  • This nostalgic walk around Glodwick (Part One) is reminiscent of other old codgers who regularly traipse around Yorkshire villages. This is a return to their roots for old friends who grew up together and concentrates on the Glodwick Road and Park Road area of Oldham

I grew up on Netherhey Street born in 1963. All my immediate family have died now. I am the last surviving child. I found this sad and nostalgic at the same time. Alexandra Park was our playground and the fields between Glodwick and Fitton Hill. Happy days, so many memories of pals and building dens, playing tennis near the old cricket ground. The Wakes fair near Alex school. Thank you gents. It took me back.

@@laticsfan You mentioned the “Ordy’ my Dad’s local run by Harry in the 60s and 70s. Owd Kitts was called the Park Inn at one time, and then went back to its original name, which was not to be confused with the Park Hotel. The Park Hotel, as your mate pointed out, was the big boozer, on the corner of Woodstock Street, at the bottom of Park Road.

Wicked guys! I’m from Derker and, my Uncle and brother lived on Glodwick Road. Mum used to work at Ferranti’s on Barry Street. Grandfather was a Lamplighter for Oldham Borough Council, and lived on Tennyson Street. I served an apprenticeship at Dronsfields, on Ashton Road. Fond memories. I’m 72 now. Thanks for the memories.

Haven't visited Oldham since 78-79 but from videos it's changed an awful lot. Alenxandra Park seems much like it did, that was the posh part, a fine Victorian Park.

There used to be two houses at the bottom of Warren Lane, facing St Albans School, the old street name was Flowery Bank. One of the houses had lots of greenhouses and was quite famous in the area for producing fruit, veg and bedding out plants. Has anyone got any old photographs or stories they could send me? It was my grandparents house

Nice one lads! I was brought up on Nugget Street (born 1948) and went to Alexandra Infants and Juniors before moving on to Clarksfield Sec Mod. A mate of mine, Richard Green, always caught the bus from t' corner of Roundthorn Road up to Owd Kitts for 1d - lazy bugger. I spent many happy hours riding my bike on t' "wall o' death" next to that old works. Did you ever crawl up the concrete 'tunnel' that ran up the hill to the old chimney? The quarry on t' Lows, The Meadows and Gloddick Baths were my playgrounds if I wasn't muckin' about round Lees n Wrigleys cotton mill. Some good memories.
Now I'm living in the Rhondda and spend my days limping round the Brecon Beacons.
Looking forward to Part 2 - it you can give the train set a rest for a bit. Thanks boys!
