Here are things that Gianluca Basile said in an interview after losing in Euroleague's final against Maccabi Tel-Aviv about their fans: "We had a good feeling before the game. We felt that the pressure was on Maccabi, that we were coming in as underdogs and would play more freely. We were in an excellent mental state and ready one hundred percent, but the moment we stepped onto the court everything changed. It was like entering the crater of a volcano. To be honest, on the stairs, Patricio Prato told me we'd never make it out alive, but I told him it always feels that way and after a few minutes, it passes. When the players were introduced and they presented us, there was a sort of chorus of boo. I had never heard anything like it. Our legs were literally shaking. It was an unbelievable situation. I never thought a crowd could have such an impact, but the game was over before it even began. There, I began to think maybe what Prato told me was right. When the game started, everything exploded in our faces, and if I thought we could ignore the crowd and the atmosphere, Maccabi proved us wrong, ending the game within five minutes. In the first timeout, Rafa already said we didn't come here to be Maccabi's doormat, but even he understood. It was a strange timeout, as if we all understood that we wouldn't win here, so at least we'd fight for our dignity. By halftime, we already wanted to be on the plane. To fly away as fast as possible. We felt like Maccabi's playthings and their audience."
I think it happens more when the basketball team and the football team are parts of the same club/society. If you are a fan of Barcelona football team you are probably also a fan of Barcelona basketball team, specially if you are from Barcelona. The teams in this video are all (I think) divisions of a multi sport society that also has a football team.
There is a fantastic vidoe where US players talk about thier time spent playing in Europe. They give a great insight into what it feels like to be on court while the Ultras are in full flow.
These fans are also football (soccer) ultras, the clubs of Aris Thessaloniki and Panathinaikos in Greece has both football and basketball teams and the fans attend matches of both sports, often they will clash with fans of other Greece basketball teams. A few other European countries may have the same atmosphere at a basketball game. It's the combination of having football and basketball teams in the same clubs which makes these sporting events so outrageous, you will not find it on this scale in most of Europe I'm afraid, a basketball match between the Dutch top teams is very tame in comparison.
Welcome to the Wonderful World of European Sports, Ian. 😂 All you just saw is nothing compared to when a derby is being played, or European Cups. The rivalry is immense.
You are spot on. Your hypotheses on how it feels to be in such a crowd... you stop being an individual You're dragged into this vibe, that makes all thousands of you to one single ''thing''. Unififed I mean. I've just felt it on Anfield and Liverpool matches. so not been to a basketball game for instance. But in Europe, it's the same fans. Especially if the football team also have other teams in different sprots, it's the same ultras supporting their team or city, no matter what the sport is. Especially Eastern Europe and South-Eastern Europe. The feeling btw, are s o strong the first time, you feel like you're gonna cry, because it is just that beautiful. The sheer roar in your ears, and the adrenaline in your body... It's an out of body experience for sure. Trust me, after such a experience, you do understand more why someone could get pumped up and wants to fight. Not saying I do understand the fighting, but you get a feeling of why it COULD happen. You get really riled up. One thing though; there is a huge difference, where I think you, USA, got it better. I wish we had the same popularity with college sprots, or even high school. Meaning, I wish we also got these HUGE stadiums, and that it was a popular to watch, even when high schoolers and college students played. That differs ofc, from country to country. but college sports I would say pretty sure isn't even close to what you do in America, on a range of sports; Soccer, Football, basketball, track and field, cheerleaders, atheltics... Like, you got SO MUCH you can choose from or do in America, when it comes to schools. Not just sports either. That is really cool.
There are some videos of actual American basketball players telling stories about the atmosphere and things that happened during of their time playing the European Basketball, They are really fun.
the Greek chant at the start is a classic, and always laugh when I hear it. It goes along the lines of the fans giving it to (I think) the league itself, ie questioning the sexual leanings of someones dad, the league being a prostitute (using the non swear word versions of course)...
That chant is Aris calling today's PAOK fans out for their fathers and grandfathers that left Aris for PAOK when Aris had financial problems. If your search "Oo poustarades English lyrics" you find it here on UA-cam with translations but remember. It's very rude coming directly from the heart of the Aris family.
Serbia, Greece and Turkey are unique in the world of sport-fans on so many levels. What is casual game after working week for others, for us it's like a purpose of life. And even when someone disagrees they change their mind once they come to the game and get infected by the atmosphere. That's true emotion and people really care for a win, celebrate it or getting really mad after loss, and sometimes violent. Mostly it's not a place for kids because it's not rare for things to get out of control. In USA for example, they have security guards around the court, in Europe we have armed forces with big shields and all the equipment usual for street riots. It's not possible for fans of two opposite sides to be close one to another. Not rare situation that police even uses water cannons or rubber bullets to keep things in check but that part mostly applies for games between archrivals (derby games of extreme security risk). Both, love for your team and hate for an opponent are at extreme level in Europe.
