    Are you looking for an affordable Modern deck that’s fair, interacts with opponents, and even shares so many cards with its Legacy counterpart that it is almost 2 decks in one? Well, then have I got a deck for you: Modern Merfolk.
    Modern Merfolk combines tempo with aggro swarm to create a fun but powerful deck in modern. It also shares ⅔ of its cards with Legacy Merfolk, meaning that with a few additional purchases you can switch between Legacy and Modern Merfolk whenever you want. Talk about a 2 for 1!
    While not quite a Tier 1 Deck, Modern Merfolk has been consistently present in competitive Magic and often is right on the cusp of breaking through. That’s one thing so many Merfolk players find appealing about this deck: you can customize it, significantly or subtle, and maybe find the right combination to finally break through to the top echelons of competitive gameplay.
    This video will explore Mono Blue Modern Merfolk, the default and solid starting point for a dip into the modern waters of fish. But Merfolk is versatile, and you can make a splash with everything from White/Blue Merfolk, to the rapidly exploding Blue/Green Merfolk builds.

    Notable correction. Spreading seas doesn't add the super type Basic to the lands they enchant. Just like bloodmoon, it only effects the land sub types.

      I bought into Modern Merfolk around the beginning of this summer, and I spent less than $200 altogether. Of course, I already had 1 Cavern and 4 AEther Vial, but the new reprint of Vial in IMA has made it more affordable (for now, at least).

    I found 3x Merrow Reejerey aswell as 3x Streambed Aquitects in my childhood collection, when I got into magic in my recent years. That has now evolved into a spell/merfolk blue&black deck.
    All spells are counter spells, unsummon's or destroy´s. Around 85% of the creatures in, it are merfolks.
    Some other cool merfolk cards worth to mention are: Seahunter, Emperor Mihail II, "Silvergill Douser", "Merrow Commerce" and "Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator". I also love "Kraken's Eye":
    You also showed me some really cool ones! Might order those!

    The Kira-Kopala split is nice mainly because you rarely end up with a card dead in hand, and both on the battlefield make your opponent's targeted removal nearly worthless, as it now costs two cards and four extra mana to hit any of your fish (although still just the two cards to hit Kira).

    • @IbrakadabraRules
      @IbrakadabraRules 6 років тому

      Zombies are not competitive, the synergy pieces just cost too much mana, 3 mana Lords can't be a central cornerstone of a competitive deck.
      The only competitively playable tribes in Modern are Merfolk, Elves, Eldrazi and Humans

    • @samkominowski6394
      @samkominowski6394 6 років тому

      Is artifacts considered tribal? and I would add Gideon Tribal to that list, deck is gas!

      If Gideon Tribal is competitive, so are Goblins, Faeries, Allies, Spirits, Zombies, Soldiers, Kithkin, Wizards, Shamans, Vampires, Elementals, Rats, Pirates, Giants, Aurochs and Elders
      No but honestly Gideon tribal ain't gas and Goblins, Faeries, Allies and Spirits I would consider very playable but not in the top 30 decks to win the enxt GP thus not really competitive but playable

  • @swalle8674
    @swalle8674 6 років тому

    About Cursecatcher! I feel it is an important 1drop that can be vialed in for 1 to counter or even be played at turn one if you fail to draw a vial. However CC set our opponent back one turn for combos, Collected, Chords and such. With only vials as 1 drop we may often have weak starts and struggle to keep up the gas if our starting hand is vialess. Imo, if we play Spellskite or Copters I dont like them to replace a onedrop since I feel our tempo is weak as it is atm. I feel that Merfolk is stronger to be played with patience and not like aggro, my sideboard is 12 counterspells and works great. However Merfolk is both fun and adaptable so no build can be wrong or right.

    For those on a budget:
    Order everything MINUS...
    1. Cavern of Souls
    2. Minamo, School at Water's Edge
    3. Oboro, Palace in the Clouds
    Just replace these with any cheaper lands you want, it'll put you under $300. You don't have to play it like that forever, get a feel for the deck and buy those money cards bit by bit! In the meantime, the deck still runs relatively well without them.

    Spreading Seas does NOT turn lands into "Basic" Islands. They just become Islands, but retain any other supertype like non-basic and Legendary. If a non-basic land is targeted by Spreading Seas, effects that have in impact or target non-basic lands apply, such as Blood Moon and Tectonic Edge. They also retain the land name so are affected by the Legendary rule if another land of the same name is played.

      The modern Humans decks that I've encountered are 5-color, which requires a lot of rainbow lands to support. To be fair, though, I've only seen two such decks, so my sample size is quite limited.

    Just as a heads up, Spreading Seas DOES NOT make the land a "Basic" island, All it does is make the land into an island, Bloodmoon and Price of Progress (If you're playing legacy) will both still have effects for non basic lands enchanted by spreading seas.
    Relevant rules text: "Spreading Seas doesn’t change the enchanted land’s name or whether it’s legendary, basic, or snow. "

    I was kind of surprised this wasn't a Simic Deck. Have you tinkered with the Simic builds Prof?
    In addition, this is probably THE most affordable tier deck in MODERN. You have to consider context when discussing affordable prices. An affordable car is $15,000 because of the CONTEXT of the prices we are considering.

    Hey professor i think i have a great deck for you to look at in modern that is very interesting. Boros soul sisters. Its very interesting because its highly aggro, and has ways to potentially make it teir 1. And the greatest thing about it is cost, both with its mana base and price of less than $200.

    Spreading Seas does not change the super type of the land so it doesn't make non basic lands basic

    Building mono blue fish. I have Harbringer and merfolk trickster, IDK if this is the best option, but it is sure budget and works well with devotion.
    (Btw I am not running Æther vial because budget)

    Spreading Seas does not make lands into basic islands. it only turns them into islands. much like bloodmoon doesnt turn non-basics into basic mountains. may want to make a note of that so as to not confuse new players. (it matters)

    Prof! Would you please make a merfolk commander deck? A deck you use at your play group! I'm looking to build my own merfolk deck. Mainly just looking for pointers on what to use.

    Yo Prof! Having gotten into Standard Merfolk (U/G) recently, (they aren't exactly "killin' it" as the kids would say) the playstyle seems similar to what this deck is trying to do. Getting a funch of fish on the board, putting +1/+1 counters on them/pumping them with lord-like effects, and going wide (with the one that makes +1-countered-fishes into *unblockable* pumped up fishes). I would love to see your take on U/G Merfolk for Modern. Is that thumbnail in this video of U/G Merfolk a teaser, or is it just... a tease?

    10:00ish talking about vernable to islandwalk, So use Snow Covered Islands, problem fixed.

    • @MemoryLaneWizard
      @MemoryLaneWizard 6 років тому

      It would not work - snow is a supertype, Islandwalk would work on anything that is an island, regardless of it being basic land or not. So, for example, if you opponent has an Irrigated Farmlands, they'll still be vulnerable to islandwalk ;)

    • @dracosdiabolis1769
      @dracosdiabolis1769 6 років тому

      shiki8 I was thinking we run the snow cover lands in place of the basic lands to stop them from islandwalking in on us.

    • @dracosdiabolis1769
      @dracosdiabolis1769 6 років тому

      shiki8 because I don't think they can islandwalk snow covered lands unless they have snow covered lands walk

    • @greatbowlsofgravy
      @greatbowlsofgravy 6 років тому

      +Dan Acton, that is incorrect. As +shiki8 has pointed out, Snow is a supertype, and has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not Islandwalk is effective. If you look at a Snow-Covered Island, you'll notice that it still has the basic land type "Island," meaning that Islandwalk will see that and render the creature unblockable.
