AWESOME Alex! As always. You're one of the few ones that explain all the details of the ATEM's workflow as simple, that everyone can understand. And, in my humble opinion, you're one of the BEST too! Have a Productive and Healthy Day!
Your initial advice on setting the live stream quality for recording had me pause the video and immediately check my config - yep, it was on "Streaming High" instead of "Hyperdeck High". Fixed now. Thanks for the tip!
I would love to see this same video but with others cameras besides the blackmagic ones (I know almost the same) but im sure some things will change… thank you.
Great tips! I have a tweak for the audio. We use a Zoom L-8 for audio mixing and run the Master Out into the ATEM Mini Extreme's Mic 1 input. You just have to be careful about how hot the audio mix is on the ATEM. We typically need to do a 10-17 dB reduction on the ATEM to prevent distortion.
Love this. Just what I needed. Great work Alex. Been a subscriber for a little while now. I'll definitely be doing a consulting session with you in the near future.
Alex, I just watched this excellent video and had a question. What if cameras are NOT Blackmagic, how would you replace the videos once the project created in the ATEM ISO is brought into Davinci Resolve? Is there a simple way to replace while maintaining AV sync?
Hey Mark great question. Unfortunately not. The workflow with BM cams and ATEM ISO works because they send a two way connection to eachother which includes timecode, so everything is sync. Other Cams don't do this with the ATEM. So unless you found a way to extract the timecode from the ATEM Mini and send it to all your cameras, there's no way for this this feature to work with non Blackmagic cameras. I hope this helps :)
So awesome to hear you found this useful and enjoyed the video :) Also where about's in Indonesia are you from... it's on my travel list for this year!
Nice to see my favorite golf channel getting some assistance from my favorite BMD channel - this is good stuff, Alex! Eager to see how this works out for Rick
Always enjoy your work Alex. One never knows what’s in store 😀 long gone are the days of periscope, it’s just great to see that you always kept up with the next new item and never let the grass grow under your feet. Keep it up Alex, regards from Dublin.
12:57 would have been great for me the 2 were graded the same. - with the 4k/50 was not so well colour, contrast, saturated than the 1080. Because that grade would have improved the original 1080 anyway… This was very helpful.. especially the workflow breakdown
Great video! I'm setting up almost the exact same kit in my studio and wasn't sure about the ATEM ISO + BRAW workflow so this was super-helpful to see a high level summary.
Incredibly helpful as I iterate on my own podcast setup. I am also building a portable studio setup that I can take with me on the road, so optimizing for efficiency (size x weight) and utility. I am currently using three Fujifilm cameras and external monitors for recording. They add up to be a lot of equipment, especially on the road. It seems it would make sense to replacing them with three Blackmagic cameras with Atem mini. Would you agree?
I just watched your other video on best buys in 2022--that updated my thinking to using 3 Hollyland Mars 4K Wireless Transmitters (one for each camera), connecting them to Atem for recording, and keeping the Fujifilm cameras. This update would make recording easier and more economical than replacing Fujis with Blackmagic cameras. Would love your feedback!
interested to know the reasoning behind choosing 6k raw for podcast recording, surely 4k prores 422 or 4444 would be more than enough for youtube & would allow for projects to be stored on the nas
Hey Kyle, the reason behind this is when you plug a BM camera into an ATEM Mini, it goes into a separate 'live' mode, that will only allow you to record in BRAW. Theres a number of benefits to this, but I agree there are definitely some cases where that much data just isn't needed, and having the option to record even at ProRes Proxy would be nice :)
2 Questions: 1) How important is it to record the program at highest Hyperdeck? I would think if the files are going to be replaced like proxies later, it would be more efficient to record the cut version and ISO's lower. 2) How big is the advantage of recording the in camera footage at 6k if the final render is 4k?
Well, this was awesome! So I was just about to abandon my BMPCC 6K Pro and 2 BMPCC 4Ks buuut now I'm way too intrigued after this video. I'm in the USA so instead of 50frames would I do 60fps?