To provide some context, about 1.4 million fans regularly support professional basketball games across Europe each week during the season. Between just the five biggest markets in Europe (UK, Germany, France, Spain & Italy) the number of regular football supporters is 131 million.
well to be fair you got two great clips of some of the craziest fans in all of europe first ARIS Super3 from greece and Crvena Zvezda DELIJE from serbia most who played the euro league will tell you it is nerve wracking and actually terrifying to play against them at their home because the fans are so crazy , a lot of ex nba players that played in europe quit because they could not handle the stress and no that is not a joke
Thats the beauty about it, there is no choregraphie with it. You just know all the songs since you are always there. Than usaully 1 person starts it and everbody joins from there
I was an hockey fan of the team of my hometown. We always followed our team on every game they played. We always sing along and jump for them and quite often after the match they said to us that we were the +1 player on the ice. They feel us, our energy, our love for the team, it was amazing! Is not just sport, is love and passion.
As most European clubs have football and basketball (and often handball) teams in the same club. Real Madrid is a basketball team as well as a football team quite similar the football ultras support the basketball club also. That's why the atmosphere is quite similar. As others have said , American sports is hotdogs and $$$$$$, European sport is passion (especially in Greece/Turkey/the Balkans).
Thank God that first basketball clip didn’t have any subtitles because the lyrics are very offensive towards the opposing team. That first clip is from greek basketball and if you know anything about greek sports fans then you know that almost every other match is full of violent incidents.
In Europe there are many clubs that often offer several sports. If you love your club, it doesn't matter which sport is being played. For example, we often go to our club's basketball games and support the team, whether I'd rather watch football than basketball ^^
I played for the Euro League in Turkey..... the whole floor shakes, you get thrown stuff and i even got thrown hot coins that they heated with lighters. Its anothe world brother, the intimidation factor is huge, playing at home has another meaning.
Clubs are integral for the each city. They move up and down leagues, they don't switch players every year. It's cultural, and a great way to keep old rivalries alive.
These are not casual fans, this is like a culture for them, they live for these moments. They stand during the week organizing things for the matches, choreographies, banner, flags, everything.
Handball packs the biggest punch pound for pound! Handball is the National sport here in Iceland and is huge in Europe.. Don't have any link but searching Handball should suffice 😊
How it happens is basically when a group of lads or a fan club come up with a chant and do it in a stadium, people nearby them will join in until it gets bigger. If the chant happens enough time and it catches on, then all the regulars will know what to say when they hear it. Random people will start the chant and others will join in. Before you know it, everyone who knows the sport knows the chant. If you knew the words to a popular chant, you could literally go into the stadium and start the chant and people would join in. Just make sure you're doing the right chant for the right location.
The fans who cheers in basketball also cheers in football, handball, waterpolo etc. The red/white fans are from Serbia - Crvena zvezda Beograd (Red star Belgrade) ❤️🤍🔴⚪️
The town I was born in has a handball team. Right now they are back in the first league. They play in a very small very old venue with a capacity of 3000 people. It's so small and cramped, and the crowd is so loud that TV announcers and even coaches of other teams said that it is just madness playing there with a lot of people basically two feet behind the players shouting away for 60+ minutes.
You are right. - The crowd have club songs that everyone knows. - There are also random chants, this is mostly on known melody's of famous/popular songs.
There are some UA-cam videos of American players who have played in Europe. There are many reasons why the crowd is like this. It is generational, you don't switch teams. And ticket prices are much more affordable, so all socioeconomic groups can go to a game without saving for months. People are loyal to their team no matter what sport it is.
Most if not all of these are not basketball teams but Clubs also known as Sporting Clubs etc. Clubs are the hole name badge and the thing that represents the people, the town etc. Most if not all basketball teams have a football team counterpart under the same club thats why the fans are so driven and passionate here , the same fan who lights flares and gets into fights for the club does that for all sports of the Club sometimes even in volleyball/handball/waterpolo and more . Also as i said most of these Clubs represent towns/cities/suburbs and they have deep roots in their communities.
A lot of the clubs in europe have different sports within the club.. the clubs are usually NOT business but member owned football, basketball, athletics etc.. so many of the fans/ultras will support not only the football team but the teams of the other sports within their club as well..
Of course they had to be Greeks..😅 1st (Yellow/Black) and 3rd (Green/White) teams where greek teams.. Just like foodball (soccer 😅) greeks are the best fans to have as a team..

