Agreed! So often rolling shutter is just in a studio but these tests really let you see if it'll actually affect your shot. The a6400 has HORRIBLE rolling shutter with no ibis so even sitting handheld is AWFUL lol.
I do have also A6300 and just try to convince myself buy FX30. I'm videographer but buying over 2000 euro camera without real photo features stressing me out 😬

Can someone confirm , if the camera was placed in a gimbal & taking a running shot of the subject does it still create the rolling shutter issue? I understand that only rigorous handheld movements will cause it but just wanted to know if this can happen in gimbal as well?
Is the FX30's electronic shutter enough for travel photos? I really need a hybrid camera for my travels that can also shoot 10-bit video. The a7iv is out of my budget for a B cam to my BMPCC 6K Pro. Idk why Sony haven't released a refresh of the a6XXX line of cameras yet.
It takes one frame single shot stills. Enough to get you out of trouble. I do not recommend it for photos unless you have to. Many other great cameras for photos for much cheaper

@@DDVlogAR the a7c rolling shutter is better only slightly in aps-c mode. You just have to weigh up if you want that, you won’t be getting the oversampling

@@victorlolo2008 it’s really annoying because ironically if you want to have a smooth timeline while editing you have to shoot h265, there are NO hardware accelerators for h264 4k 10bit but there are for many flavours of h265. So even though it’s more compressed it will scrub better (saying you have a modern computer)
0:11 Is good to test all the PROS and CONS of a camera but nobody rolls/pan a camera that fast, not even Hollywood using the Alexa cause they know it will not look good.
If you have a car shoot or are shooting while driving it becomes very apparent. Rolling shutter is a problem.. regardless what u say it's best to find a camera that has minimal RS.
unpopular opinion: I much prefer the green tint of the fx30 and I think that kind of matters when I want a quick turnaround and not mess with the red channel or color wheels each time.
A7iv 4k looks sharper than both fx30 and fx6. Fx30 has noise in shadows in every shot, even when good lit. 1080p a7iv still sharper to me maybe due to different focus, fx6 has a more crushed shadows than others. Thanks for the video it was interesting
Xh2s ia probably the best performing and feature rich APS-C for video at the moment. It has the best selection of formats and bitrates recorded in camera and the highest dynamic range. The Sony cameras will benefit from better selection of lenses and superior autofocus. Also access to gyro stabilisation if that is your thing. A7IV is a great "crop sensor" video camera with an option of shooting full frame but it's missing the 4k100-120 in comparison to FX30 and the XH2S.

Im a full time photographer moving into video more. What frame rates were the boxing scenes filmed at? and did you export this in 24p? 30p? just trying to figure out because whenever I film something in higher frames then put it in a 24 frame timeline in FCPX it always looks super choppy because it's obviously dropping frames. I just am not sure how to do it. Or did you film the boxing scenes and interview all in 60p and use 60p timeline so it would look clean together?

Then IF you filmed at 30 or 60 it would have been with the intention of slowing it down 30p @ 80% 60p @ 40%...typically? obviously artistic freedom but I think you get my points? Im doing business walkthroughs and I filmed the first one on my a7/3 at 24 (US) and with the gimbal movements it just looked a bit juttery. So I was planning on using a higher frame rate for the next one I am doing. Obviously you can't see the project but I think that would smooth it up a bit. Hey Jason, what lenses would you recommend for this FX30 I just preordered it and don’t know which lenses to get (Lumix Shooter here) I was thinking on the Sigma 16mm f1.4 to start until I know which lenses to get for this new system, I’d like value lenses, great video btw 👌🏻. FYI: I have the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 I use it adapted on my Lumix Bodies, would you say it’s worth getting the Sigma MC11 adapter to use this lens ? Or just get Native lenses
I've used the Sigma MC-11 with the Sigma 18-35 on the a6600 before and it was decent but heavy. AF motors are also very loud, so unless you're running wireless lavs or have a sound guy with you, I think native is the way to go. A 16-55 or Tamron 17-70 would be better. I think the Tamron 17-70 is killer. It weighs less, is a f/2.8 constant, and has OIS. The Tamron 11-20 + 17-70 would cover 16-105mm equivalent which is quite decent imo. Throw in a Sigma 56mm prime for B-roll too.