Love the videos! Is there anyway that one can utilize recording directly from the Blackmagic Cam to a Nas itself via USB-C to ethernet so that the editors can go right to their PC and have access to these files on the Nas without even having to unplug a drive?
Brilliant video! As someone who slaves away doing manual multi-cam cuts, I’m looking into the world of switchers especially since we record a lot of live events. Is there a way to replicate this process but using Premiere Pro? Also, how would you go about colour grading your camera angles if the cuts are already made? In Premiere for example, I have a multi cam source sequence with all camera angles layered on track 1,2,3 etc… then a target of ‘editing’ sequence where I make the cuts. I colour grade all cameras in the source sequence which automatically reflects in the final edit. How would this work if the ATEM switchers already cut everything?
This is the first I've caught of your channel Alex. Really cool video. Great workflow. Something I'd be interested to hear about for these broadcast set ups is if you have any advice on how they should be archiving thier shows / edits. If the content was evergreen, and they've captured in 6k but output in 4k... would there be value in them exporting a consolidated project for future edits... or perhaps a second output of the final show file in a higher quality codec, maybe even with dedicated audio channels for music, vox, and other sound sources so they're not baked into a 2 channel. Would love to hear your thoughts on that or see those type of "future proofing" tips included in one of these type of videos.
I love this, man. It'd be almost exactly the same setup I want to use for my drumming stream/youtube channel. There's one step I'd like to improve on, though, and I wonder how this could be done: Say I wanted to be able to take the content, and edit, without needing to unplug the SSDs from the cameras and the ATEM. Could it work like, instead of having the separate SSDs, connecting all cameras + ATEM straight into the NAS, perhaps? And record it all directly into there? Maybe this would be an issue, like the NAS is then handling 4+ streams of data being fed to it, might be a little much, right. What would be the solution here?
Thanks for the really kind comment Matteo! I tend to just screen record on my Mac using Quicktime, and the way I magnify stuff or show my mouse pointer is with an app called Pro Mouse... I find that a lot quicker than trying to do all the punch ins and mouse click in post production :) Hope this helps
Great video Alex! Do you have to use Black Magic cameras to do this 4k syncing in post? Can you use other 4k cameras such as Canon R5 or Panasonic GH6?
Another excellent tutorial/explanation presentation Alex. You covered it all very well. We just won't talk about the cut at 12:26 though 😉 Sorry, I got a picky eye lol All in all, great work as usual mate.
Haha Nooooo that miss-cut has really triggered me 😂 Damn, there’s always something that slips in. Good spot! Glad you enjoyed the video though Bris and thanks again for all your support 👍
Awesome video Alex! I really like this format I was so excited for this until I figured out this setup will only work with the Blackmagic cameras. I use Lumix G mirrorless cameras that can't record and send HDMI at the same time, so I am stuck with either Recording 4K in the cameras (then editing it all together) or Livestreaming/Recording in 1080p on the ATEM Extreme ISO and being tied to the encoders quality (I will likely have to use "streaming low" as I stream via mobile data).
Thanks for the kind words about the video. Strange that you're not able to record in the cams at the same time as outputting via HDMI on the Lumix, i've never heard of this issue before. What happens when you try to do it... does the camera overheat and shut off?
you could use something like a BlackMagic Video Assist or something simular to record 4K out of the camera, and use a HDMI out on the recorder tos end the signal to the Atem Mini as well.
@@AlexPettitt Yeah, The HDMI output goes black and has the words "now recording video". I recently figured this out quite awkwardly on a gig as I said I would record 4K while streaming (as a backup), but as we were about to go live and I hit record on my cameras and the feeds on the ATEM went black. I quickly turned off the camera recording, started the ISO recording on the ATEM and started the show with a 40 second delay. Btw, your videos have been super helpful in helping me build my livestreaming kit, I recently implemented the Reaspberry Pi with Speedify for network bonding. I now also have a backup encoder (the URayTech HEVC H.265) which I use if I want to get better recording quality on the ATEM (Hyperdeck High).
