- a lovely walk around Glodwick Oldham. Its not full of historical fact but its full of historical past in oldham. Glodwick is a real historical hot spot.
I’ve grown up in that church since when I was a child and honestly it was a sight to behold, It’s such a shame it was set on fire. We had a Polish family right in front our house and they used to tell my uncle and parents about the war and when they immigrated in 40s,such good times.
I know. I'm desperate to get inside to look at the history x
I was born and raised in the last house at the top of Latimer Street. The building that you identify on the corner of Latimer and Pitt Street was a cigarette distribution warehouse up until the early 80s or around that time. The Jewellery shop at the end of Latimer Street was a cobblers shoe repair business belonging to a guy named Ken Chadderton before it became a Laundrette in the 70s. Many happy memories of Glodwick.

My family (before I was born) lived on Marlborough Street on Glodwick in the 1950s. The houses built there were poorly built mill worker's houses and by the 1950s had become slums and were at one time earmarked for demolition. My dad, born on Limeside but grew up on Harmony Street, Glodwick, told me of the night he was laying in bed. It was Christmas Eve and he was awake around midnight when there was a flash in the sky and then the whole house shook. A doodlebug (a V2 flying bomb) had dropped on Abbeyhills Rd, killing 32 (?) people, one of them my dad's classmate. Glodwick has always been home to the immigrant population, at first it was the Irish fleeing the famine, then the Poles and Ukraine's fleeing the Nazis. During the 60s and 70s there was a large Afro Caribean population, some of whom were my classmates at Breeze Hill then the Bangladeshi/Pakistani people, brought over on the false pretence of mill jobs in the already dying (if not dead) textile industry. My grandmother lived on Waterloo Street until her death in the early 1970s and even then, the houses still had outside toilets, where one block of lavatories served many houses.
Wow greatemiries Eric thanks. There where similar houses and toilet situations on St Mary's aswell I believe. I don't remember houses sharing toilets outside but I do remember outside toilets in fact my house now has a toilet outside although it's not used 😂
My friend lives in the houses that were built after the bomb, I didn't know so many people were killed.
I had a paper round at the corner shop on Waterloo Street and Hardy street. I remember Clive who ran it.
I went to St.Albans School , was knocked down long ago , we used to hang out in the park and on the Lows at dinnertime , really enjoyed my schooldays there
My mother use to clean St Marks church for £8 a month. She's 88 and I was just watching this with her. Thanks!

