Nice to see a review on this one. I was super curious to try it given the "200yr oaked" thing (I love heavier oaked offerings like 13+ KC picks, Sam Houston/Calumet ultra-aged, etc). Was glad I tried it but would have preferred I tried a pour from someone else's bottle rather than buying one.
i bought this a last year in NH For $50... it is actually not terrible and opens up really nicely. I wouldn't call it a dud by any means. But wouldn't buy it again. Whoever at the Ultimate Spirits Competition decided it was top 12 in the WORLD did so during the pandemic (2020) and clearly didn't have a lot of competition... because the world was shut down
I have a question, is the Kentucky Owl batch 9 still in your top 10 of all time? Curious cause I am trying to collect all 12 bottles of KO or batch 1-12. Or do you only have a Top 5 of all time ? Thank you for the videos your do a great job!
Hey, nice to see you here. Im justin, we traded samples of rare character. As for the dexter, you may not like it on the first crack/neck pour. My brother got it about a year ago, and when we first tried it, it was the absolute worst thing we ever tasted. We talked so much shit about it. Couple months later he went back to it and text me how good it was after it opened up. I thought he was breaking my balls. We put it in a couple blinds and actually beat some pretty good bottles. Definitely needs to open up, but ones it does, it changes a lot and is actually a really good bottle. If i were to buy a bottle, id seriously pour out a couple oz leave it open for a day or two, then go back to it in a month-couple months. But give it a shot, just dont be surprised if you dont like it at first, then be shocked how much it changes when you go back to it after shelfing it for awhile. Cheers!
The Ultimate Spirit Challenge Team gave Dexter Three Wood a rating of 95 points, their highest recommendation, & selected it as “One of the 12 Best Bourbons in the World.“ Probably gives them the right to put top 12 on the tag the same way you claim top whiskey taster from one tasting contest. I bet if you contacted them they would have loved to talk with you about their product and process. I had them make a whiskey for me and it states that it was distilled in Indiana, finished and bottled by Brain Brew. It also states on the bottle they have craft distilleries at Eureka Ranch just east of Cincinnati and in Windsor England. My grain Bill was 74 corn 21 rye 5 barley with 12 % US oak 13%200yr,25% cherry 25% Euro oak and 25%Maple. All of that on the bottle.
@@slvrbach It was okay. Mostly bcause I was able to do some of the mash bill selecting and choose finishing woods. I probably didn't do a great job, but my bottle is almost finished. It was a fun experience and I have a cool bottle that I named and helped create for average whiskey prices of today. I got it when I was newer to whiskey and learning everything I can from ADHD whiskey vids. I would do it again, but try it another way. Bought much worse whiskey from huge brands. The 36% rye bourbon is a giveaway - it is a standard high rye Ross and Squib bourbon. Indiana distillation. It tastes just like the other Ross and Squib bourbons (like Remus Straight Bourbon) with the same distillate except the wood finish. The guys at Brain Brew are legit scientists who play with wood finishing - you should visit them sometime and see it in action. It's just a 4 year old 36% rye bourbon distilled by Ross and Squib. These guys add the wood finishing. This is a really good $50 value. So, if you are interested in a nice 4 year old bourbon with an exceptional wood finish, I would seek this out.
@@eafarrar The product comes from the process at Brain Brew in Cincinnati, and is locally very popular and well known. They have little national profile so far. Matt did a quite reasonable assessment of its taste, but could have done his homework better on Brain Brew, and what they do in Cincy.
@@blakestah It sounds like the producers wanted to obfuscate what was in the bottle. If a very informed reviewer still wasn't exactly sure what he bought after some research, then the average consumer surely wouldn't be. I can't think of an instance in which a producer lost out by putting *too much* information on the label (or at least their website). I don't understand why some continue with the smoke and mirrors. Also, they're just lying about it being one of the twelve best of anything. So I'm not sure how one justifies that. Shady.
Like all of my reviews, the information on the bottle is what gets the attention. The only reason I searched for their trademarked wood finishing process was because I was curious as to what was so proprietary about it. If they wanted the consumer to know all about the cool stuff they were doing in Cincinnati, a great place to mention it would be on the back label....or neck tag even. "Learn more about what makes our whiskey special at "insert website." Instead, they took the "Top 12 Bourbon in the World" route. 🤷♂️

Dexter and brain brew are an interesting situation… lots about it and their sister brand Noble Oak are super sketchy and not very transparent on the labels/ website. If they’re using the same distillate as Noble Oak- I can confirm it’s gotta be a Ross & Squibb/ MGP distillate they’re just repackaging and almost trying to relabel as they did the work. Noble Oak does state distilled in Indiana.
I wouldn't call it super sketchy. They have great tours, and they are all about the wood finishing process. Great tours. But until fairly recently you had to get a bottle in Cincinnati. Straight means a minimum of “two” years, not “four” years as stated in the video. However, bottled in bond must be aged at least four years, so it was probably just a slip.
If it is Straight Bourbon AND under 4 years old, the age must be stated on the label. That means if it says Straight and has no age statement, by law, it must be a minimum of 4 years old.

