Yes -- this is a "start here" and "refresh here" video for defrost and walk-in coolers/refers. (I think restaurant and store owners lose sleep over their refers quitting and losing $000s on spoiled food.)
Bro I never had a mentor before but you are one of best services tech and Refrigeration business man hones. That I see on UA-cam and the field just give thumbs up. I learnt things to do to cut back my call backs.
Thank you brother!!!!! Your video helped more than you know! I've been fighting with a walk-in freezer for the last week I was about to give up. I thank you for the video
Your videos are helping me so much man, you don’t know how much I appreciate it. Just started my new career in refrigeration tech work. Been doing residential AC TECH for two years and started to get bored and wanted to learn everything. Your videos are great.
Very few guys on UA-cam are good at Explaining thoroughly what is going on in a System, plenty can fix and solve the issue but the actual Explaining of all the Functions and Sequence of Operation of whatever they are working on is True Teaching. It is very rare to find a Super Tech and Teacher in One.Great Job coming from a 63 yr old Tech still working and Learning every single day.
Thanks so much I really enjoyed the video it really taught me something about commercial refrigeration.I am a service technician doing AC and chiller on buildings. That really help me and would like to thank you for sharing the taught with us .
I've been doing residential work for two years and just barely got into refrigeration. The way you explain things makes so much sense to me. Whenever I have a problem or I'm stuck at a job, I always come back and watch your videos. Thank you so much for these videos and keep them coming.
I have let the smoke out of a lot of new parts because of not fully diagnosing the root of the problem. Great video not a HVAC guy but I am a systems guy and can really appreciate the process.
Chris, your explanation of the reason why they have defrost clocks reminded me of when I we a kid and used to unload the delivery truck at McDonald's. The air in the frozen section was so cold that on hot summer days, it would actually snow in front of the trailer door.
I had this explained to me before and it was not like that. Your da man when it comes to explaining. I am Just getting started in Refrigeration from Resi and I use your videos all the time I run into an issue. Will give you tons of credit on my UA-cam station. Thanks.
Watching this video literally helped me finally connect the dots in refrigeration. At the time clock where your explaining 3 is defrost 4 is refrigeration 1 n 2 are your high voltage line and N your neutral and X is defrost termination than explaining the theory behind the limit switches into a light switch concept was very practical. Thank you.
Note: the "N" terminal in the unit shown here isn't actually a neutral, it's one of the phases, hence why he is measuring 208V between it and other terminals. I'm no HVAC guy but I presume presume they set it up like this with 208V control circuitry so the refrigeration unit as a whole doesn't need a neutral.
I like how you took your time and did a systematic check of the electrical circuits. Checking for resistance in the terminal wires of the defrost clock, with the power off and then turning the switch gear disconnect back on, and pushing the compressor contactor in that power on the compressor and condenser fan. Basically the compressor and fan are wired in a parallel circuit, by doing this the defrost clock is faulty . You check the condenser fan motor, Commerical Ice boxes have a small defrost clock in them and electric heaters mounted inside the Evaporator coil, I used to work on those units, and to check to see if the unit went into defrost, I would turn the defrost clock wise, and hear a click the compressor and both evaporator and condenser fans will shut off and the unit will go into defrost, leers units and others did not have a fan limited switch and defrost limited switch or a electric heat safe limited switch, but it was easy to service and work on too.
One of your best videos yet! Well presented & even a refrigeration novice like me was able to clearly understand all the concepts concerning the time clock & its operation. A very valuable training tool indeed!
I will be going live on UA-cam this evening 8/1/22 @ 5:PM (pacific) to discuss recent videos and answer questions from the live chat, from emails and from UA-cam comments, come on over and check it out ua-cam.com/video/HSIOTgOXxV0/v-deo.html
Thanks for the gems of wisdom. You are a great teacher & it comes naturally! I’m guessing you had a great mentor/teacher who gave you the gift that keeps giving....knowledge. Keep em coming!
