Technically king vegeta and his elite warriors were the first to face Frieza, before he killed them and the king and decided to blow up planet vegeta. From there he runs into bardock as he’s about to carry out his plan. Just think both fathers of goku and vegeta tried to take down Frieza the same day

The old version of Bardock was morally ambiguous he had a few good traits yes but they didn’t take away from the horrible things he did. He also didn’t spend that much time with his two sons and he was more focused on his work. But over time he redeemed himself and tried to do the same for his whole race by taking down Frieza. He’s portrayed much more realistically and he even has way more screen time to flesh him out as a character.
This is why I prefer Z Bardock. The concept of a cruel man seeing visions of the same bleak fate he brought to others happening his own cruel people and being unable to prevent it. In turn, this gets him to be better and save his son by sending him away.
Yeah the Japanese version had real ominous overtones. It didnt let you forget that even though he was the protagonist, Bardock was still very much a bad guy.
