The 454 is a great engine, and if rebuilt, it I think it would serve you well. I own a C3500HD with an 8.1 and a C3500 with a 454. These are great trucks to own and can serve their owners well. Congratulations on buying a beautiful roll back.
They are poop. I owned one. 6.5 turbo diesel was horrific. Worst in the 6.0 Ford transmission the rear end. I had a 1999. The early ones were bending frames. That's why you see the big reinforcement in there I think they started in 97 or 98.
6.5 was a dog. We had one 6.5, and it was in the boss's wrecker. His truck was actually built for a NASCAR track and still had the fancy paint job. The diesel had "work done" so you had to watch the EGT's and not many people were allowed to drive it. I was one of the lucky ones to take it out occasionally and I can absolutely testify that a good running, well maintained low mileage 6.5 with "work done" is an absolute dog when compared to my well abused 275,000 mile 8.1.
The 3500HD was built as an answer for the towing industry that attempted to overcome the problem in the 1 ton chassis. Larger brakes and wheels etc. The original design had a fiberglass front hood and fenders but was cut out by Gm penny pinching.
I was surprised to see the stuck valve, other than that it looks like it's going to be a great truck. Having to wait to hear it run is going to kill me 😉👍✌️🇺🇲

@@rsprockets7846 I've done it both ways and it depends on a whole lot of things. Hey Mortske! Hopefully, you havent put this thing back together yet... I just wanted to let you know to at least pressure test those injectors to make sure they arent leaking. It seems to be kind of a high failure rate on the 454 Vortec rigs and i feel like that may be the reason for the extended crank and need to open the throttle to get her to light off. Ideally you would want to have them bench tested after the extended ethanol bath. But if you can pressure test the rail, make sure it holds pressure after you turn the pump off and there isn't any fuel dripping out of the injector tips, it may save you from having to pull the plenum twice ;)

Cruizing through several of your videos while I’m down after double fusion spinal surgery last Monday. Between you, my feller Okie Puddin, PoleBarn, Derek, CW’s Garage, Ugly Truck Experience, and a few select other. Y’all are keeping me sane from the pain. So for that in itself, I appreciate you, Duff, and Mojo. Keep up the great work, plan to order up some merch soon! My cousin is about to whiskey-dent his 05 3/4 8.1 the rest of the way into the ground. Drivetrain all solid and strong. Not ridiculous miles. I’ll reach out if it becomes available. I had eyed it for one of my 3 K5s but I think I’m gonna 5.3 the sentimental ‘88 (mom has ‘04 burb with 140k and is ready for something different); Cummins the nicely redone M1009: and keep the roughest old school one (‘79) the carbed 350. Good alternative for those tubs are restaurant table bussing tubs from restaurant supply store(can find used sometimes). Also look for stainless buffet pans while you’re at it. Hella Handy for around the shop. The real big ones will nearly fully self contain most trans pan drops. Sam’s club (Oklahoma/Arkansas’ answer to Costco) has bus bin packs for decent price. I buy their cheap acrylic cutting boards for leather work. Or deck-le cutouts etc. Super cheap alternative to the bins you showed are just “dishwashing bins” from Walmart near the dishracks. Even cheaper at the Dollar Gentral or Dollar Tree-Fiddy. Idk up y’all about north but here in Oklahoma they’re popping up Dollar Gentrals in every little one horse town. It’s dang near dirtwork to check your own self out in just a couple months. Pure crazy. Walmart ran the little man down and out and, now DG and Family Dollar/Dollar Tree Fiddy is coming in where everything dried up. Business is weird. I’m rambling now lol. Good meds. I can smell all the colors of the moon. But I always like finding handy things for around the shop and sharing to others. Y’all be well! -Lance

The passenger door was the type of door for the commercial built Chevy 3500 HD ton and a quarter truck... The driver door was prob smashed in on an a car wreck and trashed the door striker too... So they just placed a regular cab door on it and booger welded the striker bolt back on the cab
When you were having trouble with the tool on making the quick connect i believe that old fuel is 3/8 and the correct line to be flared ie the new stuff is 9mm and thats why it refused to work easily
Buying a project is always fun. It doesn't look too bad shape for the year. I just picked up a 02 f250 ex cab V10 4x4 auto for 500. Runs and drives the only thing that doesn't work is the AC. It needs brake lines, a fuel line, tires, muffler battery and new manifold gaskets. It's rusty the bed is shot but for 500 couldn't pass it up especially it being a 3/4 ton. I do wish it was the 7.3 but oh well.