U should definitely check out Partizan vs Fulenbrada preseason friendly game they played last year it was played on an outside court the atmosphere was fantastic! Love from Serbia ❤
The fans here are largely the same as the ultras at football games - a lot of european clubs have both a basketball and a football team, among other sports, under the same name
I work on a stadium, Epet Arena in Prague and the stuff you see happen is crazy. For example, fights between fans and dozens on police cars are completely normal in every game, some stuff is even much worse.
On the football front, the World cup finals, are a good platform to admire the fans input into the match's, with the different choreographies from the different cultures, different continents, is fabulous.
Minute 13:36 - It depends on the sector of the stadium you buy the ticket for. If you buy the ticket for the "organized ultras" sector, you don't do that to see the game... Sometimes you don't see it because of flags and smoke; you do it to be part of the game, to be the players spirit and energy, to push them. If you want to see the game, you buy a ticket for a "quite" sector of the stadium or you watch the game from home on tv And it works like that in football to (you call it soccer). If you buy the ticket for the ultras sector, you want to be part of those 20.000 people that sream, and dance, and chant... watching the game is secondary
Look Bro. For example in Greek you are not a fan from aris or panathinaikos football club. You are a fan from all sports in this club. Basketball, volleyball and more. That’s a reason that the atmosphere is like in a football game.
Big football clubs have basketball teams sometimes. So basically these games are filled with football fans of the same club. And since a basketball arena is much smaller you only have the die hard ultra's that attend the games. But if the football club is playing the same day the arena will be nearly empty.
In Europe ,if you are a fan of a football team ,usually the football clubs ,have also a basketball team or a handball team ,so the fans are going to all the clubs teams games ,no matter which sport it is.Saturday are going to the football game and sunday are going to the basketball game,or sometimes the games are in the same day.The reason is that the fans love the entire club, which can have numerous teams in different sports.

It was a strange timeout, as if we all understood that we wouldn't win here, so at least we'd fight for our dignity. By halftime, we already wanted to be on the plane. To fly away as fast as possible. We felt like Maccabi's playthings and their audience."
It's not just basketball or football, It's defending the city.
The greek ultras at waterpolo is fun to watch Too 😂
This happens only in Greece, Serbia, Turkeye and some in Italy, however the loudest ones are in Athens..
in france and England too!! maybe not so loud but more violent!!
@@jeandalmatos610 Nah, not since we've been poisoned by islam.
@@jeandalmatos610 saying france or english fans are more violent than greeks is laughable
I think it happens more when the basketball team and the football team are parts of the same club/society.
If you are a fan of Barcelona football team you are probably also a fan of Barcelona basketball team, specially if you are from Barcelona.
The teams in this video are all (I think) divisions of a multi sport society that also has a football team.
....in Thessaloniki.....in the city of the god ARI (ΑΡΗ)
There is a fantastic vidoe where US players talk about thier time spent playing in Europe. They give a great insight into what it feels like to be on court while the Ultras are in full flow.
Please, copy the link.

and part 3 ua-cam.com/video/K2R85qq4oBE/v-deo.html
Theres also a video of a us player and his girlfriend sitting on the bench. The wife looks terrified of the crowd
Lol the American fan atmosphere is a combination of High School Musical and a Nuremberg rally!!😂😂😂
Even Darude is European, from Finland. 😀
And then they say we're the ones consuming their culture lol
In all fairness has to admit that Film industry is firmly in American hands. And hiphop music, kids love it.@@schtreg9140
To provide some context, about 1.4 million fans regularly support professional basketball games across Europe each week during the season. Between just the five biggest markets in Europe (UK, Germany, France, Spain & Italy) the number of regular football supporters is 131 million.
well to be fair you got two great clips of some of the craziest fans in all of europe
first ARIS Super3 from greece and Crvena Zvezda DELIJE from serbia
most who played the euro league will tell you it is nerve wracking and actually terrifying
to play against them at their home because the fans are so crazy , a lot of ex nba players
that played in europe quit because they could not handle the stress and no that is not a joke
Gotta love that mascot acting like an extra in Saving Private Ryan lol
If your home crowd doesn't affect the teams you have a serious problem.
It's often same fans that attend football, basketball, volleyball and water polo in Greece, and it's the same mayhem in all 4 sports.
Now that is a home advantage. Good luck being the opposing player.
In America 🇺🇸 you take the family to get a hotdog maybe get on the kiss cam. In Serbia 🇷🇸 you strap on your armor and kiss the family goodbye.
