  • I'm doing some delicate scything around an electric poultry net fencing, with a 50cm light bush blade. The stems of the thistles were getting to be 1/2 inch+ in diameter, so I preferred to use the heftier bush blade. The thistles and reed canary grass were getting so high, was starting to not be able to see my chickens! The tall vegetation actually helped keep my chickens cool during the heatwave last week, but now the thistles are about to bloom, so it's high time to mow them. These Fux scythes are available at onescytherevol...

I think the chickens appreciate the work.

I also use poltry net for my birds. And have scythed to close a few times and cut the net. I usually cut a swath inside the perimeter and then move the whole net into the cut section, then cut the outside section and move the net back. I respect your skill to not cut any of the netting.

If I am understanding the technique correctly, he is doing it in three stages. First he is creating a comfortable working area relatively far from the fence, then cutting away the majority of the grass near the fence line for visibility, and then doing a final close cut to the fence for a clean finish. Did I read that right?

You make it look so easy! What is the rake you used?
