Lucas drew on a very wide variety of sources for Star Wars. Dune, Akira Kurosawa, the Roman Empire right after the Roman Republic fell, and Nazi Germany are the obvious ones.

@BlunderMunchkin yes, I think we all know this. Lots of stuff lumped into there - which is why Star Wars is not a thing I would categorize as being a direct copy of anything, since it's such a hodgepodge of different sources.
Essentially Lucas didn't rip off any one source any more than your average scifi writer does. Everyone creative is influenced by the stuff they grew up on

It's not that the shields run out of power, they only deflect fast moving attacks. If you move your weapon slow enough, you can push it through the shield (as Gurney said: "The slow blade penetrates the shield").

    • @brettpeacock9116
      @brettpeacock9116 2 місяці тому +17

The "in-universe reason" for this quirk actually makes sense. If the Shield worked completely to block blows, it would ALSO prevent Air penetrating the shield at all, meaning that you could suffocate if the Shield is active too long, or you are engaged in any strenuous activity, which means you breathe harder and run out of air sooner.

    • @gsparkman
      @gsparkman 2 місяці тому +7

The properties of the shield are also why you don’t see conventional guns that shoot high velocity projectiles. Only slow moving projectiles, like the burrowing “dart” that took down the Duke, or bladed hand weapons are effective against a shield.

A big divergence point between the canon Frank Herbert books and Brian Herbert’s stylized fan fiction.
Frank Herbert didn’t envision a war between mankind and AI. Rather the Butlerian Jihad was a war between enslaved humans and the powerful men who controlled AI, who used it to overlord themselves upon society.

Paul has multiple visions at once. what will really come true is determined by events and the decision he makes. In one vision he dies, in another he doesn't. The vision he is trying to avoid is the one that leads to a Holy War. But the more spice he injected the clearer his vision and his see the path will take him into a war in his name. Also, mostly all SF movies, such as Star Wars, were influenced by the book, Dune. Even the refer to spice.

George Lucas almost certainly read Dune, and took inspiration from it, when writing Star Wars... Arrakis, is probably inspiration for Tattooine... "Spice" is important in both universes (Han Solo was a spice smuggler), but the Star Wars movies, never tells us exactly what it is, or why it's important... The Bene Gesserit and their "weirding way" (their highly advanced martial arts), are probably inspiration for the Jedi... the Voice is probably inspiration, for the Jedi mind trick... Paul, is an inspiration for Anakin, and both stories have a "Chosen One"... There are other similarities, but..... spoilers... also, the "Voice" is talking in a way, that your nervous system, aka your bodys control center, does what u tell them to do, without them knowing, basically a memory loss, of what u told them to do, and what they did... that's how that 6 or 8 legged "pet" the Harkonnens had, "knew what she said", even tho "it didnt understand her"... there's a defence for this, but that means being deaf, which is why u see a Harkonnen soldier, being deaf, most likely done to him, and not born that way... PS: no high tech AI, coz the AI almost went Terminator on them, so they have human "AI's" for that... u see it in the start, when a guy is asked, what it cost to get to the planet, and his eyes, goes to the back of his head, becoming all white, and then the eyes comes back, and he answers...

Hands down the best thing going for Dune is the stunning visuals from beginning to end. Director Denis Villeneuve compiled a beautiful collection of scenes that are truly a sight to see. One thing you’ll notice is how the cinematography seamlessly compliments so many elements in the film. Dune is so masterfully shot, that you could watch this movie on mute and still be entertained. Unlike the original film and the TV series, the plot was easy to follow. Despite the dense, sci-elements in the story, I appreciated the focused approach on only one group/family.

In short you are put into the middle of Dune without much knowledge of the Dune universe. Denis Villeneuve is also not one for much dialogue instead using pictures and sound to tell a story. Most people are missing the context of Dune even after watching the second movie. This is a very complex story and no human is a "good" person. Even the one's you see as heroes are not "good". Dune is all about finding the right path for humanity to survive and the problems of following a charismatic leader.