I was born in glodwick and lived there until 1977. We had neighbours fro. Ukraine, Poland, Pakistan, west indies, so many other places. I've only ever known it to be multi cultural. I loved that
5.46 is Madina Mosque which is on Waterloo Street/Bismark Street, it used to be a West Indian Church at one point. A beautiful building and well maintained. This building has been renovated at least 3 times and most recently a few years ago, money was donated by the community for the renovation. The building next to it was a warehouse selling furniture in the 80s and a factory before that. It is now an extention to Madina Mosque and gas undergone extensive renovation with the help of the community. Today it is used mainly by Asian women for educational and community activities. It is also used as a place for mourning for women when there is a bereavement in the community. It also provides food to female guests who travel to Glodwick from out of town when a bereavement in the community takes place.
The church on Waterloo Street has a Sunday school attached to it (yes, it was used a polling station briefly). It was purchased by Mr Khan and family who had a hardware shop on Waterloo Street, they needed extra space as the family business expanded. People prefer to go there for their DIY goods than B&Q due to it's competive prices and supporting local businesses. It's a place of choice for local builders for this reason too.
The Church of St. Marks was purchased by a local business man recently as it was left abandoned for many years.
The only functioning church in Glodwick is Bethall Church which is at the bottom of Waterloo Street (towards Oldham Town centre). Bethnal Church only opens it's doors on Sundays. The congregation is mainly young Europeans who live outside of Glodwick.
World Wide shopping centre used to be 'Kwik-Save'. Before it was Kwik-Save it was the 'Co-op supermarket' and before that the butchers section of World Wide supermarket was an 'Indian Take-Away' called 'Glodwick Tandoori' in the mid 70s, owned by a Bangladeshi gentleman. It was the first ever Indian take-away in Oldham. Those days the local caucasian inhabitants didn't know what a curry was, the owner (bless him) then converted it to a chippy, during that period another wave of riots took place (probably the first race riots), when the NF marched through Goodwick, smashing window, this was when Edward Heath came into power. The first ever Indian take-away in Oldham was at the top of Waterloo Street, called "Priory Restaurant" owned by a Bangladeshi gentleman.
Yes, Glodwick did have a Polish and Ukrainian population until the mid 90's the last of whom was an old lady who passed away in the mid 90's, she lived off Park Road. Until then the old Ukrainian lady used to have a log burner and would scour the streets of Glodwick looking for planks of wood from the derelict factories in and around the area, there was one behind Sickle Street. The Ukrainian lady never used electric or central heating.
After the Polish and Ukrainian, then came the West Indians, later the Pakistanis (mainly Kashmiri's) and Bangladeshis. (not many Indian families resided in Glodwick.) there are very few west Indians left in Glodwick these days.
Believe it or not, Glodwick is a very safe area thesedays, there is hardly any robberies, luckily! You will notice people leaving their front doors open, while neighbours and friends pop in and out of houses. Everyone knows everyone. Glodwick has come a long way since the riots. Although it may look run down, Glodwick has very wealthy and successful people i.e. large restaurants owners, factory owners, chemists etc, there is also a large population who have respectful jobs, professions such as doctors, surgeons, lawyers, engineers, teachers etc. They choose to live in Glodwick because of the community spirit, or they have an elderly member of the family who prefers to live there and the safety it provides.
This is why you will see loft conversions so to accommodate growing tight knit families.
You didn't see the community spirit due to the lockdown.
Yes, most houses are from the late 1800s like you said Sarah. Some of the terrace houses, you can still walk through the little holes from one end of the block to the other through the attic.
Sarah, you only touched on the edge of Glodwick. There is also the old red bridge, the centre of Glodwick, areas around Alexandra Park, Queens Road etc, not all are old peopled homes, many are privately owned. In the 90's they were being solf for around £80k. It is a safe place as you saw yourself. Youngester who are third generation Asians are very respectful.
Yes, the Oldham riots gave Glodwick a bad name. Which was due to some locals being provoked by football hooligans from Stoke City and BNP activist from outside stirring up trouble. It actually started on the edge of Glodwick near Clarksfield, between two children on the street arguing, one of the child's mother (Pakistani) who was pregnant got attacked by the other child's mother, who later called her husband/boyfriend and his mates to attack the family. As mad as it sounds this is how it started. But the media didn't cover this story properly, they only covered what happened after, which was the riots. The day before riots the BMP members had a meeting at the "Live and Let Live" pub on Goodwick Road, which was attacked by a small group of Asian youths once they learnt that the BMP were planning an attack on the homes of Asian families from the pub. The BMP members were mainly Stoke City fans (hooligans) they later fled and left the locals from Alt Estate, St.Marys, Limeside and Primrose Bank to continue the fight. This sparked what then became The Oldham Riots which went on for 3 consecutive nights in May 2001.
Anyway, that's another story in itself. The 'Live and Let Live' pub is now a nursery school.
Hi a few weeks back I listened to a brilliant podcast about the riots people describing first hand what happened and why and your spot on about the causes. You have such a fantastic knowledge of the area thanks for commenting. @@SarahsUKGraveyard Hi Sarah, around the red bridge is a small power stations. Regarding the blue bridge that goes over the dual carriage way, this is being ripped apart, unfortunately. There was another steel/wooden bridge near towards what is Matalan, this was removed in the 80's it had planks of wood missing on the bridge, and those crossing the bridge could see the train travel under their feet.
There are some really nice building in Glodwick that were demolished in the 90, the old Greenhill Grammar School, the old Alexandra Park Junior School, the only concurved railway House which sat at the bottom of Park Road.
If you do cover the Bethel Church you might want to go on a Sunday morning, they may even let you in to film inside. Heading up towards Oldham Town, there are interesting stone walls, the architecture is pretty impressive for time it was built.
I was watching one of your videos from Chadderton Cemetery, some that date that back to the 1800s were residents of Glodwick. You will find street names in Glodwick engraved into the tombs stones /memorial. There are quiet a few graves from the commonwealth wars period too and foreigns that were bought into Oldham during the slave period.

