Hi, thanks for all the tutorials! I have a project where I need to model a multi-span, arch bridge. Do you know if this is possible in HEC-RAS? Thanks!
Hey, great tutorial! Thank you for all your hard work! I came across a problem. My Weir embankment does hold water. Do you know how should I troubleshoot it? :)
Nice video, thanks Have a question on skew though, I have tried by changing the US & DS stations in the culvert data editor but it still shows straight in plan view and when I try to run unsteady flow it comes up with an elevation error as it is obviously running into a bank. Any ideas? FYI figured it our, use GIS co-ordinates.
Thank you for these vedeo .will when I run my model I have an error message till me that the culvert elevation lower than the cell elevation can you give me any advice please.
Raise the culvert the in and out invert level to be a little bit more for any other questions please contact me on the my email designnetwork87@gmail.com
Good Morning I am in need to make a modelisation for a culverts. The project is about protection against inondations and culverts will assure the transportion of the flood throu a small habitations community. please haw to proceed with hec-ras thank you
Hello, is it available to view the longitudinal profile of this culvert with the terrain in the same view in this 2D model? I can't find the tab or the way to do this on general in 2D model, i know that is available in 1D but how it can be figured out in 2D 🙄
So I am breaching a dam. I have a culvert 1,000 downstream of dam. Is it possible to just input a culvert (1,000 DS of dam) without adding an embankment for the associated roadway? Can't hec ras 2d "figure out" that there is a roadway based on the contours that I put in? Trying to do this the easiest way possible. I get an error if I just add a culvert without a weir. Please help. Thanks!
Hola, que gran curso, felicitaciones!. Tiene alguna sugerencia para este error! he intentado refinar la malla y no ha sido posible correr el modelo con la presa. [For the Hydraulic Structure b1 in 2D area Perimeter2 there is an error with the model data. The weir station/elevation extends too far beyond the last face point (face intersection). Shorten the weir stationing or adjust the cell mesh Error Accepting the preprocessor files.]
In a way, it's similar in that the model will set the headwater elevation for the culvert using the 2D computational grid cell that aligns with the barrel inlet location. The culvert itself will be a 1D feature regardless of whether it's inside of a 2D area or a 1D reach.
can you connect a 2dflow area to a proposed canal using this method i keep getting this error........ canal_1_culvert_CL on structure CANAL_1_OUTFLOE_ does not entirely intersect the downstream area SA2 sorry for the dumb names
Hi Krey, Thanks for a great video. Is HEC.RAS 5.0.4 the first release where culverts are allowed to run underground? When using previous versions, would you have to modify your DTM to include a "trench" for where your culvert would be?
Yes, culverts can now be underground where the barrels cross the connection centreline, but HEC-RAS still can't deal with negative depths at the inlet and outlet, so the culvert invert will need to be at or above the terrain elevation in the computational grid cell that matches up with the inlet and outlet location. In most cases, that still involves a requirement to modify the terrain, since LiDAR data very rarely picks up the actual stream invert/thalweg elevation at inlets and outlets due to vegetation, debris, etc.
Hi Krey. Thank you for the videos. They are really helpful. Can you please advice if we can add culverts only without any structure using SA/2D Area Conn? Let 2D terrain take care in case if it spills. Let me know if you've not got my query correctly. Regards.
You'll still need an alignment, but if you copy and paste the terrain profile as the weir profile, it's essentially a line painted on the ground and can just run along the embankment/bridge deck terrain without a hydraulic effect. But barrels do need to cross the 2D/SA Area Connection alignment.
I am getting an error: 2D connection has a culvert lower than the cell it is connected to. I measured the invert off plan and entered into the culvert editor screen. Not sure why this is happening. Any ideas??
Krey, is there the possibility to create a culvert manually ? I mean ,without the necessity to use a shape file? I'm trying to do it as a simple "hole" , specifying DS/US stations and so on, but it doesn't work to me until now.
Thanks a lot Krey. I have notice that there is an important limitation of this tool regarding to the number of culverts groups that you are able to include. I seems to me that is 11 and not 20, as the User's manual points out. Just if this is useful to you. Regards from Perú.
It can certainly be delineated manually. I like to just hold CTRL down in the geometry editor while delineating the barrel centreline, then copy the coordinates into the barrel coordinates table.
Hi Krey. Thanks for the tutorial. I have a question. Wha's the relevance of adding a Weir Width. I mean, I have tested to add a weir width and it seems to be that nothing happens. In your case, you don't even add a width. Might you share any comments about that ?
Krey, just in case you need it. Apparently, the weir width is not just for schematic purposes. I mean, Ras doesn't use whit that, nevertheless pop up a trouble if the weir (width) extens the limits of the 2d area.
The weir width is just graphical. The actual width itself would need to be accounted for in the coefficient (which would also be ignored if you switch to the normal 2D equation domain.)
Hi Krey, is it possible to model 2 culverts like you do in the video? I'm a student and I have to model 2 simple culverts of a road crossing. I'm trying to do this but I am able to import only one culvert center line related to my SA/2D Area Conn.
You can add barrels to individual culvert group, as long as they all have the same geometry. If the geometry is different, you'd need to insert additional culvert groups. As long as the barrel centrelines cross the 2D/SA Area connection alignment, you should be able add many culverts.
If the model is already set up and running, you can add a profile line across any cross section and right click on the profile name to plot time series flow data.
Hello Users, I just need some insights on Breaklines. I have added breaklines into the 2d mesh area and enforced them as internal connections and entered weir data as top spillway elevation at 700m to the connections assuming they are acting as Embankments/weirs to the reservoir. But After I ran the Unsteady flow model successfully, in the results section in the RAS Mapper Water still flowing over the embankments at 653.55 only without filling the reservoir up to 700m elevation. What Should I do? Here I am attaching the supporting screenshots.. Thank you in Advance #HECRAS #2dMODELING
Hello Sir, How I make a single pier between on the Cross-section of the river bed. Example- The picture below shows a pillar(+) in the middle of the river(::::::). ------------------------------------------------------ pier ------> + ------------------------------------------------------
Might need to be enforced as a breakline or the elevations or lateral extends might need to be increased. If you want to send me your model using www.surfacewater.biz/contact/ I'll have a look.
Thank you, my first look at this type of designing, got lucky with a great instructor... Swiftest makes the difference !
Thank you so much! I'm covering all hecras tutorial you've done so far! Great job! Clear as water (static)!
Thanks, Krey. I used to learn the wormhole culvert in your workshop a year ago, and it is nice to watch this again to refresh memory.
Very informative ! I was not aware of this trick. Thanks
Thank you for these videos! They are very helpful
Great video! Definitely plan on watching more of these!
great video
Meaning to ask, what is the solution to one having a number of culverts but flow does not move through the culverts?
hi Krey ,
if yo don't mind, if the pump station can be added it will be more interesting and how water can be lifted to higher elevation
Hi, thanks for all the tutorials! I have a project where I need to model a multi-span, arch bridge. Do you know if this is possible in HEC-RAS? Thanks!
Hi Krey,
Thanks for the effort with these videos.
Much Appreciated!
Hi, Krey, thanks for the good job
Just a small note, the Dams' crest has to be horizontal
The dam crest should probably be designed to be horizontal, but in the model there is no limitation that I know of as to the vertical profile.
Have you ever added floating docks into a HECRAS model?
Thanks YOU sir! Great job.
Can this culvert be used to design underground penstock pipe from intake to powerhouse??
Thanks Krey