When a ship makes a jump in the universe, it doesn't know what it will find on the other side, and most of the transport ships that jumped ended up lost when they reached the other side. When they discovered the spice, one of its effects is that in some individuals, who are selected and trained by the space guild, the spice has the effect of predicting a near future, and with this these individuals selected to be navigators on commercial ships, predict whether or not a ship will break down after the jump, managing to avoid this future, and with this, always making a safe journey. Paul even shows himself to be one of these people with this sensitivity to spice, but on a much larger scale.

Probably it's been said before but yes Dune and Star Wars seem very close since Dune was the main inspiration for George Lucas. The first movie that came out was directed by David Lynch but most of the work done was by Alejandro Jodorovski who was supposed to make the movie, with Salvador Dali as the emperor (who you'll see in the second part played by Christopher Walken). Oh and it's been confirmed by Denis Villeneuve himself that a third movie is on track... Almost since he's waiting for the final script to be done :)

you should check out the original books. they are split up into 3 or 4 paperbacks. the original printing may be one hard cover. Your confusion is because they have omitted many of the fine details of they story. it really is a dynamic story when you know everything. This was the third or fourth go around for remaking the movie. the earlier ones did a fair job of actually telling the story but this one had the better special effects

    So few things
Star Wars is based off Dune. That's why the similarities
Dune is a lot about control of your mind and body, you must control yourself and achieve mind clearance, fear is the mind killer, emotion blurs your vision, everyone is plotting, everyone is planning, and everyone is going ahead of the others, there's a quote from the books that's literalyl everyone has plans within plans. Paul has powers cause he has a greater mind being the son of a Bene Gesserit.
The Bene Geseritt are an only woman cult who have developed great minds and phsycical control, so much that they can change their physical form, dna and genes and they can use their voice on others, if they get pregnant they can only have girls unless they are told otherwise by the great mother, cause the male from a Bene Gesserit is a Messiah from a prophecy, Jesica Went against that rule and manipulated herself to bear a male, Paul, who is supposudely the Kwisacth Haderach, but it's very up to interpretation, cause the Ben Gesserit spread the word of a messiah depending on the wolrd and culture, the Bene Geserit great mother can only see the pastof her female ancestries, but the messiah can see the past and future of all things.
Paul has a greater mind, cause he's trained by the mentant Thuffir, the bene geserit Jessica, Duncan Idaho and Genrly and this mind is only enhanced by the spice, but as you see it's not always correct, Paul doesn't see one future, he sees different future, for example he saw Duncan living with him and the fremen but Paul also saw Duncan dying, Chani welcoming him and kising him, but another one where Chani stabs him and finally and the most important one, Jamis as a friend, but also as a warrior who get killed by Paul, and all of them are technically correct. Specially Jamis, cause he indeed thaught him to mature by killing for the first time, and thaught him the way of the desert.
The spice is used to travel and to do a lot of stuff in the dune universe, hence the importance., but the worms do not have the voice, the produce it, cause arrakis is a simbionical environment, worms produce the spice but the spice is also important for the worms to live. And the shield stops very fast things, that's why they don't use guns or bullets, but sloweer things can pass through it.
And girls please, if you have the chance, watch the second one in teathers!!

