Don’t die with your song still in you.
It is 3 o’clock in the afternoon. August 12, 2000. I’m propped in a wheelchair in a long and
brightly lit hospital corridor, waiting for my CT scan.
My heart is inflamed; my chest is burning as if someone had put a sword into it.
All of a sudden, the pain gets so intense that I can’t breathe.
And then I’m being lifted out of my body.
My whole life plays out in front of me.
The people I loved, the things I did, the places I went… they all disappeared. I was pushed out of this reality, so fast there was nothing left to hold on to.
The only thing that stayed with me?
A deep feeling of regret that I did not sing.
For years, I had wanted to be a professional opera singer. I’d fallen in love with the beauty of opera after taking my first lesson at age 16. Since then, my dream has been to sing like Maria Callas.
But I couldn’t muster up the discipline of sitting at the piano to practice every day. It was such a struggle.
What was really going on, however, was that I was coming up against my own limiting beliefs.
Deep down, I thought that my voice wasn’t good enough. That I don’t have what it takes to endure hours and hours of daily solo practice. And as a daughter, who am I to make too much of myself anyway?
All this “I’m not good enough” conditioning from early childhood sat in my way of reaching my dreams.
But then, a miracle occurred.
I encountered Buddhism and the sacred art of mantra meditation. Chanting these ancient healing mantras rewired my entire nervous system.
And it made me keenly aware of my life’s mission: to understand the full capacity of the human voice, so I could empower people like you to heal your voice and, as a result, transform your life.
Everything that blocks your voice blocks your life.
This realization came back to me at this pivotal moment. I was drowning in a swamp of fear and self-doubt until death came and to kiss me awake.
The ultimate wake-up call that taught me how the enlightened part of death was ultimately enlivening me.
The experience had such a lasting effect on me that I vowed to not die with the music still in me.
Now my heart is on fire again. But this time, it burns with passion.
To serve. To love. To awaken.
