Life is so hard. We are actually just one paycheck away from homelessness. When time goes by with more COVID cases, life can be tougher than we could anticipate. Be positive and be vigilant.
Frank Mgtow actually most people cannot just simply save money! Most of their paychecks goes towards living expenses: food, housing, transportation, essentials, etc. Hardly any wasteful spending.
Frank Mgtow You are incredibly disrespectful, not everyone can just save money. Saying that is not only offensive, but it is ignorant and extremely stupid. Paychecks can go to necessary objectives. You obviously don’t understand what poverty means, but I hope one day you can learn.
@Frank Mgtow You obviously live at home with a parent or guardian because your comment is very naive. Lucky you, though - keep taking advantage of that for the sake of your savings because many people aren't that fortunate.

I don't know what's happened over the last 20 years. Not long ago we had the YMCA and YWCA that had rooms for people like Debra to live in, if you have very little income like SSI/Disability they worked with you so you paid what you could afford. I know the SRO hotels downtown were not great places to live, but they were something and it, at the very least, gave people an address. All that is gone. The rich kids decided it's cool to live downtown so everything's been gutted into these $3000 micro-apartments. How can you sign up for help when you have no mailing address. Without her phone, any ties to the world are gone. That's how important it is to have a basic working phone. I was a lazy, ill-tempered, game addict right out of highschool. Dropped out of college for the sake of high scores. Didn't know anything of the world outside of my bedroom until the day I was shipped off to Florida with nothing but my car. Put myself in about $10,000 credit debt at only 20 years old with bottom of the barrel jobs. For 8 months I lived out of that gross van and slept through a hurricane in a walmart parking lot until my late grandfather gave me another chance. Had he not done that today I'd still be homeless, 4 years later. These people need help and can not do it alone. My experience changed me forever. Not once did I beg, not once did people show me any kindness. Police will bother you no matter where you park your car. For being homeless people automatically assume you do drugs. Once you hit rock bottom it's almost impossible to get back up alone.
I'm From LA, and the LAPD is nothing more than the guardians of gentrification. I’m done with this notion that “not all cops are bad, blame the institution that employs them”. F that, if the “good cop’s” pursuit to be an altruistic hero blinds them so much that they that can’t reflect on their own villainous career choice, then they are naieve at best. The LAPD is nothing more than a guardian to serve the rich and harass the poor into either leaving or fking dying. I don’t care anymore about how much they get exploited by local and state bureaucracy, it doesn’t change the fact that they pass and enforce that very same exploitation onto the citizens that pay their freaking salary.
O V O you’re an idiot. They just prefer, like most people, that you should be able to walk down the street without stepping over human feces, or walk on the beach without stepping on a used needle.