We put it in a couple blinds w some really good bottles and its either won or come in the top couple, i dont remember what bottles it beat, but i remember they were really good bottles and i was blown away it beat them. Id really like to see you do this review again in a couple-few months after its had awhile to open up.
I have had pretty much the same experience. Got talked into buying it on a KY trip last year and was excited to try it. We opened it that night and it was super sharp, with a magic marker taste up front. Went back to it a few weeks ago just to see, and it was way different, almost none of the marker note, opened up to nice dark fruits and a nice rye baking spice. You can tell the wood finishing made this one different though. Some may like it, others may not.
@@darthsteve3145 yup. Had so much funk in the first crack/neck pour, but really opened up quite well. Would totally agree the woodfinishing plays a part in both. But it really is a nice pour once it opens up
Didn’t say what part of the world this is considered a top 12 whiskey. Perhaps the Fiji Islands imports this stuff like we import their water.
It's not a bad value for $45 but I thought the wood was overdone causing this to be slightly bitter. One local store refused to sell this, while the other store sold cases. Obviously somebody liked it, but I passed and bought a Henry McKenna instead.
Its actually really good. When my brother bought it a year ago, it on first crack/neck pour it was absolutely disgusting. Worst thing we ever drank, and talked so much trash about it. He went back to it a few months later and text me how good it was after it opened up, i thought he was breaking my balls. Next time i went up, he put it in a blind and it beat out some pretty good bottles. Its actually won or come out in the top 2 in a couple-few blinds against some pretty good bottles. We were completely shocked how much it changed and how good it became after opening up
Matt spent more times talking about the company than the whiskey. 😂
It cannot be a top bourbon of the world.....ITS NOT BOURBON. All of the product from these guys is Class 641 Whiskey Specialties as listed with the TTB. So tired of shady marketing (looking at you as well Makers Mark 46)
Thanks for the great vid.

@@jacksmith2315 yeah, it's flavored.....what would stagg taste like if turned into a 641 class?
This one has been on the shelves up here in NH for quite a while and I've always passed on it due to the confusion brought up by the label. Arent these the guys who did the burger king bourbon?

... But what is up with the Black Widow bowling ball back there?
I love bowling 🤷♂️
@@ADHDWhiskey And so do I. A have a couple Widows. A few years into Bourbon. A lifetime into bowling.
Dexter, like Game of Thrones, is great... if you don't watch the last two seasons...
Their marketing is super corny and detrimental. That said, Dexter is solid.
Dexter Threewood? Barely know her Threewood.
The description of the wood that you Read is a Red flag. Gross! Sounds like drinking furniture.
I bought this bottle about a year ago on the recommendation from the liquor store and was disappointed. I can't say horribly disappointed, but definitely disappointed.
My brother and i thought it was horrible when he first opened it/neck pour. We dumped out the pours and talked sko much trash about it. Couple-few months later, it was actually really good. Absolutely shocked how much it changed when it sat and opened up for a while. It actually was winning blinds for us vs some pretty good bottles.
I think this is a decent pour. Definitely not a top twelve whiskey though.
Funny, it says World and not USA... you know, since it has to be MADE HERE!
That was a whole lot of bullshit you read before tasting. Your docile tones were the only reason not to skip ahead. Cheers, Matt. Hope everything is going well with your teeth stuff

When you have to read from the bottles and your phone about the bottles that you are reviewing, it means you're not prepared. C'mon Matt, you're better than that.
I ONLY read from the bottles in all of my reviews. If there is more of a story to tell, then they should point the consumer in the right direction. It's how I've always done it, and that will not change.
Yeah, Matt always reads from the label. Often to point out the absurdity of things on the label.

Tried it. Won’t have it again because it completely sucks.

Woo hoo❤
Doesnt “straight” intend a TWO year age, while “bottled in bond” requires a four year age statement?
If it's straight and under 4 years it has to have an age statement, so 'straight' + no age statement = 4 years +
Joel is correct....which is exactly what I said, lol

Thanks for the info…
I had no idea.🤷♂️🤣👍🥃
