  • The Grizzly is always going to be one of my favorite ATVs, but why did Yamaha switch back to the 686? What happened to the 850? Oh well, still one of the best ATVs of all time... But the competition is getting stiffer...

    I have a 2016 kodiak 700 with the Subaru 708cc, and after the first oil change at 20hrs, it started smoking on cold start ups like many others have. So I took it in under warranty to get it fixed, and they ended up replacing the cylinder head with a new one thinking it was bad valve guides or seals, but the smoking was just as bad after I got it back. So I took it back telling them it was just as bad as before, and that it must be the rings, piston, or a cylinder issue, so they ended up doing a cylinder leak down test at TDC, mid way, and at the bottom stroke, and found it was way below specs from about the center to the bottom stroke. So they then replaced the piston, rings, and cylinder, which finally fixed the problem. The cylinder had just enough taper to cause the rings to not sweep the oil back down the cylinder, and allowed oil to get past the rings and into the combustion chamber when cold, but once the piston heated up and expanded after about a minute of run time, it was fine. So that's for sure the issue I was having with mine. Maybe this info will help others with the same problem.

    If Yamaha builds a 1000cc and 850cc twin grizzly they would be the #1 selling ATV.

    • @DirtObseXXion

      Nah, the biggens don't sell that well. The 500-570 class is top selling. The Grizzly is top selling in it's class of 650-750cc.. They'd have to build it from the ground up, current Grizz isn't big enough to support a twin..

    I am torn between the Grizzly 700 and the Suzuki King quad. Was going to grab this summer, but life got in the way again and will have to wait another year or two. Its been over a decade since owning an ATV and starting to really feel the itch to get out and explore again. Great video!

    • @DirtObseXXion

      Both good options... I'm partial to the grizzly over the king quad but Suzuki really improve the king quad in 2019... I'd say give the Sportsman 850 a good look too.. you can probably get it cheaper than both of those and I love my XP1000.. Some guys just don't like Polaris, but I think they are a great trail riding machine... I hope you're able to get something, any four wheelers better than no four wheeler! Thanks for the comment!

    Nice video! I have always loved the yamaha grizzly, but after so many years of them never upping the engine, I went ahead and jumped on the ban wagon and got a can am renegade xmr 1000r. I absolutely loved the on demand front locking diffirential system of the grizzly and was knowing that I would have to put a torque lok in the can am, and that is coming soon. I always thought it was hard to beat the power of the grizzly, boy was I wrong, it is no where in the ballpark of the Rotax engine in the renagade xmr. I now have 29.5 outlaw 2s and you really have to be careful when someone gets within 50 feet behind you even at 30 mph it will shoot a rooster tail! Grizzly might at well go 1000cc. I have a black 2019 Grizzly SE with the 686 and LOVE IT! Yeah it only has 45 miles on it so far but it is a beast. The 708 was in the Grizz and Wolverine. Once Yamaha went the 847 twin in the Wolverine the only thing the 708 would be in is the Grizzly. Yamaha just decided to stay in house with the 686 and use the same block for the Raptor and Grizzly. I think the 708 had early valve guide seal issues but otherwise was a good motor. The 686 is bulletproof and in house. The 708 wasnt a huge improvement over the 686 anyway.

    Yamaha bought Subaru small power sports hence the 708
    There is a shaft that has the oil pump and water pump on it .
    The nut that holds both of those loosens itself off and falls off the shaft.
    No fix or ownership from Yamaha
    I've owned a 2017 grizzly and it backfired alot and was a hard starter getting rid of the 708 was a good business move by Yamaha.

    IMO yamaha has the best selling, and most reliable utility atv for years with the grizzly, and they are holding place 1,2,3 in the paris-dakar rally for atv's in 2020 with the raptor 700.. People, the only place where Yamaha doesn't compete with Can Am and Polaris is in engine size. In every other category, they not only compete, but even BEAT them. 4wd system, quality, reliability, belt life, rear brakes, and resale value just to name a few. There's more to an atv than just cc's!
    I'd have a new Grizz ten times over any new Polaris!

    • @DirtObseXXion

      I've owned both, I prefer the Sportsman 1k to the Grizzly. I love the Grizzly but the Sportsman offers way more.. Better suspension, smoother ride, beefier hubs, a-arms, and drive arms, drive modes, better racks, ADC, and better plastics... I agree it isn't all about ccs but we're talking double HP... You're going to notice that... I like Grizzly, I like Yamaha... But CanAm and Polaris are next level in the premium ATV department... Everyone else just putts along maintaining status quo...

