Got the i5 model with 16gb for free from work. We were doing a refresh of equipment and I was allowed to take one. Currently upgrading it to an i7 4790, 32GB of RAM, and an ARC A380 LP for a media server. Probably gonna pop in a 2.5gb network card for good measure too! All in only $150 came out of pocket for my build.
@@basicdadtech I actually went with Jellyfin and I'm really enjoying it! I have Yacht and Heimdall installed for process management, and I installed docker to make application installs easier. So far I'm enjoying it. The only thing I've really used Windows for is to make a shared network drive via Samba. I'll rip MKVs onto my PC , then transcode with Handbrake, and finally transfer to my media library through the network drive.
Excuse me, I have the exact same model, but I only checked that it only supports core i3 to i7 processors. How did you manage to find that you can install a xeon cpu?. Thank you
I also have the same model. Based on this video, I installed the same Xeon cpu in my system. It works well, but my temps or getting to 85c. I of course repasted with Arctic Mx-6 thermal paste. Should the stock cooler be able to handle the heat load? I wondering if I didn’t apply the paste well enough or need a better cooler. No gaming. Only video encoding using handbrake.
@@basicdadtech nope the RX 6300. A load have hit the market, and they are cheap. Not to easy to find as they where never meant to be sold but be in pre-builts like dells and HP systems. But they can be found. Do not pay any more then $60. They are not worth anymore then that. Anyway the RX 6400 is over kill and the CPU will be the bottleneck. As the RX 6300 is a cut back version it is a better match. It sits between the GTX 1050 Ti and Arc A380 performance wise and uses 32W so runs very cool. So with those two things paired. The CPU uses 45w and is almost on par with the i7 4770. Can be found easy on Aliexpress for around $30. And the GPU uses 32w. So yeah any PSU is going to handle them and the system will run very cool. As this setup is not going to be any better then a AMD Radeon 780M performance wise. It only makes sense if you can get a cheap X99 prebuilt. What isn't to hard nowadays. Think I got mine for like £25 including shipping. Was only missing a HD. So for around £150 you have a very capable gaming system and as the GPU is AMD will run ChimeraOS with no issues at all. Just google mitigations=off to unlock the CPU and amdgpu.gttsize on how to use the system ram as vram once the vram gets full. I have mine set to 2048.
i have the same computer and i was wondering if this one still has the original psu with 240-250 watts... i wanted to upgrade but i wasnt sure if the psu would be able to handle it, i only planned on upgrading the gpu
A high profile rx 550 won't fit unless you buy a low profile Rx 550. You also prolly need to buy an adapter for the PSU cause of the power draw and the PCI EXPRESS CONNECTORS, you'd need to switch to a ATX PSU if you really want to "Game Game". I have an Elitedesk 800 G1 SFF i5 4570 16gb ram and I added an Rx 580 to it with a 550W PSU connected using an adapter I bought and my PC Runs with no issue in gaming!
i currently have the exact pc. im building it for a friend... i made the mistake of not checking the cpu support list and put an i7-4790 in it..... needless to say it didnt work. now i gotta get on ebay and get that xeon!
Great video I reasently bought a old lenovo with an i5 4570 and was planning to upgrade it with an i7 4770 but if my mobo supports it I will look for a xeon I also have the rx 550 4gb.
If you can find it for cheap the E3-1265L v3 is a very good CPU and only uses 45w. The best that will work with this is the E3-1275L v3. As for GPU the RX 6300 isn't great but for $60 and being a single slot very low power kind hard to beat. And yes the RX 6300 not RX 6400. The RX 6300 has hit places like ebay.
@@cheteragames It will work fine. Its just uses the standard FCLGA1150 socket. I go for the L version Xeon as it has a very low TDP so never gets hot. The thing can only pull 45W max. The RX 6300 uses 32W so also never gets hot. The thing hardly uses any power and can get decent performance in gaming. Also can get it for around $60 new.
I just love these random builds
Love that upgrade path. Not a bad little machine now
Thank you. I’m happy with it. Might add an RX 6400 eventually.
