The Vita homebrew community is next level. I got mine at launch and it ended up sitting in my desk drawer for a few years. Then I read about the first 3.60 hacks (before it was permanent). Gave me so much more use out of it. This community reminds me of the Wii homebrew community at its peak back in the day.

I bought one during the pandemic (I hadn’t owned a handheld since the OG Gameboy) after reading some articles. Was able to scoop one up for 60 bucks and the Vita is an incredible little machine. I’d argue it’s kinda “meh” in factory settings but once opened up, it’s amazing.

Modding a handheld is cool and all, but it's a real pain in the ass having to buy EVERY SINGLE GAME, just to sell it right afterwards. Then I wonder if it's even legal to keep the game, since I technically don't even own it anymore, so I delete it. a few months later I buy the game again that I had before, but the price went up a whole lot, so I shouldn't even have sold it in the first place. The laws are pretty dumb honestly. If a game is decades old, and I wanna play it on my PS Vita, why do I have to own a physical copy to download it on there? I had to wait a week just to play Super Mario Bros, just because I wanted to play it on my PS Vita, and it took a whole week to arrive. The only thing you can do when you first mod something, is getting Homebrew apps or download games you already own; Otherwise you have to go out of your way to buy a physical copy of a game, just to download it in a few seconds, then I don't think you could even sell it, because I think you have to own a physical copy of the game, just to keep it on your Vita. It's not even that I feel bad about if I pirate games, it's just that it's the law. There have been so many times where I pirated a game withou realizing it. I'd be browsing roms, then I see a game I wanna play, then I remember I don't even own the game. It's just so tempting sometimes to download a rom off the internet, but I know I can't. I guarantee you. GUARANTEE. That 99.999 percent of people who mod handhelds, don't own the games they download. I know for a fact, I am NOT one of those people. Now I admit, I have actually pirated a couple of songs, when I was like 9, but now I definitely know better. Even songs are illegal to pirate. I remember when I was a kid, hearing that "Piracy Is Not a Victimless Crime", and I actually LAUGHED at it, because I thought it sounded stupid. I do think it's stupid that I have to own a physical copy, of a 30 year old game, just to download it, but I also realize now that they were right; Piracy is NOT a victimless crime. One thing I think you CAN do, is buy a modded PS Vita from someone else selling it. I think that might be legal if you weren't the one who installed it. I see a lot of people selling modded PSP's, and modded PS Vitas, stating that they have tens of thousands of games installed on it. I see those and think, there is no way in hell, that they actually own every single game installed on there. Modding a console is definitely worth it, if you have a bunch of games already lying around, but it's really annoying having to buy every single game you don't own. I own a modded PS Vita, I have hundreds of games on there, and it's honestly really cool to have. AND OF COURSE, YES, I OWN EVERY SINGLE GAME ON THERE. I've spent literally thousands of dollars on games I wanted, but I can honestly say, it's a better option than pirating hundreds of games you don't even own yourself. I do personally think though, that I should at least be able to pirate games that have been discontinued. I still bought a lot of discontinued games anyways, just to play it on my Vita, just because that's the law, but I still think they should change the law about that. If you do decide to mod a PS Vita, or any handheld, I suggest you buy the games in bulk, or at a yard sale, or something. They're usually way cheaper that way. What really sucks, is when I wanna get a DLC on a game, but I can't, because it's discontinued. I think that especially is really dumb, when you can't download something, even when it's discontinued, and they're not making any money on the game anyways. I really wish they would just change the laws, so I don't have to spend LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, just to play games that have been discontinued. I can't be the only one that feels this way. I respect the law, and I'm sure they have their reasons for things; that's why I don't pirate games, but I really do think that I should at least be allowed to download discontinued games without getting in trouble. 90 percent of the games I have on my Vita, are discontinued. I could have saved so much money, if it were just legal to play them, but NOOOOOO, they just HAD to make it illegal. I've been trying to actually change the law for so long, but nothing's even changed. I see some people sell their games, just because they downloaded it already on their modded console, and I have to tell them "you know it's still illegal, right?", and they think I'm joking. If only it were this easy to write and essay. Maybe if you have one or two games you wanna get, it would be worth it, but if you wanna get hundreds of games you wanna play, I suggest you think twice about doing that. Vita games are pretty expensive too. Some people think "I can't argue with the law", but you technically can. If you get enough people to agree with you, you can pass a legislation. Unless you're rich or have a bunch of games lying around, it's gonna be really limited if you mod a handheld.

