New York Spearfishing: reflections and challenges.

Spearfishing in New York, is my form of meditation, learning how to not be reactive.
Learn to be in the moment, aware of my surroundings, leave worries out.
Not fear the current that takes me out, mindful of the crashing waves.
The past 12 months have been a time of reflection and recollection.
I realized growing up I faced more violence, emotional abuse, losses.
Even at 13, after the sudden death of my mother, my father did not stop his uncontrollable anger, violence, tyrannical disciplining.
It was living like a minefield. Some privilege here and there, but I would never knew when the next detonation was.
But my father also helped me love the ocean. He bought me a speargun when I was 14 and even a flashlight. When I was 14 or 15 I went spearfishing at night in a small cove in Sardinia.
I was worried about what would be in the dark beyond the beam of the flashlight.
He allowed me unusual freedom in the ocean.
The luxury of being an adult is when you can do what you wanted as a child and take it to the next level. And leave the old hurt behind.
I went back in the water after 2 weeks non stop covering the Long Island serial killer.
The conditions were rough, with strong wind from the south stirring sediment. But the water this year stayed cool, preventing the summertime algae bloom that turn the water brown.
I saw the birds feeding like crazy. Below there were schools of bluefish in a feeding frenzy. on the clouds of small baitfish allover.
I already had a striped bass, but I much prefer the bluefish. Healthier to eat, easier to clean, more sustainable and a much more challenging shot.
My gear is mostly made in Italy. 70cm Salvimar pneumatic speargun. Thin, short shaft. I put the smallest speartip on it. It goes completely through the fish. So the catch is secured on the monofilament line. GoPro is attached to the tip, so I can get close up shots of what I just want to record visually. I am selective. I do not want to get more than 3 fish, what I am willing to clean and eat. music by @mbv
