- The Dallas Cowboys scored three touchdowns to complete one of the largest fourth-quarter comeback victories against the Atlanta Falcons in NFC Divisional Round of the 1980 NFL Playoffs.
I remember this game like it was yesterday. Mr.Clutch Drew Pearson the original 88 club member! If Lynn Swann is HOF certainly my guy deserves it.
"From euphoria to the pits of depression!" Great call by Vin Scully
Sums up the Falcons franchise.
Probably the best game of that playoff year-from a Falcons backer that Drew Pearson TD was rough!
Drew Pearson should be in the HOF.
Drew is finally going to be in the HOF! Pro Football HOF Class of 2021! Congratulations, Drew.
You ask any falcons player or coach from the '80 team and they ll tell you that loss to the Cowboys still hurts to this day.
Michael Glattli Will the Falcons loss to the Patriots replace this loss as the worst defeat in Falcons history? They had the Super Bowl won. Then Mr. Brady and company made their historic comeback.
Stephen Short No, its even with it.But at least this team got to the SB, but both are heartbreaking. This team will get back to the SB.The "Bartkowski" era falcons never recovered from the Cowboys loss & went into the tank for rest of the 80s.
Michael Glattli I hope that the Falcons will win a Super Bowl. People are saying that Atlanta is becoming the new Cleveland, pro sports-wise. In the 80s even if the Falcons had won this game and possibly the Super Bowl in 1980, they would had go against the 49ers for NFL supremacy.
Next to Dan Marino, Steve Bartkowski is my favorite QB, He had a rocket of an arm, he was "Big ben" before Big Ben, he was a great role model, also, a great man of faith, so I pull for guys who set good examples, so that '80 team was his best shot at getting to the SB, so If had just 2 wishes I would make that Marino & Bart win the SB.I know this sounds a little corny, but I dont give a crap.
agree-those Falcs with Bartkowski and WIlliam Andrews in the backfield were great-oh so close!
Huge Cowboy win...my favorite of the Danny White era...GO BOYS
I grew up in Alabama, a die-hard Cowboys fan starting way back in the Staubach glory years. My younger sister made a business of being for whoever the Cowboys were playing, and making me suffer whenever they lost (which, fortunately, wasn't that often). So going into the fourth quarter of this game she was giving it to me hard and fast. But I so remember leaping to my feet on that final Cowboys TD - arms up toward the ceiling, and just *ecstatic*. She just left the room - she totally knew she had no room to complain about any ribbing I gave her, so she just ran from it. It's actually a great memory - she made the victory in the end all the sweeter for me. 🙂
We get along fine these days, so I guess I won't remind her of it. But this was awfully fun to track down and watch. Hey, Bamavader - does the "Bama" in your username have anything to do with the state? I spent most of my childhood (the parts I most remember) in Troy; my dad was a prof at Troy State U.
Most devastating Falcons loss. Until Super Bowl LI, that is.
haha. I'd surmise that most of the 2016 Falcons weren't even born when that classic1980 Dallas-Atlanta game was played.
In fact, this was the first of the three big Falcon collapses, with the others coming in the 2012 NFC Championship Game vs. the 49ers (when they blew a 17-point lead at home), and of course, their collapse in Super Bowl LI completed the trilogy of horror for the Falcons and their fans, one coming in the Divisional Playoffs, one coming in the Championship game, and one coming in the Super Bowl. And it took the Falcons many, many years to fully recover from this loss. Not counting the 1982 strike season, they wouldn't reach post-season play again until 1991.
I still remember this game. Falcons and the referees gave this game to the Cowboys. I still remember that offsides the referees missed against Too Tall Jones. It was a pivotal play in the game. They make that call. Falcons win the game, SMH
Yep ppl think ATL just started blowing 4th quarter leads and giving up huge comebacks by their opponents. Been doing it ever since I can remember.
I'm a bartender in Atlanta and Bartkowski sat down at my bar the week before Super Bowl LI. Star struck, I told him I was 10 years old when I saw this loss to the Cowboys and Danny White. Told him I actually cried. And then my father approached me and put his hand on my shoulder and said, "It's okay, son. I just won $50." True story. Bartkowski laughed.
How Drew Pearson isn't in the hall of fame is a travesty.
mrmojorisin2 amen
Very, very well said.
He's NOT better than Webster Slaughter. Check your stats.
@@66fredo99 Slaughter has to pay 19.99 to get into the HoF.
And that was the last time the Falcons blew a lead in the playoffs...
Drew Pearson and Bob Hayes. Two revolutionary receivers. Hayes the first speedster. Pearson the first hail Mary receiver.
Sadly that fumble got Preston essentially benched for the next week against the eagles. Coach Landry made a huge mistake in not using him against the eagles...he would have KILELD the eagles. I love Coach Landry, best coach ever, but even he made some mistakes.
Falcons blowing another huge lead in the 4th qtr. Gee, I wonder why? 🤣🤣🤣
Think if the NFL playoffs were expanded beginning in the 1980 season Billy Sims & the Detroit lions after an upset win of the Minnesota Vikings on the road the Lions would play the falcons while either the Rams Cowboys winner plays at Philadelphia
Drew Pearson you could say caught 2 Hail Mary's Amazing Game
this loss still hurts to this day for Atlanta, because how good they were that year and how they dominated this game for 3 quarters then let slip away.I was thinking about this game when the the falcons lost the super bowl to New England after leading 28-3.Eerily similar games. But this game I think was the most brutal, heartbreaking loss I ever watched.I'm from Pittsburgh so I naturally hate the cowboys
Yes this one hurt more than the super bowl game. I was 9 years old and I cried like a baby for 2 days. The super bowl game, I didnt cry at all lol.
