I'm proud to say I actually got to meet Kurt and shake his hand this morning...at the dentist's office of all places 🤣Didn't have much time to talk, but he's a real good guy and I'm thrilled I got to meet him and his son Kyle. Thank you Kurt for taking a little time to meet one of your biggest fans!
Let me just start by saying that Kurt, I'm old enough to understand every reference you made to wood and the woodshed! Yet another very solid and entertaining review. A Trent vs Kurt infinity bottle throwdown would be would be so great to see. Cheers!
This was such a great lineup. I purchased a bottle of 10 year old Rip van Winkle, Christmas Eve 2021. A year later, I scored a bottle of pappy van winkle 15. I tasted them side-by-side, and I couldn't tell the difference. They were so Close. In fact if I had to choose one, I would've gone with the 10 year old rip. The flavor profile of a bottle tends to get better after it's been open for a while. At the time my TV your old roof had been open for one year. I had just opened the PVW15. I have a little Weller full proof left. I have a brand new bottle of Weller 12 year left. I'll be on the hunt for the antique Weller. It's going to be fun mixing them to see what I come up with. Great video.
Poor man's Pappy is also hard for many to make because the Weller line is so hard to come by. Prudent Pappy is very good as well, which is Makers Mark cask strength and Larceny small batch mixed together. Can enhance it by adding an oak spiral to the mix. It really needs to sit for some time to really meld together once blended. Give it a try.
@@FakingANerve mix up a small amount and give it a try. I have also tried it the other, larceny barrel proof and regular makers, and caskl strength of both. Experiment with small volumes and have fun with it. One warning, I used 9 oz bottles to experiment and the new oak spiral was a bit over whelming in a short time.
I love fruit cake!! My grandmother used to make them and give them as Christmas presents to friends and family. My dad really liked fruit cake too. It reminds me of both of them. I miss them both.
I've had all of these, including the "poor man's" that I created using the same blend (60/40). My opinion is exactly the same as you guys. The blend is good, but doesn't beat the 10 or 15. It's probably about the same as the 12. That said, I prefer the OWA to the 10, 12, and the blend. I love the 15. Never had the 23. Oops sorry, for those who haven't been drinking bourbon for a long time, "OWA" is Old Weller Antique, the original name of what is now called Antique 107. The OWA bottle I'm currently drinking is a 1-liter bottle with a price tag of $29.95.
This was an awesome video. I was curious about how the poor man’s pappy would go in a blind against the real deal. Of course all these bottles are extremely difficult to get and try, but at least I can get an idea with this blind you guys did.
I have made a blend of 1 part Old Crow, 1 part Rebel 100 and 2 parts of Southern Comfort, let set except shaking every other day for awhile, now it is my favorite neat!
Try the Abbey of Gethsemani Monks Bourbon Fruitcake. The Monastery is about 12 miles south of Bardstown, KY. They also make bourbon fudge. I believe they might rotate distilleries every few years for the bourbon they use. Wonderfully delicious!
I love fruit cake! I'm Ukranian, and my mother used to make 3 different types of fruit cake that were delicious. Started watching it a few months ago. We had a new restaurant with a bourbon bar open up on our town. I wanted to make a reservation, but didn't know anything about bourbon. Googled your channel and now I'm hooked. Thank you for the info and I really enjoy your channel. Larry from Canada.
It would be great if you’d recap the selections in writing on video as I got a little confused what was the lineup at the end and I can’t make out the labels in the bottles when you had them on the bar. Great video! Love watching!
Dan & Di in VA here ... We would really enjoy a vlog with the two of you creating a home blend as a team and another tasting/evaluating home blends created by each of you separately. Could be one vlog featuring all of the above depending on how long you want it to be. Both scenarios would be really interesting! We really enjoy everything you guys do.
Howdy folks! Ok that was fun! I have many of these and the necessary ingredients to make several PMPs so this was awesome! Also have to check mash bills but wondering how Stagg n Eagle Rare factor into alternating blends? Thanks!
Fruitcake is delicious when homemade well. My grandma used to make and soaked a towel with apricot nectar and would wrap them in to finish them and moisten them for a day or two. One of the best Christmas treats with a cup of coffee - but I have had store bought fruitcake that is not great.