Lol, that's not true but it is fun to think so. The PS Vita had so much going for it but it ultimately failed.
Even today as a "modded console" it isn't that great. Because it was hacked too late in its lifecycle, that essentially it became obsolete.
A non-hacked PS Vita was worse than a hacked new3DS, you even had enough money to buy a hacked-PSP Slim. And now we've fully-hacked PS Vita, it's still is still worse than a Retroid Pocket 3+, you still have leftover money.

I think there's one huge problem with it though that MVG failed to mention. The Vita is already an somewhat expensive old device to obtain (~$150 on Ebay as of this writing), and as the years go by, it's only going to become more rare and more expensive. So all this dev work is going into a device that is going to be harder and harder to repair or simply to buy another one. Now, if this was, like, say, the Xbox 360, I wouldn't be that worried because there were already a bazillion Xbox 360s made. The Vita though? Sony was neglecting it even when it was brand new.

I'd love to see some more attention driven towards the native resolution PSP games bounty. It's currently at $2000 and there was a lot of progress made on it (GePatch) but it's still not that great due to various hurdles found along the way. The developer behind GePatch doesn't seem to be that active on the Vita scene anymore also so it seems that another skilled dev might have to take a shot at it.
The games that do work with that patch look amazing and run great but it's a relatively small selection of games.

    • @ElNeroDiablo
      @ElNeroDiablo 2 роки тому +5

A OLED Vita requires a memory card to hack it initially; but if it's a 3G model (110x) then as part of the hacking process you can install drivers to let it boot from a PSVSD module that replaces the 3G Modem. Otherwise you can have it boot from a SD2Vita game cart replacement once hacked and drivers installed.
PSTV/VitaTV microconsoles can also use a regular Type-A (rectangular) USB drive instead of a Vita Memory Card or the SD2Vita, once the system is hacked and the appropriate drivers (which allow the use of SD2Vita and PSVSD) are installed.
Upside of the SD2Vita option - any Vita 1000 (OLED), 2000 (Slim) or VitaTV/PSTV can boot from it without opening up the system.
Downside of SD2Vita - can't place legit game carts in system to dump from.
Upside of PSVSD - it's a set-n-forget internal mod which uses regular MicroSD's of just about any capacity.
Midside of PSVSD - you need to open the Vita to install it and remove 3G modem functionality, and it's easy enough to source flat flex extension cables to use the SIM Card try to mount/unmount the MicroSD card (instead of constantly opening/closing console).
Downside of PSVSD - it can ONLY be done on OLED Vita's with the 3G Modem, as denoted by the model number 110x (WiFi-only OLED Vita's are model number 100x) where "x = region number" (0 = Japan. 1 = NTSC. 2 = PAL), and the Vita will whine about not having the 3G Modem installed at startup once modded.
Upside to USB drive - It is easy to unplug and transfer to PC to load data on to before being returned to VitaTV/PSTV, leaves the Game Cart slot free to load physical games in.
Downside to USB drive - Requires a USB hub in order to let the VitaTV/PSTV use the USB drive at the same time as tethering a DualShock 3 or DualShock 4 to the system in the event the controller becomes unpaired with the console or the console needs a hard reset (and you need to have the DS3/DS4 tethered over the USB cable in order to pair the controller with the console initially and to initiate a system reset in the event something fails).
Technical downside to USB drive - VitaTV/PSTV USB port is only USB 2.0 (480mbps) so it can take a while to move data to/from the USB drive whilst attached to the VitaTV/PSTV directly as most USB drives nowadays are at the least USB 3.0 5gbps (especially those that convert a 2.5" or 3.5" HDD or SSD, or SATA-type M.2 SSD)

I'm still glad that I bought a *used* hacked ps vita in 2018 for real cheap. I had my doubts but I haven't regretted it since, I installed so much homebrew, emulators, and psp/ps1 games on the vita that I never run out of things to play

The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 game was not a trimmed version of the console game, it was a completely new development which used no code and essentially no assets from the main game. It was developed in Spain by Digital Legends, a company which is now part of Activision and is working on the mobile Warzone.
