- Welcome to episode #96! Today I grab my rod, my dog and my camping gear and head out on a fishing adventure. The shad are in thick! So I had the crazy idea of catching some for a surprisingly tasty meal.

Hey Jordan, it is cool how you are driving, fishing, hunting, foraging, floating, hiking all over our beautiful PNW. Western and eastern Oregon and Washington are so different. Your channel is showing people all over the country (world) what a beautiful playground we have here in the PNW.

It's pretty cool to see shad so abundant in the Columbia. You mentioned they were native on the east coast, but unfortunately, the CT river and surrounding shad fisheries have been closed for many years. Hopefully one day they will recover and be fishable again!
Seth Green threw just 10,000 of em into the Sacramento River in the 1860's or so, and they have not only thrived, and spread, but also don't really displace or out compete basin native species! Kind of an amazing fish, and fish story! Hopefully yer local waterways will recover and you'll get to chase the lil bastards again! We are spoiled by literal millions these days!

Shad... Well...... They're RAD! Lol!
I like to leave the tag end long enough to pinch yer lead on at the bottom. The boulder garden below the dam will eat the lead, and the shorter distance it has to slide makes it easier to "pop" yer lead off if you fish a softer rod tip.
Shad goo is the best ever fish sauce! Cull yer first, and keep it by yer side so you can smear yer darts with the shad slime.
Shad scales are bad to the bone! A guy that fishes the OR side deadline throws a Halloween party and he dresses up as a character from WaterWorld. The Kevin Costner movie... And his ENTIRE giddy-up is basically made from dried Shad scales! It's super sweet!

Great video as always. I wanna see a video, where you pick a river and start at one end of it and then proceed to fish your way down until the river ends. camping, cook and catch, and info. all the way until you get to where the river ends. another movie style video if you will. multi day trip. For example, it doesn't have to be to this scale but start the Columbia up in Colville, WA until it dumps into the pacific. That would be amazing
I use a brillow pad to scrub the scales off my fish. It works like a charm.

Hey Jordan it would be cool if you mentioned the rod & reel setups brands and miscellaneous tackle you are using in your videos. Keep up the awesome contents and how about a tour of your new rig setup.
As you said, shad are essentially herring. So any of the bazillion recipes out there for herring would be good. IF you like herring, not something Americans go for much. I love pickled herring though!! That bit of Norwegian in me, I guess.

Fished shad for half my life now and have never hooked a salmon doing it. Seen a bunch of people do it, i guess i just never got lucky 😅. Either way what a treat to fight and catch such beautiful fish!

The trick with the Tomatoe sauce Shad is cook in slow cooker. Bones become edible but to me, tastes terrible. Shad goes well will Dill, Citrus, Onion, Garlic etc. My favorite way is to fillet off the back bone, skin and cut out the blood line. Pressure can with Lime Basil, a slice of Lemon, a hot Chile pepper, slice of Onion, clove of garlic and some dill. 10 pounds of pressure for 100 minutes. Tastes great as is. Or smoke then can. Smoked Shad is amazing but I suck at smoking so I don't mess with it.

I meant a asian couple shad fishing that liked to fry up the eggs sacks, we tried it and not so much. And I guess some people like to pickle shad like Herring. Those are great dog breeds.

Try it in a instapot.... cook for 1.5 hours and the bones are no longer a problem. It's just like sardines in a can. Use your recipe you just made and eat it over rice

just so you know false morels (calf brain) are just as edible as morels. just get'em fully cooked.
Theres many species of false morels. Gyromita Esculenta are a deadly false morel.
