Too many people out there unaware of the severity of the conditions. Your common sense and experience keeps you safe. Good call to shut down.
When it is bad weather go as slow as you feel safe, not what the signs say... Going posted speed will only get you in a ditch and risk your load... Good idea to shut down in a safe area...Give DOT time to get the interstates then hwy then county roads serviced...
another thing that gets new drivers is upper management or whoever they have to report to in conditions like these. they will try to push you to keep driving when they know its not safe and the driver has already told them that they're uncomfortable. i`ve been there. you are on the verge of losing your job because you want to stay alive.
TMC doesn't push you to drive, you can shut down if you feel unsafe and they won't harass you. @juskiiiiiii

I don't care how far behind schedule I am, as long as I get there safely. I've pulled over plenty of times and quit driving when conditions are bad.
Best not to set out in the first place with that kind of load in those kinds of conditions.

The fact that these other truck drivers are blowing right past you just baffles me. Those are the ones that are gonna cause an accident and end up on the side of the road. Be safe out there.
People complain that drivers don't have radios in their trucks anymore but this is the stuff we hear.. Nice save by the way! Orwell had a diamond factory in it for a bit haha.

Yep. I get funny looks and couldn't care less. Five minutes at the truck stop and it's obvious what you're gonna hear on those things 99% of the time -- nothing but garbage. Rather run solo and quiet.

It's not a huge cabover, just a regular ol cabover. Not any bigger than the others that are left. It's actually small compared to modern trucks.

Is a cab-over in these conditions particularly any different to a conventional truck? Is it something to do with the wheelbase generally being smaller on average?

Nice job using the trailer brakes to assist in stopping that skid. All that weight and momentum is a force to be reckoned with on ice.

The basic rule. always keep your vehicle under your full control
even in the carolinas/ georgia, you deal with freezing rain/ ice rather deal with snow covered roads than the ice
Yeah, snow isn't too much of a problem, as usually the weight of the truck will assure you have at least some grip. No so luck with Ice and then the sheer mass just pushes you on, usually in a direction you DON'T want to go.
When I was OTR, if I couldn't SAFELY maintain 45mph, I pulled it over till it cleared...

You on the cb is quite the hollar n hoot, but some guys just love to hear themselves. I stay pretty quiet unless i see somethin shiney or blowing clouds. Its ungodly aweful trying to decifer the spanish but our state troopers chip in and provide some hilarious comentary.
Nothing beats coffee for a wake up call except for a good pucker and some shorts skids. Great example of keeping calm and under control and NOT panicking. Most drivers would have stepped on the tractor brakes harder complicating the situation further.
25 years I spent behind the wheel, I was starting to feel the itch, but this vid scratched that real quick.

Safety First and if they don't like it we will pass them in the ditch further up! Always drive according to ones ability's and the weight and all the factors involved. We all want to make it home.

Im not even driving but I ate my seat on that bridge, good job keeping it together! Ice SUCKS!
Just a hint from a Canadian driving on ice roads of the Arctic Ocean. When you pull in to stop and it’s below freezing keep moving back and forth every couple of minutes to cool down your breaks for about 15-20 minutes and then only apply your tractor brake never your trailer
I had to figure that one out the hard way.......I spent almost an hour at the TA in Calgary crawling around under my trailer beating on my brake drums with a hammer.....I learned to drag my brakes the last hundred yards before parking then using only the tractor parking brakes....... When the engine is going to idle all night anyway, air pressure isn't an issue.
It's information like this that makes the years of experience valuable...... I learned more cussing under that trailer than I could ever have learned out of a book.

I agree the older I get the more I hate winter driving.
My daughter and son-in-law from 2 states east of me rented a house so we could have a family thanksgiving on Friday. Our town got over 3 foot of snow that weekend east of Lake Ontario (30 miles away they got 5 feet of snow). I didn't want to drive the 12 miles to their house. My son-in-law had to run errands in town and I agreed to ride up ands return Saturday. Let me say the round trip ride was adventurous.
We are forecasted to get another possible 2 feet of snow from Wed PM thru Friday PM.

Ultimately it’s your choice to pull off and stop til the roads were cleared and treated. I probably would have done the same thing.
I always follow my gut instinct. It has kept me safe for 28 years so far. If the drivers don’t like my speed, they can always go around. Nothing I do is worth hurting myself or the motoring public..

I think you made the right call for sure. 28 might have been ok just because Washington county is SIGNIFICANTLY better than basically everyone else (night and day when you go from FDL Co. to WashCo.). That first hill, which I’m pretty sure is what you were talking about) would have been interesting. I think going down to Richfield would have definitely been a no go.

Old timer once told me to never set my tractor trailer breaks in a bad weather.Saves time having to get under and hammer loose the ice on the brakes
Unless your heavy. If your heavy you set truck and trailer brakes and not be lazy about it

If that was on the 5th, I was just a little north of you, had a moderate sized load(15'10" tall, 13' wide, 125k gross) coming out of Green Bay, got just to Appleton when this hit and it got slick fast, my convoy stopped at WI-26 south of Oshkosh and waited it out(we were permitted down 26 to 151 and off to I-39)

I'm a diesel tech for a huge fleet and this kind of weather and those kinds of breakdowns make the start of winter a headache. I had 7 days of pto left this year and decided ill take a nice long break before Christmas to try and avoid having to do road service in this wet slop we get this time of year. I'll deal with fuel gel and brake freezing when its -20 all day any day but having to lay in the wet slop when its 25-30 is just miserable. (EDIT- also having to drive to calls in this sucks too as is shown in your video.)

Your skid reminds me one time I had a R model Mack short wheelbase with a 50 ton hyster lowboy and a Komatsu excavator on the back. The trailer was a mechanical folding neck so you had to run a winch line from the truck, anyway I forgot after I hooked up, I forgot to put slack in the winch line, and I went to go around a curve. Needless to say it didn’t turn too sharp because the winch line was kinda tight and… short truck heavy load pushed me across the lane of the highway. Moral of the story is a short truck and heavy loads can be fun sometimes. Or in my case being a dummy and forgetting to put slack in the winch line, ha ha!
I damn sure do not miss winter 🥶 driving. Use to run a route from Ohio to Fresno and would endure it either coming or going! Y’all be safe out there. 🚛

That was a good call to shut it down with those weather conditions and that much weight. I also was driving in that stuff too and coming down from St. Germain empty wasn’t fun either to that same rest area you were at and the time I got there wouldn’t be the right thing to bother you since there was no light on but I still would’ve came to in the morning after if you were still there but you took off an hour after I got there. It’s all good and I understand why you took off after watching this video. Safe travels and keep the rubber side down

I was headed up to Marshfield on 39 through this garbage monday, watched a daycab try to overtake another driver heading south, day cab got right to about even with the other truck and put both of them down in the sticks all tangled up.

I never understood why they dont have the axle weights on a board at the scale. You could pay for it right at the monitor. It would save so much time and money. No more having to run back and forth to check weight. Once you pay for it and get your print out you could just scan it if you have to re-weigh.
That's the first truck I drove, 62 years old, still driving, run team with my wife.
