don’t really work that well for a MH reboot. In conclusion, G1 and G2 MH will always hold a special place in my heart, making me kinda biased, I don’t think I’ll ever truly warm up to the new G3 versions of MH.
Clawdeen never was a lesbian, and neither confirmed lesbian. She definitely fit more in the aromantic spectrum. Not because a girl is the fierce one that she's a lesbian automaticaly. She being lesbian would just reinforce this steriotype. And she even dated a boy (I think the voodoo boy) in gen. 1.
They are adorable clothes, just not for MH

One thing I keep hearing people talk about is being upset about it's the fact that Ghoulia isn't non-verbal in G3, which I get because I am non-verbal when I get overwhelmed but Ghoulia is never depicted as non-verbal in canon. Ghoulia just doesn't speak English, she speaks zombie(which is a made up language but still). Ghoulia is seen talking to the other ghouls in zombie, its a plot point in ghoulias story that the other ghouls learn zombie for Ghoulia. While I understand seeing Ghoulia as non-verbal, she not, while she can understand when the ghouls speaking English she can't speak the language. I don't want to seem rude because I feel like there is never any rep for non-verbal people but it also feels rude to ignore Ghoulias rep as being a character that doesn't speak English (even if it is a made up language) because they never have Ghoulia speak English they had the other Ghouls learn Ghoulias language.
This was a really fun video and I actually share some of the opinions you have on the reboot. The redesigns were super pretty and your explanation for everything was very insightful too! New sub! ^^

I really love your character designs and I literally love that you mentioned the legal things and used them to your advantage, I agree Frankie is totally crowded and I love that all your redesigns included the ideas of the previous characters literally perfectly
I’ve been a fan of monster high ever since I was very little, and tbh your designs to me are better then the reboots, the incorporation of Deuss (can’t spell) being Greek so he had a darker skin tone is really good. I adore the idea of Frankie having a prosthetic and hope that actually gets into some form of official work. All the designs blend together well and the colored pallets are great
My main issues with the reboot was really just the personality changes and the race changes like when I saw that Draculara and clawdeen lost their accent in the movie I was so sad especially since they completely changed their personalities too. I really wish Nick and paramount just made new characters to appease to their wishes as these characters just aren't the same people anymore. What was most annoying was that their audience was meant to be the OG fans like if it was for the new generation then sure do whatever but the OG fans would obviously want to see the characters they know and love just with a new storyline and better resolution. All in all I just cant get behind G3

i love draculara's new body shape not only is she short but chubby too like me and it's just so nice to see some representation! but i like her outfit design with what you did. Also had no idea they also made her a witch along with being a vampire so now i just resonate with her even more
Honestly when a franchise tries to make pre-established characters their own, with various changes and contradictions to their originals, that's probably for the best, seeing as trying to make characters "true to their origins" always ends badly. Either because they still end up skewering their personalities (but this time under the impression that these are the same characters you've known and loved for ages) or, they don't give a shit about originality and follow a formula and end up not putting out anything new or interesting because they're choosing to recycle the old brand and ride its successes.

id love to see part 2. i like the dress you gave draculara. (i think i personly would have made the dress pink, and included pigtails in her design but keep the split die so its a mix of G1 and G3) i think you did a good job at restyling the reboot characters.
Hey, thanks for giving them all a solid style. Aside from personal gripes (give me back a Jekyll/Hyde kid), that's currently the only thing that's bothering me. They just... don't look good currently. Maybe it will grow on me? Who knows.

Clawdeen never was a lesbian. She definitely fit more in the aromantic spectrum. Not because a girl is the fierce one that she's a lesbian automaticaly. She being lesbian would just reinforce this steriotype. And she even dated a boy (I think the voodoo boy) in gen. 1.

One of the guys working on the original Monster High was a gay man and tried to make as many LGBTQIA+ characters as he could but he couldn't make it directly because everyone else that he worked with said that the public wasn't "ready for it" yet. That's what happened with Clawdeen, he tried talking his coworkers into making her canonically lesbian but they said the public wasn't ready. So, yes, aromantic does also fit her character but that doesn't get rid of the fact she was meant to be a lesbian but Mattel wouldn't accept it. She may not have made it to canon for this but I still headcanon her regardless because that's what she was meant to be and I would like to respect that man's ideas because he was silenced so many times. If you're lesbian or wlw and don't agree I'd love to hear your voice in the matter.

