WORST Purchase of My Life?!? I Bought a Rollback Tow Truck for Dirt Cheap! How Bad Can It Be???

- A subscriber heard me say I was looking to purchase a rollback tow truck in one of my videos and had purchased this 1998 Chevrolet C1500 Heavy Duty from a local to him towing company with plans to swap the bed to another chassis. After sitting for about 10 years he realized his project wasn't going to be completed so he offered the truck to me. Lets see if we can get the Vortec fuel injected big block to come back to life so we can haul more old junk home! This one is not for sale at this time. As always, thanks for watching!

Do more work unless talkin
Well, we found our winner on Memorial Day! Have at 'em kids!
How about you go do some work yourself and get off the youtubes big man
Bro doesn’t even know how to spell 😂😂 “and less” not unless 😂
More watching unless comments. 😆🤣😂
@@MortskeRepair 😂 kinda makes sense really. Work “unless” you’re “talkin”. 😂
If you would have just touched the spark plug while you were testing for spark, you would have prevented the other problem. Always shock yourself when testing for spark. It prevents further damage and makes for great viewer entertainment. :)
Lol!
Fleas fall right off too!
I do it when no one's lookin!
Power windows, cloth seat, aluminum bed. That trucks a score!
Interesting options that's for sure!
An a rubber floormat to make it easy to clean
Never time to fix it right, but there is always time to fix it again.
Nothin’ like getting grandpa’s fart’s back! 💩 You find the coolest stuff!
I was surprised to see the stuck valve, other than that it looks like it's going to be a great truck. Having to wait to hear it run is going to kill me 😉👍✌️🇺🇲
That will be a great truck once finished…
Used to drive one of those, the boss always reminded us to roll it back far enough, so it comes away from the lock. It will tear stuff up. Great episode Mortske…
Carry-on
With a rollback and a wrecker, you are going to have so many more friends. That is a good old truck and I'm sure you will use it a ton. Looking forward to the Part 2.
Tell me about it
The bed was bent from a blowout, you can see where the cap was hitting when it blew.
good call!
I got the same thing but with a dump box. It's been a good work horse
awesome!
L29 454 is an awesome 454. Best GM ever made. SEFI and a roller cam.
The C3500HD is an impressive truck once you get by that body lift piece in the front. They are built to be strong and somewhat simple. The 454 is a great engine, and if rebuilt, it I think it would serve you well. I own a C3500HD with an 8.1 and a C3500 with a 454. These are great trucks to own and can serve their owners well. Congratulations on buying a beautiful roll back.
They are poop. I owned one. 6.5 turbo diesel was horrific. Worst in the 6.0 Ford transmission the rear end. I had a 1999. The early ones were bending frames. That's why you see the big reinforcement in there I think they started in 97 or 98.
Gm junk
6.5 was a dog. We had one 6.5, and it was in the boss's wrecker. His truck was actually built for a NASCAR track and still had the fancy paint job. The diesel had "work done" so you had to watch the EGT's and not many people were allowed to drive it. I was one of the lucky ones to take it out occasionally and I can absolutely testify that a good running, well maintained low mileage 6.5 with "work done" is an absolute dog when compared to my well abused 275,000 mile 8.1.
The 3500HD was built as an answer for the towing industry that attempted to overcome the problem in the 1 ton chassis. Larger brakes and wheels etc. The original design had a fiberglass front hood and fenders but was cut out by Gm penny pinching.
Might be good to give it a complete valve job. If you plan on keeping it. That's a lot of rough miles on it. Bound to be more valves nearing the end of their lives and you're already elbow-deep in to it.
NAW PUT THE MONEY INTO A LO MILAGE MOTOR
@@rsprockets7846 I've done it both ways and it depends on a whole lot of things. Like for example it was cheaper to put a low mileage V8 in a square body over replacing that integrated exhaust manifold/intake manifold on the straight six that was in it. They wanted just as much for the replacement part. But then we had to get all the hook-up right like the throttle cable, speedometer cable, motor mounts - things like that.
@@W1se0ldg33zer Yeah gotttta weigh the options but with new roll backs cracking 50k I see the economics of the motor swap or a wreck core rebuild,, ,anyway pure YT content gold for him .............

Love your channels I watch everything you post. 👍👍💪👌

Mortske, coffee and sunshine this morning today is starting out good
glad to hear it!
You are one heck of a hard worker. My Hat is off to you for hanging in there doing some awful hard work that I would give up on. I would be a person easy to give up on a bad purchase..

