      Yeah we are fine. Lockdown mode means I can’t make new footage, can’t go on tour and makes even filming the conversations between myself and Andrew difficult.

    This video makes me so happy. I’ve always loved thoughtful architecture, and moved to Brisbane in 2003.
    Watching the city change from 2003 to now has been quite amazing.
    I loved QAG when I first visited in 2000 (yayoi kusama’s ‘narcissus garden’ was in the watermall at that time), but the opening of GOMA, and the re-envisioning of the State Library were just breathtaking.
    I particularly love the experience of walking through 19 James street - such a thoughtful creation of public space :)
    It’s so fascinating to finally know the background of these wonderful buildings I see walking through the city every week (normally!). Thank you!!

    14:34 D House by Timothy Hill 2000 is just pure genius ... spent a day researching this house :-)
    so many layers ... complex yet has all the essentials integrated so compactly ... that"s just pure skill ;-)
    ... truly overlooked brisbane having such good work ... but not anymore thanks to archimarathon! :-)

      Thanks MrPelikan500. I am glad we made a difference. I think D House is 2000 but yes, Timothy lived there in one of the rooms and is friends with the owner. Apparently he tinkers and builds new things so yeah, it’s an on-going project in a way.

    Brisbane is onto something unique in contemporary architecture. I love the work of John Ellway. The work of Donovan Hill is new to me but equally interesting, There are definitely some innovations that explore fundamental lessons from the past and innovations that are being made to enrich. The efforts to blend the landscape into the structure, and to express the structure clearly through exposed timber, post & beam. There is of course the luxury of a mild climate there, that those of us living in Seattle, for example, can't quite enjoy in the same way, but certainly, some ideas are applicable and useful to inspire better design. Thanks for this tour and I appreciate your work and the talented group of designers working in Brisbane!

    Glad to finally see BRISVEGAS on video!!
    Architecture in Brisbane truly embraces its climate and sub-tropical lifestyle, which also enable more flexibility in terms of spatial connectivity and blurring boundaries/the line between the indoor and the outdoor.
    Also I am also intrigued to hear that architecture in Brisbane is borrowing different architectural elements because I had never thought about it that way - first impression when the Calile was unveiled "oh thats....different, but still somewhat suits the context and is making things a little more exciting" - I think it broadened the imagination of what could happen with the architectural language in Brisbane.
    I think I definitely have taken our public spaces for granted(I live in Brisbane btw) - now that im trapped inside the house, seeing these footages of Southbank made me realise how good we had it.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah the Calile is very retro 70s chic. I could picture it as some film set for a movie set in the 70s. I don’t know why the movie Munich keeps coming into my head. Something in the more liberal days of some progressive Middle East city.

    Yes, Brisbane is fab. And some of the best views of the TRI are from a distance...from a train or the south west when the late afternoon sun hits the copper coloured facade. The way it has been designed to work as a research institute is well worth understanding. DHouse remains the holy grail for Brisbane Open House... I've never been able to get in to see it!

  • @pompei1009
    @pompei1009 4 роки тому +2

    Love this episode despite not a proper architour video. Such an important lesson to learn about human experiences from the inside, not just visual from the outside. I believe many would slowly begin to understand the importance of spatial quality and human experiences over a hero external appearance of a building, especially when everyone is now staying at home looking out during this social distancing period :). Brisbane really grows in me, maybe I should move there.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  4 роки тому +3

      Yes I think in this Instagram age, there are too many armchair critics, “liking” images they see rather than going there to find out. Brisbane I find, for the uninitiated, is a hard sell.

    Great memories.. Awesome insights on the public and inside-outside relationships. How about the traditional Brisbane house being elevated from the ground as a flood mitigation strategy, or did I miss that part?

    • @angelaballard3929
      @angelaballard3929 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure about the pole platform construction emerging as a flood mitigation strategy...just as likely it was a viable way of building on massive hillsides( Paddington/ Red Hill) and for a hot climate where under the house was used for all manner of activities (everywhere else)

    In the short time that I recently spent there, approximately 3 hours and mainly along the Southbank area I instantly felt that Brisbane has a completely different vibe to Melbourne and Sydney. Understandably each city has its own identity and culture, and I felt that Brisbane was more laid back and more tropical. A much calmer sense of place.
    Any thoughts on Adelaide or Perth? I've heard good things from some 'non-architecture' friends

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  4 роки тому

  • @kanokphanbamrungchaokasem3953

    Why not do Adelaide's architecture , Adelaide is often described as Australia's most beautiful city, there are probably the most old beautiful buildings that are well preserved in Australia, as it was a rich city for non convicts to settle. Pls do Adelaide