My Dad was a 3rd generation baker and made dark fruit cake. We soaked it with a bit of Jack Daniel. My brother made a white fruit cake and we soaked those with rum. I have eaten them since forever! Located 35 miles upriver from NOLA!
Great post today, we have also made a VERY Poor man's Pappy using a Weller 6 year special reserve and a Weller 12 in the first batch and a Poor man's Pappy using Weller 107 and Weller 12 in our second batch. In my/our opinions each blend was slightly better than the Old Rip Van Winkle and Van Winkle. We didn't have any 15 year Pappy to compare to the our blends. But it was sure fun doing a blind tasting with what we had. Yes please each of you do your own blend to compare to a 15 Year Pappy.
VERY interesting that you both had a strong individual recollection of a specific tasting note on different Pappys before...(Strong cherry, and Green Apple) and are not picking them up now. I am going to chalk that up to neck pour of a new bottle, that usually tastes different, after it has had some time to open up with more oxygen in the bottle. I had a similar reaction to a Jack daniels single barrel select that tasted very tart when I opened it....and several months later ZERO tartness to it....all caramel, brown sugar and cherry the second time.....
I did a Poor Man's Pappy with attitude using 2 parts Larceny BP and1 part MM BRT-01 and aged them in my mini barrel for 2 months. I know it supposed to be Weller 12 & 107 but unfortunately those are just as hard to get as Pappy here in NC.
Would love to try all those Pappy bottles because my favorite of all time is Pappy Von Winkle 20 year. I had 2 bottles of it back in the mid 2000’s. Just spectacular…and only $75 each. 😱😱
great idea for bottle blend, I would be really curious to see just how antique 107 compares in this lineup and then also some blend of 107 and full proof.
On the topic of blending, I did a blend of 33% Elijah Craig 18 and 67% ECBP B520. Deliciously sweet with nice oak and a good proof point. I call it Elijah Super Craig.
A buddy and I have made PMP (60% W12 & 40% OWA107) as well as a reverse PMP (reversed percentages, which is higher proof and cheaper, LOL). They were both very good, but we seemed to prefer the reverse PMP better. I always got a strawberry note out of each.
Would love to see the blending results! I’ve also read at some point that there’s a way to mix maybe weller and Eagle rare (?) and get a similar mash bill to EHT 4 grain but I don’t remember specifics.
Not only do we need a blend, we need to find a budget blend that we can all find. Those Weller bottles would be difficult to find, just like a Pappy is
Wayyyyyy down the shelf level of these, but I thought I heard about blending 'Mellow Corn' with Old Grand Dad 114, is that a 'Thing'? And is it any good?
In regards to the mouth sores - Had them my whole life so I have to be careful w/acidic things (like lemons) and raw onions and garlic. To ease the pain tea will work as will placing an uncoated aspirin in your mouth. (Some folks have trouble w/that last bit). Stress can also be a cause/factor. My guy calls them ulcers.
10:05 I love fruitcake. I grew up eating it, and I buy one every year. It wouldn't hurt my feelings a-tall if it was available the whole year. 11:54 Also, all the Weller, Rip Van Winkle, and Pappy bottles are Buffalo Trace juice. So blending Wellers is much more likely to approximate Pappy Van Winkle than would blending another distillery's wheated bourbon. 15:01 I have some of those metallic ink silver pens (more like markers) that Pilot makes, and I use them to annotate my bottles. I put the date I bought it, where I got it, and the price before tax. You could do the same if you wanted to be able to remember those (or other) points down the road a piece. 🙂
My palette is not as developed as some, but I use Fruit Cake always as my baseline and bourbon must meet this baseline on my palette to stay around. Then it's fun to start picking out the individual spices, baking spices, dark stone fruits, level of molasses and brown sugar and candied fruit and nuts that is in fruit cake.
I would really like to see the blend video, I am fortunate enough to have the Pappy 15 along with Weller 12, 107, and full proof and was thinking about making a blend of my own. I would like to see what you guys can come up with!
I got to have a flight of VW 10, VW 12, Pappy 15, Pappy 20, Pappy 23, GTS, ER 17, Makers Cellar Aged, Michters 10 year, and a house poor man pappy blend. They were all phenomenal. Cellar age ranked at the bottom, michters 10 actually punched with GTS, 15, and 20, and the poor mans papppy edged out the Cellar aged and the 23. Just an incredible experience. I think the big shocker was how mid the VW 12 is. The VW10 was surprisingly spicy.
