  • Hey everyone, I frequently receive the question on how to prevent a laid-off swing. Many tend to concentrate on the clubhead to address this issue, but in reality, fixing it involves focusing on a different aspect of the club. Check out this video where I'll guide you on fixing this problem. Hope you find it helpful and enjoy!

    Wow! This is exactly the information I needed! I felt like no matter what my hand path was the result was always an out to in swing. I never thought where the club laid at the top mattered only where the club face was pointing.
    I swear to god, if this finally allows me to hit the shot shape I want I’m going to cry!

    This is a great explanation. I looked at the position of my club at the top today, using your idea here, and saw that it wasn’t on plane. I played in the cub comp and tried to make an adjustment. The difference was quite amazing - much better shots. So thanks Chris, I am really pleased. There were immediate improvements with irons and driver. However, the biggest improvement was with fairway woods!

    Excellent video !!!. Have never had how the shaft alignment at the top affects the movement of the club head on the way down explained like this before. It means a big difference of whether or not you are fighting the weight of the club on the way down and where that weight takes the club in relation to the swing path.

    great explanation Chris. I, like so many, suffer from an erratic start line and I know that I'm at least a little "laid" off which might account for over active hands, one thing leading to another. I can't wait to hit the range. Thanks again.

    Definitely will try and get into that position at the top, I have always laid the club off especially with the longer clubs, I can get away with the shorter shafted clubs as it is easier to drop the club on a better line. This video has opened my eyes, thank you.

      That makes sense, shorter clubs are often more forgiving but those pesky long clubs can be tricky 😁

    Chris, your videos are awesome, thanks for the help. Can you do a video or comment on the lead elbow position in the setup? If you follow hogan, you would point the elbows towards the hips yet I watched a video recently that advocated internal rotation of the lead arm so that the elbow points towards the target. My natural setup is a strong left grip but lead elbow pointing towards the hip. If I internally rotate the arm towards the target, the takeaway feels more solid and it feels like the takeaway gets on plane almost automatically. What are your thoughts on the lead elbow position in the setup?

    Chris, thank you for the excellent video. One question. I've been struggling with a bit of a slice on my driver. Therefore I have been focussing on shallowing out my shaft in the downswing. In previous videos you gave the tip to let the weight of the driver head sort of 'fall down a bit' just before you start your downswing. This video seems to contradict that a bit. Can you explain ?

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  3 місяці тому

      Hey, to be honest I probably should have explained this a little better in the video. You are correct that as you begin down shallowing the shaft is ideal, letting the driver head fall is a great feel. If the shaft is too shallow too early, as in the top of the swing like these examples, then the club wants to steepen, so touch to shallow it. A great visual, although extreme, would be Matt Wolfe, very steep at the top so the momentum of the club wants to shallow, a great move. In these swings physics is trying to steepens the club, so hard to work against that. Do essentially it’s timing, when is the club shallow, too early in these cases, hope that helps

    Chris, by laying the club flat, does that also decrease clubhead speed? I believe so, I'm just not sure why. Maybe because the clubhead is fighting gravity when it tips "up" at the start of downswing? So a proper backswing would also greatly increase clubhead speed, right? Maybe because it is just more efficient from the start. I'd love to know why/how if you can explain. It seems a clubhead "across the line" would be much better for clubhead speed since it work with gravity.

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  3 місяці тому

      It can do yes, if the club is a little flatter later in the downswing it can in some cases increase speed, but laid off at the top like this is likely to cause a reduction is speed as you say

    • @dj-flights7376
      @dj-flights7376 3 місяці тому

      @@ChrisRyanGolf Thank you Chris, it seems to make sense that laying it flat at the top will decrease club head speed. I am working hard to fix my backswing this winter. I actually try to point the back of the handle halfway between the ball and my toe line (at a spot a few feet off to my right). That helps me more than the line extended behind the ball, I need the more exaggerated target. I also imagine pointing my left shoulder at that spot too, it helps get me to sync everything up as a backswing thought.

      @@kevinbeardsworth3756 but he is incredibly skilled, he knows exactly where impact is and knows how to get there, so to a point I would agree, give him any position at the top and he’ll hit decent shots, due to skill. An average golfer off high teens or low 20’s who plays once a week with little practice has no where near the same skill level, so for them, in my opinion, the easiest way to make a good downswing is to start that form a pretty functional top of the backswing, and I’ve seen that over the last 20years, most golfers simply don’t have the skill level to find impact from any position

      @@ChrisRyanGolf Totally agree Chris. I'm a mid handicapper (10 index) and a poor backswing, not 'on plane' can send the ball almost anywhere. I still don't have the skill to 'rescue it' and frankly, I don't want to need to.
