In this series we interview Aurovilians about their personal experiences with the Matrimandir in Auroville. Today it is Mona. She came to Auroville in 1987 to do her internship as an architecture student. In 1988 Mona started working at the Matrimandir, which was being built. In 1989 she worked on her thesis on the Matrimandir and the Pyramids. And now Mona simply feel grateful to have the Matrimandir around her…
This Web series is a human experiment, looking into how the aurovilliens relate to the soul of Auroville - the Matrimandir. Hoping that this is the common ground for human unity. The dream is to interview all citizens of Auroville.
At the very centre of Auroville one finds the 'soul of the city', the Matrimandir.
The name 'Matrimandir' literally means 'Temple of the Mother'. According to Sri Aurobindo, the 'Mother' concept stands for the great evolutionary, conscious and intelligent principle of Life, the Universal Mother, - which seeks to help humanity move beyond its present limitations into the next stage of its evolutionary adventure, the supramental consciousness.
The Matrimandir can be viewed as a large golden sphere which seems to be emerging out of the earth, symbolising the birth of a new consciousness. Situated in a large open area called 'Peace', from where the future township will radiate outwards. Since the past 50 years, Matrimandir's slow and steady progress towards completion has been followed by many. The atmosphere is quiet and charged, and the area beautiful.
The Matrimandir is in the midst of a garden divided into 12 individually named parks such as "Harmony", "Bliss", Perfection", Progress", "Consciousness", etc., each with their variety of flowers, shrubs and trees. The Mother envisaged the Matrimandir as the "symbol of the Divine's answer to man's aspiration for perfection" and as "the central cohesive force" for the growth of Auroville.
Auroville is a universal town where men and women of all countries can live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
The purpose of Auroville is to realise universal human unity.

Great Architecture ! But The French Connection.....Hmmm.....Why Was Is It So Necessary.....To Emphasize.....ON THE PERMISSION OF THE MOTHER ? OFFCOURSE SHE WOULD SUPPORT ! WHY WOULDN'T SHE ? BUT IN SO MANY PLACARDS AND MILESTONES, THAT WE SEE, WHILE WALKING AROUND AUROVILLE,AND TOWARDS THE MEDITATION CENTER, ITS AGAIN AND AGAIN EMPHASIZED AND MADE TO REMEMBER, THAT "IT WAS BUILT WITH "THE MOTHERS PERMISSION" ! Why So Many Reminders ? Was There A Problem At Time When It Was Built, That THE FRENCH Need To Explain And Remind Us About "THE MOTHERS PERMISSION" ? Or, Is It Simply FRENCH COLONIAL MINDSET, Just Like Other Colonisers, Like THE BRITISH, That They Fear Losing That Small Piece Of Land, In This Vast Indian Subcontinent ? Are They INSECURE About Something ? Or Is Is Just One Of "THOSE EUROPEAN WHITE WAYS", Of Doing Things ? I Mean, What Will Happen, If India Takes Over The Last French Territory ? Will The Research Stop ? And Even If The Meditation Continues, For Not More Than 20 Mins Though, After That 2 Day Advance Booking 🙄, Which Is NEVER ENOUGH, For Someone Who Meditates Regularly, And Knows That 20 Mins Is Not Enough Time,To Even Start Real Meditation ! Its Nothing ! So Auroville Stop 🛑 Your Nepolianic Insecurities! Ok ? Neither Modi, Nor Annamalai, Is Going To Ask You To Give That Little Ego Of A Place Of Yours !