@@Stallion67 Holy cow the Super Bowl LI loss didn't hurt you one bit but this loss hurts the most.
This after the 4th quarter interception was over ruled. Green intercepted the ball before this last touchdown. Piss poor Ref's cost us this game.
That loss still haunts me to this day...and is the reason why I eternally hate the Dallas Cowboys!!!
+donice88 This loss summarizes the Atlanta sports history.
+B Shawn yup...
Atlanta is becoming like the new Cleveland sports-wise. Cleveland of the south.
yeah this was brutal. this was the classic Cowboy comeback to end all comebacks.
1:10 - Just watch Atlanta' s #58 nearly sack the qb, then works his way back into the picture to striptackle the ballcarrier. That's hustle and speed.
+TheAlfrulz That was Before Jessie Tuggle(who wore that number proudly) but yes, that was a great play!
Joel Williams. I think it was pronounced "Jo-EL," if memory serves.
Bill Rigdon - Your absolutely right. that is how to pronounce his name.
Huge Cowboys fan as a kid. This game was my junior year in high school. A very small school that was Southern Baptist. I had never done anything like this before but I had to be at church, because my girlfriend and her family would've frowned upon me not showing up for something as ludicrous as a football game. So I brought a small radio and a set of earbuds. The kind in 1980. With a wire that went to the radio and up to your ear. We were singing a hymn when the Cowboys scored the winning TD. I may have gotten a little animated. My baseball coach, a big Falcons fan, caught my eye from across the chapel, with a quizzical look. I signed to him that the Cowboys had scored and gave him a thumbs down for Atlanta. At that point I started getting very unapproving looks from several of the church ladies around me. So I turned off the radio and unplugged the earbuds. Good day.
what still blows my mind when falcons were up 27-17 Dallas cuts it to 27-24 with a TD to Pearson the ball is lobbed in to the end zone and FOUR YES FOUR falcon defenders just stand there as Pearson catches it.HORRIBLE DEFENSE IN 4TH QUARTER that's why they lost
This Cowboys win was a huge break for the Eagles. Not just because it allowed the NFC championship game to be played in Philadelphia but because the Eagles had huge matchup problems with Falcons. Eagles had no answer for William Andrews who was a beast.
Brian Perpiglia - Your right. even though it doesn't always guarantee repeat success, the Falcons beat the Eagles in Philly 20-17 late in the 1980 regular season.
i couldn't agree more, William Andrews was an absolute monster in the 80s, better even than Payton or Dickerson. Madden even said, he was the best full back he'd ever seen. Were it not for that devastating knee injury he was a sure hall of famer
@@dr.ishmaelmitchell3113 Exactly! Well said
So the Falcons would have won the NFC Championship Game and made it to Super Bowl XV.
PHI at DAL in season finale, Cowboys win the game 35-27 but loses the division to the Eagles on a points tiebreaker. The Cowboys led 35-10 in the 4th & had it held, the Cowboys win the NFC East
Instead, the Cowboys are the NFC-4 and the Eagles are the NFC-2
Guess where the Cowboys went for the NFC Championship?
Am I a Cowboys fan? No. However, I was extremely proud of QB Danny White's performance during the season. Especially in the playoffs
Vin Scully!
Christopher Johnson : No kidding! I never knew he did any Football. My favorite baseball announcer of all time.
Although he always pronounced it "FALL-cons." Used to irritate me.
yeah he used to call NFL in the late '70s and early 80's-called Staubach's last game against the Rams in '79
Also called the 'Catch' game when the 49ers beat the Cowboys in the NFC title game in 1982.
And Cowboys hater George Allen. That's why it is even better when Pearson scores...
How in the hell is Lynn Swann in the hall of fame and Drew Pearson is not????? Drew Pearson made just as many big plays in the post season and regular season as Lyn Swann. It is total BS. And this is coming from a Dallas Cowboys hater.
Michael Berry Cause your mom wont let Drew Pearson into the hall of fame.
So The Falcons Been Knew By Blowing Leads 💯🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ Dats Krazzzzyyyy
Pose the number one game!
A classic Atlanta blown lead 🤣🤣🤣
The original 28-3
I'm assuming Dallas attempted to go for 2 pts and failed?
They missed the extra point attempt
There was no 2 back then
There was no two point conversions back then in the NFL...the extra point was blocked...I remember watching that game
I remember watching this game as a child and the whole house was happy! Until those two great catches by Drew Pearson in traffic put Dallas ahead...the excitement in the house quickly turned into disappointment.
I remember watching this game and must add after Dallas took the lead the Falcons still had about 1:00 left on the clock and had driven to the Dallas 49 yard line...3rd and 1 and Barkowski Fumbled the snap from center and Dallas recovered..if that fumble never happened the Falcons had a good chance to tie with a field goal or win with a Touchdown because they were moving the ball at will.

Dez still didn't catch it.
+William King nice.
