Thank. You. I have been beating myself over the head trying to figure out this composition thing. No matter what I tried everyone I watched was like "rule of thirds, rule of thirds" and like, I get that part. But using shapes for composition is something I've seen NO ONE else talk about. My brain kept rebelling, because I would look at a picture and be like "...that's not rule of thirds, but it looks good. Why can't I do that instead?" So really, thank you. Learning you can use shapes for composition and framing to help direct the eye has just opened a whole new world for me.
Probably the best and most concise breakdown of comic book composition theory I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing! David Finch is an invaluable source for any aspiring comic book artist. Wow! Just wow!!! Thank you David Finch.
I love how I just received Framed Ink yesterday and today I see it mentioned in this video. Best coincidence!!!! The video is also incredible, on the spot and straight to the point! I love your content and your tutorials! Thank you!!!
I can’t thank you enough for how your tutorials really improved my drawing skills! David is a true legend by doing this all for free, just for the sake of teaching!
What’s immediately cool about this is it shows that your subjects can tell a complete story just through combinations of shapes. People use shape and geometry or math in writing or photography or any area of art. Even if you don’t have an idea or a story, what you make fit to the shapes will tell a story and you just have to decide if that fits the environment the work is going into in a way you like. As he said, it can be hard to conform a subject within a boundary, but one thing you can do if something feels off when you’re not using guidelines is to apply guidelines. You can do that directly on the page or within an app with an overlay. If you’re using paper for example, you could get some see through film sheets and draw on them with a dry erase marker. Also, 100 bullets although a bit dated is an awesome series even if you don’t like comics. Always thought it should be adapted to tv.
Wow! I'm just beginning to learn how to draw and have heard so many people talk about Composition, but had no idea what it meant. I've been looking for a means (I'm a 'visual' learner) on how to incorporate it. I want to thank you for your videos as they are done in a very helpful way. I can see how you are doing things and it helps me understand visually how things can be done. It helps me process the instructions better. I deeply appreciate your channel. I did go into Amazon and buy the two books you recommended. Again, thanks can't even begin to cover it.
I used to draw comic characters a lot while I was younger. I know the basics but watching these videos has improved my skills so much more. I'm working on my signature best piece but need a good idea for my design/ background/ characters
Man this is a great tutorial...and the way you used the tutorial to breakdown and explain what's happening in the examples that you showed in the end was ..... a pro educational art UA-camr move 🍀well done 🍀
I couldn't watch this video until now, and this subject was one of my requests. Thank you so much for providing these advices and skills! The examples used at the end of the video and resources for more detailed information were simply amazing!
Every lesson is pure gold....this channel is the top notch in comic book art learning...for an amateur like myself i cant ask for more. Thanks a lot for sharing so much knowledge in just a few minutes span.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. This was very helpful and fun to watch. I always get the most informative tutorials from David Finch. Such a simple idea but helps with creating dynamic art.
This guy can doodle better than I can draw. He's like "Okay, I'm just going to sketch a basic figure". By comparison, I would call that my masterpiece.
Thank you for this! I’ve been using the rule of thirds without actually understanding from comics but from film aspect (thinking of it as a camera). But now I understand what it is I’ve been doing instinctively...and now with this lesson in my arsenal I feel I can convey some story elements much better in sequential work!! 🍀Thank you again 🍀
This video should be a staple on anyone's list. Thank you for breaking composition down so simply. Hopefully we can get a few more expanding on the topic
Very cool break down. I will get those books to learn more advanced compositions but this was something yo use for rough drafts when I story broad. Thanks!
YES, THE WHOLE FRAMED SERIES!! Sorry for all caps, but the whole library is unmatched in IMHO, textbooks really. I wish I had them sooner in my own development. A great companion to your videos which I enjoy and learn a lot from as well :)
I love these "How to" videos. I'd like to see more of what you presented at the end by showing real examples and then deconstructing them back down to their basics. It felt rushed at the end doing it and I think the principles would affix more in the learner's mind if more time was spent there. This also will alleviate your stress of having to draw so many roughly rough sketches :) Thank you for taking time to create these.
Great solid foundation teaching. I always need to restudy the basics as I tend to get into wing it mode in my work more often then not without setting the foundation sometimes.
I think you inadvertently hit on the big problem with comics now , you said that the horizontal panel is used more often these days because it looks like a movie screen . There you have it . There are so many things comics can do better than any other medium , but they're not being done because creators aren't making comics , they're making movie pitches . The greats , the ones who lifted comics to an artform made comics because they wanted to make comics , not to get a movie or netflix deal .
Your so incredibly helpful to me during this time. I'm trying to get into art again and these videos are so helpful. Fortunately I have the two books you mentioned, time to pick them up👍
Great stuff!!! I used to do photography and the same rules apply...rule of thirds and leading lines...but the triangle and combining different shapes is going to be super helpful going forward.
It would be really interesting a page & panels composition video. How many panels are "too many" for each page? How much text should or shouldn't be and how to place them in the correct position without hiding the most important areas of the art? What is the criteria behind panels size? If you open a comicbook, there are two pages (left and right) how to make the composition of both pages to be in visual harmony? because when you draw a page you must have in mind that the reader will watch both of them together. A comicbook is not a secuence of individual illustrations, they must be connected and showed in an efficient way.
This seems like a real great video! Not gonna watch it yeat because I'm drawing along your caricatures video, but definitely will help me a lot with learning comics!

As a newbie to drawing techniques, I feel like I struck gold. Thanks David for the tutorial!
I’ve had “How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way” since I was a kid. It made my middle school doodles more interesting.

These Guidelines And Tips Are One Of The Best On The Tube In My Opinion. 👌☺️🎉
Excellent video. It's such a basic subject to understand but so easy to forget when composing a panel. Great job.
I have been doing my own stuff for so long I forget about the fundamentals, thanks for the reminders!
Thank you for this! I’ve been using the rule of thirds without actually understanding from comics but from film aspect (thinking of it as a camera).

Tell people to distill the composition from printed images using tracing paper overlays. So much to mention and learn about composition !!
Another golden video in the bank
