  • The FBI and CIA suspected Russia had a dangerous spy working in the US in the early 1990s. But who was it? The newest book in Bryan Denson’s “FBI Files” series for younger readers Catching a Russian Spy: Agent Leslie G. Wiser Jr. and the Case of Aldrich Ames explores the race to uncover the traitor.
Denson will be joined by Leslie Wiser, Jr., the agent who ran the Ames operation out of the Washington Metropolitan Field Office, and Sandy Grimes, a CIA officer who was determined to find the evidence that Ames was spying. Together they will explain how Ames betrayed his country, caused US assets to be killed, and ultimately was brought to justice.

Great presentation, mics need to be much closer to speakers to capture audio properly. Perhaps lapel mics would have been better or have speakers sit closer to mics. Appreciate these presentations outside of this challenge.

Who notified Aimes about all the Russian assets and did he have a right and the need to know about each and every one of them in is line of work and what' information did he need. Was there an offering of surplus information.
Was the CIA sloppy in offering the links to Aimes?

Ames starting getting people killed in 1985, if not sooner. He was arrested in 1994. I cannot figure out when he came back from Italy -- she said it was the early 1990s? How many people had access to all of the case files of the agents he had killed? I just cannot understand why they didn't catch him sooner -- he was sloppy and extremely careless -- he was buying houses for $500,000 cash and Jaguars for cash . . . and supposedly he was dirt poor. Why was he so poor? Imagine the damage he did our country over those 9 years (he may have started earlier.) After the first agents were killed -- why did they allow him to kill at least 8 more? There may be good reasons, but they aren't giving us any in their video, or in Sandy's other video I watched. Why did they assign a junior and inexperienced person to run this "Catch the Mole" operation on the FBI side and a woman who didn't even have an office to run it on the CIA side? Wasn't this the single most important operation at that time? Why did the first FBI report NOT report that Ames was the mole, even though Jeanne and her team had decided he was? How come they aren't talking about this? Doesn't it seem like someone -- very high up -- was doing everything possible to protect Ames and sabotage this operation? (Maybe the same person or people who also protected Hansen for 20 years?)

He got away with it for so long because he had help from the KGB.
Edit: and the reason why they had someone lower on the totem pole investigate him is pretty self explanatory. Despite what you’ve read Ames was no idiot he was a master spy if he was as incompetent as he’s made out to be how could he have done so much damage? Or why would the KGB bother recruiting & employing him? They knew who was who and wouldn’t bother with a dunce.

@@Tommy2shoe811 -- I am not so sure -- The Russians had nothing to lose by working with a dunce -- as long as he kept giving them good intel. If he got himself caught it was not hurting them at all. A master spy would not be buying expensive houses and cars for cash with no visible means of income. There have been hundreds of master spies -- they are the ones we don't know about. ;-) How COULD he have done so much damage -- and he just one of many who operated for 20 years, leaving red flags all over the place . . .there was Hansen at the FBI, and others . . . either the agencies are beyond incompetent, and I assume they are, and/or they are infiltrated (or were) at the top and these double agents were permitted to keep working with Russians. Because various people came forward, in both cases, through the years --voicing their concerns, but they were always ignored, With the lives of our covert agents at risk, and our top-classified secret -- why and how could these concerns e ignored --why would they not at least be looked into? If that had been done, they would have uncovered more suspicious activity and caught these people. FDR had Russian agents working with him, right in the White House . . .our government has always been infiltrated, and probably still is. It just annoys me when all these people write their books and brag about catching them -- 20 YEARS later! After so many of our agents were exposed and killed and secrets were given away! They should be writing books about what fools they are, not what heroes they are. Except for that one really young newbie guy who helped catch Hansen -- he has an excuse because he was a brand new agent and he did a good job.

Love your interviews. I've watched several now. However, for the love of God, get new chairs for your guests. I'm sure the red chairs seemed like a good idea in terms of style and aesthetics, but once in use, it becomes clear they are not working well. Your guests look so uncomfortable, particularly the women. Audio seems to be a consistent problem. Wireless lavs might be a good option. Additionally, there seems to be no effort to match the color between the two cameras. Again, your guests are wonderful. With a few adjustments, you can up your production value to match the quality of your guests.

It's no conspiracy, either, it's pretty easy to verify they knew and allowed it to be carried out. Why didn't they tell us? They have one of the most "successful" intelligence gathering operations, but only when it's beneficial to them. Google Dancing Israelis, they were here to capture the attack of video. Disgusting

You're " supposed " to love your country- why should you be " given " anything not to run " to the other side "? I can say for sure that the fact that Uncle Joe, Aunt Nancy and their clowns are behaving like the corrupt French royalty with no sense of accountability or personal responsibility is NOT helping anyone's loyalty.