The creator openly has stated hes always wanted her to be boy crazy, but just more self sustainable than frankie and draculaura are. He just finds the headcanons of clawdeen being lesbian cool because it shows that he was still able to hold a place in the lgbt community even though he wasnt able to actively make any characters lgbt.

i like ur design for deuce so much!! hes always been one of my favorites because hes like. an atually nice punk and jock character in a cartoon; he was one of the first people to try to get to know jackson! so it just made me sad when i saw that they turned him into another jughead lookalike
ALSO i LOVE ur lagoona as well!!!! she was legit my favorite as a kid, i loved the episode where she freed the frogs in the disection lab. the new lagoona just. didnt give off that vibe to me, but putting the old and new together is a nice middle ground to enjoy
I sorta don’t mind Draculaura’s sun hat/witches hat, specially if she half witch now? Or does witchy magic. I always like the cuties witchy aesthetic but also because she a vampire, it make sense she would wear wide brim hats to protect her face as it’s the part of her body with the most exposed skin.

I like Clawdeen and Frankie's new designs, they should have had Dracilaura stay somewhat the same but the witch-vampire aesthetic is kinda cool, but WHAT DID THEY DO TO LAGOONA? Why did they make her pink? Also, they changed her nationality. I'm not Australian, but I loved how she seems Aussie. For heck's sake, there was a whole movie called Great Scarrier Reef, and where is the Great Barrier Reef? Oh yeah, off the coast of Australia.
I have a large collection of Monster High dolls, and I love the ones before these reboots more. Though, if I was forced to pick a favorite reboot design it would be Clawdeen (I hate how she was confirmed a lesbian and then they had her date Deuce, but they could honestly make them just friends and I'd love that). They played more into the feral part of Americanized werewolves and I LOVE IT. Now, if they pulled in the shapeshifting (a main part in the last movie that wasn't live action I've heard of) I'd love it even more. Suddenly going from anthro wolf girl to a giant wolf in the hallways because she's late for a class could be a cool concept in the animated series.
I like that they are now adding a non-binary main chatacter, and I think the idea of Frankie having a prosthetic leg is genius, seeing as it includes another group of people, and just makes sense for a frankenstein monster chatacter

I actually quite like the animation style, the designs not too much, but i love monster high a lot so i will be eating up all this new food. one thing that makes me sad is how the broke up cleo and deuce, that feels so sacrilegious! not only because cleo and deuce are a power couple, but because clawdeen was confirmed a lesbian, at least G1 clawdeen. i hope they make a storyline about clawdeen coming to terms with her orientation and breaking up in good terms with deuce.... and he hooks up with our goddess cleo of course!
and oh boy did you take the words out of my mouth with lagoona. i love lagoona and i'm latina, but there is nothing mexican about her and you could say she is north american and nothing would feel out of place! there is so many rich folktales about water beings and the ocean but they had of course go for the greek one... they should've kept her aussie at least, we do not have any aussies besides her... it makes me angry they took the latina route without spending any actual time investigating about latino folktales, like woo hoo take ur inclusivity points i guess

@@violxtfaerie nymphs are greek beings and she is the daughter of a water nymph. with the sea monster part, they could easily specify which one, because in aztec culture there is a monster called ahuizotl that lures people to their death, but saying just sea monster gives little information and for all we know it could be a token sea monster that we always see in media. she doesnt even wear anything of her cultural background so if we said she was american it wont change a thing, think about Skelita Calaveras, she mixed cultural elements in her outfit to stand out and avoid being seen as just a skeleton monster. i never said greek myth was basic, im sorry if it sounded that way. what i was referring to is that greek myths are EVERYWHERE in mainstream media and i personally am tired of seeing it, i would love if they designed and wrote about other cultures. monster highs creator instagram admitted they never thought about it but said it was a great idea and gave fans approval of the headcanon and saying they tried to hint it in her diaries because of censorship, if the creator himself gives a greenlight the headcanon becomes more or less canon, dont you think? garrett himself said he loves the idea of her being a lesbian, so going against the creator wishes by pairing her with a man is really icky especially when there is almost no queer rep

