    Thanks for the shout Greg! Good run down of the ASDA.. I hate when politics get in the way of saving lives.
    We were so happy to get a conclusion to the cyber-kidnapping case. Poor Kai was so scared and COLD when we finally found him. It’s really sad that there are those out there that are willing to put kids through that much stress and fear, all for money. This particular event was a great example of multiple agencies working together and not stepping on toes. Great law enforcement detective work by those at the Riverdale PD. We appreciate you covering the story!

      Giving US companies a chance to catch up and compete in the market with a more guaranteed market share isn't a terrible thing. This only affects gov funded agencies.

      @@jared3622Companies shouldn’t ever be guaranteed market shares…that only contributes to them not putting out the best product possible while staying in competition with other companies. When you know you have to either deliver good products that people/agencies want and need, or fail…that makes you work harder. Otherwise you become a “subsidized” entity that does just enough to keep getting your stipend. My agency has spent over $700,000 in DJI and Autel products simply because they work every time. Until Skydio came out with the X10, there wasn’t any US company that had anything comparable to what our DJI M300’ M350’s and Autel’s Dragonfish can provide. We just did a demo with Skydio and will be purchasing 5 of their X10’s in the near future, but that is because we are often asked to assist either the local Air Force base or Army National Guard and can’t do so directly overhead the bases/posts with foreign drones. I’m not only law eno forcement, but prior military and would like nothing more than to support American companies…but only if they deserve it because they’re providing quality products.

      @@jared3622 They have a chance. Banning another product is not the correct move. I would imagine the amount of money they have given to lobbyists is not an inconsequential amount which could have been used on development.

    This almost happened to me yesterday while flying my Air 3. The good thing was that I got a notification that a manned aircraft was in my vicinity. I had to descend 150ft into the trees to avoid any disaster. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the jet fighter approaching fast while creating a hyper-lapse video at 100m height. Maintaining VLOS and listening in for nearby aircraft is a non-negotiable rule of flying safely.

    I say that drone owners get the word out to boycott Skydio and then start a petition to remove any Skydio representatives from the government agencies. It's sad that a big company can throw their muscle around because they can't build a product good enough to compete in the market.

    Being a drone pilot myself I also fly in uncontrolled airspace near a heliport. No matter what I’m doing I’m always listening to for that chopper. “Once I can hear it no, no matter the distance I’m expecting it to come my way, to me it’s in my airspace and”, if it does I’m familiar with the area overall so I have more than one landing location and safe hovering spots near trees or something.

    The Utah story was what they call a “cyber kidnapping”. They send a digital ransom note to the family and told the kid to leave his home until the ransom is paid, they threatened the family to make him comply. Law enforcement knew he was camping somewhere because they had footage of him buying camping gear. Which is unusual this time of year to go tent camping. A lot of law enforcement and search and rescue here in Utah are using drones, we have a huge tourist industry for the outdoors and makes sense because of the terrain here.

    Here we go! First they wanted us to register the drone, with a fee of course. Then they wanted us to get RFID, "for safety". Now the want to get rid of competition. Next thing your gonna have to do is put a code in the drone from ATC to take off or the firmware won't let the drone off the ground. I like drones because I can get the view without crashing in flames. It's soon not to be worth it anymore. I'm not using RFID either, unless it's free. Let me know where to order it from.

    • @wolfpack4694
      @wolfpack4694 9 місяців тому +13

      common misconception/myth. ATC often requests helicopter drivers to stay very low and well out of the traffic pattern for other manned traffic separation purposes. In the most recent one, yes there have been others, according to news reports, it was an air tour operator giving rides around the speedway area near one of the runways. HEMS and LE often are below 500' for other, good reasons too. Plus, military folks like I used to be (Air Cav) often fly low too. Then there are Ag aircraft and ultralights to watch out for. It's a myth that manned traffic will never be below 500'. I know from personal experience, having done it often when I flew OH-058s.

I think they are using the radar to look into the forest for heat signatures of people.
      I do have a question about government helicopters, one day, I was using the app to look around before flying to make sure no one was in the airspace and getting ready for take off and there was no one around. Then, all of a sudden, a helicopter appeared (I do not know what kind it was, it was not painted the color of Border Patrol -- it was a black-painted color) and flew around and left the area, but never showed up on the app. What was that??!! Happy New Year to the PI Team! The drone/helicopter collision deeply concerns me. Apparently the drone pilot was in Class G airspace and was at 120 feet elevation. He was flying legally and for his work. Then in pops a a Robinson and there is a serious collision that could have very easily brought the helo down. Thank God this was not the case. My point is, I have been in that situation where I was in Class G airspace and while flying, here comes a life flight helo out of nowhere flying just above the treetops. It was not in my line of sight. Thankfully I had my wife spotting and she heard it in time, but I still had to ditch my drone. It shook me up so bad, I didn't fly for a few weeks afterward. What the heck are we supposed to do? In this case the drone pilot was where he was allowed as well as (it seems like) the Robinson pilot. I hope we hear how the FAA sees/rules on this, as it seems to me this is in a murky area. I would really like to hear some other opinions on this, as it seems to me, this kind of collision will happen again, sadly. I did read the comments below, but is there definitive protocol on this?

But another question is how did the drone pilot not see or hear the helicopter coming (assuming he was flying line-of-sight and could see his drone)?
