Install Batocera on a Chromebox - Cheap Emulation Box
I recently acquired 3 old Chromeboxes for free. In this video I attempt to reset one of them so I run a different OS on it. Specifically Batocera. In a future video I will try to install a Linux operating system on one of them.

All New EasySMX X20 Wireless Controller
i have optiplex 3000ssf, with this litle beast will play GTA 6 ; (with 30 fps minimum)
I bought one of these YEARS ago. this year, I plugged it in, and found out it has XBMC on it, or its new name (forgot what it is now) Now what's weird is mine says it has an i7 in it? Weird. I have to check that out later.
What do you expect you get what you pay for
Can i have one lol 😂 Thats looks like a fun little emulation box! 👍
Oh my god I jumped when I heard how terrible those speakers are, lmao.
It kind of reminds me of the budget tablets you used to get at like kinney drugs, lol.
Regardless of the looks. A tablet for 25 dollars with those kind of specs is pretty phenomenal for today's standards.
Looks like those cheap RCA tablets from the early 2010s
Slap in 400w PSU, and a GTX 4060 LP from Gigabyte. I just bought i5-8500 Z2 G4 SFF for $120 shipped from eBay. 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD with Windows 11 Pro and DVD-RW. i5-8500 is later renamed to i5-9500. Same exact CPU.
Easy way to solve CPU temps in games, crank up the visuals to lower the FPS. 😂
You can squeeze in GTX 4060 low profile from Gigabyte into it, if you make sure the CPU is 65w TDP or lower. There are OE HP power supplies that goes up to 400w on some models with higher power CPUs.
Hey man i just subscribe i like these videos at 4:17 where you say installing Batocera(i Guess a emulator) for the linux distro is recommend PopOS its it very light weight and customizable i have installed custom firmware on a chromebook before PopOS workd fine with it with a processor of Intel® Celeron® N4120 and with 4GB Emmc Ram i really hope you read this comment and take my words for a consideration Thank you
I actually have tried out POP OS before. I did a video about 5 months ago and installed it on an old Optiplex. I’ll try that out on one of the Chromeboxes. Thank you.
Pretty bad... But... 4:50 although it is slow it is still better than my 10.1 LG Tablet with I think 1 GB Ram. And Android 7.x... Most apps won't install and can't sign into Google really. I was able to download and install Aurora Store... which is a competitor to Google Play Store. At this point the best tablets are Amazon Fire tablets when they go on sale only. I got the latest 10 Fire Tablet, great speakers and great video playback. Some limitations... you can live with it some what... what you can't control is the constant advertising bar to download. I also make sure I don't have the advertising on ( you know the $15 upgrade). So my tablet was worth I think $85. And I got a credit and asked Amazon to take off the advertising... which they very reluctantly do - specially for seniors or those with issues like arthritis/dementia. My mother kept downloading the annoying video games - Candy Crush I think... among others... I had to keep deleting them. I do download Aurora Store... because you can still Google Apps ANONYMOUSLY... like Protonmail for email. Some games... obviously you can install the competition Walmart!!! I forget which others... but like if you like an app and is not in the fire store, then you can go to Aurora Store (download it from their website). Oh you can install Brave browser and when you play videos on Y-T it skips ads. Which are annoying. You can buy the Mygica TV tuner USB C and turn your tablet into a TV... as long as you buy adapter and install to house antenna. $30... adapter maybe $6... Like I said when on sale Fire Tablets are awesone! And if you know more recent adaptation like Audora Store, so don't install Google PlayStore and try to limit ads from Amazon... then you'll be happy. Or you can still F-droid and try to get by on open source apps but hatder
This ain't bad at all for the money to play like this.
Я граю в DLS 25 . Користуючись GamSir x3 Pro , в мене дуже велика затримка відгуку на кнопках "A" "B" "C" "Y" . 🤷♂️ не розумію як виправити .
Id wait for the 70 mini pro
Just looked it up. Looks very promising.
I had the CN60. It was upgraded to 16GB. I wish I had kept it. 😑
I have three of these as well. Mine have an i7 though and Batocera runs great, all the way up to PS2. My son uses one as his Minecraft machine, they are great little boxes.
lol wtf your cd drive, never seen that before in a 9020
Dang. Id love to find a free or a few free chromeboxes like you. Ive always wanted to convert one into a emulation station/Batocera system
Wonder if it runs Fortnite....