-i feel like i could’ve worded it better so i’ll elaborate. i think the issue isn’t that Greek myths is used a lot itself but more that it’s often used just for the sake of it and it isn’t taken deeper/has new ideas added/interpreted differently etc. for example G1 lagoona (also G3 assuming she has a similar background) is part nereid (oceanid technically) but tbh it feels like an afterthought as this part of her i don’t think was ever elaborated on, i wouldn’t blame someone for forgetting about it
-i tried to find the monster lagoona’s sea monster half could be (in G1 it could change in G3) based off her name. i couldn’t find a sea monster at all in the book/movie the blue lagoon. the closest thing was the monster in the black lagoon movie but heavily doubt lol
-I’ve found the description of G3 lagoona for the series my memory worked lol “having grown up in an ancient underwater Mayan Castillo with her ocean nymph mother and sea monster father, sweet yet ferocious Lagoona doesn’t know much about life on land.” it seems like that her background is more or less the same as G1 only her home is different and they still didn’t specify the sea monster, though there’s a chance it could be revealed later which i hope happens

I think they changed Lagoona’s skin tone because they wanted her to look more tropical since she is from the ocean after all. Idk why they went with pink specifically. I would have given her stripes to convey that. I think the gradient from pink to blue on her fins is really pretty though

This video made me a *little* more optimistic about the reboot. I love your redesigns and the concepts of some of the characters from G3 don't sound too bad. Like, I love the idea of Frankie being non-binary. Both them and Deuce needed so much more added to their characters. I feel like Frankie really suffered this thing protagonists often have where they have next to no personality or it's constantly dropped for plot reasons. The problem I have with the reboot is how I think they're sort of going that route with Cleo, Clawdeen and Deuce specifically now. They're kind of leaning into trends with Cleo being the typical mean girl who's mad that Clawdeen, the new girl, steals her boyfriend. Clawdeen gets turned into a nerdy new girl who doesn't fit in and Deuce, instead of getting more added to his character, becomes probably a misunderstood bad boy whose only trait is that he's the protagonist's love interest. The glasses being see-through just makes him sound dramatic about his whole "not fitting in" thing. I wear glasses and I'm doing just fine, Deuce.
Which is basically worse than what they did with him in the show. Can't believe they took the character who had nearly nothing to him and they took what was left. Point is, it feels like they're leaning into current trends and popular tropes to play it safe instead of sticking to the wackiness that was Monster High's original selling point.

I love these redesigns!! You did an amazing job! As for my opinion on the reboot, I’m in different about it. I think Frankie and Draculaura look cute in the new series and I love how they made Deuce look more like a Gorgon but I have some issues with Lagoona. I think her design is cute and I like how they’re adding more diversity in the main cast but honestly I think they should’ve just made her a new character and made the original Lagoona an Indigenous Australian. I’m from Australia myself and I’m not Indigenous but there is a huge lack of representation for Indigenous Australians, this could’ve been a huge step in having them represented, especially in such a huge media.
Again, I do think the new design is cute and I love the fact they’re adding more representation but I feel like they just missed the mark with not making new Lagoona a new character, she could’ve been old Lagoona’s cousin or something, and kept old Lagoona Australian but adding in that representation that is missing for our Indigenous Australians

I was a little on the fence when I first heard about a reboot but it’s not nearly as bad as I thought it was gonna be.
Frankie was my favourite character in the original and I’m really happy that they made them nonbinary. I’m trans myself and it feels good to have a character to resonate with! There are a lot of people against them being nonbinary saying that they are doing it to please the people or that they should have made a new character to make nonbinary but in my opinion that isn’t the case. Making them nonbinary could actually make people not want to watch it or there kids not watch it. I think it was a good move.
Anyways the video was amazing! Can’t wait for part 2!
As someone who also grew up with MLP and likes the newest reboot of Strawberry Shortcake, thank you for acknowledging that reboots will evolve everyone. A good reboot is comfortable with developing designs. That's cool.

I'm personally not totally against the reboot designs and I love that you pointed out why they had to change up Frankie and how even though these characters have the same names, they should be considered different ghouls! I do think the new Lagoona is my favorite (I'm a sucker for pink characters) and I love the theory that the doll will change color in the water! But I do agree with you that her design should have had more inspiration from Mexican/Mayan folklore

As someone who loved mh as a kid and went into the movie trailer blind, I can say with confidence, after you explained the copyright issues, my opinion of Gen 3 Frankie did a 180. The changes they made now make sense opposed to seaming random and out of place. So tysm for that. Also I think you did great with the redesigns. And as a fan of the og ghouls n' guys, I find the mostly gen 1 inspo quite nice! ❤️❤️❤️

I love this redesigns! I actually like G3, yeah, it is different from G1 but that kinda the point, it's not G1. And your the first one that I see actually redesigning G3 instead of just drawing G1 with small differences and call it G3 redesign. I also love you mentioned the copyrights, Ive been getting so annoyed at people complaining at copyright changes, like I would have made the changes too if I had the risk of dealing with a lawsuit, and I know it probably is because people don't know, but still kinda annoys me. Anyway, can't wait to see more.