Hey Blue & V.! Does your brain hurt after watching this? I saw u were trying to keep everything straight about who is who, but having a bit of trouble. The story of Dune takes place thousands of years in the future. Spice (melange) has a part in every aspect of this world. It enhances people's minds. That is why some people seem to have powers/abilities. The Bene Gesserits can control their physical biology to the point of being superhuman. Jessica, Paul's mom, was a part of their order & 1 of their most gifted, so that is how she can decide what sex her child will be, she has superhuman strength & speed. She was also taught the "wierding way" which makes her a skilled fighter. The doctor was what they call Bene Tleilax they r the doctors/scientist that deal w/biological & genetically engineered products. All they have to do is put their hands on u to "see" what's physically wrong w/u. Paul's visions @ times can be unreliable, but if there is something constant in those visions then it will come to pass. An example is when he says "Someone will hand me a cryssknife, but I don't know who or when..." His exposure to spice is enhancing his visions & whatever abilities he has. Not to sound crazy, but I have had a few prophetic dreams/dreams of the future. Most of them came to pass. Ok, let's get back to DUNE & your reactions. The book came out in 1965 so George Lucas definitely got some of his ideas from it for STAR WARS. I saw the 1984 version of DUNE in the movie theater, I was around 12yrs old. I really liked it, but that was before I read the book & found out how much they left out, then I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I still occasionally watch it. Just to let u know, try snacking on something less noisy. It was hella.distracting. Other than that 1 complaint, it was a very good reaction.😊👍

I love how your imagination just takes off!
He was "The One-ing" love that. :)
The Emperor asked the Atreides to take over Dune, to give the Harkonnens the chance to ambush and kill them all. He even helped them by sending Imperial troops to help wipe them out.
No a Truthsayer knows when you are telling a lie. But the Voice, as you can see, makes people obey you no matter what. The Bene Gesseritt are so powerful and strange they are barely human in some ways.
Duncan (Jason Mamoa's character) is widely seen as one of the best single fighters in the entire galaxy. He was up against the cream of the Imperial troops, and see how many he took with him before falling!
There is a little detail not here but in the novel. Paul has never killed anyone before. He weeps at this man's death--and the Fremen are AWESTRUCK. They do not cry, because it wastes water. They say Paul is "giving water to the dead" which is the highest possible honor one Fremen could give another when they die.
Paul though FEARS his vision, of a galaxy spanning war in his name, one that will depopulate worlds, slaughter billions, wreck whole civilizations and crush every other religion save worship of Him personally. He doesn't want that. But he also wants to bring down the Harkonnens, avenge his father, and change Dune for its people. But can he have one and not the other?

so...other Dune stuff...there are 6 original books written by Frank Herbert between 1965 and 1985. Then there are another 20 or so books (written between 1999 and now) co-written by Brian Herbert (Frank's son) and Kevin J. Anderson, which include 3 prequels, 3 "Legends of Dune", 2 "sequels", 3 "Heroes of Dune", 3 "Great Schools of Dune", and 3 "The Caladan Trilogy". Frank Herbert also wrote 1 short story in 1985 and Brian and Kevin wrote 13 short stories from 2001 to now! There is also a few different comic book series.
As for video...there is obviously this movie and part 2.
As for previous video, there's the 1984 movie. Hmmm... the 1984 movie is the entire first book. This movie here you just reacted to is about half of the first book, and we assume part 2 will be the rest of the first book. Then there was a 3 part mini-series on TV back back in the early 2000's, this mini-series actually covered the first 3 books. At some point, I recommend you watch both the 1984 movie and the mini-series, even if you don't do a reaction to them.
There is also another new Dune TV series due to come out this year. I myself really don't know anything about it, whether it's going to be a full series or mini-series or whatever.

The Emperor, who has not been seen (yet) feared the Atreides because they were making allies among the great houses in the Galaxy. This treatened (in his mind) the security of his throne and of his Dynasty - remember he had only daughters, no sons (by meddling from the Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit) which meant that whoever married any of his daughters would have a claim to the throne. The Harkonnens, long time enemies of the Atreides, were immensly rich, richer than the Imperial house and the Emperor chose the use them as his agents to destroy the Atreides. He took the Harkonnens license to produce spice and "gifted" that to the Atreides - ("When is a gift not a Gift? as the Barton said.) Secretly he loaned the Harkonnens 3 Batallion of his Saudarkar warriouirs, thought o tbe invincible, to ensure the Baron destroyed House Atreides and breaking their alliances in the great Houses. By the end of the movie he has, obstensibly, succeeded.
Bit of a Spoiler: But Paul and his Mother, Jessica, survived, as did Paul's Weapons Master, Gurney Halleck who has even more reason to hate Harkonnens. Part 2 is the opening round of the consequences of this oversight....

