Had been in F&B operations for 35 years, barback to management, got bored with pushing paper and for the past five years to chase the blues, as a sideline distraction, have been more or less handling most of the fridge work, (with varying degrees of success and flaming failures) at a horse race track / music venue where I still spend more time pushing paper. Attended Bryan Orr's first symposium pre-pandemic and met Dick Wirz. 40 years later...watching your back of a cocktail napkin scribbles with free verse keeping it real rambling video has connected more of the dots between my ears than any of all the above. Another nice job Dave, it does get “ busy” in that evaporator at times especially when someone uses all black wire, lol.I found a “missing” defrost timer years ago in the janitors closet at a bakery? The owner thought it was the timer for the parking lot lights 🤣

Some use two klixons instead of the three wire, Some mount on the tube sheet end of the box while others mount on the 180 bend. The electronics are eliminating much of it now.

I definitely got the evap side of it but how does the control voltage get to your contactor up top? Am I bringing #4 from my defrost clock up to one side of the coil voltage on my contactor and the other side goes through my low pressure/high pressure switches?
the time clock controlls your solenoid valve coil. the condensing unit is on its own circuit and the psi switch controls one leg of your contactor. hope that helps.

Thank you for this video. When you say, that activated "half of the evaporator fans" and then the "fan delay activates the second half". What do you mean by that? All 3 fans run at lower RPM (half speed) first and later on at full speed? Or does it mean that only half of the fans run first and the other half do not at all but only later are turned on when fan delay has reached 35°F? So, do "half fans" refer to lower RPM speed or only half of the fans are running at first stage?
@@NorCal-refrigeration what if there’s no wire going from 1 on the roof top timer and the evaporator. Would you go 4&N so the heater is energized for the majority of the run time and just not during defrost?
@@chrisbivens5410 gotcha you could try that if the line freezes up might have to run a circuit to it 115 volt and a 115 volt heater. I’ve seen that a lot also.
Where can I get 240v to power the A421 when converting from mechanical and the defrost clock (terminal 1) is on the condensing unit? Seems only N is always energized. I've been having to feed in a neutral and run the stat 120v but wish could just use the wiring already available in the freezer evap.
Working on a turbo air evaporator. Curious.. the freezer was at 65 degrees ( room temp) we couldn't get the fans to kick on to cool the room down. The compressor kept kicking on and off because of low pressure. Does the evap cont. to do that till the fan delay gets to 35 degrees?
im trying to process this. I think I got a grip on it. When not in defrost and no call for cooling common sits at the fan delay not actually running fans unless there’s a call from the stat opens the solenoid pressure switch makes temp drops below fan delay set point in which then it makes. Fans run. Defrost time starts. System pumps down? Heaters run? Until either time is complete or temp on defrost term makes in which we repeat first step.
As long as the box is below 35 the fans always run until defrost. Defrost timer drops one half of fans ( 230 volts ). Usually defrost gets coil above 35 degrees and after defrost the compressor will run with less load on it. Until coil gets to 35 degrees. That’s what the fan delay is in there for.
Can I use a 8145-20 time clock to replace a 8141-20. I know the 8141 has 2 nc contacts but the freezer seems it only needs the cooling and defrost only? It’s a norlake old capsule type WI.
And 95% of electricians are stumped... They do not understand how condenser and evaporator work in conjunction without electrical circuitry Dad always said; “wired in series” while Clifford the electrician looked dazed and confused.... Great job Dave!

Add a rusty, crusty terminal block that can only be accessed while laying on the top of a rickety shelving unit that you just had to remove a soggy mass of melted what was that?
If the defrost clock is just a switch why are you supposed to see voltage at the terminals in the clock shouldn’t you see no voltage if the switch is closed?

I'm installing a condensing unit with 2 evaporators. Can I wire both evaporators to the defrost timer or do I need to go through contactors ?
Where would you wire in your condensate line heater in this application?

The compressor will run low suction until the fans come on.