If Debra can get a ride and move from Venice Beach to Van Nuys (35 minutes driving distance), she can take a shower at the "Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission Help Center" located at 6425 Tyrone Avenue, Van Nuys, California 91401. They offer free 15 minute showers from Monday through Friday (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) and then lunch at 12:00 p.m. She can receive mail at the Center, and they offer other services. From that point, she can work with the housing specialist to find a home.
There are 80k+ homeless people in LA County. Hope of the Valley is overwhelmed not able to help everyone, just like all the other homeless services. The protests have grown beyond police brutality to encompass general income inequality, as well, so, by extension, that includes the homelessness that results from it, even if that is not explicitly mentioned. Poor thing, my aunt and cousins have been homeless for over ten years I have tried so many times to help them off the streets. I have paid background checks for apartments they were approved I offered to pay for move in costs, first month rent, my cousin has a job as a manager of little caesars pizza and my other cousin is on ssi together they had enough to pay rent and have money left over each month. They backed out each time. It’s heartbreaking. Our family thinks my aunt is controlling them because they sound different from before and I think bc being on the streets so long they follow her. I also fear they are comfortable or maybe afraid of getting back into normal life. It’s a very sad thing for those on the streets. My brother is a meth addict and has been on the streets also for about 5 years. It’s more common now a days then you think. Being that I have family who’s homeless I always feel the need to want to help my community, if we all do something little bit at a time we can hopefully change the way things are even one life changed matters.
Why would she pay 3-400 dollars for a cell phone? There's a cell service for free and they supply the phone as well. Unfortunately these things happen.
She said she has SSI. If she also has Medicaid or food stamps, she is automatically eligible for a free obamaphone. In California, it includes free internet as well.
Yes, I really wondered about that part also. The cellphone I'm typing on right now I only paid $40 for, on sale at Kmart and with a prepaid cellphone plan. Other commenters are mentioning free phones available with free cellphone service. It seems like she might not be aware of alternative options, and is spending too much of her money unnecessarily. Someone needs to help her, she's tired and needs help.
Forgive me for not understanding but I grew up in the 70s and my parents raised me to be independent no matter what and never to rely on someone else to provide me with the necessities of life. As I got older I had to get a part time job when I was in high school and never stopped working since. Never ever have I had a break from working, not even through some tough health issues. My parents used to say, if you can, walk, talk and get out of bed, you can work. She should have gotten a job the moment her friend died, then she wouldnt be in this situation.
Joany11 Swatch Things have changed greatly since the 70s. You used to be able to walk out of a job in the morning ,and have a new one by the afternoon in the UK. Less jobs for the masses, retail closure ,along with factories etc;not to mention robotics ,AI,they all play a part in job loss. If only we could go back to the 70s..and all time rents are governed by greedy landlords, and low pay;people will never gain ground. Also people lose their jobs for all manner of reasons. It’s easy to judge others. Poverty:people don’t get it. Till it gets them.
Joany...... NOT everyone is fortunate enough to have your disciplined upbringing or your strength to tackle life's challenges in order to avoid being homeless. Count your blessings instead of counting other people's short comings/downfalls. 🙏