You can think of this as a reboot, but it's actually a seres of novels, by Frank Herbert in the 1970's (I think). He created this whole universe. He wrote the first 5 or 6 in the series before he passed away. Since then, his son Brian has been working with another cool sci-fi author Kevin J Anderson, to produce a lot more novels within the Dune universe. To say it's an epic saga, is to understate the term "epic".
The movie from the 1980's is decent. It's well worth reacting to. There's also a TV miniseries sequel called Children Of Dune, which is the 2nd novel (I think), from 2000. It's also quite decent. This movie feels VERY authentic to the novels. You can tell the director is a huge fan of the Dune franchise, and wants to really do the source material justice. He's committed to (I think) the 4th movie, before handing it over to someone else.

You know... there are some things impossible to portrait in this movie, like the powers of the Bene Geserit, that are rooted in real life deep mind yoga and the powers commented by Patanjali in his Yoga sutras. The voice is real life Neurolinguistic programming, a tool used in psychology and marketing. The spice allow the Navigators to trace a safe path for the interstellar ships, by seeing the future, literally. This allows them to manipulate politics also. Villeneuve did a great job making a movie that people can watch and enjoy but many things we nerds know are imposible to describe. Like the sign language. In the books the Bene Geserit can use a face muscle little tick as part of the sign language so the untrained eye can't see you are speaking a second line of dialog at the same time your mouth is saying something totally different. Please read the books, you'll like them.

The Fat guy is not the emperor he is the Baron Vladimir Harkkonen (Head of the house Harkkonen), the house Harkkonen and the house Atredies are mortal enemies but both are Royal houses that belong to the Imperium.
The emperor (Head of the House Corrino and leader of the Imperium and all the Royal Houses) feared that Duke Leto and the House Atredies were becoming too popular within the rest of the Royal Houses and would become powerful enough to overtake him so he staged everything, taking control of Arakkis away from House Harkkonen and giving it to House Atredies, he then without anyone else in the Imperium knowning helped The Baron Harkkonen attack and exterminate House Atterdies (he not only helped him with the attack but lent him the legions of Sardukkar who are the Emperor's Army and believed to be the best warriors in the galaxy), this to get rid of the House Atredies and stay in control of the Empire, but he did not forshadow that Paul would survive (nor did he know that Paul had the potential to become the Quizat Haderak "chosen one" bread by the Bene Geserit Order over thousands of years).
Lady Jessica was told to bear women (yes they are able to choose the sex of the baby) by the Bene Geserit so her daughter would marry one of the Harkkonen heirs in order to keep theri plan of breeding the Quizat Haderak (Chosen one, a being that would be able to bend time and space), but she disobeyed the Order and had a boy because she loved Leto and he wanted a Son, enven then Paul had the potential to become the Quizat Haderak thus having premonition dreams and being able to use the voice (a Bene Geserit power), with the spice in his sistem his powers were amplified, and he realized his "dreams" were not just deams but he could see into the future (or potential futures, thus he could see the things to come and with his actions change that future, so his dreams are not the future per se but glimpses into what could happen not only in his future but also alternate futures, and with that knowledge he can navigate the present and change the outcome of things to come like when he dreamt of his death, he could change that alternate future).

You picked up part of the story. Paul is the result of thousands of years of selective breeding to produce a man who could see within to all generations of ancestors and see into the future. Paul's visions have an inherent uncertainty: each decision changes the future: every blink, every stray flash of light, every misplaced sand grain changes the face of the future. Paul sees a multitude of possible futures, nearly all of which end with him lying dead from a gaping knife wound. This uncertainty limits his prescience and impose a human constraint on his character. Dune Part 2 will reveal more of the scheme of the Bene Gesserit and the Paul's future. You must see Dune 2 in an IMAX cinema.