St Marks church on Waterloo street had a Sunday school hall, a kitchen and dining hall, and a very large hall with a wooden dance floor and a stage . I used to go to the Sunday school there in the late 60’ and then in the early 70’s brownies and girl guides. Like you said it’s no longer used as a church as it’s a predominately Muslim area and attendance declined in the early 80’s. From what l remember the church inside was beautiful but can only imagine what it’s like now . The side building on the side of Glodwick rd was a school in the 1800’ to the early 1900’s for millworkers children as in the 1800’s in early 1900’s children only went to school up to the age of 12 then went into the mill to work. Oldham had the most cotton mills in the country at 455 at its peak and known as king cotton. Park Rd and Queens rd facing the park that’s where the lawyer doctors etc lived and this continued up to the late 1980’s when many were purchased to become elderly care homes.

Bit late in coming but the building with the lights was a Methodist church and Sunday school next door used to be joined
by a bridge over the alleyway between them .West Indian community took it over later with rollicking services and singing.Like most now a mosque .Born round the corner at 29 Brompton st left in 79 been back once doubt I’ll be back
i lived on roundthorn rd my family own two coal mines in glodwick and lees on was on the glodwick lows i have lots of family history dating back to 1600s

Hi Sarah - many thanks for sharing this vlog. I was brought up on the bottom end of Nugget Street in the 50s and 60s so know the area well - when there were many more houses and less green patches. I believe the chapel on Waterloo Street, and round the corner, was a Wesleyan Methodist chapel and I was a member of the Lifeboys and Boys' Brigade there in the 50s. St. Marks used to have a great Youth Club and behind the building with the fire damage was where they held Saturday Night Dances with live bands in the 60s. You brought back some happy memories. It was Bismarck st Methodist boys brigade 11th company ,I went to lifebouys and boys in the 60s ,they also had s Sunday school and church hall that the boys brigade used
Yes it was a Methodist Church, I lived nearby and remember going to the sunday school as a child.
Hi the building at the church you say had a fire was full of old grumpy men in there at there billiards rooms. Which is all behind the stage in the big hall at the back it was originally the vicars house before he moved near the park
I used to Iive in Glodwick in the early 60s on Norbury st before the houses were demolished, I used to go to Sunday school at St Marks church.

The church is St Mark’s. Or should I say was.. The population of Waterloo street was mainly Ukraine and there were Polish too. Those were the days. I was born there in 1963.

Hi. The first building. Co- op. Was in fact for many years used by Watson's stores carpets for stitching and warehouse, the second in Latimer st was in the sixties a cigarette wholesale place. The halls at st Mark's were scout rooms and Scottish pipe band practice. I used to ring the bells there. Lol at the side of the rooms to the left is the place park cake Baker used to wash currents and cherries 🍒 I lived in savoy St and can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about glodwick, including Marlborough st. In kittymans the reggae club. I played there. Before going to Marmaduke Street club , which kittymans moved to years later lol 😮 realy. Anything you want to know. Just ask.

St Mark's. My Father AD Holden and His Twin Brother TD Holden were Christened in the Church 1922 100 Years ago !!!!!!!!! They were born in Latimer Street and also lived in Pitt Street.They attended Waterloo School from 1925 and My Grandfather's Funeral service took place at St. Mark's in 1925.He worked at Glodwick Road Station. @@SarahsUKGraveyard My Father Albert Dyson Holden is interred at Christ Church Denshaw 2015 and Uncle Tom at Greenacre's Cemetery.My Grandfather who Died in 1925 is buried at Moorside, St.Thomas My Great Grandfather also,He was the Village Bobby at Moorside.
Sarah I've been in the church they also used the front part selling charity shop items .bedding clothes all sorts of stuff . also a food bank before the fire .such a shame 🥺 but thanks for this .I'd love you to go now see what it looks like ,

The building at 4 mins with the lights on used to be a Gospel Church in 70s/80's, also if you go round the side of Worldwide foods, (next to the school) there is another building with many foundation stones on. Great vid. Took me back. I grew up facing worldwide.

I used to go to Guides at the Baptist Church. Run by Sister Pat I think she was the minister there. That was about 1977 ish. Lived on Cranberry Street, which came under Glodwick but was right on the edge, really should have been Clarksfield area. Left tge area in 1982 (was born & brought up in Werneth until 1976) so nice to see what it looks like now, thank you for your video.