Check out my other video on it.
But compared to other $25 tablets...it's phenomenal! 🤣
Can I use Netflix on this ?
Hello! Is the "Gigabyte GTX 750Ti 2GB low profile" card compatible with the Optiplex 9020 SFF computer tower?🤔
Yeah. That should work.
@basicdadtech Thanks! :)
5:39 yeah, good idea getting the larger RAM modules, but save the 2x 4GB sticks for the one that you're going to put a desktop build on. Actually maybe you'd want 2x 8GB sticks for modern distros. You'll probably be fine with just the 4GB for Batocera. EmulationStation and one emulator at a time isn't that memory intensive.
I have installed both
Which Linux distro?
2gb of ram is insane
I know. It’s so little.
the insane part is that I remember a time when your comment would have worked the other way.
I remember when the max ram you could get in a desktop was 512mb.
3gb of ram 32gb of storage. That thing will struggle to even run simple android games or too many tabs open on chrome 😂 in all seriousness it's sad to see e-waste being generated like this or for some kid to get it as a present and it's really only a overglorified paperweight.
start: 1:37
put the gpu into a lenovo m720q
The mini PC? It will fill in there?
i bought one put my nes roms and mame roms on it it plays you tube pretty good it a $25 tablet what do you expect im happy 32gb rom 3gb ram android 13 and a quad core expands to 256gb for $25 it works really fast
It will change to landscape, if you look on the bottom on the car right of the screen there is an icon that has the two arrows in a rounded square kinda like a square recycling sign.
Just snagged one of the rx 550’s for 30 bucks for my dirt cheap emulation pc and it works great for what I need. Just to geek about the rest of the build though, it has a core i3 6100 that I got for 7 dollars, a nearly new mini itx motherboard I got for another 35, another 35 for two new 8gb sticks of ram (at the time was the best deal on ram I could find) a 300w flex psu I got for free, a cooler I got for 10 bucks, a 1tb ssd for another 50, and a solid metal mini itx case that normally costs about 200 on AliExpress but I got sent for free by a client who never got back to me about the rest of the build. All in all cost me about 175 after taxes. Haven’t tried anything higher than GameCube but everything plays just fine as far as I can tell. No complaints for that personal cost.
can get something better for $25. Even some old something used. Better off just waiting until you can get something better.
Tell me how I can put the audio of the movies in Spanish.
can you please try skyrim legendary edition ? i remember some years ago i wanted to buy a cheap dell tablet with a z3735f cpu and that couldn't run it but was close, then the core m series cpus launched and those could run the game but were expensive :(
We need more single slot LP, not stupid overpriced dual slot LP 😒 Gigabyte 😒
Stocking stuffer for the 5 year old in the house
Quanto tempo levou para clonar o 2 TB
if quad core cpu is true then it has double the cores then my current pc!
Just a heads up it can run 720P 60fps.
Could I request you test Moonlight game streaming performance as well? It's tough to predict based on chipset alone, and these things are all over the map.
moonlight is just streaming from your pc so it will only be based on how good your wifi is
Incorrect. Client chipset and configuration has huge effects on decode speed and latency, there’s posted benchmarks for different chipsets you can find easily.
This tablet is on his own time which is turtle times.
Nice comparison. I scored a free Optiplex 9020 recently, and I wanted to see what I could do with it. I bought a refurbished RX6400 for $42 and a 16GB DDR3 RAM Kit for $16. Neither have arrived yet but this video made me excited to see what my $58 gaming PC is going to be capable of.
Would you be willing to see if this thing will run mame .CHD games? Specifically Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy. I have been looking for a way to play these on a handheld. And yes I know these are available on the N64 and other consoles. Those are not the same.
A $25 picture frame that can do email. Everything else is just torture.
Thanks for the video. I'm looking for one of this for my arzopa monitor as well. I intend to use it during outtages out of a powerbank. I have 2 requests if possible; 1. can it send video signal to the monitor through the extra usb-c port at the back? 2. Do you have a powerbank to test the usb-c PD they advertise? Otherwise very informative video.
where are PS3 Games
It's a little ridiculous to expect such a cheap tablet to be able to do big processing tasks. This would be perfect as an e-reader for somebody who can't afford an e-ink tablet, or as a writing tool with a Bluetooth keyboard.
I want you for Christmas
