Fires of Hate: How the Nazis Targeted Books and Free Thinking

  • Beginning in May 1933, university students in Nazi clubs across Germany orchestrated a destructive campaign to burn thousands of books and other materials considered “un-German.” The works of Jewish writers including Sigmund Freud and political activists such as Helen Keller were among countless others scorched in festive ceremonies celebrating Nazi ideology. Even children's books were destroyed.
    The Nazi regime’s early efforts to control the thoughts and lives of its citizens foreshadowed more brutal threats on the horizon. As campaigns to ban books and control information resurface today, we invite you to join us for this timely program.
    Guests
    Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Director, American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom
    Lindsay MacNeill, Historian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
    Host
    Dr. Edna Friedberg, Historian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

    My daughter was 8 when she read the book about Ruby and watched the movie. It did not damaged her whatsoever. My granddaughter was 11 when we took her to the Holocaust museum in NY. It is important to teach history.

    I am a Romani artist living in the US. How can my art help combat this socially, as I feel deeply tied to the Porrajmos and the prevention of further genocide in my small, small realm of influence?

      @frank caciques; You can help prevent genocide by tolerance and by not harboring any form of racial hatred in your heart. Love one another, as Jesus Christ, the begotten Son of God , commanded. If you truly love your neighbor as yourself, you would never want to kill him or do anything else to hurt him.

    One of the best programs myself and family watched, was Walton’s Mountain. Book burning had come to their community. John boy, spoke up. He picked up a book that had just been tossed on the pile. One of the ladies in the group was German. John boy asked her to come up and read the first page of the book. It started out in the beginning god created the world. Yep! It was the Bible. The entire community lowered their heads and walked away. No books were burned. John boy was able to put the books back into the school and give back others to his neighbors. I bring this up because maybe if these parents could watch this episode they would realize that this is wrong. I was a library aide in a small town my freshman and sophomore years of high school. My love of reading started there. I started with Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys and grew from there. I’m 70 years old now, in home hospice care and my heart breaks for the little ones as they grow up.❤

    I find the burning of books,music and other printed matter as being sad as well as darft because if there is a limitation to what children and young adults should be able to read then there might also be a limited abillity to think for themselves,I suppose that its a way of imposing power over others but it might in fact have the completely opposit influence because if they ban certain books essays and other printed matter children and young adults will want to read the forbidden books and then they might ask questions that any kind of regime will fear.I think books about philosophy and ethics should be taught in all schools for all ages in order to create tolerance among all peoples regardless of their backgrounds as well as religions and politics. The more people learn the more they know just how little they know.

    The same thing which the Nazis did in Germany could be happening in the U.S. already. We must guard against the blinding effect of hatred throughout the world. The burning of controversial books may lead us to the very same path that Germany went down in the 1930s.

      What they're never going to tell you, is that the books that were burned were promoting homosexuality and becoming transgender. The same exact people, that tried to push this in Germany in order to lower German's birth rates, are doing the exact same thing in America/all of the West, to lower Europeans birthrates. The same people are doing the same exact thing they tried in Germany in America/all of the West now, over here they've only had more success with getting people to follow their agenda. These videos are absolutely full of fabrications, their attempts to cover up, a racist agenda, against Europeans and they try to make themselves, look like victims. You don't get kicked out of over 109 Countries, of all different languages, throughout Countries, Kingdoms and Empires, throughout your entire history, unless you're doing something wrong. People refuse to comprehend, these same reactions keep happening, over and over again, because these people are trying to force unwanted things on other people, that benefit themselves and target other people. That's why this happens, it doesn't happen for absolutely no reason as they claim, it happens because they're trying to force an agenda on other people, who don't want to abide by it. Then, there's backlash, entirely due to their actions. If they left people alone and stopped trying to force this stuff on other people (specifically, Europeans in the West), this wouldn't happen anymore. We don't want things about 53 different genders, being forced upon our people/children, that plummets our birth rates. We want to be left alone. It's that simple. That doesn't make us "racists", "supremacists" or any of these other fabrications, you guys want to conjure up. We're too intelligent to fully accept agendas, that you guys try to force upon us. This is pushed with malicious intent, then when your people are called out & receive backlash, you want to whine and claim its "Anti-Semitism." When writings emphatically convey, this is being used as a tool, along with illegal immigration (that's being funded, into ONLY European-Western Countries & nowhere else on Earth), to FORCE Europeans into a minority, you can be certain, it will see resistance. The authors of these appalling books, always magically have the same background and just by chance, they're always pushed in European-Western Countries. If you want to teach something, educate people on who actually owned all of the Slave Ships and how White Americans, never enslaved the people in America and were just blamed, by the actual slave owners. Let's discuss Holodomor, The Bolshevik Revolution, Assassination of Czar Nicholas II of Russia, Assassination of Ernst Edward vom Rath (this caused Kristallnact) and other racist atrocities, against Europeans.

    While I agree with the overall sentiment of the video, I find it odd that some statements made in this video elude to the idea that Nazi's were in conflict with socialism. The full name of their political party means National Socialist German Worker's party. The "zi" of Nazi comes from the German word for socialist.

    • @markhughes7927
      @markhughes7927 2 роки тому +1

      Yes! an embarrassing reminder always of the ultimate/true face of state socialism - and so the fig-leaf of ‘fascism’ since WW2. The latter I take to be a kind of dominion by an individual within the state but socialism being the ‘state almighty’.

    • @Aurelian369_
      @Aurelian369_ 2 роки тому

      I believe they renamed themselves to the National Socialist German Worker’s Party in order to explicitly gain political support among germans. In practice Hitler frequently railed against “Judeo-Bolshevism” and I doubt Nazi Germany, despite including considerable state-directed economic planning planned ever to establish a socialist economy
