Really useful video. Thanks for comparing the two. It helped me make up my mind and I’ve now just purchased the Neewer phone cage through Amazon and look forward to using it in my photography.
I have both and the Neewer feels better in my hand because of the curved edges. Smallrig's edges feel sharper and rougher. I hate having to change the backplates for the Smallrig but I also hate the rotating handles of Neewer. If only Smallrig has curved edges and had a quick release backplate like the Neewer, it would be perfect. Smallrig has a new universal cage coming out in July that has a SSD in the handle grip and I believe focus/zoom wheels too. Pre-order starts in July I believe.
Thanks for the info…I purchased the Neewer cage, 2 grips, and Magnetic tripod through your portal using the link you provided.. I also subscribed to your channel and I’m looking forward to see the rest of your content. I use my phone and my GoPro for all my UA-cam videos I like to pack light..and I also use Artlist.. I’m sure I’ll be learning more through your videos. Thank you.
Update: got the kit. Only difference between the 16 and 15 cage is the addition of a removable rubber cover for the new camera control button. It’s all very solid quality and I’m excited to get busy once my lenses get here!
Great comparison review, Benett! Have you tried connecting a usb-c cable (to connect an ssd for attached recording) to the phone through the Neewer cage? I saw a previous review of the older Neewer cage and you needed an adapter with a longer connection end because a typical usb-c cable end could not be securely connected into the phone.
Wow. Newer looked great up until the handles start giving in to the weight. that looks like in time it will break, even if you're not putting a lot of weight on it. can you replace the handles or is the attachement proprietary? thx
When you travel, are you taking a cage so you can have vnd, external SSD etc. and just getting your shots handled or are you taking a gimbal? I noticed in most vids when you shoot gimbal, you run it barebones with no accessories. I have a trip coming up in December to Germany and want to capture it the best I can! Also, which gimbal has been your favorite recently. OM6, flow pro, or hohem v3?
so you use an 82mm filter for your main traditional camera, for my smartphone I use 67mm filters for everyday use, while I use 77mm filters for filmmaking.
Well done Benett - just one question… would a 67mm VND on the Neewer cage cause vignetting on the wide angle iPhone lens? Thanks again for the honest and complete review 👍🏻
Do you suggest getting one of these cages over the "MC4 Smallrig cage" that you recommended a few months ago in the "Turn your iPhone 15 Pro Max into a Pro Camera" video that you made?
Your video actually convinced me to get the Neewer version when I’ve been just waiting for the time to get the Smallrig. Sadly the way Neewer sells their products, in the UK at least, is terrible and I can’t even find any of this to buy it. It’s all over the place, with most places just listing the old gen 1 version or the cage on its own,or a single handle I don’t know is actually compatible. I can’t just simply buy the latest 2 handled Bluetooth version. Smallrig do this job of sales and support so well, I can buy theirs easily from a dozen places to be delivered tomorrow. Their product line is clearer and easier to find and buy. Shame, as the Neewer version, if you can find all the separate parts, does look better. If anyone in the uk can just post a link to where you buy this Neewer version, I’ll get it!
Thank you for a very interesting review. For me, it's the filter adapter and rotating handles which sets the Neewer apart. I also wonder if the new handles are compatible with NATO rails. If they are it might be possible to use old Smallrig NATO rail handles with the Neewer cage which could be a money saver.
After comparing several options, I was about to buy the Neewer G1, but it didn’t fully convince me. Just in time, the new generation of Neewer cages (G2) was released, which surpasses the SmallRig in many aspects. I’ve already ordered it and also recommend considering the Hagibis memory (compatible with M.2 memory), which is also MagSafe compatible. Now, I just need the ND filter and the DJI stabilizer handle.
The double grip system of the Neewer, let's put it that way, is an additional safety measure. It is well known that the grip system of SmallRig is unsafe. Let's check the comparison of neewer.
