22:00: You need to get into the habit of ALWAYS pulling up to the lip of the trailer, then lower it down until it's not only touching the 5th wheel saddle, put also resting on it a bit. Then, when you back under, you know that the landing gear is off the ground, and you can quickly wind it up.
Also, older 48' trailer had the kingpin set closer to the nose by a full foot. I've seen everything from a 3' setback on an old 'curved nose' 40' trailer to a full 6' setback on an experimental 57' trailer Swift was using in California hooked to a special daycab about 30 years ago.

This was a great video. I am in the process of getting mine. Just finished my 160 hours at the academy in El Paso but due to a family emergency I had to pause my testing. Watching these videos is such a refresher for me. I appreciate the time and detail. The pre inspection, connecting and disconnecting and routes. I pray to God in May I can resume testing. I need to take the under the hood, in cab, air brakes, maneuvers and road !!!! Still lots ahead to complete. I’m excited. Please keep making these kinds of videos. New subscriber here

We're just leaving Charolette North Carolina to Wilmington North Carolina, then to Raeford. I got my stuff packed up and we're leaving for Georgia! Variant promised me a new Freightliner, I'm naming Fred after my son who passed away 3 years ago. He also was a trucker, and a good kid. Someday I'll hopefully meet you on the road, maybe ask for your autograph? LOL! Keep safe and after I've got 1,000 miles behind me, I'll start doing some videos. The stop sign for the three directions you mentioned in that parking lot is actually pretty standard. Everyone inside the parking lot had stop signs because they are maneuvering through a parking lot. The vehicles approaching you from the right were inbound from the street or highway, so it makes perfect sense for them to have the right of way.

I don’t know if there are used today but I liked using a heater bag, it would keep 3 cans of soup super hot, you needed to use gloves to open because they were so hot. I would usually eat about 2 am when I would stop for the night, then start after morning traffic. 95 is a tough road to travel because of the tolls in New York and the massive 4 wheel traffic. Since I lived in Connecticut the last place I was sent was New England. To close to home don’t you know. I use to go out for 6 to 8 weeks. It took me 6 weeks to watch Star Wars because I always fell asleep with in 5 to 10 minutes. Waiting to pick up is a real pain in the back side. Everyone thinks you time is free. All the best on the road, keep the shinny side up, only the best for you.

Hey Alex, on some trailers the placement of the kingpin plate may be further up than some, that's the reason why your trailer wasn't as close to the truck like you normally see it.

When attaching the trailer you go half way under it, than lift the truck until it makes contact with the trailer, than back up under it completely. That's how i learned to do it in Europe.

I spent 5 years traveling/living in Latin America and plan to teach Spanish with my degree. However, I am going to be driving for a year, or two so that I can pay all my loans. In this way, an educator's wage will be livable.
I was hired by Yellow in May 2023. You all know what happened and they cancelled my class at the academy.
I have since found a smaller company (160 drivers) and it's wonderful! I will be sharing updates on my channel soon.

oh that's amazing! good luck! one safety tip my instructor gave me was to look at the intersections on the bridges to see if there are cars turning right and merging onto the highway. if you think you're gonna be too close to the car merging onto the highway just move into the left lane. this tip gives you a couple extra seconds to move which really makes a difference
