Awesome video Russ. I have a family owned and operated firewood business. We sell around 100 cords a year and 90% of it we deliver and stack. Thats what sets us apart from other firewood guys in my area. Most guys wanna dump and run and most of my clients are older or burning for recreational purposes and want no part of the labor. My unfair advantage is my wife and teenage children. We are blessed to be able to home school our children and they love to be outside working in the wood yard and helping with deliveries. It teaches them to have a good work ethic, keeps us all together and our business continues to grow.

I used to noodle a ton of rounds but I’ve gotten old and use a splitter I made for my excavator. The time it has saved me in sharpening chains and handling heavy rounds is amazing. You have a great crew all of my family has passed but I love cutting firewood. Take care and Happy New Year.

@ I understand what you’re saying, my dad used to fight me to run the splitter. As long as we got the wood cut I was happy. Our local electric company used to give me a bunch of wood. I started acquiring equipment to handle it. My dad loved my first skid steer, you just couldn’t get him out of it. Have a great year… John

I wouldn’t have the wood I have if it wasn’t for the two family farms and their help getting it so I’m fortunate for that!You just can’t depend on Tree Service alone in my area or you would go hungry😂 someday when I am closer to retirement and I get my equipment the way I want it. I might start thinking of it as more of a business. For now I’m just building a great relationship with my customer base! Have a great new year!

treat people right is the best ya can do for any service company.. my advantage since the mid 90's was i had enough propert for 6 to 10 tree services to dump there wood at my place. and most of the tree guys have been doing 3 to 5 tree jobs a week.. other thing is i live around farm country and what really got me going was i was taking down 1/2 mile line fence trees of popular in the late 90's.. 280 to 310 trees in a half mile and usually did 30 to 40 rows a year for farmers and that started bundle wood for campgrounds way back than.. now in texas so going to get something else a going with the blow down trees from last summers hurricane.. and yes it takes people to run a company now depending on big ya want to go with it.. i pay a guy to run the internet sales from mn for the pizza oven wood we do up there and for down here too. and just keeping guys working is another chore in itself. keep on doing what ya do
You said it all gramps and Kevin and you work together like a well oiled machine and you do treat customers right I just sold firewood and we had a mechanic that would take care of the splitters and the other stuff but I learned from him so wouldn't have to bother him all the time and the maple pieces I would of put on lift and chunked it down split a little at time takes no time when do it awhile but enjoy watching you and your crew get stuff done just keep up the good work my friend and be watching you guys for next video happy new year too all of you and be safe

I'm giving up on firewood sales for now. More important things in life that need my attention. Maybe I'll get kucky and the house search leads to a place with room for a woodyard of my own. Is a major advantage having the woodyard at home. Can work here and there when you can with rain showers, feeling yuck, etc. Can be working in the shop, rain stops so you can rush out to cut/split/stack, then run back inside if the rain picks up again. Maybe I'll find such a place in the nesr future.

It's not firewood related but similar drive. I work with my parents daily in ther company and over the last 25 to 30 years I have got to keep a lot of Rotary Engine cars on the road from supplying parts or just giving out technical help. That alone for me is the drive. You can still go to the dealer and get lots of parts if your dealer if your dealer is willing to help you with parts,however, they don't always have the tech support. Over the years, I have gotten to shake the hands of many from guys like me to those within Mazda who know who I am. There are even a few Mazda's in a museum in Germany that have parts from our little shop here, and that's just cool. As for firewood goes, its just a way for me to get outside and do something different and get away from the keyboard and other electronics.

Russ I can hear gramps hitting metal in the maple. I just would but it threw the wood 🪵 splitter same on the chainsaw chains.
He knew the metal was in the tree but still insisted on cutting the log just the same.

If you had a small splitter around you could flip it vertical and quarter those big rounds real quick. Noodling is a last resort.
I would have rolled them to the log lift but gramp wanted to play with his saw and have some fun so I just lent a hand to keep stuff out of his way.
How old is "gramps" ? Guy is married to that saw.

@@WilleysFirewood Thx BUTT how about keeping your gramps safe by use of professional protective gear. ? Those of us who use saws for harvesting firewood ( ( decades )know how fast accidents can get you, even with "all your years of chainsaw use without any protective gear". It's cheap insurance. BTW, we noodle all the time with large butts. Keep gramps alive. And, we usually do NOT cut in wet. JMNSHO