@@sjoerdkessels712 That is true, but that would become quite costly, as I have a 3 camera setup, so I would need a Video Assist for each camera. If I get the budget (or there is a deal), I may implement that strategy (or I might get 3 BM Cinema Camera 4Ks)
@@KLRCAT This is only if you use the Lumix G7/G70 and older. From the Lumix G81 on, the camera sends the signal to the ATEM Mini also while recording. No black viewfinder anymore. I guess the processor of the very old Lumix cameras is not fast enough to do both at the same time without overheating, so Panasonic disabade it with these old cameras.
I was having this exact conversation with someone the other day! It would be great if the 6K's allowed you to record 4K Pro Res (event just proxy or RT) while plugged into the ATEM Mini. Working with 6K BRAW all the time really does eat up storage space.
That's a great video. Can the same be done with other cameras or only blackmagic ones? I understand that the only difference that one would need to go and press a button on all cameras, rather than doing it from the software, since it supports that option only for blackmagic cameras. Am I correct? Thank you!
I think so. As long as you have all camera mics enabled in all your cameras, you should be able to sync in DVR all different sources via the sound/waveform. No matter which brand.
Hi Alex we are a church in south Africa and would like to upgrade the quality our live streaming. Do you advise one to buy 3 black magic cinema camera 4k pro ?
There are benefits to both the studio and cinema camera line. I usually say to people that it depends on what you want to do with the cameras. If you know they are only ever going to be used in studio on tripods, then go with the Studio cams...but if you want flexibility to maybe film things out and about too, the pocket cinema line gives you that :) Hope this helps
@@AlexPettitt hi Alex, I am back again after buying the black magic cameras, and using the atem mini SDI switcher and streaming using the obs, I still what to improve the quality of the live streaming on UA-cam and Facebook any advise sir ? Regards
Did you find a solution to this? I'm looking to solve this as well. I just want to be able to replace the footage from the ISO with the original Sony 4K in-camera files and keep the edits.
great video! I have the same workflow with Sony Cameras but when I go to sync the audio for some reason half way through the video it gets thrown off. I don't know how i can slow the audio so that it fixes the delay of frames that happens while recording through an HDMI. I don't want to have to plug the audio into the blackmagic. I want to be able to record my audio in the rodecaster SD and sync in post. Any solution to this? Thank you
Fantastic content and well presented, thanks a lot for sharing!! Just a short follow-up question: If you'd need to bridge a large distances between the cameras and the ATEM/switcher using SDI cables due to a location's limitations, is it possible to use Blackmagic HDMI-to-SDI converters and still be able to control the cameras via the ATEM/switcher? Thanks a lot for your help! :)
Good question, for this you MUST use a BlackMagic Bi-Directional converter on each end and run 2 SDI cables per camera (one for in and the other for out). Then it will work. The other option (depending on length needed) is to look at optical HDMI cables. You can usually get these up to 100m or so. Just make sure they are ARC enabled :) Hope this helps
We are just going to start shooting our very first podcast but we only have canon 50M cameras. our Atem mini pro only allows 1080P. We also using a Rode Caster Pro. Question do you have any videos for more in-depth on live streaming aspect like pressing a button on Atem for lower 3rds etc.. I feel like a lot of video I show people just use the ATEM as a switcher but.... the use OBC on the PC as the main controller.
Hey Jiffer, I have quite a few videos on my channel around how to use the ATEM for live streaming, and one specifically around using Singular.Live for graphic generation. Did you have any specific questions or topics in mind you'd like me to cover in future videos? I'm always open to suggestion for video ideas 🙂 Thanks
Hi Alex, What a great video! I love watching you guys do this. This setup looks amazing. I always wanted something like this, but I think it will take me a while to get there. I really enjoyed watching it and learned a lot of things that will definitely help me create one of my own in the future. Thanks a lot for sharing such an amazing video. All of your videos are extremely amazing, and I look forward to watching more amazing content like this.
Thanks so much John. Great to hear that you found the video so useful and you learnt a couple of things along the way! Thanks for taking the time to leave this comment and let me know. Much appreciated!