I made a bunch of mistakes when I was coming up, I was taught by an old school tech that taught me a bunch of the old school ways, such as beer can cold and we never used a recovery machine. We charged AC's to 275#/65# regardless of the outdoor temp and indoor wet bulb. I always knew something wasn't right about that method but just never challenged authority. Eventually when the internet came about I started reading and realized it was all wrong! But In the middle of all that bad advice I got a bunch of good stuff too. I learned people skills, and sound mechanical troubleshooting skills so I ask myself was it all bad advice????
Great Teacher and Tech but No Mentor and give you the ability to teach I'm 63 been in and out of Schools my whole life and found that Teaching True Teaching is a Gift not all Teachers are good.Just like good Technicians are few and between teachers it's truly a Gift
Sir I'm asking were are you from your English is very clear I'm also aircon tech here in Philippines, I wish you're the one my partner to repair & installation walk in chiller
GREAT VIDEO. Especially good for those of us who worked on refrigeration and stopped like 15 years back. Now scrambling for a quick refreshing due to new service contract that includes light refrigeration. I’m going to watch this one several times this week or till I feel comfortable again. Thank you for posting this video ✌🏽
Great explanation. Thanks for the detail. I'm going into my third year in the HVACR industry. The company I work for does similar work as to yours and its good to see someone willing to share. Thanks for the content. Looking forward to future videos.
Love your videos! My son does this and he now has been at U of Iowa Hospitals and clinics ; but he did what you do years ago! Thank you for your time doing these videos!

Stumbled upon your channel and really like how thorough you are with your service calls and explaining how things work and the process you go through. I’m new to the refrigeration part of the trade, got put on call this year. So I’m just trying to learn whatever I can. Glad I found your channel.
Thanks, i have been dying to learn about defrost time operation and this helps alot. P.S, i will never cut and destroy my old drivers license. Great tip my HVAC Bro.
Awesome explanation on how defrost clocks work with refrigeration application we haven't got to learn about those yet until this next term when we go back January 13th it's good to have a little heads up on this thanks a lot
you are an absolute excellent proctor explaining !!! the best ive seen on you tube. thanks from one tech to another for being so entailed and informational !!!!!
This is a great video for me to learn from. I really appreciate your videos as I am learning a great deal of knowledge. You are a great teacher. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks.
It's great that you give a lot of information. I think a lot of us are here to learn, so your format is perfect. If I'm not learning something, I usually skip through videos. I actually skipped back a few times to make sure I understood. Subbed also.
Thank you, my friend. you remind me of myself. I've been doing this a long time. The video is in great detail and was very helpful. Thats is a great talent you have there. Thanks again
Howdy there Sir! Thank you much for recalling on basics as my shop school teacher said "always go to basics"including the security ID procedure(hajaha) Greetings from Cancun México blessings Vaya con Dios amigo
Personally I think it would be a good idea to have the defrost heater on its own seperate contactor and have the timer control the coil rather then running it thought the timer. While the timer can handle the current if something went wrong with the heater and it started over amping then it can easily overload and burn up the relays in the timer. If you used a contactor that was rated 10-15 amps higher then the load of the heater it could easily handle the over amping and neither the timer or contactor would get damaged. Adding a properly rated fuse in line with the contactor will add an extra layer of safety that can protect the contactor meaning if the heater shorts or something you will most likely only have to replace a couple fuses instead of a timer.
'Bejamin Lock: Isn't that the manufactures Job to Place those safety components in place, they probably designed it this way so #HVACR VIDEOS really dont need to rig it up.
Hi boss, great video! I work on food equipment and am starting to get into the refrigeration side. This really helped out a lot. I am trying to get my head around this stuff and am just afraid of making to many mistakes. Thanks again.
I used to wind up making several repairs to other units I wasn't called on. Some guys put blinders on when entering the motor room! I liked to keep my equipment running nicely-made me stress less when home.
I love your vids man, you explain everything very thoroughly and well. As someone whos interest in getting into HVAC your videos are very useful and informative.
This video has been the most thorough in explaining the sequence of operation for the defrost cycle. Keep up the good work.