Thank you for the long video on Memorial Day. Perfect way to start the week.
Our pleasure!
Top kick door handles. The truck is a 3500HD. 11/4 ton.
good to know
More of this rollback please.
I seriously dont get how you dont have more followers. Nothing like watching/listening to your videos while working on my truck
Thanks for the kind words
Man the old Gray air jack brings back memories of working at the Tire Shop back in the 70s , not many cars you can use that on the bumpers of today , good thing most the stuff you do are older !!
Exactly
Something about seeing a work truck from my childhood era gets me right in the getting spot.
The wheels on that rig would be enough to make me finish a project.
Although I love this rollback, it is so much better watching you spend your money to fix it. Looking forward to part 2.
Put a ls or the 8100 in it unfortunately the vortec 454 is gutless and consumes way too much fuel for 180hp if you’re lucky
Thanks buddy. I saw the truck on the second channel and was looking forward to the story. 👍🏼💯
I love them old air jacks. I made a riding mower lift out of one :)
sweet
Another Duff Dog production! Great video
Great job. Enjoyable , entertaining and educational. Every time I watch you, Pudding and Junkyard Digs and Mook, I get the urge to get and older truck and revive, repair and rejuvenate it. Thank you for your part on the inspirational urge.
Thanks 👍
Dukes of Hazzard light bar. Aerodynic by Federal Signal. Just change the globes. Very collectable piece.
Definitely new territory here. That said, you seem to have it pretty much figured out. I'm pretty glad that you were able to determine that you could save the big block as opposed to a swap - heavy labor but relatively cheap parts. Looking forward to Part Deux, especially the fuel pump gut swap. Excellent fleet addition - great for snatching those regional finds. Cheers!
🗿👍
I look forward to seeing the next installment of this truck. Why not get the heads done while you got it apart? it appears to be pretty clean inside.
I have one of these motors as a short block and am trying to get the rest of the parts to get one of these running. Keep up the good work, love the channel.
The saddle on the panel carrier faces out, so the height is able to exceed the distance between your armpit and the bottom of the panel.
Hope you and Duff are having a great day this Memorial Day!
same to you Kimberly!
Totally enjoying this video. Really enjoying you wrenching on that engine and getting it to function properly. Love that roll back. It will benefit you tremendously in the long run. Is worth the save. Thank you for sharing this one can hardly wait till the next
Never thought i'd see the day, not the rollback but Duff on a leash!! Hope you check on the other head, anyway this truck is much needed, would be great with a cab swap! Thanks Mortske for the video!
You should make a new tshirt that says; Five most important “Mortzke Tech Tips of the Day!” I’d buy it! 😂😂😂
note taken!
I laughed out loud at push it into the corner and let it rot. Just kiddin’. You didn’t even do that to the Concord lol
The driver side has the wrong door handle should be like the passenger door..
I knew all of the Chevrolet roll backs I ever drove of that era had handles like the passenger side.
Yeah it looks like the driver door was replaced it doesn't have the pin stripe on it and few other little clues.
That’s not true.
The handle on the passenger side is a Topkick/ Kodiak hande.
The proper handle is the one on the drivers side.
And not only that, you’re not going to find those rods for the Topkick handle. And you’ll be lucky to find a Topkick handle
@@tclott316
I have plenty of those handles and the rods mr.know it all...😎👊🏻
@@tclott316 ALL C3500hd trucks (gmt455 I believe) came with topkick style handles.
The rubber cement may have belonged to Frank Hardman at the Harley Dealership.
Like the new roll back 👍🏻 and maybe u can do some haggling with puddin his ole “some-day” model A needs a seat .. thanx for the video
L29 Vortec 454. 290 hp 410 ft/lb. Top engine for the year, had more balls than the diesel. 4L80E trans. I own one, a 98 2500 with 60,000 original miles on it. No rust. Great trucks. 👍
good to know!
You are going to love having a Rollback. A friend of mine has one on a big Freightliner that he has pretty much worn out over the last 25 years. Used it for everything. While you have it torn down, you might as well do it right and fix everything you find wrong or you will be redoing a bunch of work. Amazing that it isn't rougher than it is with that many miles on it. Hope the stinger doesn't have to much wrong with it because they are very handy. Probably won't be using the wrecker as much once you get used to running this.
You will use the health out of that rollback. The dash looks amazing for the age and mileage.
dang mortske youve done it again. a keeper 4 sure. and try to calm duff down, the dogs bouncing off the walls.
I believe this is the first time I’ve seen a rollback on a trailer
me too!
Glad to see you got that rollback. I think it will be a lot easier way to pick up more vehicles. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice Memorial Day and stay safe.