On my a6300 I have the sigma 16mm f1.4 and the 30mm f1.4. I find myself reaching for the 30mm more. The 16mm is great if you want that wide angle but the 30mm is better for that blurry background. It really depends what you’re shooting/how much room you have to back up and what not. The 16mm is still great too!
I am torn between the fx3 and fx30. I like the fact that I could use smaller lenses and that the body weights a bit less.. and i could take photos with 26mp…. But then again the image quality of the fx3 looks better to me 😮

Hey Jason! I just received my FX 30 today and I’m really excited to shoot with it! I typically shoot sports like lacrosse and football with an A7iii and was wondering, should I return the FX 30 and save up for an FX 3 and keep using the A7iii? Any input would be appreciated thank you. I’m nervous about the rolling shutter.
Not quite. The FX30 is still set higher resolution in video. The A7IV would crop in on the 33MP sensor to only give effective 12MP in super35 mode. Rolling shutter is better on the A7IV because of it
I went from from Sony 6500 and 6300 to a Blackmagic MBPCC 4K three years ago. The FX30 has a great feature set and is super easy in some situations due to the great autofocus and stabilisation etc, but seriously, the image is just nowhere near as good as blackmagic. The only benefits image-wise are better rolling shutter and HFR (but 120fps is overkill 95% of the time) . If I got one of these, it would only be for occasional use, I just would never be happy with the image.

I don't see why sony could not implement 4k120p on A7IV in aps-c mode adding a 1,6x crop like on fx30. In aps-c mode A7IV it the same quality as FX30 and rolling shutter is the same, only additional crop for 4k120p is not available. Hate these A7/FX artificial firmware diffrrences. SONY! You were supposed to destroy them! not join them!

It is impossible to do what you suggested. To go from a 33 megapixel full frame sensor to a 1.5x crop sensor reduces your sensor space to only 15 megapixels. Compare that to the FX-30 which has 26 megapixels. There is simply so much more room to crop on the FX-30 compared to the crop mode of the a74. If you do a 1.6 times crop on 15 megapixels you have only 6.3 megapixels to work with. 4K requires 8.2 megapixels. Not only is 6.3 not enough you also have to crop more into the 6.3 to get to the 16x9 aspect ratio. On the FX-30 after you crop in 1.6 x you have 10.2 megapixels to work with. After cropping more to get to the 16x9 aspect ratio you still have plenty of room for the 8.2 megapixels required for 4K. Keep in mind you can't just multiply the crop factor times the sensor size to get the megapixels of any crop. You must square the crop factor because you're dealing with an area. Crop factors only deal with one dimension whereas any area requires two dimensions. This is why going from an f/stop of 2.0 requires an f/stop of 2.8 to double the area. An area of a circle equals pi * R squared. Two squared is 4. 2.8 squared is about 8. To do what you want to do would require a full frame sensor of about 60 megapixels which is what the Sony A7R4 has. That camera probably can't even do 4K60 because the processor is older and the readout speed is slower than the more recent sensors. However, the new A7R5 might be able to have 4K 120 since it is rumored to have 8K - which is the same amount of information being processed. Also, there doesn't appear to be any reason why Sony can't come out with a worthy APS-C rival to the Canon R7 because they now have an APS-C sensor that can do 4K 120 - something that the R7 cannot do. It's kind of interesting that Sony has done little to their APS-C line whilst Fuji has taken off - in large part due to their 26 mp BSI Sony (likely) sensor.
For wildlife videography, x2.05 crop is a positive. Also could you make a 1080p@240fps comparison between the FX3/a7SIII/FX6 vs FX30? Not sure but seen some footage and seems the FX30 has a better resolution there.
What's funny is that if the a7IV had a stacked sensor then it would have been too good for the money. They'll probably do that for the A9 III. Why they didn't put a fully articulating screen on the A1 is beyond me So I'm still on the A7III and will be purchasing a camera after Christmas. The FX30 not being stacked initially confused me but to hit that price point I guess it was a corner they had to cut. It's a shame but oh well.
Great great great practical assessment/review. The 15ms sensor readout is actually pretty good for the majority of modern cameras - and the boxing scenes showed no artifacts that bothered my eye... I have the FX-30 on pre-order - perfect for what I am looking for in terms of a very portable package that works for a one-man run 'n gun shooting setup - but still delivering an image quality that 'punches' above its' weight (pun intended!). Surprised at most comments saying the image looks great and there's nothing that bothers their eye. After seeing this test I'm definitely getting FX3; the rolling shutter with the fx30 looks awful. Just an unfortunate technical limit to this sensor size I think.