Is there a reason why you didn't connect one of the 5 outputs of the Rødecaster Pro to the line/mic in of the ATEM to get the good processed audio straight into the video? I've tried that and it seems to work. As long as the audio coming into the ATEM Mini is high volume it is absolutely good enough. We have 3 studios where we use Wirecast and ATEM minis and all our audio get processed by different audio mixers and then send to Wirecast and ATEM (depending on use case)... we have done many hundred livestreams like that in the last 2 years.
Great video Alex! Any tips for a situation where you’re also recording the output of a computer monitor into the ATEM (in 1080) and want to replace it later with a 4K file that’s been recorded on the computer itself, while also using the same vision mixing technique? I wonder if it can work as smoothly as the braw method.
Hey Andri, good question! I have to be honest and say I usually manually record my comp screen in 4K using Quicktime, and just make sure in Quicktime the audio recording is set to my ATEM Mini. Then use the auto sync function in DaVinci to sync by audio, or do a sync clap and sync manually. Either way is super quick. Hope this helps :)
@@AlexPettitt thanks! Good solutions, though unless I’m mistaken they would involve chopping up the screen recording manutally to match the edits in the ISO Davinci file. I keep wondering if there won’t one day be way to replace the chopped up ISO edit with higher-res material (as with the RAW replacement workflow) as it would be really handy. Again, a great video, and a really good idea to show real world situations, thanks again.
I dunno about recording on the computer itself, but you could output the computer HDMI in 4K into a 4K hyperdeck. I have a mainly SDI workflow so I’m not sure if a 4K hyperdeck would pass the video through the HDMI output for input into the ATEM but I think they do. Also I don’t know if you’d need an UpDownCross before the ATEM or if it can downscale from 4K.
THAT was super useful thank you ! and congrats to the golf channel sucess! would you always recommend have a rode podcast audio setup besides the atem or is there a compact way of feeding the audio mix into the atem directly?

i have a sony zv e 10 and it records 4K. i know its entry level camera but i would wanna benift from the 4K aswell , now my question is in order to get true 4k do i need to connect ssds to my cameras and record of there and drag into divinchi ?
Great video, one question: does this also work with supersource? We use SS quite a lot in our liveshows and it would be a pain te manually recreate that in davinci.
Good question Bart! So the answer is sort of YES and No. Natively, no the ATEM doesn't record your SuperSource layouts to the DaVinci file, BUT the work around is to plug a HDMI cable from HDMI Output 2 on the ATEM, and route it into a space input. Then in the ATEM Software Control, set output to to be SuperSource. Then your SuperSource layout is recorded as one of your ISO files ;) Hope this helps! Alex
@@AlexPettitt Great, thanks! The only problem is that it records in 1080p which doesn't really work with the 4k (or 6k) braw footage from the cameras. I think I will have to recreate my supersource layout in davinci then.

Can you do this with Sony cameras? Record 4K and easily transfer it into the timeline like the black magic camera?
Great work, love RS! I wish we had a 4k option instead of only 6k Braw. Talking head content like this would be a perfect with 4k 422 Pro Res
I was having this exact conversation with someone the other day! It would be great if the 6K's allowed you to record 4K Pro Res (event just proxy or RT) while plugged into the ATEM Mini. Working with 6K BRAW all the time really does eat up storage space.
@@AlexPettitt Couldn't this same concept work if you used Atomos Ninja V for 4k pro res recording to replace the 1080p footage from the Atem?
1:41 what's up with the wobble? IBIS gone mad?
Love seeing these setup videos. Is there a reason not to plug the Rode Podcaster directly into the ATEMs audio input?
That's a great video. Can the same be done with other cameras or only blackmagic ones? I understand that the only difference that one would need to go and press a button on all cameras, rather than doing it from the software, since it supports that option only for blackmagic cameras. Am I correct? Thank you!
I think so. As long as you have all camera mics enabled in all your cameras, you should be able to sync in DVR all different sources via the sound/waveform. No matter which brand.