    • @utahwanderlust700
      @utahwanderlust700 5 років тому +1

      Dirt ObseXXion I'll give you that the ride is smoother on a Polaris. That's always been their clame to fame. But all that other stuff you mention won't mean much when it's sitting in the shop or being towed home. I know of several people with new Sportsmans that have already had two or three problems on brand new machines.
      And never in a million years would I list cheap plastic racks, or the ADC as a positive. That is a band aid solution to give a Hilliard clutch awd system something that a real, 4wd system has naturally. I can't believe Polaris is still clinging to that design. Even Can Am is shifting away from auto lock/auto unlock front ends. Maybe they are starting to realize that rider-controlled lockers give way more control. Polaris needs to follow suit, and improve overall reliability, and shed a couple hundred pounds before I'd ever buy one. For the time being, they are the absolute last brand I would buy.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому

      Fair enough, I'm not trying to convert anyone and I'm only speaking to the XP1000 model. I like the Polaris AWD system better because you don't have to stop to engage and you can still steer.. It took me awhile to adjust at first though... Yamaha's CVT is BY FAR the best, not arguing that at all.. The racks are steel reinforced and are actually usable.. I hated the racks on the Grizz... XP takes more abuse with the beefier hubs, bearings, and the Arched A-Arms are awesome.. My Grizzly went to the shop for warranty work twice, the Sportsman once. I do all my own maintenance and non warranty work. Like I said I've owned both.. The Sportsman is by far the superior machine in my opinion.. That's all it is, an opinion.. But it's based on 1000 miles of seat time on both.. I can certainly appreciate the fact you disagree. The Grizzly is a great machine and you'll definitely be happy with it.. Grizzly>570 Sportsman all day...

    • @utahwanderlust700

      Dirt ObseXXion You should have been able to steer fine in 4wd on the Grizz. It uses an open differential. Not to mention that what resistance is still felt should've easily been overtaken by the power steering. And you should've been able to switch into 4wd on the fly as well.
      Also, your 2016 was the first model year for the 708 engine. Yamaha did have some issues with that machine. Not to mention it was also a complete redesigned, first year model. I wouldn't even buy a first model year Honda, because I don't like being the guinea pig!
      In any event, enjoy your machine. I hope you have better luck with it than the average Polaris buyer. In the meanwhile, I'll put another 3000 miles on my Kawie this year, bringing it up to 20,000 miles. My Yamahas will probably only get 500 miles on them this year, but they've already got almost 2000 hours on them, so that's ok. They've earned a rest. Lol!

    The biggest problem with CF Moto and any other off-brand ATV is resale value. You save a thou or two up front, but then, 4 or 5 years later, it's easily worth 4 or 5 thou less. Any older than that? Essentially unsellable.

      I've heard that before but the only legal restriction I can find is on youth ATVs... There are carbon credits tho, maybe Yamaha doesn't think a big ATV is worth spending the credit on... Here's the thing... SXSs sell at a rate of 2 to 1 over atvs.. The best selling atvs are mid displacement 450-570, hence the new 450 Kodiak.. The Grizzly is the best selling big bore... So, yamaha's biggest competition would be themselves in a market that's comparatively small... not to mention buyers a big bore ATVs are actually concerned with size, and the closest thing Yamaha has ready to drop into an ATV would be the parallel-twin of the Wolverine at 847ccs.. so you'd still lose some sales to Can-Am and Polaris.. I hate to say this but when it comes down to it, it's just not worth their time..

      Bigger Grizz would be awesome but I wouldn't hold my breathe on one.. The price point would be a turnoff for a lot of people especially in the new age of SXSs.. An 850 Grizzly would HAVE to be priced much higher than the 850 Sportsman and Outlander, both of which have a price competitive with the current Grizz.. If you start talking 12-13k for an ATV, it becomes competitive with the 1000cc machines as well as SXSs.. I don't think Yamaha will take the risk on the development of a new ATV in a market that isn't huge.. The 500-700cc machines are the sweet spot for ATV sale... I'd still love to see one tho!