For anyone with A7IV - 1080p 120p looks a LOT better in full frame mode than in aps-c mode. I remember watching someone talking about it the other way around but I've tested it myself.
I preordered 2. I’m a hybrid shooter and I love the A74 but I’m tired of going from photo mode to rigged out video mode. Pretty stoked. I figured the rolling shutter was going to be better. Anything’s better than the A74. Thanks for the proof. 🙌🏼
The reason the fx3 is approved ( and might the fx30) is the time code input and the new software, that’s why the A7siii or the A7iv probably won’t get approved. I own the A7iv and I am happy about It, but I am aware is a hybrid camera Not a full on cinema one. Even though we could argue that the image quality is stellar

@@definingslawek4731 Shutter angle is not primarily for changing, but for staying when you switch frame rates so that your shutter speed would also change accordingly.
before launch, i expected 11ms or so, as a maximum, but thinking they might pull it under 9-8 and they probably will. 15ms+ is surprisingly high. i didnt expect it to be worse than a7iv's 13ms in apsc. and especially when you consider that they'll probably stick to this sensor for ages, like they did with a6000 series, i think they should have done a better job. maybe if they kept the sensor at 24, or even 20 (on paper), but to think this will be the rolling for years from now on on new apsc sony releases is not quite ok. it's good, but they should have done better, considering how long they let people deal with their previous apsc camera's rolling.. and it will maybe be the last apsc sensor that they produce for their own cameras, since full frame is taking over and smartphones will get much better in 5 years by the time they'll maybe be willing to put out a new sensor..
The point of this video is to show it doesn’t matter. And if you need high rolling shutter performance choose the right tool. This camera is crazy cheap for what you get. Can’t expect a RED for super budget prices
Well you’ve completely convinced me against the FX 30… The rolling shutter is a dealbreaker… So I just have to save up some more and get a better camera.
Great test, thanks! FX6 looks much better, less noise, better colors, sharper, easy to notice, and in post processing it will be even more visible. If FX6 is 100% Quality, then A7IV is 80% and FX30 is 65%.

If you’re okay with single shot photos and potential banding with lights the fx30 will do ok photos

I think i fixed the rolling shutter. I Use on 4k, the clear Image zoom. and the objects, on the Image are les bending.

The a7iv rolling shutter in crop is better due to a lower MP count and processing in super35 crop mode

They were filmed at 25fps. Make sure your timeline settings are at 24fps always. Then drop your 30 or 60fps footage into it and adjust from there

I've used the Sigma MC-11 with the Sigma 18-35 on the a6600 before and it was decent but heavy. AF motors are also very loud, so unless you're running wireless lavs or have a sound guy with you, I think native is the way to go. A 16-55 or Tamron 17-70 would be better. I think the Tamron 17-70 is killer. It weighs less, is a f/2.8 constant, and has OIS. The Tamron 11-20 + 17-70 would cover 16-105mm equivalent which is quite decent imo. Throw in a Sigma 56mm prime for B-roll too.

On my a6300 I have the sigma 16mm f1.4 and the 30mm f1.4. I find myself reaching for the 30mm more. The 16mm is great if you want that wide angle but the 30mm is better for that blurry background. It really depends what you’re shooting/how much room you have to back up and what not. The 16mm is still great too!

I am torn between the fx3 and fx30. I like the fact that I could use smaller lenses and that the body weights a bit less.. and i could take photos with 26mp…. But then again the image quality of the fx3 looks better to me 😮
FX3 overall is a better video camera. You will have to try choose the right tool for what you are wanting to do

Hey Jason! I just received my FX 30 today and I’m really excited to shoot with it! I typically shoot sports like lacrosse and football with an A7iii and was wondering, should I return the FX 30 and save up for an FX 3 and keep using the A7iii? Any input would be appreciated thank you. I’m nervous about the rolling shutter.
fx3 is much different to the fx30. just have to remember the lenses will change and the fx30 gives you more reach being an aps-c sensor

Not quite. The FX30 is still set higher resolution in video. The A7IV would crop in on the 33MP sensor to only give effective 12MP in super35 mode. Rolling shutter is better on the A7IV because of it
I went from from Sony 6500 and 6300 to a Blackmagic MBPCC 4K three years ago. The FX30 has a great feature set and is super easy in some situations due to the great autofocus and stabilisation etc, but seriously, the image is just nowhere near as good as blackmagic. The only benefits image-wise are better rolling shutter and HFR (but 120fps is overkill 95% of the time) . If I got one of these, it would only be for occasional use, I just would never be happy with the image.

I don't see why sony could not implement 4k120p on A7IV in aps-c mode adding a 1,6x crop like on fx30. In aps-c mode A7IV it the same quality as FX30 and rolling shutter is the same, only additional crop for 4k120p is not available. Hate these A7/FX artificial firmware diffrrences. SONY! You were supposed to destroy them! not join them!
Large megapixel sensor= too much heat in 4k120. A7siii can do iit because it's 12mp sensor
It's just my thought not a fact but I think this fast read out sensors are a little more solid as the overheating in the sensor can make pixels dead.
Mostly due to business reasons rather than technical.