I went into a rant about the Gen3 designs and all the other generations' designs a couple months ago so here are some highlights of my thoughts on Gen3's main cast:
Frankie.
Tbh despite of how cluttered Frakie was they were my favorite remasterization of the character out of all the other characters and generations. They look so stupid in a good way, I love my enbie representation (they just like me fr). I don't really have much strong thoughts about it I just think the pink is too flashy and awkward on them, I love the idea of them having a half-shave like it just makes sense for a Frankenstein themed outfit but I actually didn't like the blue- I get your point that it can call attention to their face but since they are already blue it just seems like it's just dragging the view down to their jacket which has the most contrasting colors. But you make a good point with that the jacket is covering their body a little too much, it makes sense to let their stitches breathe a little since part of the appeal of a frankestein monster is that they have stitches and are made of other people's bodyparts.
As for the cluttered point. While they could've done it in a more smart way I think it makes sense to me that Frankie keeps pasting stuff on themselves in a way to appeal to society and constantly trying and experimenting with lots of new things and stuff and places to be in and learn new stuff. Also for the uni bomber, I'm making my point and say that they got it because they think it's socially acceptable (to put it in a way) to support your school in being super patriotic and buying the merch or participating on all the clubs and what-not. Idk just my headcanon
Draculaura.
I also don't really have strong opinions on her. She has too much pink, that is true, its like the company just thinks that her whole appeal was the pink and in a way it was but they just keep painting everything in her pink to the point where she just looks like a big blob. Also her clothes are really awkwardly layered(? Like I like her having a shirt under a tank top or dress is okay but then the open skirt over the pants is a little bit much and looks too sectionated, I feel like the patterns and the color palettes don't make it much better, like she already has too much pink so they could've used the patterns to have some sort of depth but the bats are too thin and too far appart so her skirt just looks like a blob (which is propbably why you didn't liked it) and the polka dots are the same but in white and white is not a good color to have some depth with when the colors you're using are light already, at most they give her some dinamicy, the top on its own is actually ok but with the bottom it kinda confuses me a little.
Her hat is cool tho.
Also off the topic of the design itself but most of the fandom didn't like how they got rid of her pig-tails and gave her a half and half dye and this is genuinely just bitching. Because most (if not ALL) of the designs I've seen of fanartists had her in that excact same hairstyle and when Hasbro does it is now bad????? Like stfu you did the same thing.
Tbh I love that everyone gives her that hairstyle because its a good modernization of the character. Like back in the 2000s highlighs were trending so she (and all the other characters) had them and more recently (or at leats some years ago) that half and half dyes were also trending with the Melanie Martinez rave so now she has them.

