A Critical Look At The MOST BIZZARE Mario Game Ever Made- Mario 3: Around The World

- Nintendo has yet to release a new 2D Mario game in almost a decade. The latest entry New Super Mario Bros. U is going to be a decade old this year. It's a Wii U game, not a Nintendo Switch game. While Super Mario Maker 2 does serve as a new 2D Mario adventure for most, it is not quite the same as a traditional entry. I have wanted a new Mario platformer for quite some time, and I oddly found a Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) game that is a brand new original Mario game made from the ground up. It is a fairly recent game too. But is it any good?

The reason why “Mario 3: Вокруг света” was released on the genesis in 2011 is because in Russia, they have Sega Genesis that still around, even to this day. According to Sega Retro, it says "Since the end of 2010s, there has been a sharp increase in interest in Sega clones in Russia. In 2019, Sega and Dendy clones had 18% shares in sales of consoles in Russia. The main reason for this may have been the growing interest in retro consoles released by Nintendo, Sega and Sony in the world".
Interesting! I know the Sega Master System and Sega Genesis are still sold and quite popular in Brazil. But it seemed bizzare in Russia considering how modern game consoles are readily available. Nintendo actually left Brazil for a few years.

@@Demeech a lot of Russians can't afford modern consoles (ESPECIALLY if we're talking about buying games, the prices here STING), so getting a bootleg console for a child isn't out of the ordinary. Sega Mega Drive and Dendy (or famiclones in general) are fondly remembered which also influences their popularity. Bootleg consoles are so widespread that you could find one right in the center of Moscow (no joke)
@@BlueMarioGangsta Nintendo were never all that present in CIS countries. There was a partnership with Steepler in the 90's to sell Super Nintendo but other than that I don't think they really bothered officially distributing their consoles in this region until Wii happened. Despite some later localization efforts, though, the situation is pretty bad, especially in smaller countries like Belarus, yes

This means third parties like LATAMEL has to brought them here and increaise the original price retail due to import costs.
For example, the Nintendo Switch launch price was $300 in USA.
What was its launch price in Latin America? From $500 to $700 .____.
I remember this game because Vinesauce streamer Vargskeletor played this in a bootleg compilation a few years ago. This game’s and the Felix the Cat’s game over screens will stay in my mind forever.

It's sad when the "best" mega drive Mario bootleg is one that's a bootleg of another bootleg and gives up on the Mario aesthetic from level 3 onwards.

I find it interesting that the game uses sprites from mario & wario and the GCN version of yoshi's cookie, given how both are obscure japan-only spin-off games

I always knew of the sequel to this game which was Mario 4: A Space Odyssey. It was essentially the same thing, but with different level theming, a different story and an arguably even more horrifying game over screen.

Looks like an old GameMaker fan game from 2004. Many sprites from pre-existing titles, wonky controls and less than stellar programming. It’s kind of nostalgic actually!

That was incredible! Finally somebody is talking about this game. It just so happens that I am also working on a remake of this game in SMM2. And after I am done with that, I intend of remaking this game’s sequel, Mario 4: Space Odyssey. It would be awesome if you could talk about Mario 4: Space Odyssey on the channel.

An odd game for sure, but been looking at pirate games for far too long for this one to seem weird. As for what the market is, the Mega Drive is still available new in Brazil and new titles are still being made.

I don't know, man. In the '90s my family was too poor to buy a Mega Drive. BUT WE BOUGHT A SEGA MEGA CD ANYWAY! THEN WHAT'S THE POINT OF BUYING AN ADD-ON THAT WON'T WORK?
Sorry, I've had this in my head since 1997. That's when we started having financial problems. We bought the whole Mega CD library, the family still doesn't know it's an add-on, and I... And I still want to buy a Mega Drive on eBay, I've only found Genesis.

What they were thinking when designing the game over screen
They wanted to scare players to get good at the games
Surprised there aren't more Mario bootlegs on the Genesis, considering there's a big market for them.
Also, the sped-up music (And if you thought the game was too fast) was most likely due to the fact the game was intended to be played on a PAL system at 50hz, which is why everything is sped-up in NTSC at 60hz.

I just played Super Paper Mario, a game which contains a well-established Heaven and Hell, and a game that very commonly uses "game over" as a euphemism for death, or even murder, when spoken by a villain.
I get the feeling most of these Russian bootleg devs took heavy inspiration from that when making their fail-screens.
They didn't take inspiration. They just stole someone's weirdly dark fanart

Glad to see that other people recognize just how amazing this soundtrack is! I was already into Keygen Chiptune, but hearing the OST of "Super Mario 4: A Space Odyssey", as well as this game, got me into a few artists and songs I didn't know before!
And if you thought the songs sounded great in the game, you should take your time to listen to the originals too, which are often much better when it comes to their instrumentation
The OSTs have been uploaded to youtube for anyone who's interested, and most have the names of the original tracks in the comment as well!
