Wouldn't such an application of heat be bad for the scalpel blade, i.e. Dulling the edge, potentially changing the crystalline structure of the metal and making it either more brittle or softer (meaning that it doesn't retain a sharp edge), etc....? If it's just for "home" use (hobbies and/or non-microscopic level stuff), it should be fine, but for scientific and/or medical purposes, I'm sure that there are other ways to sterilize non-disposable scalpels without using such high levels of heat

Any bipolar cap, 0.1uF - 1uF, should work fine, as long as the voltage rating is above that of your input voltage. I'd say at least double. The difference in capacitance value will be seen in the amount of time needed to heat your sample object. Your 1.2uF cap will probably work fine, it'll just take quite a bit longer to heat up your sample. Do not use an electrolytic cap... Unless you like indoor fireworks.

How does the coil generate the heat. Fascinating concept without the need for a blow torch. 👍
The coil is basically a spiral which agitates the already prealigned light entities within the metals enough to heat it.

Just use a 0.5 ohm resistor (300W) connected to the 12 volts and place it in the cup. No waste heat in the circuit. all the heat goes into your coffee

The 2SC5200 is an NPN bipolar transistor rated at 230 volts 15 amps. The package is the same and these days it is mostly mosfets that are seen.