Hi Sarah, so glad that I stumbled on your brilliant videos, I’m a Yonner too and recognise so many places that you have visited. It’s funny how when you are visiting a foreign land (Rome or Venice or Failsworth for instance), your eyes pop out of your head but when home you don’t give your hometown a second glance. Dare I suggest that you invest in a lavalier microphone with a deadcat for the wind noise. They make a big difference, honestly. Keep em coming.
Hello Albert yes thank you for the suggestion I've been wanting to buy a microphone and muffler for ages but had no clue which is the best to get. I'll look into it and yes your right about not noticing your home town but you know I've been to Rome and Venice and dallas and Albania some great places amongst countless others but I enjoy sight seeing oldjam more especially when I uncover forgotten or not so well known history 😁
Top of Waterloo St was St Marks primary/junior school
I’ve rung the bells at the church in March 2019. The bells were removed in November 2020 I think when It closed later on in 2019

@@SarahsUKGraveyard the bells are stored at John Taylor & Co bell foundry in Loughborough at the moment. The ringers in Rochdale are planning to have the bells installed at St Chads in Rochdale (the church next to town hall) in the future.
The Glodwick bells are a ring of 8 and they sounded really nice but were rarely rung at all due to shortage of ringers. The bells in Rochdale are also a ring of 8, their heavier and really hard to ring and their condition is deteriorating.
I’ve witnessed incidents with the Rochdale bells with things coming apart while rung. I also snapped the rope on the largest bell when I visited Glodwick church, those ropes were probably installed in the 80s or 90s and they were yellowed
My mum used to ring the bells at oldham when cannon kirkman was there she said she'd go back and do it again but everything's closed now isn't it

There also used to be a large Ukrainian population in Glodwick who founded the Ukrainian Church of St. Volodymyr on Onchan Avenue, back in the late 1940s.

Two bedroom terrace houses in Oldham and other working class towns were deemed to be slums and demolished. Similar houses in London are referred to as cottages and mews houses and sold for millions! Such a shame that this town has lost so much of its history.
It is I've been saying the same for years. glodwick has maintained it's historic buildings. All are still used not necessarily for the same purpose they were initially built for. Glodwick was built in 1870s I believe

Glodwick on a good day looks like Kensington then 😂. The place was never pretty but now it is vile.
Great video my brother who died about 3 years ago used to live on Preston Street over a shop in the 80s it was a horrible place and he only had a two bar gas fire propped up to boil a kettle and cook as the landlord would not mend the cooker in the place and you could be eating your tea and the landlord would just walk in with his friends and go out the other door even the mice left as it was that bad lol🤣😂

My Dad & Uncle purchased the old Vicarage on Alexandra road in 1990, i would be happy to give you a tour of it if you like. Plenty of old artefacts still left intact.

Possibly but it would habe to be decommissioned first. The church did the same with the mosque in Turkey where they changed it from a mosque to a church for hundreds of years and now it's back to a mosque. It's fairly common place across the world. What ever they do with it I hope it doesn't get knocked down 😁
The families of both my parents are from Oldham. Now it all seems so neglected. Northern Powerhouse indeed. Whitehall's many lies and deceptions. What a shame.

Re St Marks Church, it closed a few years ago, and I took some video and photos just before it closed and gave them to the temporary minister who officiated there at the time. He said he would pass them to the CofE church authority. My sister and I were christened in that Church and my parents married there. I believe my two uncles went to the associated school. He is 85 now but still has a picture of the kids in the school.

@@SarahsUKGraveyard My father was in the choir at St Marks before the second world war and was also a teacher at the Pitt St Baptist Sunday school. I do not think he would recognise Glodwick nowadays .
@doughill1945 I bet he would be shocked at what's happened to Oldham, all the beautiful buildings gone. Glodwick however still holds onto many beautiful buildings and of course the park cxxx