Great job as always. The “blind” episodes have always been my favorites. A real standout was last year’s double oaked blind. How about letting four new competitors try to unseat the reigning champ WRDO?
The first time Kurt made the “lay the wood” comment and Trent made a face I held back from commenting. But the second time was just too funny not to comment on this video. Unfortunately, phrases and their meanings change. I remember my best friend’s mom scolding me for coming over to the house and always eating their food. Her words were “all you ever do is eat me out and then leave” …..my friend made the same face Trent did. Anyways, thats what makes this channel great. The age difference and father son dynamic is perfect. Many hilarious and genuine moments
I think you should try to make a blend that matches pappy 15 with allocated and non allocated. I can’t get anything Weller at all so I would love to see something non allocated match it.
For canker sores, swish buttermilk around in your mouth, then drink it. Not sure why it works but it always did when I was a kid. It’s foul tasting, but it works.
Long time viewer, first time commenter here. Fruit cake. Please order a small one from Collin street bakery in Texas. They ship. Its the best, original fruit cake, and a perfect example of what fruit cake is supposed to be. I was going to just order one shipped to you guys, but I couldn't find your address anywhere.
My mom makes a pretty good fruitcake…she figured out that not adding the citron, or using a minimal amount makes it more universally liked…also adding rum helps!
Im really happy with the bottle of Weller 12 I found for $49 a few weeks ago and it is very good to me and my tasting group. I've never tried any of the Pappy family because it is way too hard to get here in Texas and I refuse to pay over $200 for a pour at a place who sells them. Now I am very curious about them though for them to wipe out a Poor Mans Pappy like that. And yes, Im sure we would all love to see what y'all can come up with on your own blend of a Poor Mans Pappy.
I've been wondering all along if PMP was really as good as 'real' Pappy 15. What years were the bottles. My 23 lot b is way better than previous years. I'd really be interested to know what year the Pappy 15 was
I have been watching the channel for over a year now and been drinking Eagle Rare.had a chance to try Some Blantons on the Rocks for $16 it was so smooth.the ice ball an extra $3. do you guys have recommendations for ice ball making?
I just bought 2 two pound fruit cakes on clearance from The Vermont Country Store online. They were Bourbon Fruit cakes that were heavily discounted so i bought 2
The actual origin of "Poor Man's Pappy" came many years ago from the defunct forum "Straight Bourbon Forum" and it was intended as an alternative to the discontinued Weller Centennial
Hey guys! Hope the new year is treating you well, and that Trent is making use of that trailer full of packing peanuts 😂 I remember you guys talking about some barrel picks you wanted to do or were planning on doing. Was one of them going to be another old Forrester SBBP? I saw that on curiada but it was sold out, I imagine quite quickly haha. It sounded great though. No part of the phrase "old Forrester single barrel barrel proof: SLB pick" sounds like it could be anything less than fantastic!
I would be interested in your thoughts on creating infinity bottles. My thought is that the Master Distiller knows volumes more than I will ever know so why try.
I'm proud to say I actually got to meet Kurt and shake his hand this morning...at the dentist's office of all places 🤣Didn't have much time to talk, but he's a real good guy and I'm thrilled I got to meet him and his son Kyle. Pleasure to meet you as well! Hope to see you again when we have more time.
That's awesome!!!!! I'd probably lose my durn mind
Yeah Kurt sure seems like a down to earth person. Gotta like that. 😊
Definitely would like to see you both do separate blends and blind them against Pappy. Great video as always guys!
Let me just start by saying that Kurt, I'm old enough to understand every reference you made to wood and the woodshed! Yet another very solid and entertaining review. A Trent vs Kurt infinity bottle throwdown would be would be so great to see. Cheers!

It takes a bit to mellow, is nice, but lacks the middle note of Lot B. The recipe I was given was 2:1 MMCS: Larceny 94
🤔 Hmm... I'm down to clown. I'll give it a shot. Thanks! 🥃
Given the oak adder, might it be a good idea to add some MM 46 CS into the blend?
