    the radio and In Sides edits of this tune are fun all by themselves.
    but... I wanted more... I hoped there was more. I searched desperately...
    and then I found it. I found this wonderful thing that tied it all together in supreme form.
    oh, so very YES! this is the best Orbital thing ever!
    this is what all electronic music should aspire to be:
    taking the calculated rhythms and sounds and turning them into pure driving emotion.
    the Brothers Hartnoll have proven most adept at that -- and this, for me, is their finest half-hour.

    • @digitalmagick
      @digitalmagick 5 років тому +9

      @Liz W I think perhaps it may be the other way around. Many artists are studying contemporary successes and trying to replicate, with variations upon the formulaic theme. Whereas artists whom create truly timeless works may simply be using what they work best with, and with it creating what they believe sounds powerful, pleasing, and moving.
      Just a theory, but when you mix talent and a good ear, then peel away expectation and let them open your eyes, ears, and soul to something unique, you end up with "The Box" by Orbital.

      Because it's hard as hell to get? I bought multiple copies of In Sides, and was annoyed that this version of The Box wasn't on all of them. It was too long to fit on the single-CD version of In Sides. Only the first 30,000 copies of In Sides sold in the U.S. came with a bonus CD that had this 28-minute version of The Box. Later in the U.S. the album was sold with a different bonus CD, which had the single "The Saint" as well as a few live recordings, but not the 28-minute The Box. So sad. The lyrics are utter nonsense but the voices add so much to the music.

      Sorry, no comparison to Bach. I wish I knew how to explain why without sounding like an uptight prick... there's almost zero counterpoint here, certainly no inversion or retrograde. These were the raw materials by which JSB wove the fugal tapestry, and the same techniques that composition students struggle through as exercises when studying his work. To ape his style, even badly, is really fucking hard. By contrast, the harpsichord (hammered dulcimer?) at 9:10 serves as just another synthetic keyboard varying & repeating the same chord progressions and melody -- as almost all contemporary "popular" music does. That's something that JSB never EVER did. The basis of Orbital's artistry (I'd argue) is a different kind of tapestry, one of instrumentation. It's basically theme & variation through a system of electronic arrangements, where the combinations of thousands of available virtual instruments IS the groove and the aesthetic content. There's more too, yes. But it's a completely different musical paradigm. It's interesting though to imagine what JSB might come up with in a modern context!

Tape is called 'Bleeping With The NME' if I remember rightly and they managed to cram 6 of the hugest electronic artists of all time on to a free tape with 1 track each; Goldie, Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, Underworld, Orbital and DJ Shadow. It would have been 1996 though that's when this came out .. hard to believe it was all new at the time and all those artists stood the test of time, apart from the Chemicals who just sound so dated.

    Orbital have been a costant in my life for over 20 years now, they have been with me through good and bad. Listen to one of their songs and they lift me out of the dark places in my mind and point me towards normality. They will have my forever love and gratitude.

    I think Justice (the French duo) got their inspiration from this version of The Box for their masterpiece, Planisphere. especially the bass sounds from 5 minutes onwards and the harpsichord at 9 minutes

      Definitely! 😀

    Is the 'rope sound) in the middle someone hanging himself or being hung? Is the box a coffin? Does the guy survive a suicide attemt? 'indestructible'...or are those his dying thoughts?

    Orbital tended to be so much better than the majority of what some people on the electronic scene used to call somewhat disparagingly "student techno" (ie the type of electronic producers who tried to be like 'bands' gave the kind of interviews the music press liked, went on tour and whose records were sometimes also bought by a rock audience) . But unlike some others of that genre and like Aphex Twin (when he wants to) they made amazingly well-crafted pieces with loads of imagination that didn't need any of the other bullshit and hype.
    On this lovely tune it's just a pity about the vocal bit at the end - well at least it's at the end so can be just cut off.