My guess would be it was stuck on that valve and you kept cranking it then the valve hit and bent. Then the push rod fell out of the rocker. Tuff break. That sucks! I'm excited to see the repair though!! It's a nice rig!!
Yup
I always thought them looked weird having the grill so high and bumper so low on them trucks in the front. I wish I kept my 96 3500 hd dully, Thing would pull a house down, but man the 454 and a dayna 80, and the smallest fuel tank in the world, I ended up selling it. It was sure better than my 99 GMC Suburban with its clasped lifter and noisy rear end lol.
That's why Duff is the best thing going for you all. Got to love a great intelligent pup that does everything and them some.
The only difference between the vortec and the older Chevy engines is the vortec has a 60° angle instead of 45° which makes for a more narrow intake.
Huge fan of these trucks. I’ve got one in the 135” wheel base and has the proper Dana 70 front Monroe 4x4 conversion. I can speak from experience these things will hold their own and then some. Mine (6.5, 5 speed) gets 16 mpg empty at 9,000 lbs, has grossed 23,000 at times
Cool!
Hey Mortske! Hopefully, you havent put this thing back together yet... I just wanted to let you know to at least pressure test those injectors to make sure they arent leaking. It seems to be kind of a high failure rate on the 454 Vortec rigs and i feel like that may be the reason for the extended crank and need to open the throttle to get her to light off. Ideally you would want to have them bench tested after the extended ethanol bath. But if you can pressure test the rail, make sure it holds pressure after you turn the pump off and there isn't any fuel dripping out of the injector tips, it may save you from having to pull the plenum twice ;)
I'll clean em up and toss em back in
With 15 minutes left in the video you said let's pull the head. Lol gotta love time lapse. That's gonna be a really handy truck to have around.
We have a Miller Industries plant here in Greeneville Tennessee. Always some nice tow rigs in their yard. From what I understand, they've acquired several tow truck manufacturers like Champion, Vulcan, Century, Holmes etc.
Cool!
Did you get the wheel lift arms? That is a pretty nice roll back considering it’s age.
I think they're there.
He did.🎉
Why would you downgrade to an LS when you have a BBC in that thing?!
Get a carb intake for it and one of those new carbs with the spot for a TPS to bolt on to control the transmission and you can make that BBC run anyway you want!
Because even a mild 6 liter will run away from that turd of a 454 lol
@@LSswapGarage1
He didn't get that TOW TRUCK to race, he got it to tow and haul which the BBC was born to do. Besides, the BBC platform is still the king of the track too if you want to look at it that way.
@@LSswapGarage1 a stock Vortec 454 makes 410 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm and a LS 6.0 only makes 365 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.
@@LSswapGarage1 i have a C3500HD like this and a suburban with the L29 454. My Yukon with a 6.0 isn't even comparable when towing
@@bobmcdougall5904 Cool story... lol... I knew what you were going to say before I replied but its always fun anyway lol. That 454 at the end of day, without a bunch of mods is a gutless sack. End of story. Maybe try you know... tuning your stock 6 liter. Scary stuff, I know. The only guys thinking BBC is king aren't running stock Vortec 454s lol. And this thing in this truck is trash... good excuse to remove the problem.
Great find I look forward to more on this project

I’ve worked on a bunch of these big blocks in my shop and fortunately I’ve only had to change lifters. I actually have a fresh 8.1 I’m thinking about putting in my 80 square body. Great video as always!
Great video your channel is great never miss it
Sweet thanks Mr mortske always been my dream to own one of these
Ok 56. Cab idea is Awesome . Also for emergency bent valve fix . Get a 3lb slide hammer , the adapter that fit locking pliers and a piece of line that fits valve stem snuggly . Air to cyl, remove spring ,slide line on stem clamp locking pliers use slide hammer to bring valve to seat multiple times until straight /sealed . Some brake clean and lube will help. It's a bandaid fix but I've used it many times for folks who couldn't afford the valve replacement at the time. 60% of the time it works everytime .
Why can’t anything just be easy right? But at least you figured out what the problem was and once it’s fixed, I think you’re really going to enjoy having this rig around. Thank you Mr Mortske, I too know very little about the vortex engine and look forward to seeing you get this rig back doing roll back things.
Hope "the" problem is the only problem. I am not so sure. Especially when we hear those dreaded words: "somebody's already been in here."

I’m from the southern US…MANY MILES from the northern “rust belt”. Hard to wrap my mind around needing a small sledge hammer to get a tire/wheel off. 😳
That “made in America” stuff can be tricky. There is a LOT of “America” that is not part of the United States!
Last, YES they have “tooth brushes” in OK. Fact is, they were invented there. If they had been invented anywhere else they’d be called “TEETH-brushes” 🤪
I was taking a drink when you said DUff said you forgot the hubcaps.......almost snarked!!!!!

Should be a mark on the side of the bed that shows you to go back so far and then you can use the different iterations of features.
They did put an 8.1L in that body style. The 01-02 3500HD was still the OBS body style and came with either the 8.1L or the 6.5L. I see them on proxibid ocassionally. The vortec 454 is a pretty solid engine though, fix that head and it will likely run for a long time.
Good to know!

Great video, brother. That's a lot of work.
That's going to be a great asset to you! I can see it getting used a ton once you work all of the little kinks out of it! Awesome.
I had a lawnmower that came back to me like that seat did to you. My mom originally purchased this mower new, but it never ran right, so she hated it and eventually gave it away. It went through three more owners over the years that gave it away because they couldn't get it to run right. It eventually ended up sitting in the back yard of a guy I knew for a few years after it quit running. He eventually gave up on it and gave it to me when he moved. I got it about ten years after my mom gave it away. I put an $8 Chinese carb on it and made some minor tweaks, and it runs perfectly now.
