    Is it me or did it look like the video on the KTM was bouncing around more? Maybe meaning a rougher ride then the YZ!

  • @cakejob69
    @cakejob69 8 років тому +8

    I'm really going back and forth between the KTM and YZ. At this point, I'm leaning towards the YZ because there are leftovers YZ's for about $2500 less than a new KTM. Since the 250xcf is the hot, sexy bike recently all the dealers want MSRP. That's a lot of cake.

    Hmm, return8ng to some of these older vids. Really wanting a 4 stroke 250. I gotta say, the majority of the time in beginning (up to the slip up on ktm) you were definitely ahead on the Yamaha and more smooth.

  • @sabanite08
    @sabanite08 7 років тому +23

    both bikes are great but you definitely lean KTM in your views. The simple fact is the KTM DID NOT perform as well on the trail when being ridden by the same rider. You try and make excuses to even them out in the end. You have very good, informative videos, i just wish you didn't lean so hard KTM while trying to put on a neutral face. Great work

    Big question is: if both bikes can do the same thing, and arguably the Yamaha's better gearing preventing stalls..... how much more are you paying for the KTM than the Yamaha? also, the question of longevity. Yamaha is really making some good, reliable, long lasting four strokes these days.

    I always feel like my 1988 dually is flying down the highway faster than I am actually going. Noise, vibration or mental discomfort can all lead to perceptions that may not be accurate.
    I usually find helmet cams dull to watch but I watched a Graham Jarvis POV the other day and I noticed something I think is important. His camera was ROCK STEADY as it was bolted to a wall. There he was ripping of trails and bashing thru the technical sections and his never seemed to move. Going fast means be able to look ahead and actually SEE and evaluate the trail and set yourself up with the right line.
    As a part of these comparison videos it might be interesting to evaluate how steady your head is on one bike versus the other. I think it might also prove useful in evaluating your riding and make improvements. You ride really nice arrows. Helmet cam footage might help improve the Indian ;)

    Good point at the end there, power isn't as big a deal anymore with the new technology bikes have now days, in fact I think to much power on technical shit is a hindrance....to much power equals not enough traction sometimes!

    In your video riding the same trail on your 300 you reached a personal best of 4:52 but you had previously only had a time of 5:17.
    Seeing the times for the 250's being so close to your results of the 300 on the same trail, shows your speed is very consistent regardless of the bike. I would suggest you try the same trail again on a 150xc or 200xcw. You may be surprised by the result, I think the time would likely end up at about the same 5:10-5:20 range.

    I’ve been stuck between these 2 bikes for a few months for my 2020 riding season. What it came down to was the ability to get a tag for the bike and keep it from being pulled in GA. What some people fail to realize is you can get a tag though dirtlegal or similar services, but the tag can be pulled at any time by the state when someone notices the title reads “off-road vehicle”. KTM’s title reads “motorcycle” regardless of the bike being shipped as street legal & it’s up to the dealer you (or the person before you) to keep motorcycle on the title.
    I say this because we already have 300 exe that is tagged and has been for well over a year and another friend, using the same service, had his DRZ E’s tag pulled after 2 weeks. I recently spoke to the owner of a 2018 YZ 450FX that was plated and converted to a Sumo, same thing. This part was the deal breaker for me because I wanted the Yamaha. I go trail to trail & ride dirt roads a lot so putting the money into a Baja kit & plating the bike would be worth it for me. Some people do get lucky and never have a problem, but I’m not one of them.

    I totally agree. I'm a big guy. I had a 09 kx250 , put a 54 tooth sprocket on the rear and I raced some hare scrambles with it. I was weighing about 280LBS and the 250 took me anywhere I wanted to go.

      qynsar now was the kx a four stroke or a two stroke? is it a kx250f? or a kx250? because if its a 2 stroke, that's a different story.

    • @qynsar
      @qynsar 7 років тому

      Jakelols Gaming 2009 kx250f. I think Kawi stopped making 2 strokes in 03 maybe. Anyway, yes it was a four stroke. Motocross bike but it worked well in the woods. The only think I didn't like about it was the engine braking. It would have been great with a slipper clutch. Also the valves needed adjusting right from the factory. I took it to the dealer I bought it from and paid them $75 to adjust the valves. It still wouldn't start easily. so I finally learned how to do it myself. After it had the correct size shims it would start first kick. Was a great bike.

    I like your side by side comparisons. It’s easy to see the different characteristics of the bikes, in the different types of terrain you ride. 👍 I think I’d prefer the lower gearing of the YZ in this case, but I am an ogre so both would probably handle lighter and better than my current bike...

    These side by side videos are cool! Interesting though, compared to your other videos of these two bikes, the Yamaha looked a bit more at home on this trail. It was hard to hear, but there was a more consistent 'on throttle' sound and by observation, looked a bit more compliant to your input. The KTM looked a bit stubborn but got its manners at the end, after you had a few step offs, and put the throttle on a little more- then it covered the ground in a hurry!
    I would say that so far, your reviews of these two bikes have been consistent. Fantastic job! Keep it up!

