I wish Oldham kept its heritage in my opinion, it’s better to look at a mill and a chimney that’s been there for 100 odd years than to look at a plan for a new supermarket
This poor little town has lost all of its heritage 😢
Absolutely brilliant, yet so very sad, as a 66yr old tatty ed born and bread, strong inth arm and thick inth ed, I have had to stand and watch local council past and present dismantling our heritage and culture, turning a relatively poor but thriving town into a concrete jungle and kebab shop capital of the north west. Brought a tear to my eye watching this, the memories of what once was.. to old and I’ll to escape now the town as been renamed by most now lovingly known as oldhamistan. RIP the Oldham that was. So sad.
just reminded me of when i was a kid in the 80s my Grandparents lived on Fitton Hill, they had a milkman everyone called tatty ead....
Lol dont invade over 100 countries next time gramps 😢
I’m proud of heritage and country and would never change it for a far off land but that’s just me.😉
@@Angrychan all countries invade other countries, some are better than others and the English and British revival will restore the cities lost in war!!!
It is coming
Oldham since the 1980's has had no town planning... So many lovely buildings knocked down, to be replaced by lifeless concrete and brick square boxes...
Just seeing this for the first time. My first 16 years were in Oldham, then my family moved to America in early 1958. Progress is one thing, but there is an element of sadness too. I will be 83years old soon but I do have some good memories.
Oldham has always been a dirty old town but it used to be a fun & safe place. But that was 50 years ago. Glad I got out 40 years ago.
What a wonderful piece of work. The atmosphere of the old pics is so strong. I can't get over how many people are walking around in the old photo's in comparison to the new photos. It looks so barren. I loved Oldham so much. Thankyou for this wonderful Video. It's mesmerising to watch.
I guess the internet of things happened and most buy online these days🙃
@@allabouteve3290 You could be right. It looked so thriving in the earlier pictures, it's quite sobering to think the young children of today will remember Oldham so differently by the time they grow up.
So sad to see this happen to so many towns and cities across the country.
This just shows hod the heart and soul has been ripped out of Oldham .. it’s incredibly sad to see it now .. anyone involved with these changes over the last 50 years should be ashamed of themselves
Grow up in Oldham 50s/60s left in the early 70s moved overseas I don't believe how its changed horrifying looks soulless.
It is….famous Oldham land marks are just being torn down without any thought of preserving Oldhams history, culture legacy and heritage and that’s because the majority of Oldhams counsellors don’t even originally come from Oldham neither have their forefathers , they have no Oldham family heritage, history,so they are not interested in preserving Oldhams history, cultural and heritage at all. All that will be left of Oldhams history and heritage are photographs like these . So very sad Oldhams has lost its historic heritage skyline, it’s now beginning to look like Islamabad skyline. RIP Oldhams history, legacy and heritage. Once Oldhams was the world producer of spun Cotten , known for the best Market in the north west, there were coaches that brought people to Oldhams market it was that good and famous…. The market is now a shameful and if you don’t wear Asian clothing well there’s no point going . Oldham was once the centre for the best brass band contests in the country, Winston Churchill was Oldhams member of parliament…has the council ever put up a sign or statue to this..errr no. Many famous people come from Oldham, Sarah Lancashire, BrianCox, Bernard Cribbins, Eric Sykes, Andy Kershaw, Bobby Ball to just name a few. There are many more historic stories of Oldhams heritage, history, culture and legacy but sadly it’s all gone or going. Culture, history and heritage is not racist it’s being proud of your heritage and history, proud of where you come from and proud of where you live….how many Oldhamers can say they are proud of their town now !!
@@susansaxon4780 Always said the suntans would destroy Oldham I was right .😠
My home town!
Great film. I was brought up in Werneth. The dual carraigway runs right over where I lived at the bottom of Windsor Road. The new Oldham is horrid! I loved the old town centre and market. I loved the 2 - way streets with parked cars and not block paving. The old buses with simple none flashy bus stop signs. It all looked friendlier. I loved the murky, dark mystery buildings here and there and the old mills. Everything has to be flashy these days; all glass, chrome and stainless steeI. I know there were a lot of houses that these days would be classed as slums and were demolished. The picture on Sandy Lane, Royton is a good one. The old building that's dwarfed by the huge mill, is still there but boarded up and has been for years. Question is - why? And the house lined road that's just grass now. Again a great look back to what I'd describe really, as happier times.
Lived in Chadderton in the 80s as a kid, on firwood park. It was a happy time, going to toy and hobby, playing footie at the sports centre. Great memories!!!
Excellent video, I love the ancient images and paintings of Oldham. The town would have been better put back to pasture when the industries had finished.
Excellent video with great music. Nice one👍
I just loved the tale of Oldhams past, beautifully done. Thank you. I’m now 72 years old and, joined the Armed Forces at 18 years of age. Leaving my home in Derker, to see the world. I can never go back to my roots because of it’s ruination. It once was a town with a soul. Now, it’s just a sh1thole. Stay safe people.
Born in Oldham in grandmother’s house…Mum at 14 yrs worked in the cotton mill up the road …grandfather worked in the coal mine up the road…remember going to Alexandra park for picnics….& going to Oldham Market…parents emigrated to 🇨🇦in the early 1950’s…
Its so sad to see all the beautiful buildings. I loved living and being from oldham. Its so sad to see it been taken over by Asians. Its completely ruined. Our country is ruined 😢😢
.... loved this, thank you x
this is such a cool video! I was born in Oldham and I still live here. I loved seeing the comparison photos. They knocked down so many nice buildings what a shame😢
I learned some new history about Oldham - thank you !
probably the best video ive seen of our town (i'm born and bred in Chadderton) answered some questions i had, like why is it curzon street, theres much more history in our town than we think there is and it should be remembered more. Having said that, ive been doing my family tree, mums side (dad was adopted so its more difficult than mums) ive discovered my family have only been in Oldham since the late 19th century. Previous to that they came from Gainsborough and before that some village, Sturton le steeple, also known as sturton cum fenton, in Nottinghamshire. part of me is kind of disappointed with that lol..... also, love the music in this.
Ive not even watched this video but all i wanna say is thank you. I requested this mooonnnths ago and my guy you came through. Thank u G
yes i didn't forget, I just had a very busy few months (personal stuff) so took a lot longer this one!

@@janesykes4483 hi
will put that on the list - just in the middle of Liversedge and Heckmondwike at the moment 🙂
@@allabouteve3290 bets that's interesting
There was a time in the late 60's when I really enjoyed Oldham. Have to say though it was in decline even back then. It was what it was ,a place, that produced wealth for a few, and a living for every body else. Wouldn't say that it was a great place to live in back then as Britain was moving on, and it was very much in the shadow of Manchester which was an exciting, and thriving place. Did like the people though.
You could easily say that for all towns in the uk.
60's was the last of the good times especially as a child, the freedoms you had back then compared to today's kids is sadly lost now.
Thank you for sharing, I found that so fascinating.
Ah a new one , i love watchimg ur video's ,thanks xx❤
Now Gandhi runs Oldham and that type
I don't know if it's just my view on the old photos but to me Oldham town centre seemed to be a much bigger place with a lot more life in the earlier years of our town?
Yes it's like most towns today - they are like 'ghost towns' - everyone buys online instead ;-)
Excuse me luv, how can I get to Oldham 😉
Oldham had character and history now just looks like any other new town boring who decided this where has mumps bridge gone I miss it
..... setons, home of the tubular bandage.......... I was sad to see that go too.....

Now its like living in Pakistan 😉