They did put an 8.1L in that body style. The 01-02 3500HD was still the OBS body style and came with either the 8.1L or the 6.5L. I see them on proxibid ocassionally. The vortec 454 is a pretty solid engine though, fix that head and it will likely run for a long time.
Good to know!
Why can’t anything just be easy right? But at least you figured out what the problem was and once it’s fixed, I think you’re really going to enjoy having this rig around. Thank you Mr Mortske, I too know very little about the vortex engine and look forward to seeing you get this rig back doing roll back things.
Hope "the" problem is the only problem. I am not so sure. Especially when we hear those dreaded words: "somebody's already been in here."
I wouldn’t worry about multiple episodes. I like having something to look forward to. Thanks for sharing!
Its "Pump up the jam" by Technotronic
My vortec has almost 90,000 miles with a rebuilt 4l80e. It runs my 16,000 lb motorhome all over. Can't wait to see next video.
Good to know
I'm 56, and I've seen some stuff. Poor Duff on a leash ! Has he recovered ? Keep up the great work !
He will get over it.
I wish I had your dedication to work on these hunks. Been doing a full tune up (with complete fuel system refresh) 30 minutes at a time for the past month on my 454 97 K3500
I've been BINGE watching you memorial day weekend...always good stuff!😊
-Lance
Get well soon!
Sweet thanks Mr mortske always been my dream to own one of these
You should make a new tshirt that says; Five most important “Mortzke Tech Tips of the Day!” I’d buy it! 😂😂😂
note taken!
I'm sure the poor PO went broke answering AAA calls. That is a good platform and makes life easy once its back in service. "Duffs" Towing and Recovery? Thanks for making my Monday!
Great find I look forward to more on this project
Mr. Hardman has a great last name! Thanks for the video and happy Memorial Day!
With 15 minutes left in the video you said let's pull the head. Lol gotta love time lapse. That's gonna be a really handy truck to have around.
A collaboration with you and Dalton will be excellent! You both have that IDGAF attitude! Looking forward to it!
Haha, maybe someday!
For the Mortske towing service and repair. Run by Duff , and you I will watch ⌚ three or four episodes. Thanks for sharing this with me and my family and friends at the Auto shop.
He will help tow Puddins rustic cars....😂😂😂😂😂
@@ericsebina256 as long as he loves what he does it is not work and if they eat and the light's 🕯️ are on all that matters.
Has to have map sensor to run right, mine always need them. Have a samich....lol
The passenger door was the type of door for the commercial built Chevy 3500 HD ton and a quarter truck... The driver door was prob smashed in on an a car wreck and trashed the door striker too... So they just placed a regular cab door on it and booger welded the striker bolt back on the cab
I concur
That sure will be a handy piece of equipment for you.
Keep a pump for a 96 tahoe kicking around. They will go right into a lower pressure gm tbi sending unit too
When you were having trouble with the tool on making the quick connect i believe that old fuel is 3/8 and the correct line to be flared ie the new stuff is 9mm and thats why it refused to work easily
Lookie lookie, is that a rollback I see??? Can’t wait! Glad you found one Mortske🌺
I purchased a panel carrier for drywall. I fell it worth the trip for construction projects as a lone wolf senior citizen .
Looking forward to trying it when removing a hood, thanks for the idea
Good stuff!
Multiple videos are fine with me! I love to watch the progress. Another great video!