    Awesome, I love the side by side view. Last year I was tossing up between the WR250F (the Aussie spec is very similar to your YZ250FX) and the 300EXC (same as the XCW I think). I ended up with the WR250F because yamaha; it's my 3rd WR but I still have a bit of 2 stroke KTM remorse. I'd love to request a side by side with the 300 :)

    I am a KTM guy, but thought the Yamaha took the prize here. Geared better and didnt flame out or loose traction for the entire run... KTM puts some sweet components on their sleds, but most riders will never be good enough to use the last 30% of them. I'm starting to come around to RIDEABILITY = greater fun with fewer injuries, particularly at 50+ and a bum shoulder.

    Awesome video man. I live in the Appalachian mountains and ride on my farm a lot, there's some fairly steep Hhills and they never look that bad on the gopro which is a shame. I can tell that's a pretty good trail you hit up there, good riding.
    looking at these two bikes so far on your channel (and me being a serious rookie at 26 lol) I'd have to say the yamaha gets a slight nod for the gearing. love ktm though, next year hopefully I'll jump from my yz125 to one off the 250 or 300 2t's from them or a gasgas.
    thanks for the videos man!

    Lead in from the drone, nice touch. Did you fly the drone, or program a gps flight plan? Can't wait to see more drone footage to!!
    I have a friend that will be selling his yz450f soon, he is true blue(so no ktm, lol), my fingers are crossed a local can let you borrow a yz250x for a review, and you can do a 250x vs a yz450fx on your test track. he is a trail and dune rider, sometimes the yz450f in techy terrain is tough. Estart will be nice too :)

    Hey :) I think these runs are very different :p i think it looks like you are hitting alot of rocks and stuff on the ktm and going smooth on the yamaha, so in my eyes I think you did a decent/great run on yamaha but had a "worse" run on the ktm. Maybe you were more tired when you rode the ktm? did you ride the yamaha first ? :) Might just be that i was looking at the ktm side everytime you hit a rock but i think it's a small chance for that :p

      I already had a 2 stroke. I had never ridden a 250 4 stroke, so we bought 2 of them to compare against each other. I'll get around to the 250x eventually.

      +Opferman Motors Dirtbiking I know why top enduro riders still use 2 strokes. I wanted Kyle's specific insight as to why HE thinks HE goes faster on the 300.
      Thank you for your response OMD.

    dumb question, but why does it look like there's way more rocks and stuff on the trail for the Yamaha? different cameras? make it pick it up better? different times of day or different day? it was just bothering me. had to know lol

    • @DirtBikeChannel

      The sun was out during the run with the Yami. Then about 20-30 min later I rode the KTM with the sun behind the clouds. That is the only difference.

    You mentioned the KTM "feels" faster to ride , I wonder if that is why the mistakes happen on it because things feel like their coming at you faster ?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому +1

      No because it was during the slow sections that I made mistakes. Probably because of the little bit higher gearing in 1st gear.

    • @superman242242
      @superman242242 8 років тому

      Oh okay gotcha ! It's really awesome that these bikes are so closely matched , It really gives riders the choice to just pick whichever bike they feel speaks to them without really sacrificing serious performance

    Kyle, thinking buying a 2017 ktm 250 xc f, just wondering if is not too stall prone? assuming is the same as the 2016 you own, what do you think? thanks

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      I guess that depends on what you are used to. I really, really like the 250 XC-F. Yeah, it much easier to stall than a 2 stroke, but you can get used to it for sure.

    Good after seeing the third time video, I noticed that you're working more on KTM, more movement of arms, and less on yamaha, I think yamaha better absorbs the bad floor and is more stable and has more traction, perhaps extra weight help . KTM seems to be more bouncy and hard. hug.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      Interesting observation. I don't feel that way when I'm riding though...

    • @philluken5640
      @philluken5640 7 років тому

      Also, it appears like the footage is "shakier" on the KTM, is that maybe a reflection of the suspension being smoother on the Yami?, or just working less with body/head movements?

  • @ManAndMachine23
    @ManAndMachine23 8 років тому

    Yamaha probably has better suspension stock,The ktm suffered a bit compared to blue,hence the mistakes on the orange,I'm just speculating.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      I felt better on the KTM. Gearing on this trail favors the Yami and that might have been the difference maker for me.

    • @DirtBikeChannel

      The mistake was due to gearing and not committing. It wasn't because of the weight this time.

On Christmas I'm getting my first bike which was going to be a Ktm free ride 250r ( I am quiet a good rider 😎but have never had one of my own) anyway it was a bit to expensive because I wanted something else to but anyway do you know what bike I should get I am 14 and 820mm tall ( live in Australia ) don't know inches. But can you please reply also I am now thinking about Honda or a Yamaha so can you just give me a idea of what you think would be good for someone like me. Thanks for inspiring me to get a bike and I love your gear reviews.

    On my 06 Yamaha yz85 I have a problem where the bike will stall out if I put the bike into first without having the bike rolling. If my bike is standing still and I put it into first the bike will stall out immediately. So the bike needs to be rolling and then I can put it into 1st. Thank you if you know a solution to this problem!

      Your clutch wire is probably worn out or your clutch spring are old.

    • @loopduplicate
      @loopduplicate 8 років тому

      My guess is that your bike is on the verge of stalling when it's in neutral. When you put it in gear, the wet clutch puts just a slight load on the motor which makes it stall.