As others have said , American sports is hotdogs and $$$$$$, European sport is passion (especially in Greece/Turkey/the Balkans).
they still playing Darude Sandstrom.. that makes me happy as Darude is from Finland
Lol, you find the most right words to express your reaction to the European sport fandom. I'm crying of laughter. 😂👍
football ultras are the same group in basketball , same team same ultras
There are some videos here on YT where American basketplayers discuss their experience playing in Europe. They arre really depicting going to war.😂
There is one thing that is true with all Ultras. They LIVE the sport and club they support
The experience after the match is just as chaotic, you are so full of energy that you cannot sleep, you have no voice for 2-3 days after the match.
Greek Basketball Derbies. The two rival teams in Thessaloniki Aris-PAOK and in Attika OSFP-PAO.
From Turkey I am a Besiktas fan, and we always support our brother PAOK team everywhere! Go PAOK)))
Basketball in Europe is a warzone compared to the US lol
The BBall Ultras are the same as the Football ones.
In Europe and SA we support a team whatever the sport is.
We like Handball too in France, and we're pretty good... 😁🇫🇷
@@christopheb.6121 as a Dane i sadly have to agree 🤣😘
Our sport is literally a pseudo war
Love it.
8:52 Kudos to the stadium maker!!
I love the austrian Graz Numberplate with you number on the back! Gg man! Greets from austria
The fans who cheers in basketball also cheers in football, handball, waterpolo etc. The red/white fans are from Serbia - Crvena zvezda Beograd (Red star Belgrade) ❤️🤍🔴⚪️
THE BEST ULTRAS VIDEO EVER (Ultras World 1M Special)
The town I was born in has a handball team. Right now they are back in the first league. They play in a very small very old venue with a capacity of 3000 people. It's so small and cramped, and the crowd is so loud that TV announcers and even coaches of other teams said that it is just madness playing there with a lot of people basically two feet behind the players shouting away for 60+ minutes.
These teams are from Greece Serbia YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE.FUNERALS ARE NBA GAMES 9:51
The Europe videos is Greece and Turkey, and the funny thing is we are louder in football (soccer)
Luv your comments you can see it is from your heart, thanks for the laughs, London here 63 years old
A lot of the clubs in europe have different sports within the club..
the clubs are usually NOT business but member owned
football, basketball, athletics etc..
so many of the fans/ultras will support not only the football team but the teams of the other sports within their club as well..
Of course they had to be Greeks..😅 1st (Yellow/Black) and 3rd (Green/White) teams where greek teams.. Just like foodball (soccer 😅) greeks are the best fans to have as a team..
No matter how many times I see this, I will always laugh with the Aris Mascot reaction. 😂
OMG Ian got us... the secret for being slim than any american, go to an sport event once a week, works better than any gym...
01:20 IWrocker: It's just a fun, chill family friendly environment you know.
08:15 Girl on bottom right: Eurokid just having a fun, chill day with dad.
Let me hear "Delije", my favourits from Belgrade. That is a pure joy.
You should react to "American basketball players talking about european basketball atmosphere" it's more about insight
In Europe, you have to be in shape to be a FAN! Imagine the calves on all those "jumpers"! 🦵😶
Basically, the same supporters/ultras from football are supporing the baskeball team also.
ARIS!!!! YOU CANNOT BEAT ARIS ULTRAS!!!
I watch the Aris basketball ultras clip whenever I'm tryna get pumped up for something! 🤟🏼
Its funny you said ”is that aloud?” 😂 we really dont care ifrån aloud or not 😂❤🎉🎉🎉
Ultra - Our way of life! (10.000 Subscribers Special)
I am from belgium europa. Dont get me wrong but as far as fans u guys are softies😅😂❤
"I played in Serbia, brother" - Jokic
best fans experience i had with Partizan was waterpolo or handball games, all you need is 300 of these guys to make it loud.
If you want to see the game, you buy a ticket for a "quite" sector of the stadium or you watch the game from home on tv
And it works like that in football to (you call it soccer). If you buy the ticket for the ultras sector, you want to be part of those 20.000 people that sream, and dance, and chant... watching the game is secondary
If I was a basketball player in Europe and I saw that energy, singing and jumping... I would be like: "Holy shit... what if we LOSE!?!"
We Greek fans love our clubs
Look Bro. For example in Greek you are not a fan from aris or panathinaikos football club. You are a fan from all sports in this club. Basketball, volleyball and more. That’s a reason that the atmosphere is like in a football game.
There's going to be an NRL football match in vegas on 2 march
Haha, nice background touch with Škoda Favorit :D
Big football clubs have basketball teams sometimes. So basically these games are filled with football fans of the same club. And since a basketball arena is much smaller you only have the die hard ultra's that attend the games. But if the football club is playing the same day the arena will be nearly empty.
...you don't want the translation for the first chant from Europe (Greece).
