I was at every Orbital gig at Pilton from the early 90's to mid 2002, they my fave music makers of all time and at nearly 57 I am still a few years younger then them lol.
Love the music and the life
Got my quad system on at 11 out of 10 listening to this on my boat on the canal I am currently on in North Yorkshire. xxxx

I've always massively admired Orbital for their early live sets. Most acts back then just used to turn up to events and mime to a DAT. Orbital did it completely live at a time when the technology they were using wasn't really cut out for it. They basically rebuilt a reduced version of their studio at every gig and controlled it all from hardware sequencers. They were pioneers and brave with it.
Up until them, 'Dance' music was something that happened through sound systems in the surrounding fields at Glastonbury, but not on the main stages. Their early gig there was massively successful [I think they did a set on one of the bigger stages prior to 94 though, possibly 93, can't remember] and this basically convinced Michael Eavis that live Dance music would 'work' on the big stages at Glastonbury.

***** Preach it, Orbital really pushed the technical boundaries and you would suppose that more artists would take the inspiration to perform with all this mighty and powerful gear in the future, but NOPE. Today, some of the biggest dance acts still just use the digital turntables with one laptop which is essentially a DJ set.
For example, David Guetta had to "perform" with USB's and with no pre-arranged playlist yet still he claims it to be "Old School"...
      Anyway, Orbital are brilliant!

Eat Static as well. I feel not enough people give them enough credit for doing "everything live" so to speak.
Both are true pioneers of the scene.
      Rave on friends! :-D

grizcuz amen brother!! And word on the streets is they just got back together for a 3rd time. They're starting up
a tour and working on a new album!! Can you believe that shit!! Orbital are not done!!
Paul's been doing soundtracks and working on his 8:58 project while Philly Boy has been killing it on the decks, but personally I think they miss performing as Orbital and they probably need the money too!!
I saw them in Jacksonville with Crystal Method and Lo-Fidelity All Stars!! They killed it. Best part was when I got to hang out with them backstage and Phil took me on the tour bus, answered all my questions and gave me a copy of Middle of Nowhere!!
I still communicate with Phil via Facebook but Paul rarely answers my messages 😳

One has to appreciate this fact; in the early 1990's an NME fan poll voted Orbital "Best Live Act" after one of their stunning Glastonbury concerts. Two chaps, a few old analogue bits of kit, years of perfecting their art, thrilling huge audiences. This is why I consider them composers as much as any of the last century.

With you on that one. I remember (and still encounter) people giving it the old "it's just bloody computer music, press a few buttons and you're done!.
Oh how laughable, most of those twonks would probably have been losing their mind in the crowd that night as well.

Had the privilege of seeing Orbital live at a Mega Dog in 1994, along with Aphex Twin, Psychic Warriors of Gia, Eat Static and Alex Patterson (The Orb) DJing between live sets! The stage was packed with equipment!! Now THAT was an All-nighter to remember!

In 1994 they'd have been at the Main Stage (as the Pyramid burnt downa few weeks earlier due to dodgy lighting wiring) watching Paul Weller while the cool kids watched Orbital on the NME Stage and then continued with one of the fast food place sound systems.
Orbital at Glastonbury 1994 introduced a whole new audience to electronic dance music as it was one of the key performances televised on C4 & MTV (first time Glastonbury was on TV) and shown just when most people were coming back from the pub.
Friday was better at the Main Stage, Saturday was all at the NME stage - Sunday was a mix - but I managed to see Johnny Cash.

I am a massive Orbital fan, been following them since 1990. I believe their golden age was 94-96 where they produced the 3 pillars of British electronic music, The Brown Album, Snivilisation and In Sides. They'll never produce anything like those albums again. I'm glad they've put their differences aside and are back together, love you guys.

So many memories :) Never been to Glasto as i couldn't really justify spending that much just to see Orbital but I've seen them live probably a dozen times, starting back at around the release of the Brown Album at some free festie down in south west london, through half a dozen shows at the Brixton Academy, a couple of time in the Cambridge Corn Exchange, V festivals, Wireless festivals, the MTV dance channel launch - hell i was even at a party with Phil once back in the day :) I've loved every single minute of it and the fact they are working out their differences and getting back together is fantastic.

OMG! this is so frickin awesome. I loved Glastonbury for many reasons but reason #1 was always Orbital. I was at most of these. One of my favourite memories was from at Glastonbury '94, falling off the top of the fence, then my guitar coming over after me and almost hitting me on the head, then proceeding to leap around to Orbital 'Are We Here' and someone chucking an inflatable Dalek around to 'Doctor?' at their 'final' glasto show in 2004... the rest is sort of a blur ;) Chuffed I got to see them at the reformation gigs as well.

In fact, if you went anywhere near the cinema field (the outdoor one) during the day, you might have heard Orbital played through the cinema speakers. That was my tape! My mate talked them into putting it on!
Glastonbury was so much better back then than it is now. Nothing like as commercialised and you wouldn't get the likes of Orbital headlining any of the stages now. Be more like Rihanna or something nowadays. Yeah, this was something pretty special alright.

Thank you for putting this together. I’ve never been to Glastonbury and don’t plan on it being Aussie and I think it’s had it’s time but I got into Orbital after seeing footage of Impact at the festival in 94 or 95? and fell in love instantly! Thankfully seen them live in Australia at a smallish club and they were on point!

Seen them various occasions. Including Glastonbury 95. As if i can remember though. Late 80s up to mid 90s were excellent for pharmaceuticals. They were good, music was good, people were good, and we didnt have to look out for some c#$t filming while we were giving it some raving.

Glasto 95 was an amazing set, my son was 8 weeks old and it was his second gig and his first Orbital one, he grew up on em, went to raves and tribal gatherings with me and my circus fireshow and stage fire eating etc..... oh they were the daze

I was there, 1999, 2002 and 2004 [the farewell gig]. Thankfully they did come back for some amazing gigs. The photo of me over there on the LHS of this comment was taken one week after the Royal Albert Hall gig.