@@FakingANerve mix up a small amount and give it a try. I have also tried it the other, larceny barrel proof and regular makers, and caskl strength of both. Wonderfully delicious!
All of their first reactions were spot on to what they were actually drinking. That was fun!
Definitely want to see a pappy blend video. Using Weller or other wheaters.
Y’all have inspired me to mix up my own PMP and do a PMP/ORVW blind

Subscribed! - Yes! Let’s see the DIY that beats Pappy. Hopefully not made from unobtainium.
One minute into this video and I’m dying 😂! You guys are the best!

straight salt on the canker sore . its gonna hurt but it will dry it out for a while so it starts to heal while youre still salt water swishing
I never had a taste for Christmas Cake when I was younger. I enjoy it now and have been making my own.
Do it!! Sounds fun.
I did not know of this blend. I will have to try it out since I have both
So prudent pappy is cask strength makers mark mixed with larceny. What happens if you mix larceny barrel proof with makers mark instead?

Hilarious!! 😂
A home blend would be awesome!!! What are the rules? Can you use any bottles or should it be non allocated bottles only?
I have that same infinity bottle, love it.
I think you should try to make a blend that matches pappy 15 with allocated and non allocated. I can’t get anything Weller at all so I would love to see something non allocated match it.
What a way to start a video by Laying the wood to you! haha incredible videos fellas, Ross from Ausin, Tx
Great video guys!
I hear ya Trenton! "Put the wood to ya" He said that and I just about blew Sprike out my nose.
Would love to see your blend. Just Do It!
For canker sores, swish buttermilk around in your mouth, then drink it.
Not sure why it works but it always did when I was a kid.
It’s foul tasting, but it works.
❤ Fruit Cake. People think I’m crazy. But, I love it.

Trenton , I love fruit cake. Try the one by the one made by the Trappist monks at the Abbey of Gethsemani in New Haven, Ky. It’s the best!
Paul seems like a cool dude
I've been wondering all along if PMP was really as good as 'real' Pappy 15. What years were the bottles. My 23 lot b is way better than previous years. I'd really be interested to know what year the Pappy 15 was
I love a good fruitcake. Usually brush mine with apricot brandy, but it would be good with bourbon too.
Absolutely yes to fruit cake! Collin Street Bakery from Corsicana, Texas. They ship to me in Elkhart every year!!
Liked this video, love the background music as well. Excellent!, .
I have been watching the channel for over a year now and been drinking Eagle Rare.had a chance to try Some Blantons on the Rocks for $16 it was so smooth.the ice ball an extra $3. do you guys have recommendations for ice ball making?
Can't wait for the blend competition! More antique 107 and less weller 12 imo.
I just bought 2 two pound fruit cakes on clearance from The Vermont Country Store online. They were Bourbon Fruit cakes that were heavily discounted so i bought 2
My wife n Mother in law make fresh fruit cake for Christmas. Changed my thoughts on them forever. One of the best things during the Holidays
I have that exact infinity bottle. I love it
You guys are awesome
I want to see an Amburana finished bourbon blind that includes the new Barrell Amburana.
Definitely want to see a few blend battles this year!
Looking forward to your blending project, I did that once and went against Pappy 15 and 9 out of 10 people picked Poor Man’s Pappy! 🥃🤘🏼
The actual origin of "Poor Man's Pappy" came many years ago from the defunct forum "Straight Bourbon Forum" and it was intended as an alternative to the discontinued Weller Centennial
Hey guys! Put some of that birthday bourbon in the blend. I see those beautiful bottles sitting back there.
Please come up with your own blends... would love to see that
Would love to see your blends
Need to see your own Poor Man Pappy blend!!
Good idea - taste a bunch of the things you refer to regularly, like fruit cake, confectioners sugar, brown sugar, molasses, etc.
Watching y’all try to come up with some good blends would be very entertaining!
Pappy 15yr is my favorite out of the Pappy lineup. A blend competition is a great idea. I tried the poor man’s pappy time, and never again.
So glad you did this video before the try it video. Quite a day going from Pappy to stink bug. Thanks for making my day
I would love to see you both do your own home blend and i would love to get a sample of it .
I would be interested in your thoughts on creating infinity bottles. My thought is that the Master Distiller knows volumes more than I will ever know so why try.
