Air-to-air refueling is one of the coolest sights of my life.
I have a great friend who does this also and he love his job and especially when the time to chat with the F-16s fighter pilots through out there missions. This is the best of the best inflight views ever

It’s the JHMCS. It’s different from the F-35s HMD, much cheaper but less advanced.

When I was active duty USAF, 6 of our F-15s flew from AZ to AK for a readiness exercise. Our maintenance crew rode in the KC-135 tanker. It was such a cool experience to observe refueling operations from the "boomers" window. What a sight!

Fun fact! Normally pilots make jokes or do interviews cause it helps calm them down. It is a very stressful procedure trying to do A-A Refueling and so the interviews calm the nerves as being stressed is not at all optimal during A-A Refueling.
VTOL VR has shown me that, yeah.. stress will definitely make you overcorrect, (VTOL VR is a combat aviation soft realism sim)
As a KC-135 mech sys engineer, since 2010. I have to “engineer” from a desk...on the ground...in a building...on a computer.
But you Boom Operators (BOs) have the best seat in the house (sky)!
Not taking away taking away from Pilot/Co-Pilot duties and responsibilities.

I see why my son in listen. My sons name is Falcon and that name came to me from nowhere. He’s always wanted to be a soldier since he was 4 yrs. military academy from 7yrs - 18. Never dawned on me he was born to serve. 🙏🏽 for your service this was amazing to watch and the communication with each other was pleasant.

Yeah that's what the F-35 is for.
If I remember correctly they're retrofitting the F-15 model with modern instruments.
They need both. 15/16 cheaper to operate and still extremely deadly when need be. F-35 is the expensive stealth version.

This is maybe a naive question to so of you, but I really don´t know. When you are performing air-to-air refueling, do you refuel only the tanks in the plane or the external fuel tanks as well?
Both can be refueled, just depends on how much fuel the pilot needs

I always find it strange that the USAF uses flying boom refueling so much with their fighters. It was originally designed because the top brass didn't like how exposed their bombers and transport aircraft were during aerial refueling, hence flying boom method was developed to increase the rate of fuel transfer. However, for smaller aircraft like fighters, using the hose and drogue method means you can refuel multiple aircraft simultaneously (I think the limit is 3). But then, for example, the RAF only has their refueling aircraft equipped with hose and drogue systems, meaning even their transports like C-17s and A400Ms can only make use of the reduced fuel flow from that method. Very strange to me.
