My interpretation of it was the piano being drowned out by the darkness so it kinda becomes twisted, haunted, and unnatural that it's playing. At least...that's how creeped out I felt as a kid lol.

I never owned a Mega CD back in the day, so I was happy to finally play on my iPhone back in 2010. Man, the JP/Eur soundtrack gripped me from the start. It's no wonder that Tee Lopez was inspired when composing for Sonic Mania. Especially when hearing Studiopolis Acts 1 and 2. Sonic CD ost will forever be goated.

The US ost is pretty good as well but in its own way. I always separate them like this: JP focuses more on the environment and making a sound that fits how cool it looks while the US one focuses more on how Sonic might feel. Stardust Speedway present is my favorite one from the US OST and it really sounds like how you would feel going outside in the big city at night and forgetting the path to home while walking alone. Everything just goes through your head at a rapid paste while also feeling like time has stopped existing
I love both the JP and US soundtrack. And my favorite theme in the whole game is Wacky Workbench Present US. Grooviest song in the US OST, period. (Btw Metallic Madness Present US is underrated af)
My fave track off the soundtrack is Quartz Quadrant Present with Metallic Madness Present and Tidal Tempest Past in close runner up. It’s just such a ridiculously good track. The piano, the horns, the synths, the drum patterns. It’s absolutely perfect in every way shape and form. I used to load up the level and just have Sonic stand there with minimal input just so I could hear the song on constant loop. It’s magical. Undoubtedly the best OST in the franchise next to Unleashed
The only thing I don’t understand with the jp ost is why they didn’t stick with the beta boss music because for some reason it’s better than the final version. But other than that sonic cd’s ost is one of the best in video game history.
My top 3 favorite CD songs are: 3. Metallic Madness present: When I hear this I just feel like I’m dancing with a bunch of robots. It’s so funky but also a little intimidating with how metallic it sounds( Haha I said the name) but I also love that solo in the middle of the song. 2. Tidal Tempest present: like you said this was ahead of its time. This is probably one of the most chill song in the game and I love it. The piano goes crazy with the drums in this one. 1. Quartz quadrant present and Stardust speedway Bad future: I love both these songs to DEATH. SSBF is one of my fav sonic songs of all time, it’s so intense but so cool at the same time. It fits perfectly with the metal sonic race and is just a bop. Quartz quadrant however, has so much in the song. It starts off fast and intense and makes you wanna get rest to run. But then it transitions into a more uplifting part that’s still fast but happy. This whole soundtrack is incredible and it’s my fav Sonic soundtrack EVER.
I can't believe I just found this video, I'm 1 minute in and I already agree. There's only 2 games in existence that have a soundtrack so good that without no exaggeration I love every single track in it those are pokemon G/S/C versions and Sonic CD Jp (FF crystal chronicles comes close but there's 1 or 2 tracks I find to be just ok. Every single track in the JP ost is amazing, I just can't put it into words, I still listen to it till this day and I still consider it my favorite Sonic ost (followed by adventure 1). And just because I know there's a bunch of people who people who don't like the game, I also like the game, it's pretty good.

Until years later at the age of 11, my brother got a new computer that couldn't play sonic CD but we found it on UA-cam and fell in love with both us sound track and jap sound track. We listen to them every day for years!. At the age of 13 I had fl studio and we found a website full with midi files of sonic CD music and I use to do remixes.

To this day I am extremely pissed off that during that live performance ceremony they didn’t adapt any of the Sonic CD JP songs, not even anyone of the US tracks.
