Interesting! I know the Sega Master System and Sega Genesis are still sold and quite popular in Brazil. But it seemed bizzare in Russia considering how modern game consoles are readily available. Nintendo actually left Brazil for a few years.

Surprised there aren't more Mario bootlegs on the Genesis, considering there's a big market for them. Also, the sped-up music (And if you thought the game was too fast) was most likely due to the fact the game was intended to be played on a PAL system at 50hz, which is why everything is sped-up in NTSC at 60hz.
Glad to see that other people recognize just how amazing this soundtrack is! I was already into Keygen Chiptune, but hearing the OST of "Super Mario 4: A Space Odyssey", as well as this game, got me into a few artists and songs I didn't know before! And if you thought the songs sounded great in the game, you should take your time to listen to the originals too, which are often much better when it comes to their instrumentation The OSTs have been uploaded to youtube for anyone who's interested, and most have the names of the original tracks in the comment as well!
If I want a really good story in a 2d Mario game I will go play super paper Mario. I don't like normal rpg turn based combat so super paper Mario is the game for me.
I just played Super Paper Mario, a game which contains a well-established Heaven and Hell, and a game that very commonly uses "game over" as a euphemism for death, or even murder, when spoken by a villain. I get the feeling most of these Russian bootleg devs took heavy inspiration from that when making their fail-screens.