It is impossible to do what you suggested. To go from a 33 megapixel full frame sensor to a 1.5x crop sensor reduces your sensor space to only 15 megapixels. Compare that to the FX-30 which has 26 megapixels. There is simply so much more room to crop on the FX-30 compared to the crop mode of the a74. If you do a 1.6 times crop on 15 megapixels you have only 6.3 megapixels to work with. 4K requires 8.2 megapixels. Not only is 6.3 not enough you also have to crop more into the 6.3 to get to the 16x9 aspect ratio. On the FX-30 after you crop in 1.6 x you have 10.2 megapixels to work with. After cropping more to get to the 16x9 aspect ratio you still have plenty of room for the 8.2 megapixels required for 4K. Keep in mind you can't just multiply the crop factor times the sensor size to get the megapixels of any crop. You must square the crop factor because you're dealing with an area. Crop factors only deal with one dimension whereas any area requires two dimensions. This is why going from an f/stop of 2.0 requires an f/stop of 2.8 to double the area. An area of a circle equals pi * R squared. Two squared is 4. 2.8 squared is about 8. To do what you want to do would require a full frame sensor of about 60 megapixels which is what the Sony A7R4 has. That camera probably can't even do 4K60 because the processor is older and the readout speed is slower than the more recent sensors. However, the new A7R5 might be able to have 4K 120 since it is rumored to have 8K - which is the same amount of information being processed. Also, there doesn't appear to be any reason why Sony can't come out with a worthy APS-C rival to the Canon R7 because they now have an APS-C sensor that can do 4K 120 - something that the R7 cannot do. It's kind of interesting that Sony has done little to their APS-C line whilst Fuji has taken off - in large part due to their 26 mp BSI Sony (likely) sensor.

What was the point of making this "cine" camera 26mp when others are 12mp? Rolling shutter, dual crop, heating will all be the side effects.
What's funny is that if the a7IV had a stacked sensor then it would have been too good for the money.
They'll probably do that for the A9 III.
Why they didn't put a fully articulating screen on the A1 is beyond me
So I'm still on the A7III and will be purchasing a camera after Christmas.
The FX30 not being stacked initially confused me but to hit that price point I guess it was a corner they had to cut. It's a shame but oh well.

Great great great practical assessment/review. The 15ms sensor readout is actually pretty good for the majority of modern cameras - and the boxing scenes showed no artifacts that bothered my eye... I have the FX-30 on pre-order - perfect for what I am looking for in terms of a very portable package that works for a one-man run 'n gun shooting setup - but still delivering an image quality that 'punches' above its' weight (pun intended!). Thanks again!
Surprised at most comments saying the image looks great and there's nothing that bothers their eye. After seeing this test I'm definitely getting FX3; the rolling shutter with the fx30 looks awful. Just an unfortunate technical limit to this sensor size I think.

For anyone with A7IV - 1080p 120p looks a LOT better in full frame mode than in aps-c mode. I remember watching someone talking about it the other way around but I've tested it myself.
With s and q mode you can also do 10bit 120fps

The reason the fx3 is approved ( and might the fx30) is the time code input and the new software, that’s why the A7siii or the A7iv probably won’t get approved.

before launch, i expected 11ms or so, as a maximum, but thinking they might pull it under 9-8 and they probably will. 15ms+ is surprisingly high. i didnt expect it to be worse than a7iv's 13ms in apsc. and especially when you consider that they'll probably stick to this sensor for ages, like they did with a6000 series, i think they should have done a better job. maybe if they kept the sensor at 24, or even 20 (on paper), but to think this will be the rolling for years from now on on new apsc sony releases is not quite ok. it's good, but they should have done better, considering how long they let people deal with their previous apsc camera's rolling.. and it will maybe be the last apsc sensor that they produce for their own cameras, since full frame is taking over and smartphones will get much better in 5 years by the time they'll maybe be willing to put out a new sensor..
The point of this video is to show it doesn’t matter. And if you need high rolling shutter performance choose the right tool. This camera is crazy cheap for what you get. Can’t expect a RED for super budget prices

It's a smaller company, but you should look into z-cam Cinema cameras. They have global shutter cinema cameras for around $6-7k

Great test, thanks! FX6 looks much better, less noise, better colors, sharper, easy to notice, and in post processing it will be even more visible. If FX6 is 100% Quality, then A7IV is 80% and FX30 is 65%.