Hey brother, what lense are you using with the BMPCC4k and this particular podcast setup?
Thank you very much
Hi Alex we are a church in south Africa and would like to upgrade the quality our live streaming.
And do you think the Panasonic lumix 35-100 mft lenses will work well on these studio Cams ?
@@AlexPettitt hi Alex, I am back again after buying the black magic cameras, and using the atem mini SDI switcher and streaming using the obs, I still what to improve the quality of the live streaming on UA-cam and Facebook any advise sir ?

Does the addition of the 4k files need to be braw files from a BM camera to render properly or can I use Sony 4k recordings?
Just a short follow-up question:
If you'd need to bridge a large distances between the cameras and the ATEM/switcher using SDI cables due to a location's limitations, is it possible to use Blackmagic HDMI-to-SDI converters and still be able to control the cameras via the ATEM/switcher?
Thanks a lot for your help! :)
Good question, for this you MUST use a BlackMagic Bi-Directional converter on each end and run 2 SDI cables per camera (one for in and the other for out). Then it will work.
The other option (depending on length needed) is to look at optical HDMI cables. You can usually get these up to 100m or so. Just make sure they are ARC enabled :) Hope this helps
@@AlexPettitt Awesome, thanks a lot! :-)
Hi Alex,
What a great video!
Awesome.
@@michael_r thanks Michael!
@@AndriSoren ATEM Mini is downscaling from 4K resolutions of laptops... at least the website says so.
Which lenses are recommended for the Black Magic cameras?
So get a sponsored NAS, then don’t copy the files to it to save time but copy the files to upgrade to 6k? Have I got this right?
THAT was super useful thank you ! and congrats to the golf channel sucess! would you always recommend have a rode podcast audio setup besides the atem or is there a compact way of feeding the audio mix into the atem directly?
Does the swapping work also for ISO recording but different cameras? Like example. sony fx line?
Awesome & Thanks :)
Is it possible to record 4k videos on a memory card in a Sony camera and simultaneously record the iso recordings in SSD?
Let me know if you'd like to see more of this out and about style video on my channel in the future :)
Great info! Well explained, including reasons why to select certain settings. Thank you!
@@brianr.8888 Thanks Brian! Glad you found it useful and my explanations were clean. That's always a worry of mine... whether anyone will actually understand what I'm doing 😂. Good to know it makes sense!
YES PLEASE! I'm just building out all of my Podcast/Videocast stuff and this was extremely helpful! Especially now knowing that the gear I have can take me from my 75 subscribers to over 2M. 🤣
This is awesome content, love seeing other's setup and how it all comes together. Gives me ideas on how to tweak my own setup.
yes, please. these videos are amazing
What lenses were used on the blackmagics ?
Hi there, does an Atem extreme ISO save all camera angles on cameras that are not black magic ?
thank you
Wait... You can't record from the cameras straight into the NAS?
Would the 4K Raw file in davinci work with other file formats from different cameras that aren't blackmagic?
i have a sony zv e 10 and it records 4K. i know its entry level camera but i would wanna benift from the 4K aswell , now my question is in order to get true 4k do i need to connect ssds to my cameras and record of there and drag into divinchi ?
Great video, one question: does this also work with supersource? We use SS quite a lot in our liveshows and it would be a pain te manually recreate that in davinci.
Good question Bart! So the answer is sort of YES and No. Natively, no the ATEM doesn't record your SuperSource layouts to the DaVinci file, BUT the work around is to plug a HDMI cable from HDMI Output 2 on the ATEM, and route it into a space input. Then in the ATEM Software Control, set output to to be SuperSource. Then your SuperSource layout is recorded as one of your ISO files ;)
Hope this helps! Alex
@@AlexPettitt Great, thanks! The only problem is that it records in 1080p which doesn't really work with the 4k (or 6k) braw footage from the cameras. I think I will have to recreate my supersource layout in davinci then.
Are they using in camera LUTS or are they or you doing any coloring in post?
Mainly using in camera LUTS as the lighting is all very controlled in that space :)