Hi Krey, Thanks. Can you impose a specified stage hydrograph at the downstream end of the culvert in this example?
You can now use Outlet Rating Curve or Outlet Time Series with any structure under the connection data editor
Thanks for the video.
Is the connection between the 2d upstream cells and the culvert similar to 1D-2D connection?
In a way, it's similar in that the model will set the headwater elevation for the culvert using the 2D computational grid cell that aligns with the barrel inlet location. The culvert itself will be a 1D feature regardless of whether it's inside of a 2D area or a 1D reach.

Hi Krey, I know that pump is not available for 2D yet but can we mimic pump with a 2D connection by defining an outlet rating curve?
Possibly; one workaround in the meantime is to insert small
storage areas on the to and from side and then connect those up to the 2D areas.

you can use HY-8 it's much simpler,to get the flow data you need to apply hydrology to find synthetic peak discharge

Same is the issue i am facing right now as mentioned in my question above.

How I make a single pier between on the Cross-section of the river bed.
Example-
The picture below shows a pillar(+) in the middle of the river(::::::).
------------------------------------------------------
pier ------> +
------------------------------------------------------
you can try with HEC RAS 6,it's easy to it by terrain reshaping
My dam cannot hold the water, can you give me some advice?
it still the same as previous without dam
Might need to be enforced as a breakline or the elevations or lateral extends might need to be increased. If you want to send me your model using www.surfacewater.biz/contact/ I'll have a look.
@@TheRASSolution anyway thank you, i think i have solved it :) i got some step that i missed hehe
