  • No one gets to go to the pub until the body is off the chassis! Ripping the body of our rotten, rusty Rat Rover shouldn't take long, it's mostly rusted away already. But there's always those little bits hanging on until the end. The guys are back to lend a hand, well, half the point of having a workshop is to get they boys around to hang out and chat, so what if things take a little longer?

Finally a show that’s not “Hollywooded up” and actually shows what it actually takes to do a job rather than the shows that build a car in a week!
I actually had people tell me that it shouldn’t take that long because they saw it on TV ! I had to explain that that was fantasy not reality!

Bad Obsession Motorsport did something a while back where they timed how long it took to make a single bracket for Project Binky. It took ages... People want everything straight away these days, but the secret of a good UA-cam channel is making that longer process exciting to watch. It’s possible - as people like Edd and BOM have proved. It’s actually a relief - when I work on my car now, I work it out in terms of days, because I know somewhere there’s going to be a bolt that fights me or it turns out I have to take the ball joints out to put in new shocks - and I don’t feel like a failure because it takes two days to change my rear beam bushes when that guy in the video did it in fifteen minutes.

If you can still find it, the "an X is born" is really good for this. Quite old now, but I watched the guy make a 100" Land Rover/Range Rover Hybrid and it was superb to watch! It was called "A 4x4 is born" but there are others.

When I worked at a garage in the late 90s, I got a sliver of rust in my eye. Neglected to wear goggles. Stayed there for a couple weeks and turned a part of my eye brown from rust. Very painful. Had to sit in a contraption at the eye doctor for 2 hours wide awake while he dug it out with a needle. Always wear safety goggles!

My answer to the "Ask Everyone" question is a '67 Chevelle SS. I had one in my high school years into the mid-80's when the engine needed a rebuild. I wanted to do a frame off restoration but as a broke 20-something I ended up selling to a collector rather than just letting it rust away.
I actually saw one that looked exactly like mine on a Barrett auction a few years back. Who knows, it may well have been mine.

As someone who patched up and rebuilt a defender only to decide a new chassis would have been a better idea so unbuilt and rebuilt again.. I’m looking forward to seeing edd tackle similar jobs!
For edd repairing makes more sense for views.. for everyone else, 2 grand on a galvanised chassis is a no brainer if you’ve gone this far.

    • @stuartd9741
      @stuartd9741 2 роки тому +9

Alot of commenters have said that.
A new chassis is the way to go.
As you say Edd fixing the chassis rather than replace would make some good educational content.
It'll be interesting how far gone that chassis is.
      Does look very Cadbury's flake...

It's alarming seeing unprotected metal turned into unprotected corrosion and then into unprotected holes. It's a British spec car, so it should have been built for lousy British weather.
I'm obsessive about injected or sprayed in/on gunge. Waxoyl's my favourite because it's not expensive and it really does work (every box, every plate, every fixing, every cavity, every weld, every nut and bolt. Get it sprayed!).
I'm not sure why people think a quick puff of primer is going to be effective for the next 30 years of mud and salt and crud. The back of a fresh weld will be rotting and crusty within 6 months. I like to see a good layer of wax everywhere and, more importantly, everywhere I CAN'T see. 🙂

@@EleanorPeterson I remember I had a business appointment with the owner of a UK Land Rover dealership in the 1980's. I was looking round the showroom while I was waiting. There was a brand new Freelander in there and I was staggered to see so many fittings un-painted and already starting to show signs of corrosion.
So no surprise to see this Range Rover is a rotten as a pear. That was supposed to be a quality vehicle!

I think this RR series should be called
    *Range Rover:* The Famous Five.
With the theme tune to last of the summer -beer- wine.
So many what ifs with this Rangey.
Will be interesting to see how far the dreaded rust has spread.
This will be a looong journey.

Excellent, another great episode, this is going to be a great to project to follow. I'm really enjoying having you back on the our screens. I thought I would share my method for dealing with old brake lines, that I know are going to be replaced. This is going to seem a bit savage! I use bolt cutters just above the Flexi joints, a couple of inches up. When you cut through the metal line, the way the cutters cut, they crimp both sides of the pipe, effectively sealing the ends, no dripping brake fluid and no wrestling with corroded seized joints. I also take as much fluid out of the reservoir as possible to. Looking forward to the next vid!

Edd, I realize that this sounds like yet another fan post, but I gotta say, you really have hit your stride with this show. This is now by far the BEST "DIY" automotive show anywhere, on any media. Even though I'm not able to work on my cars any more for various reasons, I still anxiously look forward to seeing each new episode to live vicariously through you and the rest of your cohorts to learn new stuff and discover what new "shenanigans" you all get into. As much as I loved Wheeler Dealers specifically for your detailed, informative presentations, Workshop Diaries is infinitely better, and I wish you continued success as you grow the show.

Back in the early 80s I was running a Series II swb and from time to time had to buy various parts. I was put off by LR's prices and generally bought from other suppliers. Ironically, my day job at that time allowed me to wander around the Lode Lane site where there were tubs full of parts, but it was strictly hands off!

Hi Edd, this is so good the way you guys do things, I am about to restore my 1968 11a Land Rover in Van Dieman's Island. I am watching very closely any tips that you have on the way to restore classic cars. I love the way you are doing the Rat Rover.

THIS EPISODE IS FANTASTIC! Nothing like getting together with your buddies and tackling an EPIC task! I’ve watched the shows you have been on for many years and it’s been a huge boost to my confidence in tackling tasks that I may have otherwise thought a little too daunting. Here’s a question for Ask Ed: What is your daily driver?

Glad to see Milwaukee stepping up and putting PPE on everyone's eyes, keeping Paul warm with the M-12 powered heated jacket, as well as all of the M18 & M12 ratchets, impacts, drills, lights, and such. I hope you like them as much as I love mine !

I have a 95 Buick Riviera, speaking of getting parts. I needed a directional assembly / stalk. It took me FIVE MONTHS to find one... and it was from a second hand dealer ( read - bone yard ) in order to get one. Sometimes you go where you have to.

Hi Edd and the team, I love the show and thrilled you're back on screen telling us weekend mechanics how to repair everything. My question to you is, how do you and the team avoid bursting into fits of laughter when innuendo seems to be a common thread in the show?

This is the content I'm here for, good old British rusty steel and the only electric motors are for doing what they are good at like putting the windows up and down, squirting water onto the windscreen and turning the internal combustion engine until it roars into life 😈

In the near future, the people will understand that the “electric dream” is just that.

    • @Weissenschenkel

Way before that we had vacuum pumps and air pumps driven by the crankshaft, no need for electric motors whatsoever. These systems were superseded by electric motors because of maintenance and reliability.
The same will happen with drivetrains, whether we like it or not. The only things will stay away from electric motors will be lorries and airplanes, because battery weight matters a lot since it takes valuable space from freight/cargo. Submarines and some vessels already use electric motors when they're based on nuclear power generators, and these things are unsafe for ordinary civil use up to this day.
Internal combustion engines are very inefficient, about 50% of the energy released from the fuel bonds is wasted as heat. And there's no workaround for this, it's by design. But rest assured that we won't see the fall of the current engines while we have ways to extract crude oil, natural gas and ethanol via processing. We're going to drop dead before.
      Have a good day, sir!

@@Weissenschenkel Don't forget any type of agricultural machinery or industrial plant, a farmer can't afford to stop a combine harvester while he charges up the battery for 8 hours same with civil construction... and that's why our good friends at JCB are developing a hydrogen powered engine just like a diesel but quieter and more powerful and the only exhaust is pure water. Batteries? Pah!