I have both of them for s24ultra I like Neweer, because of accessoires. On Neweer you can attach threaded one and magnetic filter Neweer filter set com with magnetic ring that attached to the plate and use the magnetic filters. Neweer lighter than smallrig . Smallrig handle has remote, but i have remote with zooming capacity from ulanzi and Huawei handheld tripods.
Hey guys, may I know if the rig’s handle can be tighten further so that it doesn’t rotate when heavier accessories are attached to the phone horizontally. Thanks for the advice
I had the green one for my 15 pro max but now that I have the 16 pro max now, I think the “freewell” cage is an upgrade to this one. Still a small case to fit the iPhone but the handles rotate as well and have a build in 🤳 stick and tripod build into the other. If smallrig did this I would have stayed with the brand but have to move on the next one. Check it out! Smallrig is still a good brand though.
Hi hope you are well, was wondering if you would consider doing a video of the below - now that online media is moving towards a 50/50 of vertical and portrait is their a camera/or video device that can record both styles at the same time, without the 9:16 looking like it’s been zoomed in ? Thanks for any advice /tips
Does anyone know any dupes?😫 I’m going to Disneyland and I wanna vlog on log 4k 60fps but they don’t allow selfie sticks and idk what’s a good small tripod that’ll be allowed. This cage would be so perfect for me
I just got the Brandon Li Smallrig cage and can't get my phone to fit into it - am I being an idiot?! It goes most of the way but the last 1-2cms it's stuck fast and won't go any further.
Hey man do you just use your iPhone 15 pro max and a iPad to do all your videos like you have no camera or computer because if you only use those 2 I’m digging it
@Benett Since you have both the Neewer and Smallrig cages can you check if the handles from the Smallrig can fit into the Neewer phone cage and vice versa? I was thinking I like the Neewer phone cage itself but the handles of the small rig seem better and wanted to know if I can mix and match between the two companies like this? Or if I got one grip thats from Neewer and one grip thats from Smallrig. Any idea about the ability to interchange between these two quick release grips?
Since you own both Smallrig and Newer cages, can you just see if the Smallrig handles can attach to the Neewer? If so that would be the best of both worlds! Really interested to see if it would work
i understand the IP15 pro is slighty different in buttons and camera plate size , but can my IP13 pro fit in that cage ? ( not minding button locations )
Honestly I don’t like using the 1.55x anamorphic lenses because I don’t need too much widescreen, I like using the 1.33x anamorphic lens that’s a perfect aspect ratio for me, I have moment’s 1.33x anamorphic T series lenses Gold and Blue flare, plus their filter adapter too add filters to the lenses
Can those Smallrig handles work on the Neweer ?!? I saw at NAB 2024 some new handles that have 2 fast grip points and a 2280 nvme ssd inside the handle for extra memory.
@@BenettGraezer no problem man, I’m always on the lookout, I just wish there was a magnetic to threaded filter adapter for when we don’t have any magnetic filters and only threaded filter for small rig
No, SmallRig's lens backplates are not compatible with NEEWER cage. If you get the 17mm backplate, you can use SANDMARC lenses. Shiftcam lenses have a 12mm thread, and I don't think they have backplates for that size.
@@BenettGraezer so I can't use all of them together even with Cage? Can you tell me which Cage will be best I'm going to make a Vlogging right where I'll use Wide angle lens and ND filter together and I will add SSD with mic For Vlogging setup
I chosen Neewer cage after this review and first of all... doesn't fit to Freewell lenses... T-mount is different between suppliers, additionally is very delicated and is easy to scrach this cage... Additionally quality is not top, one of the gip has black another silver switch and is not possible to lock properly... what a crap... I am disappointed, I'll return to supplier this cage.

Where can I find details about the new small rig universal cage that's coming out? Didnt see anything about it
i tested both too and have to say overall the new NEEWER cage is the best one
Thank you very much! This video helps me to choose newer cage! Great video 🎉

khronos cage?
Great vid!
Is there no way then to use an ND filter and magsafe at the same time on the neewer?
Definitely going neewer. Whenever they come out with a case for the 16s.