Well Honestly you might not like the Answer. But they need to Get outa CALIFORNIA first. Second Find a Partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, whatever and split the rent as 2 people. They need to move to a small town in a boring state or city like where i live.. Rent is 400$ For a 2 Bedroom here.. with 2 people thats 50$ Per week Each.. They gotta be able to make that.. And w food stamps and medicaide they should have a better shot. Its no guarantee But i guarantee LA is not gonna be somewhere to get back up .. Its waaaaay to Expensive everything..
I was homeless and now I'm one 10'×8' room away from being homeless, My advice is dont get sick and go to hospital for an extended stay and come out thinking "at least I'm alive",your job, home, and car payment do not care and something's feel worse than death.
Let me get this straight she is on SSI and lives on the beach in California one of the most expensive highest taxed areas in America and she wonders why she is homeless? I know people on SSI in my state who have apartments a car and a phone. It is just basic living but they are safe. Only thing is you have to deal with winters and very humidity summers. I feel bad for her she has been let down by those who should have protected and given her helpful advice in life.
Yeah, it seems like mental problems are the issue in this case. My phone cost about 1/10th of what she says she'll need for a cellphone so she's clearly spending her money poorly. Possibly due to mental issues. Seems she needs more help with how to spend and save than money.
I agree! That was the comment I made you can get a phone for $40 and just put some minutes on your phone. Seems like she needs to have somebody help her budget her money correctly. So so sad
It's very windy out there on Venice Beach- it used to give me headaches when I was younger. My first job was on the boardwalk, second job was on Washington at a kosher bagel shop so I used to take garbage bags full of bagels to the boardwalk after work. If you have extra supplies, bring em to Venice Beach. Wet wipes, socks, water, food, etc. The people out there are just people. Trust ur instincts. It's all good. Person to person. IT'S ALL GOOD. Just do it. #NativeWestLosAngeles
God keep her safe. 🙏💗 im in her age bracket and we are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Evictions gonna be starting soon because unemployment due to coronavirus. It's overwhelming.
She can definitely get a cell phone for way cheaper. My verizon prepaid phone, a smartphone, was like $45 and I typically have the $30 plan monthly, sometimes I change it if I need more data.
Some even get by without cell service, especially in cities. Just a cheap/old smartphone and a handful of public wifi areas and you can get a lot done these days. $300-400 for a phone just seems plain irresponsible.
That's bloody madness and cruel. I have been homeless twice and fighting every day to not be again. Spending hours every day trying to sale most of my belongings. Disability barely pays the rent. Now with this covid horror, millions more are facing homelessness. It is bad enough to try and exist on the street but arresting them. Give me a Break! That's inhumane! If you don't think it can happen to you. Think Again. It can happen easier than you think. Back to the sales lists update. The only thing that saved the apt i am in is the apt lockdowns across the city. They wanted to raise the rent and I can't really afford it now. Have to find a way to check on Section 8 or housing. I wish her and the millions of others the best of luck. What is this country becoming?
I'll pray for her but at the same time if you get SSI she should be straight and living in Venice that's probably why she can't afford the living maybe she need to live in a different state hop on the bus when she get her SSI because ain't nobody paying no 300 $400or no cell she better come up here to Michigan and she better get her a MetroPCS is anywhere from $25 to $50 a month depending on your plan and it's no contract phone she got to be on something.
Yea though she also seems autistic, which may make it harder for her to make those types of decisions. Though I’m not gonna say I know she is, or am I trying to offend her just that that is why I think she prioritizes a phone over other solutions.
How is she charging her cell phone? The libraries are closed and you can’t charge at Starbucks. Maybe she has a solar charger? But they don’t charge that well. Best of luck to her. People over 50, especially women, are becoming homeless at record numbers in America.
I actually wouldn't mind putting her in a cheap condo that's vacant anyway, since she has steady disability income. She doesn't seem like too much trouble.
My husband and I are truck drivers and I can’t tell you how many homeless people we’ve seen. I even seen some people coming out from under a bridge on a desert road outside Barstow. The one overwhelming experience I had was in LA. My mind was blown at the number of homeless people. I wanted to help so bad, but I didn’t know how to best help such a great number of people. I gave what I could but my heart felt so heavy. I pray there will be a better solution to end homelessness someday.
I worked my way off the streets. I got a day labor job where you could work every day; part time. I did so well I got chosen as a permanent employee by the real estate company we worked for.T hen, as their employee; they paid five or six dollars more an hour than the labor company. Day laborers you rarely saw show back again. The job was not a real estate agent. I was the only one who worked everyday. I still lived on the streets at night while working. I had no bills except daily food. I stockpiled checks and saved enough for a tiny apartment. I had been a homeless veteran. It took three to four months.
I only ever seem to find kind and compassionate comments on invisible people videos. I've watched quite a few homelessness videos outside this channel and OMG the heartlessness and callousness of people in them is at an extreme. Its amazing and terrifying that people so violently against helping those in need exist. Thankfully invisible people exists to counter much of that hate. Sadly those people steeped in so much hate never think for a second that they could ever be homeless. It can happen to anyone as mark often says. Yet people never think it will.
Yq well it's a different social structure. About 99 percent of American homeless would take advantage of that and not grow as individuals. They would simply trash the place and do drugs.

I related totally to this poor woman, especially with the police- but with me it was daily. They'd constantly be moving me on, saying I couldn't beg to feed myself and my two dogs. Once, while homeless in Almeria, Spain, I slept in some bushes in a park. I didn't know there were sprinklers in there, and I got in my sleeping bag right next to one. Well, they turned them on in the early hours of the morning and I thought it was raining at first. Then I looked down and saw the sprinkler, so, very angrily I kicked it with my boot; and I broke the top off the sprinkler and water gushed out like a powerful hosepipe and water gushed out right in my face, like a powerful hosepipe and I got a right soaking. It's funny now looking back, cos I'm in a decent flat in the UK, but living like that for over five years was a real living nightmare sometimes.

You are incredibly disrespectful, not everyone can just save money. Saying that is not only offensive, but it is ignorant and extremely stupid. Paychecks can go to necessary objectives.

She should be able to get one of those Lifeline phones, but again, you have to have an address.
I mean, 2008 happened? Or did you forget that one?

With the amount of homeless people in the US alone (esp california), it's a serious shame our government doesn't do more for them. Its really sad.