Hot take but Cleo was always dissappointing to me since I was a kid with Gen1. It doesn't enrage me but she was supposed to be the queen bee who's super materialistic and has lots of money and seeing her whole outfit in her base forms compared to the other characters, she is boring.
Tbh I feel like Hasbro is trying to make up for her and since Gen2 they've been giving her more interesting jewelry and Gen3 gave her more interesting make-up which I really appreciate because they have always missed on that really iconic eyeliner thingy. HOWEVER she has too much blue on her, much like Draculaura, Hasbro seems to have figured out that Cleo needs to get her blue chroma boosted to 200% to have something they could contrast her gold with, and it could've worked it they didn't chose such an eyesoring saturated squeaky turquoise and also used other blue tones to balance it out. Another problem Hasbro has with her designs since Gen2 is that they keep using these tribal patterns on her that just look bland and uninsteresting on themselves and don't do any layering to let them have some sort of use, and they keep using them so much that it is gettin oversaturated much like Draculaura's pink problem.
I also didn't like how they got rid of her bangs. Like the bangs were a good nod of egiptian wigs and that side-bang is soooo boring and bland and overused and flat and so not on trend, like didn't GenZ had a whole battle with the millenials about how those bangs were ugly??? Like these dolls are meant for the generation after them, how do you think they would feel?
The belts are an off fit for her(? Like for this we'll have to watch the webseries but for now I just feel like those type of belts are more fitted to a more practical and hardworking oriented character and Cleo (as we know her) is just not like that, like she has all those hot Anubi-servants to do everything for her so it doesn't make sense that she would put on something so heavy tailored, BUT they are a really good nod to her bandages actually. I also really hope that they're not putting her in some jeans/leggings because those with the side-bang are gonna be the most uninteresting silhouette. That battle with the millenials also involved skinny jeans so good luck with that ig.
Why does she glow like that though??? I get that maybe they did that golden filter on her because she looked too human in her revious versions, but the animation of that glow is so ugly
Lagoona.
Lagoona is the *second* most salvaged one out of the bunch. I really like the pallette they used for her hair and how they gave her that crown-thing in black was the most smart thing they've done in this Generation because it's a really good neutral color that contrasts so well with the palette and the character, the pearls are the same but since they're white and they're in a very light palette I'm glad they kept them small and in a neat amount so the colors don't look to flat and they're really cute, and the pink skin was a really daring change but I actually don't hate it she looks adorable, I think the pink skin is better since Frankie is already blue and having Lagoona still be blue would confuse a lot of kids. The only thing I'd take away is the hoodie, nothing wrong with it it's just that the colors are a little tiny bit too saturated with the rest of the character, so either tone them down or make it a solid color or a two-colored gradient since the blue/pink/yellow pattern can easily get boring.

As much as I genunely like pink Lagoona. She looks more like a mermaid than a sea monster, and that is concerning since she's still sold as a sea monster but she looks too visually appealling and colorful for worldbuilding standards to not be a cute little coral mermaid.
Clawdeen.
I hate Gen 3 Clawdeen so much. i would brutally bully her so hard like she is such a stereotype of a nerd and she looks like she is an even more annoying, naive and doormat-ey version of Gen 1 Frankie (and I DEFEND gen 1 Frankie, leave my clumsy girl-next-door protagonist little naive girl alone, this is a pro-Gen1 Frankie account). I just want to bust those dumb glasses on that dumb half-bun of her and put her in a locker during break.
But.
As much as I really hate this new Clawdeen, she has the best design out of all the reboot. It is a really good and solid design that works really well with the character and the style of the reboot and it looks the most genuinely alternative out of all the bunch in a hippie TikTok witch kind of way which is really refreshing since we completely lost that and don't seem to getting it back (I'm not counting Toralei because she looks like what shein is selling us so I don't really think she looks punk or anything else because she feels so bland and unflavored to be alt).
The overalls look surprisingly good despite covering the mayority of her and having a squeacky purple because they have an actual good black pattern that can balance out the saturation while giving them more debth (excatly what they could've done with Draculaura and Cleo), the black T works really well as a neutral and to not mix up the overalls with the purple dye of her hair, the necklace is a cool contrast and I think we can all appreciate that it's a crescent moon, and the glasses actually do a good work with balancing out the look on her face and drawing the focus to it since she's not using any jewelry or detail on her head. I love how they're giving her more animalistic looks like kinkier hair, thicker brows, some hair texture and a dog nose, it's one of the few things these last reboots had done better than Gen 1 (since it was canon that Clawdeen shaved a lot and was really insecure about her body hair which was really crappy considering what the doll-line is supposed to be). I think the only thing that holds her back a little is her light hair, it really baffled a lot of people me included, I don't know how it's supposed to work since dark hair can do just fine, but I think she would look uninteresting alongside the rest of the cast so I think they gave her that lighter tone to kind of let Clawdeen pop more and left the purple dye to add some interesting contrast, it confused some people but it's really not bad actually.
Seeing a feminine presentingnon-binary person is so comforting, I use they/them pronouns and use he/him pronouns occasionally and it’s so refreshing seeing a feminine presenting non-binary person being respected. :]

personally i don’t think the reboot is all that bad except the part where they made clawdeen seem kind of boy crazy over duece, completely changing lagoonas design, and taking away dracularas accent. i also saw somewhere that they apparently darken cleo/cleo’s actor but i’m not quite sure.
If lagoona turns blue when she's in the water i need to see that