Thank you, Sarah, I appreciate the buildings and the history but the rubbish strewn around lets the area down. I think it's a real shame that some churches are just left to decay. I loved the original gates and stonework on St Marks. 💕
St Marks is gorgeous oldham has a lot of nice churches. My favourites are the ones with graves as I like to know about people that came before us
I use to live in Glodwick up until 2006. The rubbish strewn around is because the council does not have street sweepers/litter pickers like in the area I now live in. Up until the pandemic there was a weekly (Sunday) clean up where the local community use to clean the area around their homes as well as a street group clean the street & alley ways. The council has neglected the area & only employed litter pickers for only one calender year then went back to not doing nothing. People are not use to complaining to the council over there which they need to.
They need to do more
My mother and father were married at saint marks in 1948 ,I was Christian there in 1952 ,if you get in touch with park cake on Ashton road they will tell you they had a bakery near Saint mark's church ,my mother used to work there

Yes that's true, it was a fruit washing plant, I lived behind it in the 60,s. The late David Sinclair was the plant boss, his family still live in the area.

The church at 4 minutes was Trinity Methodist church and the building next to it just along Bismark Street (now the cultural centre) was the Sunday School. The shop on the corner used to be a butcher's.

Just after the War there was also an Austrian Catholic Centre at 107 Abbey Hills Rd, as many Austrian people -like my Mum- were settled here in the 1950s.

@@SarahsUKGraveyard It's only an ordinary terraced house now. I've found out that it was open for 12 years and was run by nuns, but I'm not sure of the exact dates.

The cash and carry on Pitt St was cigarette manufacturing building as I can remember in early 80s
What cigarettes did they make?

The Cash & Carry on Pitt street was an Old CO-OP store. It is my Dads shop we bought it when it was the co-op.
So I was right then?
It used to be a tobacco cash and carry when I was a kid in the 60,s. I lived at 21 Pitt Street, demolished now. And the od Co op on Retford Street belonged to Watson stores for years as a carpet warehouse. The old methodist Church on bismarck st was where I attended the boys brigade.

We have two Ukrainian Churches in Oldham, the Eastern Orthodox one you show in your video and the Ukrainian Catholic one near Tescos.
I was really happy to find it.
Who remembers father o leary and the bus he owned and drove? He used to take our school on many trips! ( St annes greenacres rd school) also there used to be a kwik save on the main rd and our school went to the baths on a wednesday.
The kwik save is now the worldwide shop

Oldham has or had a massive Ukrainian community in years gone by. There are a lot if Ukrainian graves in greenacres cemetery

Just looked up on a few old maps. The building at the 4 min mark was a church.
I didnt know that st Mark's was closed. I remember a few years ago it was used as a polling station.

@@SarahsUKGraveyard you're welcome. I got interested in historical building in oldham years ago, I tried to find out a what was built on a specific bit of land. Sadly I never found out but I gained a lot of old oldham maps.

@@SarahsUKGraveyard on Hollins road next to the Falcons pub there is a car park. In the 90s that car park used to be something weird, it was this concrete thing. My mother said it was a car park but if you parked in there you wouldn't get it out.

St marks church will be another listed building Oldham council will just let rot so bad they will demolish it, so another part of oldhams history culture and heritage disappears into oblivion

help me here, please in 1976 I worked at a school with my late father which was based further down at the back of the Abbey hills road what was the name of that school it was a catholic secondary school at the back area the school,i was there back in about 1983 and I took a trip up there in 1992 and whilst having a quick pint at the pub i asked what to one of the locals what happened the school, I was informed it had been demolished my god I thought. and two days ago I took another trip up to Glodwick and went down to The Abbey ~Hills Road and it still looks the same but the school area is now new houses,can you help me the name of that school yours Bob Kincaid

Oh Brill. Do you go to the Glodwick Chippy? It's my favourite food place in Oldham. The fellas there always make me a special meal. I went the other day and they were closed but I asked a local fella and he told me they were shut for Ramadan 😁

I can tell you many stories and show you examples not too different from yours sir
But we don't say "no go areas" we say areas who haven't embraced a colourful difference
Yet we continue to strive and create a better and prosperous future
Glodwick and oldham is NOT a "No Go Area !" No matter what creed colour or religion
I hope the vile creatures who scarred you we're caught and punished for the cowardly act you and your family endured
@@5e34nut then again I'd say the same thing about Limeside , Sholver and Alt, I can only go off my personal experiences and would be very attentive when going into these area's videoing, certain people have the wrong impression, and believe your up to no good, sadly this is the world we live in.