      @@DirtObseXXion Not the rumors I'm talking about. Last year and any year prior was more hoping that legit rumor. And I respectfully disagree as far as having to completely redesign something. And this is coming from someone who just bought a 2018 Polaris Sportsman 850 SP Camo. They just need to make it competitive. People love Yamaha and Honda for different reasons than Polaris. Honda doesn't give a F about what other ATV companies charge because people have always bought Honda's for their brand name and dependability. Similarly to Yamaha. Plus fans of those brands have been STARVING forever for them to get back in the big bore race. If they just made a new 850 Grizz or Rincon with the desired features and a noticeable redesign while making the price semi competitive they'd be just fine. And even though I really enjoy my Sportsman 850 which is my 4th Polaris in my 29 year life, I had a 2011 Grizz 700 EPS that I absolutely loved (it was stolen 4 years ago) and I never had one problem with it in the 4 years I did have with it. And I rode it pretty hard. While Polaris' are a lot of fun they don't have the build quality/dependability you typically find with a Honda/Yamaha hence the price. Just my 2 cents.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому +1

      All good points my friend, I loved my Grizz too.. Sorry to hear yours was stolen... But here's my rebuttal; the Grizzly is best selling ATV that's got a displacement higher than 570... Not all of the numbers are out yet, and sources vary, but from what I've read so far, the Sportsman 570 is the best selling ATV. All of the top selling ATVs are lower displacement (700 or less). So I don't think a big bore ATV is worth it to Yamaha or Honda in the same way that pure sport SXSs are. As for redesign, I only mean that Yamaha can't drop a parallel twin into the current Grizz, the chassis isn't big enough. Even if all the drive line components stay the same, they'd still have to re-think chassis, plastics, and definitely brakes at minimum.. The weight would definitely creep into the mid to upper 800lbs so they may have to look at drive-line components too.. Not that the current Grizz is bad, other than racks I think it is damn near perfect.. But they don't have the room to work like they did in the Wolverine...

      @@DirtObseXXion Fair points. We'll see if the Grizz remains the best selling once Honda updates their Rincon this year. I think that'll force their hand to some extent. I just heard that once the SxS markets for Honda/Yamaha caught up to Polaris in their offerings by and large, they would circle back around their attention to ATV's (or at least more than what they've been doing lately which is basically nothing). I'm very confident Honda will come out with their own new updated Rincon with diff lock, power steering, etc which will sell well considering every Honda fan out there has been starved for a over a decade in the big bore segment. And if I'm right and it sells well for Honda (it will if they do what I've heard) then Yamaha will take notice. I'm going to get another ATV to compliment my Sportsman. It'll be another Grizz when they update it/or Rincon when they update it.

    I have a 2017 grizzly 708 special edition it’s been into Yamaha twice to fix the oil burning but today it’s still burning oil almost as fast as the gas. I have to buy a oil change kit every 1000 kms. I called Yamaha head office and they will not make this right with me. I’ve been buying Yamaha atv’s and generators since 2003 loyal loyal customer and I’m now thinking about buying a side by side. I guess it’s time to sell my 2 660’s and my 708 and head back to Honda. Yamaha just has the worst customer service and won’t fix my bike I’ve been having trouble with since day 1!! Not to mention they sold me my 2017 grizzly knowing that the 708 was gonna be a ticking time bomb. That’s how you loose loyal buyers!! So buyers beware Yamaha ain’t the top dog no more not after screwing thousands of people from 2016 to 2018!!! 🖕🏻Yamaha

    No need for a 850 twin.
    700 single is plenty of power.

      They'll be bullet proof though... Come apocalypse time it'll be Honda's and Yamaha's... But until the world ends, I'll stick with the fun stuff...

      North Country Boyz I think they could be a competitor if they wanted. I have a yamaha v max sitting outside, and believe me they dominate in the cruiser bikes, now if they would drop that technology into the 4 wheelers they would have something! Lol but right now you are correct they are no where even close in the power, and the fox suspension on the can ams are awesome! 😆👍👌👊 glad you finally got your new engine in!

      @@markminyard4874 Awesome!!!! V-Max is a beast.. I had a vstar 1100 and that thing was a torque monster... I ride a Kawi Vaquero and a GSXR1000 now..

      Dirt ObseXXion yes they are nice. Yamaha is the ones who designed v boost on when the v max was introduced. It is 4 cylinder with 1 carburetor feeding each cylinder, then at 5500 rpm a butterfly valve in the intake opens and that lets 2 carburetors feed each cylinder. You feel it when that happens! Now other manufacturers used their design and put 8 injectors on a 4 cylinder engine, they run from idle to a set rpm on 4 injectors then the other 4 come into play. A real game changer,and yamaha is the first! 👍 👌 👊

      I made a typo...Well, I don't know if it was me or Jameson that made the typo...either way you caught what I twas sayin. 😂 It is true...if there is ever a zombi apocolypse...it will be the Honda or Yamaha we are mounting the M134D on! Now I am going to dream tonight about Zombi killing. Thanks! 😎
